philip0906: So Lagos state does not generate enough to have the bolded? Are you remotely joking Or what exactly are you saying? Even cities in Africa such as Algiers, Cape Town etc have infrastructure that dwarfs Lagos. Revenue for Dubai was 110 billion dollars for only 3 million people in 2017 , revenue for Lagos was 920 million dollars for about 17.5 million people. So in summary , Dubai and Lagos are not on the same level. |

philip0906: I am not making a comparison between Lagos & Dubai...My statement was purely alluding to the fact that Lagos generates enough revenue to be as beautiful as Dubai. Dubai is a beautiful city with a functional mass transit system, no potholes on their roads, functional traffic lights/street lights etc The revenue Lagos state generates is MORE THAN ENOUGH to make this city have all those good things you see in Dubai No , it can not , Lagos generates little revenue compared to Dubai. |

I keep saying Africans are far worse than even their colonial masters.
Ever since the British left us to our independence, one would have thought, 'fine, let's make this country excel'. But what do we have today?
Our very own in power are re-colonising us under the guise of democracy.
Africans are a disgrace - anywhere you go, wherever they are, even in the Western World. Strife, envy, jealousy, no team work, too much gossip ... always Africans. Can you just stfu |

budaatum: Where did China's foreign capital come from?
Why did foreigners decide to put their capital in China? Chinas foreign capital from countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan , south Korea , u.s.a and a host of others. Foreigners decided to put their capital in China because of cheap costs of labor. It turns out that when a country is poor , it can use it's poverty to an advantage. |

Damod88: China growth rate is slowing because it is gradually becoming a developed country. When China was really doing the catch up, it grew 12 per cent annually which neither the USA nor any western European countries could do when they were developing countries. In 1978 the GDP of China was a mere 223 million dollars, forty years later in 2017 China GDP became the world second largest at 14 trillion dollars, seven times bigger than Africa's GDP. This is a spectacular achievement for China and the rest of the world. All we need do in Africa is to learn from China's economic miracle so that we too can move our people out poverty. What you should know is that china achieved such growth rates because of foreign capital .Foreign capital in such large amounts thatt the u.s and Western European countries never had access to. |

China posts its lowest quarterly growth in 27 years as the trade war drags on China's economy grew 6.2% in the second quarter from a year ago, the country's statistics bureau said on Monday.
While China's second quarter GDP was lower on-year, industrial activity in June "surprised to the upside," said Nomura economists in an analysis, with year-on-year growth of industrial production jumping to 6.3% versus 5.0% in May. Retail sales growth jumped to 9.8% from a year ago in June compared to 8.6% in May.
"Bulls might claim that this is a result of the resilience of the Chinese economy and the effectiveness of Beijing's countercyclical easing measures," wrote the Nomura economists said in a note.
Factor in the size of China while you're at it and compare it with GDP Growth Rate in the United States which averaged 3.22 percent from 1947 until 2019. Now tell, how many countries achieve anything as high as China's perceived failure? The U.s grows at that rate because it is a developed country , you can't compare it with china ,when you are playing catch-up you have faster economic growth rates. Developed countries hardly have more than 4 percent growth rate. |

grandstar: Does the country need the steel plant or the steel?
Nigeria lacks comparative advantage in producing steel so we are better off importing Secondly steel is dirt cheap presently due to overcapacity in China that it is far cheaper importing steel than making it here.
Nigerian users of steel will become very noncompetitive if they depend on locally made steel from Ajaokuta.
Trump within the past 2 years increased import duty on steel into America. He did this to protect American steel workers.
What was the result? The number of workers employed by steel plants is about 500,000 would benefit while it would adversely affect over 6m workers whose factories depend on imported steel. The losers were far more than the winners.
It was so bad that some American companies simply shifted their plants abroad, the most famous being the bike maker Harley Davidson. Brilliant , brilliant , brilliant!!!! |

But 25 years after the start of black majority rule, that's excuse isn't so tenable again.
The biggest problem the country faces maybe the same that Okonkwo in things fall apart faced- living in the shadow of the past that you make bad decisions.
Okonkwo was terrified that people will view him lazy and cowardly like his father and went too far in order to dispel any doubt.
South Africa to a large extent lives in the shadow of Apartheid even though it is long gone.
For instance, it has rigid labour laws which discourages companies from hiring and is the primary cause of the very high unemployment rate plaguing the country. The primary reason for these counter productive labour laws is that the Unions were supporters of the ANC during Apartheid and this has compelled the ANC to scratch the Unions backs by making laws which overprotect the workers to the disadvantage of the employers.
South Africa has refused to privatise a single entity because those most likely to purchase majority of the shares are the whites and that will be a unacceptable to the blacks.
It refused to take on the high crime rate because it did not want the blacks to feel like they were under an occupation force like in the days of Apartheid where the SAP (South African Police) was a tool for sever racial oppression.
It is finding it hard to improve the quality of education because the teachers are part of the Unions. The ANC has failed it's people |

Only 26 percent of south Africans students are said to have basic skills in maths and science.Industrial Giants like Taiwan and china have about 98 percent. With a woeful performance like this , The chances of south Africa diversifying into the production of high tech goods that power those of high income econmies seems like a mirage. |

Most importantly, there is nothing is South Africa and that's why there's a problem in the first place.
The country has a low per capita income. It is not more than $8,000 per person.
Worse, it suffers from a very high unemployment. And worse, it also suffers from a very high crime rate, much worse than Nigeria. And to add to it, it suffers from slow economic growth.
It has the worst income distribution in the world.
The above are the roots of many of the problems plaguing the country Courtesy of the apartheid. |

Yes, they aren't rich. Best is Higher Middle Income countries. I however see Chile, Panama, Peru becoming rich one day.
The primary problem was that the Spanish and Portugese left these countries with an intrusive and burdensome State. Many are yet to fully unburden themselves from this load. I think Chile with per capita of $ 15, 500 can qualify as being rich. |

I think you have answered the question your self. Ethnic grouping is not a single determinant of whether a country will be successful or not. |
