Don't put your money on that dude, Nairaland can do with anybody including myself, great minds and contributors i met here when i joined have all gone and nairaland still moving on, in as much as nairaland appreciates people who contributes and keep this forum moving but at the same time you can't hold the forum to ransom. There are a lot of good contributors in this thread and when Ballerz was banned the thread did not close down.

Bros e don do. You are a moderator. Please don't go pedestrian. You can't be attacking people like this. You have made your point and it's noted. Let's not derail the thread with this argument.

Meanwhile i also got other peoples details when i was assisting them with conversion from ACCA to CPA and we still chat up until now. I hope this wont earn me a ban too.

We have learnt and will play by the rules going foward. Forgive us our past sins.

Happy New year Czar. Please how far with your CPA conversion? Have you finally been inducted? I decided to do mine while still in Naija and it's not been easy. Sent my cheque for the tax and law course since 4 weeks but no feedback yet from Lillian. Hope you have gotten a better job. This year abundance will multiply in your domot. Keep on keeping on.

Ballerz:

I was not going to respond but I will not let anyone spoil my reputation.

First of all, I think either yourself or Seun Osewa is very unserious. Great Ife people apply better cognitive reasoning to situations. I am shocked!!
So let me clarify, and this is what happens when people fail to apply common sense to the most basic things. Did you expect I ask people to send their Driving Letter and copy of license to a public forum, then I help them to forward to FRSC from there?

I cannot count how many people sent me their letters and copy of license and I helped in the little way I can, to ensure my ex-colleague gets the letter out in good time. Or did anyone complain I collected a fee, rather I used my own resources to appreciate the FRSC team.
I am not the kind of person that sits behind faceless handle and convulse shit. The people I have interacted with here, know me, my real name and where I work. So Mr. Justwise, you need to get your acts together. Thus, the ban is very good. And it is because of this kind of ill-thoughts actions NL is still at the stage where it is, the forum has failed to develop like the country called Nigeria.

PS, Osewa was not paying me, rather on the flip side, the users here spend their time and data to contribute to forum. People visit here to assist others, because Together Everyone Achieves More. It is a T.E.A.M. effort. This is what other countries have mastered. See how Brampton has bn taken over by Indians. Markam and North York by the Chinese. I am yet to see where Nigerians and Africans are taking over.

Please apply for Next Ban.

Justwise and Ballerz please sheath your swords. Ultimately, both your intentions are to help the public. As explained, some information are too private to be posted on a public forum, hence Ballerz request for PM. In this context, please apply the rule as the situation requires. Leaving this country for another land is not easy and people like Ballerz, Maternal, Salford & co. are making selfless efforts to help people. Nairaland and indeed, all members of this thread owe them a huge debt of gratitude. It's painful that rather than being celebrated, they are banned thereby preventing them from assisting folks who need it. This is rather counter productive and not only hurts the purpose of this forum but also demoralizes those who painfully take their time to help others.
Justwise, now that Ballerz has described his intention, please do the needful and make an exception in this thread.
Knowing nairaland, I'm sure anyone who has been scammed or deceived will come forward. Like Ballerz said, it's TEAM effort.

Hello guys,

I see quite a lot of us are going to Cana in order to get white colar jobs.

Hardly anyone here talking about being a skilled professional in one niche or another.

Nobody talking about opening a salon, a workshop, a fashion house to sew aso ebis which I'm sure many of us will still want to rock at events, tech outlet, e.t.c.

Is it that we all want to be employees, or is it more expensive to own your own business?

Can we look at this angle and see if there are hot skills some of us can learn while awaiting ITA and PPR?

Welding, plumbing, barbing, sewing, hair dressing, gardening, wood work?

Aren't these good viable options?

Your thinking is so on point.

I do plan to open shop over there and sell items inported from China.

I have read a bit about their importation rules and hopefully it won't be too difficult to import non-regulated stuff as long as the quality is certified.

With Amazon and the likes available, I'm hoping success will be swift.

That said, it's unlikely I will leave Naija based on the aspirations of a side business. As Nigerians we need to start thinking of side hustle.

Seniors Maternal and Salford please what is the perception about people who do side business in addition to their employment. Is it something that is ethically or culturally frowned at? Also what is the ease of doing business especially with respect to import from China?

I started my career in HR, but when I got to Canada I realised there is more opportunity in Accounting. So after I did my research I registered at a community college here in Winnipeg for a Diploma in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. By the grace of God i only have 4 months to complete it. Then i continue with my CPA Prep courses.

