thoth: African as a continent with its resources and population does not have to be affected by any economic disaster anywhere else apart from Africa.
And yess we can pull them down if we are coordinated and we want to.It could be as devastating as we want it to be. if we want half of their populations to starve we can do it easily if we have the coordination.
Do you think Africa feeds the world? That's a joke! The Western countries are developing synthetic substitutes to our major cash crop exports. If Africa wants to develop, we have to improve Intra regional trade in Africa, Diversify our economies, and be united. If these are lacking, NO DEVELOPMENT.

Fellow Akokites, I have this advice for us... ASUU is on strike, we know. Instead of moaning and feeling down hearted, GO OUT THERE AND LEARN A SKILL. For me, i'm learning Barbering and i cut my people's hair at home for a small fee . One benefit this strike has afforded me is that i have a skill by the side. The next challenge would be to learn how to fix weavon for ladies (i love challenges) if this strike lingers. So that's my advice for us. P.S. We don't want imposters on this thread; God is watching oh!

The American economy is a rat race, winner takes all economy, if you can face that, then you can survive in the USA. US economy can still be salvaged if certain treaties such as NAFTA is abolished because to me, that treaty is a disaster. If the American economy crumbles (as some ignorant people wish/clamour) the effect on the world would be disastrous.

America is a tough place, sso is the rest o the world. If you want to emigrate to the usa, you must PLAN and know what to expect. Even the bible tells us to calculate the cost.m..... I think that is the message of this thread, or so I thought. If you don't plan, you will REGRET it.

thoth: You are quite right..though i believe it is not too late yet. in fact now is the right time, If Africa can get hold of its resources and unite as Europe and North America is in economic mess we can literally pull them down if we are coordinated. the problem is that as you stated the Black man and especially Nigerians are too confused to make any move in the right direction.
Pull them down? You must be joking. Don't you know that if you pull them downn the ripple effeect would be disastrous to the African continent? Instead of working out a frame work that will integrate western technology with locaal innovations and intellegence, as the Asian tigers are doing, to gain the respect of the world and to be seen as equals and not beggars, you are advocating for pull down? Think!
Foreign Affairs › Re: Blacks Are Educated To Feel Inferior - Dr Bedford Umez by Ugosample(m): 12:53pm On Oct 04, 2013
You see, this is the problem we have in Africa. Theree is no need to blame the white minority who misled their people into believing that they are superior becaause what has happened has happened. What we need to do is to forge ahead, desensitise yourself into believing that you can do it. Blacks or do I say Africans that determined that they can achieve surmounted the challenges and succeeded. Ben Carson is a worthy example. About our culture, I think it hhas to do with presentation. South korea among other asian countries are idol worshipers because of their presentation. Their shrines are proper buildings built with traditiional architecture and it is also very clean. Can thee same be said o our shrinnes? It is protrayed as dirty by our own media because in actual fact, it's dirty and unattractive. I we had proper buildings with traditional design it will be more appreciated.

The world is in for a bumpy ride. angry angry See one of the disadvantages of globalisation? Events happening in one region of the world affects the other, in most times negatively. Eg crisis in the middle east making the price of oil to escalate, causing hardships in many countries due to increase in cost of energy, etc.so don'tt wish the tootal downfall o a region, especially the super regions such as the US because the ripple effeect may be more than you bargained for.

manny4life: Abeg o, no to either.

The Yuan on purpose devalues its currency from time to time and their economy ain't doing well lately.

The Euro has been sick for a while now, how many Euro countries aren't experiencing austerity measures?

All these are fiat money and prone to devaluation so let's hold our reserve in what we know best - THE GOLD STANDARD.

Gold as a commodity doesn't seem to be on the harsh decline now.
Thank you! Modern day banking and currency is traced to the british goldsmiths. Owners of gold deposited gold and they got reciepts/paper. After a while, the owners of the gold could exchange their reciepts for other commodities. The next recipient of that paper/reciept knows that it is backed by a certain value/quantity of gold. That is note/"money" backed with value. But today what are our currencies backed with? And this is the way things are to be done, and that is the only safe way. This is the reason why inflation was alien to Britain until the turn of the 20th century/late 19th century. P.S. I know it's a bit off topic... My apologies.

