On October 1, 1979, when Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was sworn-in as president, Goodluck Jonathan was just a 22 year-old undergrad of University of Port-Harcourt. Shagari was 54 years old. Ayo Fayose was 19 years old. Bukola Saraki was 17. Yemi Osinbajo was 22. The generation of the likes of Shagari, Richard Akinjide, Adisa Akinloye, Sabo Barkin Zuwo, Sam Mbakwe, Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, Ume Ezeoke, Christian Onoh, Akin Omoboriowo, Olusola Saraki, Sunday Awoniyi, Garba Nadama, Awal Ibrahim and so on has gone for good!
Some of us in our 40s, 50s and 60s now, were in school then, either in the university or secondary school. We had lofty dreams, both personal and societal. We were always motivated by nationalists and inventors who had impacted positively on the cause of humanity. We were voracious readers of novels and other books. Nelkon for our Ordinary Level Physics, Lambert for Chemistry, B.O ADELEKE and Goh Cheng Leong for our Geography, Phebean Ogundipe for Practical English, William Shakespeare Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, OLa Rotimi and Wole Soyinka for Literature and others like that.
We were always flaunting our knowledge of current affairs. Inter-school quiz, Literary and Debating competition were the in-thing. Nowadays, students can hardly string a sentence together in English without errors.
Fast forward 35 years on and you are shocked and disturbed. Have you ever spoken to or engaged a 20 year-old boy? Ask him what motivates him and he is likely to mention music, hip hop to be precise. He has hundreds of downloaded songs on his phone. He can sing all of them off hand. He knows all the singles of Nice, Neato C, Timaya, Davido, Whiz Kid off hand. The babes among them take pride in enticing men old enough to be their father on social media with buxomly physique. But he/she does not know anything about history of nationalism in the country. Ideas about good society, responsible family and good conduct do not motivate him. He just wants to make money because his friend who does yahoo is rich and rides a good car, her friend who has numerous ‘aristos’ drives an SUV!
The things that interest him/her are things that do not add value. He /she has google but never uses it for advancement of knowledge but to download porn and other inanities. Yet, in TWENTY years time, they are the ones that will be contesting to become governors, senators, Reps members and even president.
They belong to a generation that does not care about morality. They belong to a generation that is motivated only by money and its acquisition. By 2035 to 2040, they will be our senators, Reps, governors and so on.
I wonder if we have ever spared a thought for how this country will look like under them. I told a man recently and these are my words: IF A GUY WHO IS IN LAGOS COULD USE FALSE PRETENCE TO OBTAIN $20,000 FROM SOMEONE IN UNITED STATES, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN IF SUCH A GUY BECOMES A STATE GOVERNOR AND IS IN CHARGE OF AN ALLOCATION HE DOES NOT EVEN HAVE TO OBTAIN UNDER FALSE PRETENCE? WHICH HIS STATE IS STATUTORILY ENTITLED TO. How did we get into this mess? How can we get out of this predicament? I am worried, deeply worried. Are you?

Nothing new has been said here. Unalloyed facts still remain that..
1. Gowon was not recognized in the East and therefore didn't have the instruments and influence to release of Awo who was detained in the East.
2. The source of your narrative was from Guardian a tabloid of the British who strongly supported the puppet Nigerian state with arms, ammunitions, military training in the war of attrition against the East. So those views cannot be seen as unbiased. This is common knowlege.
The atrocities of the British government in the pre-indepedent and during the war in Nigeria have been grossly downplayed. Not just with their penchant for diplomatic sleaziness and military support for atrocities but with their media with which they had a monopoly to hold people spellbound with their propaganda depending own which side of the divide their interests lie. They did it in Botswana, India, Nigeria.
Go read this book, it's an expose on British atrocities in Eastern Nigeria, written by a British journalist himself.

What and what would they be doing for the bogus salaries that make people leave top professional jobs to become aids? Yet only 35 were sacked or redeployed. Then what will be left for health, education, infrastructure and even basic welfare rights. The nation is doomed beyond repair.

Some guys were discussing about the civil war and most of them said the Yorubas through Awolowo hated them and supported the government against them. I aksed them to tell me Zik's role during the war and they kept quiet until an old man among them said he betrayed Biafra.
I have also seen most comments from some fellas here calling Awolowo as a betrayer but never called out zik, their main man at that time for doing same. The truth is, you can't cover your family member and insult someone else who did same thing they did.
I know unlearned and bitter souls will quote me with insults and I am waiting for them.

Ojukwu was foolish! Ok l agree with you. Today who is foolish between Ojukwu and all the "One Nigeria" wise men who fought against him - beginning from the prayer warrior Gowon. Ojukwu is having the last laugh on Nigeria.
Gowon used the services of all surviving first republic Politicians to his advantage. He gave them seats at his Council and they served as Advisors and Strategists to him.
Awolowo, and the rest of them.
Ojukwu on the other hand, either placed first republic politicians from East on House Arrests, or simply ignored him.
Even Danjuma was thrilled to the Press when he recaptured the home of Aja Nwachuku and wondered WHY Ojukwu would place a former Ambassador to UN on house arrest.
Zik and the rest of them who could influence world powers and provide advise were also ignored.
In the end, it was Awo strategy of using the SS and banning food import that helped Nigeria win the war.

Why would Ojukwu declare Biafra? Was Biafra in the mind of Ojukwu and Ndi-Igbo at that material time? Do you actually understand the circumstances that led to North of Biafra?

Please how does a military coup have control over a region if the legitimacy of the coup is challenged and the leadership not recognized? Military coup is a illegal venture. It succeeds if It is able to overcome every opposition and suppress any challenge. If it fails, the existence of such government is endangered. Northern counter-coup did not succeed in the Eastern Region because Ojukwu refused to recognize Gowon and insisted on Ogundipe given the "disappearance" of Ironsi. It succeeded in the West. It only succeeded in the Eastern Region after the "fall" of Biafra in 1970.

How would anyone say Gowon did not superintend over Nigeria after the counter coup of July 29, 1966.
Ironsi came to power as a result of the first coup that killed other regions leaders in January 1966 which was far more bloody and yet he still ruled as the Nigeria head of state over all regions.
How then will any sane thinking person say Gowon that came in as a result of a counter coup do not have power over the Eastern region Government just 5 days after the coup!

LegendHero: I was involved in an argument with a guy tonight on Nairaland and he was so brainwashed that he believed Ojukwu released Chief Awolowo from prison. Even when I tried showing him the actual prints of the August 5, 1966 edition of the New York Times Newspaper, he still doubted the truth in that assertion.
Most of these guys have been brainwashed by their fore-bearers that Awo betrayed them and their elders made sure they plant the seed of hatred in their children born and unborn by telling them Ojukwu released Awolowo from prison. Many of the folks on the other side still believed this and I think it is now time to kill that false narratives that have been peddled for over 5 decades. I hope this truth resonates forever among the Awo antagonists born and yet unborn that have been emotionally brainwashed that Ojukwu released Chief Awolowo from prison by their fore-bearers.

I guess you're one of those thinking everything is right with the VP. He's my brother and I dont like the way he's being treated from day one, from elrufai intimidation to that of aba kyari and the shutting of aso vila chapel's door against him on sundays ,whilst leaving the mosque doors widely open on fridays. This is very wrong and we cannot coexist in a situation like this . Truth be told. No nation succeeds where ethnicity and religion take precedence.