I'm writing this epistle because I have something I want to share for people who are interested in accounting. Seneca College Toronto have a one-year graduate certificate that covers all the CPA Prep requirements, whereas after my 2 years course I will still have to write 6 Prep courses. In essence, after one year you can move to PEP.
Here is the link to the course: http://www.senecacollege.ca/programs/fulltime/PRA.html

They also have a professional accountancy course that covers the first stage of the PEP; Core 1 and 2 and Elective 1 and 2, so you can start from capstone. http://www.senecacollege.ca/programs/fulltime/ACY.html.

I hope I have been able to help someone.

Hi honey86, you have been helpful.

Can a person without accounting experience start afresh at this Seneca college? After the 1 year stint, what is the typical timeline to completion of CPA?
Accounting jobs have been associated mostly with Toronto, I'm glad there are also opportunities in Winnipeg. Could you describe it in a bit more detail? Thanks

The way to make it easier for yourself is to make sure you dont drive. join the train/bus. The public transport system is so good that you dont need to drive.

So what's it like living in Mississisauga (hope I got that right)? Daily costs, rent and all? Someone made the assertion earlier that Canada being a big country, it's better to drive most of the time. Seems you see this differently. Why?

you didnt get me. I am not interested in one praising or not praising God. I am only saying the part where you said you are a christain and went on to make it seem as though the fault wasnt religion, colours the truth or isnt a true reflection of the underlying cause. Point is what christains do by jumping on a thread with praise God is very valid by the tenets of christainity, yes even not taking into consideration the beliefs of others when it means curtailing ones testimonies. hence why i said the truth is that one can not actually draw a line between religion and reason. we may try to be moderate or rational christains as i have learnt to do by shunning the chants of "na God do am" and focus on cause and effect.... but one cant not correct the acts of so-called radicals within the confines of christainity. This is because you would either find clear biblical grounds for most of their actions or ambiguities that seem to offer tacit support to irrationality and some sort of intolerance. anything else is patching the truth.

so in summary, the fault is not theirs/ours but the wiring that the religion gives who it terms a true believer. of course, it is much more diplomatic to say "christains be tolerant" than "christains be less christain". lol..

hope u catch my drift now?

einsteino pls forgive my over Sabi. Within the context of a larger society, is it really fair to be guided only by the 'Confines of Christianity'? If every radical or extremist acts based only on the confines of their convictions, that is formula for chaos. Perhaps, society should be secular in it's interactions but guided by the private religious convictions of its members. There must be a framework where people of all beliefs can interact without rudely throwing their beliefs in each other's faces. This is why we never discuss religious topics. It never ends. Ok bye.

@einsteino I appreciate and understand your point of view. I never said don't give thanks to your God. What I said was that religious tolerance takes into consideration the beliefs as well as the desires of whomever you are conversing with.

To put it simply. How comfortable would followers of this thread be if people who practice african traditional religion, start their posts with a paragraph of incantation to Sango or Oronmila each time they want to make a comment or share their experience?
To each his own. Let me not derail the thread any longer.

Winter pics from Calgary today.

True, vcole. I would like to point out something. It is indeed a person's right to shout about his religion to high heavens. He has a guaranteed freedom of speech and right to free association.

Yet, in the company of others, one must show emotional intelligence and maturity in exercising those rights. This is typically not the case in Nigeria where people feel the need to discomfort others with their religious activity in the name of evangelism/worship. This is a key difference between Canadian experience and a typical Nigerian experience.

I am able to relate because I worked at a top4 accounting firm in Lagos. Over there it was forbidden to discuss religion at the work place (in my time). Not because we were atheists, but because these were topics that were sensitive and could cause intolerance at the work place. This is way different from what is obtainable at most Nigerian work places.

So it's important to exercise your right or free speech with responsibility especially in the context of your environment. I felt the need to make this point because it may be helpful to some people beyond this thread.

@vcole, in the history of this thread, several issues have derailed us. I feel this is both fortunate and unfortunate. While some salient issues are raised and discussed, I feel the ability to partake in open, cordial discourse of divergent views is one everyone must learn especially as we look forward to moving to Canada. It is important to engage in these discussions without being rude. In our country, we are very aggressive. I'm afraid those who hold on to these aggressive tendencies may need more than bridging programmes to fit into the Canadian environment.

Hi guys, just to add to what others have said about religion. First of all, I’m a Christian. Not a church goer but a deep believer of Jesus. In Canada as well as other westernized countries, religion is not the way it is in Nigeria where everything is God God God! You have to be careful not to shove your religion(whatever it is) in people’s faces here. Of course you can talk about your religious organizations and let people know your beliefs if such discussion takes place but it’s not like Nigeria where you can say anything to anyone about your religion and its not offensive. My landlord/landlady are serious Christians as well and the first day we met, they brought up discussions about a nearby church and the society in a way to start small talk all to get to know our religion without being offensive! They never asked directly ‘what’s your religion?’ This is a country where it’s even illegal for an employer to ask if you’re married or ask of your age before or during recruitment process. This doesn’t in anyway mean you cannot express your faith and be thankful to God for things in your life. Infact, my experiences so far in Canada have been nothing short of a miracle. Details coming soon.

