It not just African but black people in general . A lot of us do not know how to run or own a business. Looking at some of the posters on here, it’s not hard to tell why we do not hire some of our own .
tjsts why I intend changing the narratives myself in my own small way, running my own business and growing it from the scratch to top

I'm living up to my instincts as an Igbo man. grin (na joke o)
But then, if I can run a business and employ 10 Nigerians And another ioens one that hired 7 and another 8, you aee how we are slowly deleting the poverty chainhuh

And we can hire exclusively ourselves, other ethnic groups do it, but black man will want to look good and hire randomly

Let us empower our people

Gerrard59:
In recent years, there has been a surge in Nigerians relocating to Canada. But of worrisome concern is that this set of Nigerians are in the middle class category (in well-paid jobs). People earning very well and doing exceptionally in their careers are packing their bags and leaving. A Facebook post I read; a top player in the Nigerian corporate environment was astounded and asked, what is happening in Canada? As a friend of his earning a million naira relocated to Canada, and this is the 4th person he knows doing same within 6 months! The comments' box showed everything; young (mid-20s & mid-30s) individuals are leaving their well-paid jobs in Nigeria, carrying with them their family to Canada (those who are married).

This cuts across sectors and industries. An example is the Big4 community where partners are no longer afraid of their top staff being poached by MNCs or fellow consultancies but them relocating to Canada/Australia/Germany/UK/US. I remember an individual whose posts I check occasionally, has relocated to Australia. While in Nigeria he worked with a Big4. Another is finishing his plans to relocate to Canada and works with a Big4. Yet another who worked with a Big4 (was a Manager during his time) has left (wetin do Big4 and Canada sef?). Correspondingly, there has been an increase of mid and senior level positions being advertised by the Big4 firms. Who else has noticed?

What about the top telco firm that lost not less than 15 high performing staff in what was described as the Canada tsunami in 2015? shocked Ditto in other telco firms. What about the medical sector where someone mentioned that 7 consultants have relocated to the UK within the last 2 years? Professionals ranging from plastic surgeons to pathologist to urologists to radiologists to neurologists to orthopaedic surgeons. This commentator further went on to say that in a federal hospital (he did not mentioned the name), every senior registrar is writing a foreign examination to leave. But that of Canada is the biggest even though Nigerians are not among the top ten nationalities migrating to Canada (Nigeria is actually 11th behind Eritrea in a survey in 2016).

What could be the reasons that make top performing staff of notable firms to relocate? Where folks earning 12 - 24 million naira annually are leaving? What is in Canada?[/b]

Why are Middle Class Nigerians relocating to Canada?

cc: Lalasticlala & Mynd44

But really, some things are much more than money.

Millennial / Modern trendy Nigerians are increasingly finding it difficult to thrive in the Nigerian work space that is so primitive and barbaric

Thank you for mentioning this. Alot of people think that opening business here is easy. That why I asked in previous posts what common businesses are Nigerians known for having here? Asians are known for having nail salons , beauty supply stores and restaurants. Middle eastern known for having gas stations and liquor stores . Indians known for having 7 eleven.
the question is....

What is stopping the African migrants from opening their own businesses? huhhuh

the answer is complex and not straightforwardly, but lazinesss, myopia and lack of vision has a huge role to play

imagine if we had a sizeable number of African run successful business chains......

We would have been hiring ourselves the way the Asians do, and be moving ahead

But as I said, Myopia, PhD syndrome amongst others is to blame undecided

This is a poor write up tbh.. known of these reasons is why lagos is "King" just what comes with being d king..
Lagos is d king mainly when it colonel masters came dy settled on here as d "capital".nd dy dd dat bkaz of logistics reasons close to sea for transportation of goods, so trade was easier, den d banks came nd opened in lagos too 4 dis reason, den no electronic transactions so dy brought pounds with ships.. Blah blah blah.. Which lead to lagos being what it is today.. No state in Nigeria can come close. Even if you make Barrack Obama their governor. D economy of lagos alone is bigger than that of most African countries. Only d federal govt can truly develop other states to d point lagos has reached. Move d financially industry from Lagos nd d up nd coming tech industry from lagos nd we stand a chance.. No developed country in d world u wud see 80% of d main industries situated or having their H/Q in one city.. Because of Politics nd what might b termed tribalism or favouritism d FG can't take industries from Lagos as it wud b deemed unfair.(nd if we are to go further everything actually dates back to d age of slavery)
the thing is that in many parts of Nigeria, you will still be seen as the "settler" and for some reason when you start making it, the locals will want to tax you

my cousin told me of what rivers youths do, they call it "devy " or something like that, I.e charging and extorting business owners

While you might seem to make some seemingly valid point, you have to realise there are reasons why that has not happened and might not happen anytime soon. It is about people in other areas having a different kind of attitude, attitude that allows business opportunities to thrive just like op mentioned. People often claim that it is political gang up that made Lagos develop to the detriment of other places but when you realise that no one can hold you captive without your consent, then we begin to realise there will be need for attitudinal change in others for the development being sought to come.
The multinationals did not just found themselves in Lagos for no reason, it is because the place provides the peaceful and business-conducive environment they desire. Even you won't dare to set up your business in a highly restive and violent area.
the thing is that Nigerians don't ask questions

Warri used to be the hub for international oil companies and all, things were going good there

Until the kidnappings and "na our oil people" held sway

The people fled, and warri is a shadow of itself

Short sightedness of the stupid people there killed that city.

A lot of cities down south there have similar mentality

You cannot commit yourself to building concrete structure there when you have it at the back if your mind that one day, the rug could be pulled off your feet.

After all, it was in the same region that "abandoned properties" back in the day was rife (if you get the drift)

Nigerians need reorientation and need to stop this "I'm an indigene" bullshit

Exactly!

Nigerians are using their own hands to destroy their country

in the USA for example, once you appear as a rich guy, the IRS is investigating your tax returns to see if indeed your source of income and your income itself tallies with the tax you are paying

If there id a discrepancy, such person has a lot of explanations to do

the system does not encourage illegal wealth

pinpoint what our currency was going to do next, there is no telling if the right opportunities would be available offshore at that exact point in time. Our current circumstances are a case in point: the rand has recovered since its weak point last year, but assets in major developed markets such as the US are generally looking expensive.
A better strategy is to figure out how much of your investment portfolio you want to place offshore and what you are trying to achieve and then formulate a plan to invest as regularly as possible in carefully selected assets. Arguably, it is more important spending your time identifying which global assets you want to invest in for the long term, than determining the exact perfect entry point – which as we know is impossible to do reliably.
That's what I'm thinking too...

Diversifying into New areas /continents /markets

Nigeria is home to the highest concentration of illiterates in the world. Sometimes, it's hard to differentiate between an illiterate and an educated person in Nigeria. Sincerely, I don't know if it's because of culture but it's true.

When Sanusi was CBN governor, he pushed e-banking into the mainstream. But the challenge he faced was convincing the illiterates and the educated illiterates as well.

Speaking of Kenya, I think Nigeria has the biggest FinTech industry on the continent, and the first country to evolve a unicorn. So, it's unfair to compare Nigeria with a country whose population isn't up to a quarter of Nigeria's population.

In conclusion, Nigeria is miles away from implementing e-

It costs Nigerian government a lot to destroy mutilated cash

Even before CBN accepts that damaged cash from banks, the commercial banks pay some form of tax, that's why some banks reject damaged cash

It's only in Nigeria that people sell mint (new wads of note). Indeed, a lot of crazy things happen here. But this policy, if fully implemented, will run those people out of business.
