PoliticsRe: Goodluck Jonathan Again? by uzomagic(m): 6:39pm On Oct 21, 2012
ndu_chucks: The authorities have been able to conduct free and fair elections whenever its a soecial election wherein only one state at a time is involved. They do this by displaying a very heavy millitary/police presence.

I don't believe they can replicate this winning solution in a nation-wide election situation. Current kudos are out of order.
Well, we know our electoral system is still far from perfect but credit must be given to GEJ for his genuine commitment to electoral reforms. In 2011, despite his candidacy, President Jonathan demonstrated a deep sense of fairness and neutrality in appointing Prof. Jega as INEC boss and the elections were widely hailed as reasonably transparent, credible by local and foreign observers. Subsequent elections in Edo,Anambra, Kogi and now Ondo have received wide acclaim for being credible, free, fair and reflective of the choices of the electorate. Clearly, GEJ's commitment to transforming our electoral system is genuine and worthy of commendation. At this rate, Nigerians can be assured that the 2015 general elections will contested and conducted in an even more transparent, credible, free and fair atmosphere. GEJ is silently and steadily transforming Nigeria and it can only get better.

Yomieluv: Jonathan should use his resource to contain the crisis at home in Nigeria.

Why not remove the peg in ur eyes, before removing the log in someone's eye.

This Big brother role of Nigeria in Africa should bo minimized,we have so many problems plaquing us here, rather than forming "all is well" to other nations.
We agree that we have our own challenges but that does not in any way divest us of the 'big brother' role in Africa. In this case, GEJ should be hailed for being proactive as the fundamentalist militia provide training, arms and explosives used to cause mayhem by BH. Fastracking peace efforts in Mali will go a long way in cutting links between BH and al-qaeda and help improve security on our shores

take dat: Shame on all those who organised prayer sessions for her recovery while she claimed she wasn't hospitalised and Shame on Dame for telling us this bold lie after God had intervened in the process of her recovery.
shame on u too for making an issue out of a non-issue. Shame on u for not realising that in the 21st century, the place of a 1st lady in democratic government and governance is non-existent. Shame on u for not realising that nowhere in the world does the wife of any Chief Executive wield any powers that can considerably affect the running of the country or corporation. I'm led to believe however that ur last comment must have been made under the influence of alcohol, drugs or a strong hallucinogen. But above all, it's a SHAME!

MAYOWAAK: Once again, we must impress it upon compatriots who are validating the civic process by asking appropriate questions about the Presidency's handling of the first lady's health safari - and the attendant circus of her arrival - to ignore the Stockholm Syndromed paracletes of power who are all over social media trying to lay a guilt trip on conscientious Nigerians. How can you descend so low? Why ar...
en't you part of the welcome party? Why aren't you rejoicing over her recovery and return? Isn't it the human thing to do? On and on they drone with guilt tripping nonsensical questions. What they forget is the insufferable, foundational fact of a people insulted one and the repeated time by the Presidency. They forget that the Presidency had insisted - against all evidence - that the First Lady was only taking "a moment's rest" after the arduous task of organizing an African First Ladies' jamboree. So what exactly is the point when these noisemakers hound conscientious citizens for not "displaying the spirit of human kindness by wishing the first lady quick recovery"? Quick recovery from what? From a moment's rest? The owner of the head says she has no headache but AGIP social media noisemakers are accusing citizens picking the bill of the non-headache of not taking panadol on behalf of the owner of the healthy head. Speaking of recovery, where is Prof. Wole Soyinka when you need him? Soyinka once blasted Aondoakaa for speaking from "the four compass points of his mouth". Where is he when you need him to ascertain how many compass points there are in the Presidency's mouth? How can somebody arrive from Germany, deny being hospitalized in one sentence, and in the very next sentence, "thank Nigerians who prayed for her recovery"? When they make up their mind to level with the Nigerian people and tell us what really happened - and don't nobody come up with that canard that she is a private citizen and we don't deserve to know - we shall be in the position to sympathize. For now, it is an insult to ask us to sympathize with a lie.
Mr. President, who we all elected by an overwhelming mandate is accountable to us and can be held liable for a plausible reason to be away from the Country. Fortunately, unlike the late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's absence, her absence or presence has no bearing whatsoever on government business as Nigerians did not vote for her or is she accountable to anybody except her spouse. As for ur sympathy, it is neither desired nor wanted. It doesn't change anything. And without it, she has returned safely to the Country after her "rest". Now go get a job and stop idle talk.