Well said. Waiting for your miracle story.

Let me kuku share my testimony even though it is incomplete. without God i am nothing so i can't but give Him all the honour.

I intend to write a book on my life experiences to encourage those who may have gone through rough and tough situations in life.

I will start from where it concerns this house as my testimony cant be shared in a day.

Before i came here i did series of prayers and a lot of prophesies were released concerning my relocation which included that i was going to get a very good job. When i got here i was applying hoping to get the good job but nothing was forth coming. Someone here introduced me to one of these part time jobs but because of my conviction that i was going to get a good job, i didnt consider it. My landlady tried to convince me to pick up any job while i wait for my "good job" but i would hear none of such suggestion. so tey we go church the guest minister used Joseph's story to reset my brain. She narrated how Joseph was told in the dream that he would be great but he didnt see it happen until he went as far as being a prisoner.

The next day being monday i called the agency that i wanted the job and started on a Tuesday. My people i never experience the kain pain wey i experience doing that job. You know coming from a background of armchair banking to that kain job by the second day i broke down. That night i cried like i have never and asked God a lot of questions. i just poured out my heart to God.

The next day naso i dress go work, As i got to where i normally catch my last bus to work, instead of waiting inside the hall until the time for me to resume at work was near as i have been doing since the last 2 days something just prompted me to go and enter the next bus and wait in the office. As i stepped out of the meadowville town centre i noticed one young filipino boy sitting in their bus shed smiling at me naso i smile back. Immediately he walked up to me and asked me if i mind his talking to me, i told him i dont mind. The next thing he said was God said i should tell you that He loves you. I turned to him and asked him if this is how evangelism is done in this country. He replied that he was not evangelizing. That he was to catch an earlier bus but the Holy Spirit said he should wait and that He is sending a lady to him whom He will give him a word for. At that point i remembered my prayers the night before and started crying. The boy was embarrassed and was like is everything okay with you? Do you need money? are you sick? Do you need prayers? I now told him how back home series of prophesies were released about what God was going to do for me and how i started one kain job 3 days ago. After narrating my experience, he prayed for me and as he was praying, he repeated the same prophesies i got back home. We eventually entered the same bus and dropped off at the same place because we found out that his office is behind my office. He got to know where i work and i found out that his brother is my supervisor. Naso later on, the man(my supervisor) wey dey hound me on my first day at work for being slow was apologising for not putting us through on the job before posting us.

one of his brothers working with me came to confirm my name some days later. During one of our break i had to ask why he asked for my name. he said his brother narrated his experience at meadowville town centre to him and that God has never spoken to him so clearly like that before. he sha said they intend to go back to their country to set up a mission field.

This experience gave me confidence that God knows about my situation and that He will do it in His time. Infact after that thing happened, if i work small i go just smile and say to myself "God loves me". As i am typing this i have even been relieved of the job as our contract ended on Friday. See as the thing pain me like say person die. It took my landlady encouraging me to reset my brain. Job wey i no wan pick before.

what prompted me to share this is the guy that said that everyone is rooting for my success and i replied that God's name is at stake on top my matter self.

Just be rest assured that He did not bring us this far to abandon us. He will settle us in His time not ours. And not the same time with others.

abeg no mind my grammar. i no go grammar school.

Hang in there. Keep ur chin up. Feel free to share the kind of job u are looking for and a summary of ur background. Some people here may be able to help with contacts that can get ur foot in the door.

@maternal, giving God the deserved thanks and honor in seeing us through good and difficult times is not a naija thing but a personal thing. I just hope people don't get to Canada where things seem to work and feel no need to reverence God again. Without Him, we are nothing both in Naija or Canada or anywhere else in the world. This is just my thought. Cheers!!

Please understand Maternal. He's not saying you should not give God glory but in naija when someone works hard and prepares well, it should be properly acknowledged. The reason is simple. When you say "na God", a lazy person will sit on their arse and expect magic. Heavens only helps those who help themselves. So please while we reverence God, the Alpha and Omega, also hint at the hard work, discipline, perseverance and all required for success. Indeed, chance God favors the prepared mind.

Wow...that's a lot of reading up to catch up with the thread. Its been like I went into a coma and just got out grin. Well its not easy settling into life in Edmonton with a spouse and two kids all younger than three. To live up to the purpose of this thread, I will share our experiences so far. This is so as to give those still planning to make the jump a fair sense of what to expect once they land here so they can make more informed decisions.