CFCfan: The CBN could convert our dollar reserves to euro or the Chines Yuan.
At what rate? The ripple effect of the trashing of the dollar will be disastrous to our externak reserves. It will mean we have to spend more of our dollars to buy a fixed amount of Euro i.e. If the depreciation of the dollar is sharp. The only way to avert this is for the CBN to start converting NOW if such is to happen in future if not? Wahala go dey o! You suggested Yuan for foreign reserves? China is a currency manipulator and any country that has its reserves (say 80% and above) that country does so at its own risk. These things are more complex than the layman thinks.

Dethrone who? Remove petrodollar? That will not happen. If the dollar is thrashed, remember that Nigeria as well as many other emerging countries have their reserves in dollars. What do you think will happen to the reserves? China will be worst hit. Their trillion $$ that they've worked so hard to accumulate will lose value. I forgive you because you lack rudimentary knowledge of economics to understand the economic implication of what you wrote to the whole world.

The world is in for a bumpy ride. If America collapses economically, EU, AFRICA AND THE ASIAN TIGERS WILL FALL with it. One of the major disadvantages of globalisation. For many companies of the world, American consumers are their major targets. From Toyota to Blackberry(before) to Hyundai to Samsung and the list is very long, their American market is key to their success. The pauperisation (my word) of the USA will have great effect on these companies and will turn their profits to losses, which in turn will lead to lay offs in their home countries, worsening the unemployment situation in these countries. . The same goes for American companies such as Apple and Googke and the rest. A fall in chinese income wilk reduce demand for their products. Sad but true.

The world is in for a bumpy ride. If America collapses, the ripple effect will be a global catastrophe. China's bubble would burst because their economy is export driven, Western Europe will also collapse completely because the volume of trade between EU and the USA is the biggest trading bloc on earth. Africa (Nigeria inclusive) will also be in crisis as most countries in Africa depend on foreign aid and assistance, and when these countries (US AND EU) cannot sustain the aid, trouble sets in. Also, the prosperity of many African countries is tied to the prosperity of the US AND EU (most especially north africa. Since the economic woes of EU began, North Africa has been having it rough) and when these countries are down, what happens to Africa? The workd has gotten to the stage where conditions (both economic and political) of one region affects another in a positive or negative way (Globalisation) that's the sad truth.

Well yes! As a matter of fact, i paid #515 into my savings a/c today. I wish i could scan the teller. The problem many Nigerians have is that they try to impress the next person. I discarded that trait in my secondary school days. The next person's opinion in this case doesn't count. Besides after leaving the banking hall, those you are trying to impress may not even remember your face. That is also the case in many scenerios. So what is the use? Can anyone answer?

9icegee: lol u made me laugh. All these 'facts' can be gotten online. U almost proof wot u were actually trying to disproof, tht u watch too mAny tV (add internet)
Well, if you say i read a lot on the internet, you are right, t.v.? No way. I'm an Economics student and i've done a lot of research about the workings, facts and figures. And besides, i thought the question the thread raised was what you know about the USA. I just said a bit of what i know and .i was accused of watching too much t.v. By the way, a bit off topic, when my niece visited us Nigeria with her parents (her dad Nigerian, her mum American) i overhead her praying in the morning in the room and her prayer ended God bless me, and the United States of America. I was suprised. She said that her teacher(s) always told the class that the US is the greatest country. I asked another boy in my neighbourhood (about 7 years old) whether he prays for Nigeria and his response? I cannot waste my prayers on a useless country. I was shocked! If anyone doubts me, conduct your own personal research, ask primary school students arround you. My point? Our schools (most of them) do not instill a sense of nationalism and pride in the youths and with what they see happening, they conclude that there is no hope for the country. For the country to change this trend must be reversed. Good day.
Nairaland General › Re: 3 Teenagers Arrested For Attempting To Stowaway In Lagos by Ugosample(m): 12:37pm On Oct 01, 2013
All these are happening because many Nigerians have lost HOPE in this country, especially the youth. Without the hope that tomorrow will be better than tnday, progress cannot be made. I did a personal research in my neighbourhood and i discovered that out of 50 young males i interrogated casually, 36 of them believe that there is no hope in the country and travelling out is their only hope. If you think i'm bluffing, interrogate other youths within your vicinity to find out. This lack of hope is the reason for the Stowaway kids we are currently experiencing.