Sam Milla: Dear Mrs Jonathan,
If you remember what Nigerians, including you and your husband went through during Yar'adua,s long stay in Saudi Arabia, you will be greatful to those who speculated that you had surgery.
Meanwhile since you did not find it worthy to tell us what you went there to do instead you concentrated on denying the little information we have,
You will still remain in Germany to those who heard that you went there on tv and have not been able to hear that you have returned due to power failure in their areas.

To me, you went to hide Nigeria's money, using hospital as cover.
More allegations will follow until we know for sure what you went there to do.
Yours faithful SM.
Sadly, u have failed to realise that she is not an elected or appointed public office holder and really owes u no explanation for her absence. She neither has access to public funds nor can she hide it in Germany or anywhere else. This childish, emotional rant is as unnecesary as it is uncalled for. In her absence, heaven has not fallen nor have national issues been affected and neither has government business suffered as a result. Only the idle, psychotic and ignorant have decided to make an issue of her absence or arrival. It is thus ridiculous that u have decided to tow this path of infamy and ignorance. Change ur ways!

PoliticsRe: Fuel Subsidy To Go Next Year- Sanusi by uzomagic(m): 9:08am On Oct 12, 2012
Toks2008: MUST WE IMPORT?
We must not import. Importation kills local industry. That is why govt seriously desires to end this subsidy regime which remains a high boost for importation.
If you don't remove subsidy. Importation will continue to be the real deal. No body will be willing to invest a kobo in private refineries.
And the place of private sector driven markets cannot be overemphasized especially in a country that has a bad public sector attitude.

But till we remove hand from subsidy, we will continue to import as Okija juju rightly pointed out
PoliticsRe: Fuel Subsidy To Go Next Year- Sanusi by uzomagic(m):
rahman137: U got it wrong all wrong, even NOI, SLS said it that deregulation will not reduce price of petrol den why all d bullshit. pls oo abeggi if den no give me subsidy wetin else dey wan give. security na me dey provide dt one, water me drill borehole, power me get generator, even road na community effort. pls o without subsidy wetin government go dey dohuhhuhhuhhuhhuh///
You don't understand it that way. What is subsidy in the first place? Government pays our balance of importation and selling at regulated prices. When you cease to regulate price, that is deregulation.

No real private investments can take place in any industry where there is such regulation of prices. just like telecoms, aviation sector etc, govt doesn't need to fix price and pay for the balance. Market forces determine price. Prices are usually high. But it will gradually come down due to competiton amongst local private refineries that will be attracted by the removal of subsidy on importation.

The fear we have about high prices in a post subsidy era will pale into insignificance in the face of prospects for private sector participation in refining.
Until you remove subsidy, no body no matter how rich will invest in refinery in Nigeria. They rather go and establish such refineries abroad and make cool money from importing refined products from there. It is simple economics.

Remove subsidy. It will make importation less attractive because there will not be anymore subsidy funds to share. Oil marketers/trader companies including those earlier licensed by OBJ to start private refineries will now move to build refineries locally. The drive is to crash price and have an edge over other competitors.

At the long term, it is expected that pump price will come as low as 40 Naira. Millions of jobs will also be created. And we will all live ever happily after.
PoliticsRe: Fuel Subsidy To Go Next Year- Sanusi by uzomagic(m): 8:10am On Oct 12, 2012
Of course. It is high time. The issue has been over flogged. It is a gateway to deregulation.
If subsidy goes, private refineries will start because there's nothing else attractive about importation.
When these private refineries become fully operational, there will not be any more stories of PENGASSON. and oil marketers conspiracy. The price of fuel will also come down drastically. Competition will ensure product availability and employment.

come clean mr president.
What do you mean by come clean? Why are you guys poke nosing on the health status of a president's spouse? How is it your business. Isn't it sufficient information that she is sick and resting? What more details do you want to hear? Was patience elected? Or is she a public servant at the national level ? Why this hairsplitting about the health status of someone who is a nonentity according to Nigerian Constitution. How has Madam Patience absence affected governance in any department in Nigeria? Which file is awaiting Patience Jonathan's consideration? What business of governance does Saharareporters want Madam patience Jonathan to come and handle?

