The Edo State Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 19 governorship election, Mr Godwin Obaseki , Saturday, declared that he is certain of victory while unveiling the Make Edo Great Again (MEGA) plan to Edo electorate.
The governor made the declaration at the flag-off of his governorship election campaign at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State, after a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin.
Dignitaries at the event include governors drawn from the South-South region and other parts of the country including Ifeanyi Okowa, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Nyesom Wike, Duoye Diri, Seyi Makinde and Sen. Bala Mohammed of Delta, Sokoto, Rivers, Bayelsa, Oyo and Bauchi states, respectively.
Other guests at the event include Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi; National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus; Chairman of DAAR Communications, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi; Chief Tom Ikimi; Sen. Clifford Ordia and Barr. Ken Imasuagbon, among others.
According to Governor Obaseki, “I am happy today that I have been given the party’s flag to contest the governorship election on September 19, 2020. I did it before and will do it again. We would focus on improving governance to transform the lives of our people. In the next four years, Edo would continue in the quest to become the economic hub of the nation.”
The governor unveiled the programme for his second term bid titled Make Edo Great Again (MEGA), which he said would prepare the state for a post-coronavirus (COVID-19) world.
He noted: “We are saying that we will, working with you, make Edo great again. Our message is one of hope and the future. We are one people; we have one dream and one heritage. The blood of our forefathers who built an empire and dominated their space still runs in us today. If they were able to achieve what they achieved over 500 years ago, we will achieve much more today.”
Explaining the focus of the campaign’s MEGA theme, he said: “The plan we have adopted will focus on how to use governance to support our people. We will use government to create enabling business environment so that Edo people can do their business without being harassed by anyone, especially thugs.
Responding to attacks by sponsored thugs earlier in the day, he said, “The opposition has now resorted to violence. Please, we do not want bloodshed. One of their billionaires hired thugs today around the Oba’s Palace. I hear they are destroying cars with PDP flags. Do not retaliate. God will retaliate for us. Their strategy is to scare the people. They are saying that what they did today is a sample of what they intend to do on September 19.”
On his part, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national Governorship Campaign Council for Edo 2020 gubernatorial election and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, urged all Edo people to come out en masse to cast their votes for Governor Obaseki and equally protect their votes to return the governor in office, to enable him continue his good work for the majority of the people.
Wike noted: “The APC, for me, does not have any credible candidate. Also, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, according to the sacked National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, is a thief.”
“Don’t allow your votes to be rigged as APC believes in rigging. I want to assure you this time that this election will be difficult to rig. South-South is for PDP and Edo belongs to PDP. Edo people should not allow Edo to be rigged. I urge you to defend your votes and ensure Obaseki is returned for a second term to continue his good works in the state.”
Also, Governor of Delta State and Chairman of South-South PDP Governors’ Forum, Ifeanyi Okowa, urged Edo voters to reject the antics of Oshiomhole, the APC and its candidate, Ize-Iyamu, adding: “Looking at the debt Oshiomhole left for the state, I pitied Obaseki but as a technocrat, the governor did well and has greatly reduced the debt burden of the state, and has put Edo on the path of development.
Meanwhile, Governors of Bauchi and Oyo states, Sen. Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, described Obaseki as a resource person that has represented the state and nation well.
Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, charged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that Edo State Governorship election is free, fair and credible.
Tambuwal added: “No single individual can decide the fate of Edo people as no one man is superior to Edo people.”

Dr. Stella Okotie, a staff of the University of Benin, was on Tuesday sent to early grave when a commercial bus driver running away from police extortion rammed into her.

CAMPUS GIST reports that the incident happened in Benin City at about 6:30pm along the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway, close to the UNIBEN main gate.

The deceased was until her demise, a lecturer at the UNIBEN faculty of Education. Aside Okotie, one person was said to have also been killed with another sustaining some injuries.

The victims were killed while a commercial bus driver was running away from the police officers who had earlier flagged his vehicle down, demanding N100 bribe.

One of the officers was said to have jumped into the moving bus and engaged in a physical struggle with the bus driver, dragging the steering wheel in the process.

According to an eyewitness, the late UNIBEN staff was standing at the walkway alongside her husband, Dr. Williams Okotie, also a staff of UNIBEN and her son when the bus hit her and their stationery UNIBEN water supply van.

“The police officers were pursuing a commercial bus in quest for money leading to a physical struggle between one of the officers and driver of the vehicle,” he told CAMPUS GIST.