@ozo_emeka Don't assume that i'm not intellegent or base my assumptions on t.v. I know a lot of facts about the world too so don't assume. First prosperity in the USA is not evenly distributed as the Eastern sea board is the most prosperous and the southern states (louisiana, mississipi Arkansas e.t.c) with the exception of Texas and maybe Florida and Georgia. Did you also know that more than 50 percent of the black population live in the southern states? Did you also know that most North Dakota residents are of German descent ? Did you know that New york city has the higest number of Jews in a geographical region outside Israel? Did you know that most Asian immigrants settle in the pacific rim?Did you also know that the USA owes China $1.4 trillion dollars in bonds and other securities and not $15 trillion as many claim? Did you also know that Japan is next in line as the second biggest creditor to the USA with a cumulative amount of over $1 trillion? Do you also know that NAFTA (You should know what that means) is one of the biggest undoings of the USA as trade deficits began to climb after the agreement was signed with Mexico and Canada? Do you also know that the USA have 11 aircraft carriers while Russia has 1 and France 1 with the rest of the world having none? Did ynu know California's economy is bigger than the whole of West Africa's economy put together? Do you know that Los Angeles is the only city in the USA that has no clear majority as no ethnic group (race) has up to 50 percent? If i continue, space would fail me. Is this what i watched on t.v.? I'm not offended, i'm just saying.

That's like saying the most beautiful place in Nigeria is Enugu because ALL THE MOVIES I watch with big houses and cars are all made in Enugu
2 We like to think that the United States is unique among nations in the way it attracts and integrates immigrant. But in our increasingly globalized and prosperous world, the data suggests America is just average. That may have been true a century ago, when Ellis Island welcomed the world’s huddled masses. But it’s not true today. Large-scale immigration is a worldwide phenomenon tied to contemporary globalization. Porous borders and rising education levels have allowed tens of millions of people in developing societies to become more mobile, and new communications and transportation technologies give everyone access to information about other countries and ways to get there. Perhaps most important, rising global demand has created vast new opportunities for foreign labor – whether it’s to bolster shrinking labor pools across much of Europe, provide services in thinly-populated, oil-rich countries in the Middle East, or cater to wealthy global elites in dozens of tax havens.

In fact, when it comes to foreign-born residents, America looks fairly average.

Consider the percentages of foreign-born residents living today in various nations: America, with just under 13 percent of its population foreign-born, according to U.N. data, ranks 40th in the world for immigrants as a share of the population. By contrast, across the 10 most immigrant-intensive countries, foreign-born people account for between 77 percent and 42 percent of their total populations.

Austria, Ireland, New Zealand and Norway also lead the United States in immigrants as a share of their populations, as do the smaller and less-advanced nations of Estonia, Latvia, Belize, Ukraine, Croatia, and Cyprus. (World Population Policies, Page 81
By United Nations. Dept. of Economic and Social Affairs. Population Division
)

Of the remaining seven nations, four are in the Middle-East – Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain – where tens of thousands of foreign workers are needed to help meet global demand for oil and provide services for native populations who have grown wealthy off of their oil. The other three countries in the top 10 are global tax havens and financial centers – Andorra, Monaco, and Singapore -- that draw thousands of global elites followed by foreign workers to provide their services.

The next 10 most immigrant-heavy countries, where foreign-born persons comprise between 42 percent and 22 percent of their populations, include five more tax havens (Nauru in Micronesia, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, San Marino, and Switzerland) and three more oil rich countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Brunei). The two others in this group are the special cases of Israel, where Jewish national identity is the draw, and Jordan, home to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the Iraqi and Israel-Arab conflicts.

Beyond the top 20 countries for foreign-born residents, numerous other nations that more closely resemble the United States, in economic opportunities and social benefits, also draw immigrants in greater relative numbers than America. For example, some 19 percent to 20 percent of the populations of Australia and Canada are foreign-born, compared to our 13 percent. Austria, Ireland, New Zealand and Norway also lead the United States in immigrants as a share of their populations, as do the smaller and less-advanced nations of Estonia, Latvia, Belize, Ukraine, Croatia, and Cyprus. A similar pattern emerges from OECD data covering 25 industrialized countries from 2001 to 2010. Over that decade, the share of the American population born somewhere else has averaged 12.1 percent. By this measure, the United States trails not only such countries as Australia, Austria, Canada, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Israel, as noted above, but also Sweden, Germany, and Belgium.

Again, you are ma