I have seen people make all kind of useless comments. Some people even claimed they deserve to know because it is their money. Who told you? Did you see any voucher being raised for her medical trip? Or you saw an allocation in the 2012 budget for her medical bills? So beyond presidency, patience Jonathan does not have money to undergo a medical trip abroad? Does the president no longer earn salaries and allowances? How is it your business to query how the president decides to spend his allowance? How is it your business if the president decides to spend his allowance on his family's medical trip abroad?
Jobless people.

It's rather unfortunate that a small matter of the perspective from which a picture was taken has become an issue for name-calling and denigration of our Nation and her leader by idle arm-chair critics who out of lack of substance to their endless criticism, resort to the mundane and the ridiculous.
The Hall in which the General Assembly of the United Nations holds is a very massive one and most times, the front row seats are usually vacant. The cameraman simply took a picture from the perspective he could get and some nincompoops come here to write that the President was addressing an empty hall.
PoliticsRe: Abia Governorship Race - Road To 2015 by uzomagic(m): 12:05am On Sep 28, 2012
emindu: THERE comes a time in the history of a people when God blesses them with a leader with a particular mandate. For the people of Abia, aptly called God’s Own State, there is every indication that the supplication of the people unto their Maker for a divine lifting of afflicted yoke caused by long period of political and economic slavery has attracted divine intervention.
The result today is a true reflection of the Biblical saying that when the righteous are on the throne, the people rejoice. For Governor Theodore Orji, under whose administration the state has seen the total paradigm shift in both governance and content of service delivery, the abundance of God’s mercy upon him and the mandate cannot be over-emphasised.
From a fluttering beginning due to known consequence of deceitful political alliance akin to the kind of marriage between the cow and the butcher, governance and service delivery in a democratic setting had a huge question mark. However, with determination and rare courage though not without pockets of adulterated opposition, the Governor was able to rescue the state from the chambers of dark forces. Then came his vow and promise to the people of the state to hold him accountable for all actions and inaction(s) of his administration. With just a year into his second term of office, Governor Orji has left no one in doubt that indeed some dark forces were the cogs on the wheels of the progress of the state.
Within the period under review, the proportion of infrastructural development in the state has witnessed a high commensurate yield which has also left few opposing scoundrels in the state with no other option than to merely haul sand to give the impression that it is fulfilling all righteousness. From the massive infrastructures being put up in the state capital city Umuahia, to the courageous tackling of the infrastructural challenges in Aba the commercial heart beat of the state and the entire East, the present administration has left no one in doubt of its mission.

Just recently, Governor Orji etched his regime’s name in gold when it took care of a perennial problem that had defied solution to previous administrations in the state in the last 20 years. The popular Ukwu-Mango leading into Ariaria which had before now turned into a forest due to its impregnable nature, has today become a beautiful thorough fare for commuters. Hate or like him, the impact of the actualised dream will for a very long time remain evergreen in the minds of the residents of the city. The glory, of course, knows its destination. The residents of Aba have never had it so good.
Under the same period, the Governor had rehabilitated the Ama-Ogbenna, Okigwe road, the Osusu- Omuma Road, which roads were in the year 2000 “politically” commissioned by the then Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. From Osusu, the story moved to Danfodio by East, to Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Old Express by Samek. The government in response to the welfare of students and staff of the Abia State Polytechnic Aba, constructed an over-head bridge to reduce the rate of vehicular accidents in front of the campus.
Coming to the state capital, the story has truly changed. People of Amaeke where burials are held only during dry seasons have heaved a sigh of great relief. The non-existing Amaeke road that could better pass as a slave-trade route has been fully rehabilitated and commissioned. It is even an unbelievable story for people of Ukome and Mbom where Nwa-bekee (local reference to development) has eventually visited. For the years that they had existed, Mbom has never seen a tarred road since creation. Same story is now told in Emede who for many decades have survived through “jump and pass” infrastructural development. Still counting, it is positive turn-around for the World-Bank-Agbama Road, Umuafai-Lodu-Ahiaeke road, Okwuta-Isieke, Okwoyi-Iyienyi as well as the Nkata-Alike Umukabia-Ohuhu road.
In the Southern Senatorial Zone, the century-old adage that there is no short route to Aro (an acronym for Arochukwu) is no longer obtainable. Under Ochendo, the long stretch Arochukwu road from Ndi-Uduma Awoke in OhafiA Local Government is now being constructed.

