Lonmin miners that were arrested at Marikana mine earlier this month have been charged with the murder of 34 of their colleague who were shot by police during violent protests earlier this month.

The politically controversial move falls under the "common purpose" doctrine because the 270 miners were in the crowd that allegedly incited police on August 16.

The "common purpose" doctrine was used by former apartheid forces against black activists fighting against National Party rule.

The BBC reported on Thursday that at the time, the ANC campaigned against the doctrine that is now being used.

There is speculation that critics will accuse the ruling party of behaving like the apartheid regime.

Police opened fire on the protesting crowd, killing 34 and wounding 78 others. A commission of inquiry, set up by President Jacob Zuma, has yet to give its final report.

'Infamous doctrine'
The miners appeared in the Ga-Rankuwe Magistrate's Court on Thursday where their bail application was postponed to next week.

"This is a very outdated and infamous doctrine," lawyer Jay Surju told the BBC's Focus on Africa.

"It was discredited during the time of apartheid."

The best known case was that of the "Upington 14", who were sentenced to death in 1989 for the murder of a policeman in 1985.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Frank Lesenyego told the BBC the workers would all face murder charges – including those who were unarmed or were at the back of the crowd.

"This is under common law, where people are charged with common purpose in a situation where there are suspects with guns or any weapons and they confront or attack the police and a shooting takes place and there are fatalities," he said.

Late goals from Thomas Eisfeld and Chuks Aneke secured victory for Arsenal in the opening game of their tour against a dogged, dangerous Malaysia XI side.

Arsène Wenger’s side dominated possession and twice came close in the first half through Andre Santos. But right on the stroke of the interval they fell behind to a superb Mohamad Azmi Muslim strike from the edge of the area.

A much-changed Arsenal side continued to press after the restart, but found the hosts tough to break down. But Eisfeld’s 87th-minute strike restored parity, before Aneke claimed the winner with a deflected effort.

An entertaining game deserved a goal, and when it came it was worth the wait for those Malaysians watching on. The hosts had been a threat, and with the half entering injury time Muslim had time on the edge of the area and arrowed a shot into the top right-hand corner. It was nothing short of top class.

It was all change for Arsenal at the interval - apart from Mannone - as Wenger shuffled his pack, blooding youngsters such as Aneke, Nico Yennaris and Ignasi Miquel. Two of the more senior statesmen, Theo Walcott and Alex Song, were also thrown into action as Arsenal went in search of an equaliser.

But the hosts remained a threat themselves and Mohd Safee Bin Mohd Sali came close to doubling their advantage after working his way into the box and testing Mannone with a firm effort.

Benik Afobe was presented with a glorious chance to restore parity in the 66th minute as Song released him down the middle with an incisive through-ball. The young striker was in acres of space but his left-footed effort was well blocked by the onrushing goalkeeper.

Arsenal were pressing and probing but to no avail, and Afobe had another half-chance in the 81st minute but sliced his close-range effort over the bar.

But finally the equaliser came when, in the 87th minute, Yennaris broke into the box on the right flank and cut the ball back for Eisfeld to slot home confidently.

But there was still more to come and moments later Aneke took aim from outside the area and saw his shot strike the defender and bounce up over the keeper and into the net.

A fitting finale to a fascinating contest.

We have completely abused and stripped the world of any iota of fraternity over the past 500 years, history is very clear on that issue (be it Africa, Americas or Asia...).I actually believe that there is a strong pathological gene inherent in Caucasian males, but I digress.

When I referred to International, I meant a professional management team culled on the basis of their skills and drawn from places like S. Korea, Brasil, Norway, China etc... where they are paid to push the country on in leaps and bounds...to a place, which quite frankly, I believe the Nigerian people deserve.

As it is now, it seems like the whole country has been kidnapped by the elite, who have a large ransom for you all to be set free.