“While the police was struggling the steering wheel with the driver, the bus ram into Dr. Okotie who was standing on the walk way just by the side of her vehicle killing her on the spot.”

Following the incident, the police officers fled the scene leaving behind one of their colleague who was beaten to pulp and almost left for dead by angry mob but for the quick intervention of a woman believed to be his wife.

Consequently, residents and passersby barricaded the ever-busy new Lagos road right in front of the UNIBEN Ugbowo main gate, causing heavy traffic gridlock for hours.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor could not be reached for comments. The university management is yet to issue a statement as at the time of filing this report.

In response to incident, the UNIBEN medical students are embarking on a solidarity protest on Wednesday (today) against the killing of the mother of their former colleague.

A statement issued by Comr. Goodluck Eghosa Osemwenkhae, Director of Information, Media and Publicity, on behalf of the union, said the protest would cover the police headquarters and the Edo state government house.

It was even know that Oshiomole and his political boys were trying to used the house of assembly to impeached Governor Obaseki immediately the house is inaugurated and if they have succeeded to make Victor Edoror as speaker or make governance difficult for Obaseki, he got the secret information and played a fast one on Oshiomole and his boys. Let me remind you, have you forgotten what Oshiomole did when he won his governorship at the court? He told a lie that he wants to renovate the assembly building. Oshiomole quickly removed the roof. Oshiomole later finally succeeded to buy some PDP house members and they decamped to ACN before influencing the house to impeached PDP speaker Mr Garuba Zakawanu, they now install Uyi Igbe as the speaker who was so loyal to Oshiomole and he was ACN member then. Nobody including you will fold your hands to be impeached as Governor or support someone who will make governance difficult for you without doing anything. Go check history, Oshiomole did worst to protect his sit as governor, he fought against his impeached. If you are blaming Obaseki now and praising Oshiomole, you are a hypocrite.
Everyone knows that for a governor to succeed, he or she must have a house of assembly that is loyal and agree to the terms of the governor. It's also on public records on how Tony Kabaka and Samson Osagie were ranting that Obaseki can never come back as governor of Edo State. They started it before the inauguration of Edo State House of assembly.
Anything about Edo politics, I'm grounded in it and no online individual can deceive me to believe what they stand for. Most people posting rubbish against the governor have been paid peanut with promise of something after victory. For me, I know Obaseki is not a saint but he has tried in governance and a second term will not be a mistake. Election are won on polling units and not online. Edo cannot be sold to political fews, Edoites is going to sound it that the power to elect a governor or any persons in political positions are with the people and not the political few or godfathers. Most of the crowd in rallies are paid 1-2k, you will see politicians displaying to deceive the people, it's a lie, most people that formed the crowd have been paid. Ohunbamu have been a political boy to Oshiomole. it was Oshiomole that gave him the APC ticket to contest for house of Representatives for Egor and ikpoba okha but he lost to Jude Ize-Idehen. Oshiomole was also the one that nominated him as commissioner designated before he was confirmed in all to compensate him for his loosing. Oshiomole was doing all these because he was among the few house of assembly members of Edo State that stood for him when he got the info that majority of PDP assembly members were planning to impeached him then. Obaseki was not a politician but he tried for all he has done. All these issues of his former cabinet members are against him would have not been there if he has sacked all of them in 2019 in the name of cabinet shakeup, he would have used the opportunity to wipe out all the bad eggs in his cabinet and then replaced them with his loyalists. Most of Obaseki cabinet members were nominated by those fighting him now, you can't expect those guys now to leave their political benefactors. Try understand politics before talking.

Over 87 elected Councilors in the Edo State have vowed to resist the harassment and official intimidation meted out to them by Governor Godwin Obaseki to forcefully join the PDP.

The Councilors, most of whom were elected on the platform of the APC, dismissed claims of their defection allegedly sponsored in the media by Godwin Obaseki to portray false solidarity, while insisting that the Governor’s performance since 2016 has neither inspired confidence nor provided motivation for them to join his defection.

The spokesperson for the group, Hon. Emwinghare Osabuohien of Ward 2, Egor Local Government Council, condemned their suspension which he deemed illegal and the refusal of the state government to pay their salaries over the expression of their constitutionally protected freedom to associate and maintain membership of a preferred political party.

Other Councilors, including Hon. Okpamen Angela representing Ovia West, Hon. Kingsley Ogiri, and Hon. Godwin Ekhator, vowed to remain resolute in fighting for the victory of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the All Progressives Congress at the polls on the 19th of September.

According to them, the few Councilors who defected caved in to the pressure and intimidation of the State Government.