This is in addition to the Amaekpu-Okagwe road in same Ohafia. It is equally a historic account from Ndi Okorie Abam down to Ndi- Itu. One striking feature in Abia is that the road constructions are carried out by contractors who upon the award of the jobs get instant mobilisation. This is a sharp contrast from the reigning college manual labour roads in some neighbouring states.
As we read this, the state government is very responsive of the need to ensure that all arms of government are functioning optimally, hence the need for human and capacity building. The state workforce is patiently waiting for the completion and commissioning of the State Secretariat with a complete over-haul of the old one. This is just as the two cities of Aba and Umuahia are seeing the eloquent presence of the judiciary made manifest with the dual construction of two gigantic High Court complexes.
The health sector record is a positive statement already made, hence it would be trite to begin fresh enumeration.
It is nothing to the residents of the State that despite all the efforts of the State government, the government is still under the attack and bad press of a few. It is also quite amusing that some whiff of criticism comes from some ignorant sections outside the state. This is essentially from those who felt they should join the fray because there is a bandwagon rush.
Hmmmmm
PoliticsRe: Jonathan Is A Trainee President - ACN by uzomagic(m): 11:14am On Sep 27, 2012
I think it is now fairly obvious that ACN is nothing but A.C.T= Action Congress of Tinubu because no Organisation that has the interest of Nigeria at heart will make this kind of rash, spontaneous and childish statement. Far from being a trainee President, GEJ is a tailor-made President, by God's design and the overwhelming mandate conferred on him by a vast majority of right-thinking Nigerians. GEJ, through his experiences, circumstances of his gradual rise from a very humble background to the Nation's top job is eminently qualified to lead Nigeria on the path of genuine transformation and development.
Firstly, GEJ's Presidency addresses the "JUSTICE" question in Nigeria's Political firmament as it was absurd that the South-South region that had been the mainstay of the Nation's economy for the preceding 50 years before his emergence as President in 2010 had not had a shot at the Nation's Presidency.
In addition, only for the 2nd time in our National life and history, we had the luxury of a graduate as President; the first being the brief tenure of the late President Musa Yar'Adua. GEJ took it yet a step further by being the 1st PhD holder to assume the reins of power.
In his brief spell thus far, the Country has witnessed steady growth with milestones in Power, Education, Infrastructure, and Human Capital Development.
The Country's landscape is dotted with developmental projects and it is highly commendable how well he has done in this brief spell thus far. Clearly, Nigeria and Nigerians are experiencing Fresh Air and we don't want it to end anytime soon. Ride on GEJ,

If somebody is quoted in the press and he still stands by what he said, it cannot be an apology. The so called apology is a carricuture one that was just issued from the lips.
It was just a diplomatic apology meant to prevent unnecessary political bickering between both arms. But we all know the truth. Maku said the truth.

diva_tosin: These senators are just a bunch of clowns. I wonder if David Mark passed secondary school Government at all.
Where on earth did they come about the idea that a resolution of parliament is binding?
It is elementary knowledge that it is only laws passed by the National Assembly that assume a force of law not resolutions.
A resolution is not enforceable. It's breach cannot even give rise to an action in court.
I'm shocked that they have used pressure to extract a cosmetic apology from Maku.
The minister of Information was damn right in his statement.
David Mark went to school...... Military School grin
PoliticsRe: Maku Apologises To Senate Over Statement by uzomagic(m):
For the sake of clarity, I want to reproduce the excerpts of that report to show that Maku is right and stood by his words and just gave a political apology inorder not to cause an executive/legislative rift. Brilliant man.

