PoliticsRe: Nigeria Will Soon Be Consumed, If Unemployment Is Not Addressed Now – Ngige by urahara(m): 12:01am On Sep 28, 2019

Oga, to increase the present tax collection from 6% to 25% no be beans. It will be very tough o! Most government should target for now is 10%.

This will involve the doubling of VAT, the reduction in corporate taxes to 12% and increasing the base of those that pay it to at least 50%. Removal of the fuel subsidy will improve government revenue by only $1.7b or 0.3% of GDP for instance. A petrol tax of N20 per litre could yield about 300b a year.
I think that the cbn tax on deposits of 500k and above are to increase tax collection.

PoliticsRe: FG Moves To Revive Cotton, Textile Industries by urahara(m): 10:43pm On Sep 21, 2019
grandstar:
This is utter nonsense. Money down the drain.

It is worsened by the fact government wants the manufacturers to patronise locally made cotton which is notorious for its low quality.

Government should simply allow the market to work and pick and chose winners. This will involve Creative Destruction which the government rejects in the textile and garment sector. The state has always been poor in choosing winners.

The best step government can take to improve the fortunes of this sector is actually the very opposite of its present redundant policy and that is to fully open up the sector to foreign trade. Zero percent import duty on textile fabrics will be a boon to the thousands of mom and pop tailoring shops that abound. The Economist called it 'the kind of unflashy industrialization that actually creates jobs'. Also, many medium to large scale manufacturing factories will be set up to produce garments for both the local and international market. I suspect a horde of Chinese manufacturers will set up shop in Nigeria importing fabrics from China, turning it into garments primarily for exports to nearby Europe and other parts of the globe.

Eventually, many fabric manufacturing plants will be set up as many garment producers will want faster turnaround time and speed to market and that can only be achieved with fabrics produced within the country rather than wait weeks to receive consignments from China. If such a policy like this was implemented, the textile sector will be much bigger than that of the 1980's.

It is time the government applied proper economics rather than the over repeated hubris that achieves negative results.

We have to start from somewhere. Many Nigerians have refused to consume local products. Although I suggest high tariff instead of ban
Many Nigerians don't " refuse " to consume local rice.they go for foreign ones because they are way cheaper. It's not by force for a country to produce everything. The u.s with all their level of advancement still imports coffee ,honey and live animals. Of what use does buying expensive rice benefit the impoverished masses.

No sir , Nigerias local production has failed to meet up with demand. If the production met up with demand , they will be no importation of rice.

Things will only be expensive as it is now only for a short time. By the time people see the only option we have is to consume our locally produced goods, it will encourage more to go into the production. This in the end will bring competition among the producers... naturally, the prices of these items will crash.

Look beyond now, pls
I think we said that about cement.

Spoiler alert .. the price of cement never crashed.

Blue3k:
I dont know I never looked into it. I know Nigeria could have cheaper meats if the allowed imports. I think Ratello consider annother conspiracy. The government banned pork and beef imports but allows frozen fish imports. If we had cheap alternative to Nigerians would simply eat USDA American beef and pork. It's just protectionism running a mock.

Its funny they seem to understand productivity issue I drone on about when it comes to beef production. Its the reason they're bent on doing ruga/NLTP. The ban didnt make herdsmen more productive it just makes meat more expensive.
Shit , so we previously used to import beef.

Its been that way for a few years now. I only started paying attention last month when I downloaded CPI after buhari announced forex ban on food. Food processors will be impacted but they'll have end consumer eat cost.
They said since 2017 , the world has experienced decrease in food prices except from Africa.
PoliticsRe: The Rice Ban: The Conspiracy You Need To Know About It! by urahara(m): 6:33pm On Sep 14, 2019

Its obvious whats going to happen. You're going to get higher prices which will cause more inflation. Food inflation seems to drive CPI. If you're not sure what going to happen just look at previous bans done recently.

Doing nothing is better than making situation worse.

Thanks for compliment.
Chaii , food inflation is even worse than normal inflation . I never knew that.

Taiwan is light years ahead of China.. Taiwanese companies played a major role in China's industrialisation.

if you use a. iPhone for instance, it is manufactured by Foxconn, a Taiwanese company with over a million employees in China. There are so many Taiwanese companies in China that up to one in ten Taiwanese adults lives in China
I think when a lot of people read news headlines and see that China is the world's second largest economy and stuff like that , they feel that China is developed.

Botswana too isnt a corrupt country and has a small govt yet it isn't rated as high a s Rwanda despite having a per capita income of $8000 as compared to rwandas $ 800. Botswana is the least corrupt country in Africa.

This figure is a disgrace, a massive disgrace.

If a country like Rwanda which has a GDP at most a third of Nigeria and with virtually little or no resource, then corruption is a very serious. The culture of impunity is simply too ingrained and Buhari has barely shifted it a tiny little bit.

The sad and abysmal state of things is the mirror reflection of Babangidas rule.

He completely corrupted the polity as he made corruption honourable and fantastically corruption, noble in deed.

To understand how much he corrupted the system, it was his time i. power when 419 started. CBN office on Lagos Island was even used to swindle unsuspecting foreigners. It was respectable to be a thief.

The entire gulf war windfall disappeared without a trace.

Also, mediocrity was endorsed while merit be damned. Prior to Babangida, it was said that NEPA employed the bezt electrical graduates in the country. All that stopped. Cronies were just given posts so they can simply come and chop. Standards sank and thats the way rhings are today. Many institution are in tatters.

How can you build enough roads or manage them properly when the cost are 3 times the normal sum. Despite the stratastrphic prices, a shoddy job may be carried out. Worse, no one is made accountable and therefore perpetuating impunity.

Rawlings left a culture of probity in Ghana while Babangida left the opposite.
I have a feeling this wef stats are highly subjective. How can Rwanda with such a small gdp per capita have one of the best roads in Africa?

I don't know about chronic but unemployment rate is very low.

I don't even understand why because the economy isn't growing very fast. it once did though.

what's even interesting is that women are an active part of the Labour. The unemployment only considers those willing to work It excludes those unwilling to work such housewives.
They said it's because many if the employed are in the informal sector.About 60 percent of total employment.

Google it. Presently stands at 29%. An unemployment rate at 10% is quite high and means it's hard to find a job. So 29% is very high.

Nigeria's 24%. Italy is around 10%. Thats why Immigrants there are seeing pepper.Thailand is 1% which is probably the lowest in the world.
They say Thailand is suffering from chronic labor shortages.