"The Senate thereafter summoned Maku to appear before it to clarify his statement. The minister, while appearing before the Senate Committee on Information, had said: “I did not in any way intend to disparage or disrespect the authority of the National Assembly by my comment. ``I was just trying to explain to the journalists without having to make a declaration on behalf of the President (Goodluck Jonathan). ``If that comment has been misinterpreted, I tender my apologies to the Senate because personally, I have no reason to disrespect the National Assembly. “I was at a forum and journalists threw a question at me, as to whether the government would cancel the introduction of the N5000 note as a result of the Senate resolution. ``Now, I was pressed by the press and journalists were looking for headlines. The answer was not the position of the federal government and I took efforts to explain to my colleagues.’’

Maku, however, told the Senators that he was not misquoted by the press. On whether the resolutions of the Senate were binding or not, Maku said he was aware that if the nation was at war, the National Assembly had the power to extend the life span of a government."

If you read the bolded critically without bias, you will be convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Maku stands by his statement. He just wants to make it clear that statements credited to him should not be associated with his principal-Jonathan hence the cosmetic apology.
He never said he was sorry for saying what we all know is the truth. He stands courageously by his statement. He said clearly that the press did not misquote him meaning that he said it and stand by it.
But for the sake of Jonathan, if the statement is misinterpreted as executive slight on legislature then I apologise.
PoliticsRe: Maku Is A Careless Talker - David Mark by uzomagic(m): 1:12pm On Sep 26, 2012
David Mark's comments are rash, childish and unworthy of a man of his age, experiences and position as President of Nigeria's foremost legislative house. It is unfortunate that after having spent 13 years as a Senator with five of those years as the Senate helmsman, Bonaventure Mark is yet unaware of the role of the legislature, their limitations and challenges. It is however understandable that the comment is coming from someone whose introduction to governance came on the platform of the despotic military where he held sway for decades, feeding fat on the Nation's resources without any form of checks and balances. From his infamous "telephone is not for the poor" statement as minister of information and communication to his involvement in the even more unpopular annulment of June 12 elections, Mark has shown with this latest rant that democratic tenets are yet to fully sink into his militarised psyche. Maku must be commended for his maturity, humility and genuine democratic credentials in apologising for telling the truth and saying it as it is. I think Mark is the one whose comments are not only childish and out of tune with democratic reality but also very CARELESS

dedeike: Beyond the drama, the town hall meeting was a wonderful platform for interaction between the government and the governed. It brought home the messsage that we are in a democracy where the citizens deserve the right to know how they are governed.

Thanks to the Information Minister, Labaran Maku, Nigerians are beginning to experience new frontiers in the art of information management in a democracy.
Formerly, government used to evolve propaganda and use jingles and branding to force it down our throats via NTA/FRCN. Today, the story has changed.
We don't hear all those good people, great nation mantras again. We are not bombarded with Mamser anthems again. Those propaganda stickers are fading away.

The new minister has evolved several platforms to bridge the communication gap between the people and the Government. I recall that sometime earlier in the year, he organised a ministerial platform session wherein all ministers were called in one by one to give account of their stewardship within one year in office. It equally had members of the public in attendance to ask questions.

The new good governance tour is meant to ascertain the state of govt projects at all levels. It's beautiful that a town hall meeting is attached to it wherein the citizens can come to air their views.
Maku is working. He may turn out to be our best information minister ever

Countryman93: The bad side to the road constructions is increase in rent. The Bwari road from Dutse junction has been completed down to the Nigerian Law school. Many people now rush to such places to escape the big rents in AMAC. it takes lesser time to Acess the city centre from Bwari so it's no big deal stayinng in all those satellite towns located in area councils
Thankfully, the tour has revealed ongoing projects in satellite towns like Kubwa, Bwari and Gwagwalada. When completed, satellite towns will have the same level of infrastructure as the city centre. People won't mind paying more to live in areas with better infrastructure and ease of access to the City Centre via the massive road expansion and construction projects ongoing on most of the roads to the satellite towns.TRANSFORMATION IS REAL!!!