So we landed on Oct 7th and spent the first one month with our hosts in their town home. This may not be the most comfortable arrangement but i decided to tow this path because I had no experience whatsoever living outside Nigeria. Neither does my spouse. So I needed to understudy people a bit so as to avoid making costly blunders and it did work well for us. Before we left for our own apartment, we got to complete all my post arrival activities like SIN, Alberta health etc under the tutelage of our well experienced host. We got to start learning the Bus and train transit system so we could go out by ourselves without getting lost. We also made good use of our hosts' home wifi to search for apartments and apply for jobs. We also got to learn some of their routines and home management techniques which we have imbibed or plan to in their near future.

We moved out to our own apartment exactly a month after landing. We got a good deal because we had ample time to search for an apartment. We took a 2 bedroom that has free internet and cable TV, one free energized parking, free heat and water for $853/month. Our place is also very close to the Train station and Bus terminal so I always plan my trips from there. Moving in was stressful because of the luggages and kids so i hired uber cabs for it.

Job Search- Now this is where every aspiring canadian have fears. So here is how its been for us so far. I started applying for a job as soon as a got COPR (No time grin). Got my first interview call a week after landing and I was excited. The excitement was in the end short-lived by the time I went for the interview. I had not mastered the transit system well at the time so I arrive 19mins later than I was scheduled. The security guy refused to allow me in because I was late. After that I wasn't getting any response for all the other applications I was sending. I wondered why I was busy shooting blanks. I thought maybe I wasnt doing something right. So, we decided to join a couple of newcomer services notably- WCI (welcome centre for Immigrants) and ERIEC. We attended a couple of informational sessions with them and utilized their career services like resume building and preparation for interviews. I am a brewer by profession in Nigeria while my wife has only her cloth-making business she operated but we both had to adapt our resumes to suit the canadian work environment. I see a lot of people asking for one guy's resume but it wont do you any good copy-pasting someone's resume. What will make your resume sell well is if you write it yourself because only you know your story. Just avail yourself to these free employment services and you will be fine.
So after we had tweaked our resumes we started getting calls for interviews. I got one immediately from a microbrewery in Edmonton and I had a drilling panel interview with them afterwards. They gave me a couple of paid trial shifts and later asked me to await a final decision on my job offer. In the same time I got called for another interview with the biggest brewer in Canada but for a temporary position (to last for 9 months) which I honored. That happened to be the easiest interview in my life...they just wanted to know what made me apply for such a job I was way more qualified for an I told them I wanted the opportunity to join their team.
A week later I was given both job offers and after careful consultations and considerations I picked the big brewery over the microbrewery. By Gods grace after clearing the background check I will be starting work on 2nd January. We are still expecting something for wifey but for now she engages with part time employment from a local employment agency.

So there you have it. There are jobs in Canada but its not offered on a platter for anybody. You must be ready to convince potential employers that it is you that they need to hire. First way is to attract them with an eye-catching resume laden with your skills and achievements in the past. Blow your trumpet well but be honest. Do not claim what you do not have. Be adventurous and apply different strategies to your job search( the microbrewery offer I got were not even hiring, I merely sent an unsolicited application to them and I got an interview). Then above all believe/trust in God who made it even possible for you to be a legal resident of Canada. He wont lead you here only to leave you hanging without work. Despite that he wont come and do for you what you have to do for yourself. So work hard and pray hard and the sky will be our starting point in Canada.

It will surely end in praise for all of us!

Very good. First of all congrats freeradical. I also think u made a great decision by going for bigger company. Hopefully bigger things will come after 9 months. Please a few questions- is it a regulated profession? If yes, how did u deal with that? What about the Canadian experience thingy? How did u navigate around that? Or didnt they ask?

@follyzee

I don't think you need to upgrade. They are not particular about your degree or courses. They just want to be sure you have an equivalent of University degree from an acceptable university and I believe all WES reports show that.
But you can engage them to be sure before you take any action so you don't spend money unnecessarily.
Cheers

Hi Vascey/ anyone who can help

Pls I need to find out if WES /ICAS report used immigration is Ok to present to CPA (during the process of converting ACCA to CPA) or one needs an upgraded one

IF yes, which assessment will one upgrade to?

Thanks

Yes you can. You need to send them an email to find out if they will take the soft copy or whether you need to ask WES to deliver a copy to them (at a cost).
I went through the transcript/school confirmation method and I am still on it. Unfortunately I have been caught by this current NASU strike so the process is basically on pause.
Thankfully my WES report just came out but I am concerned about sending them a copy of WES report. I am wondering if CPA BC would halt my conversion when they realise I am doing it for immigration purposes.
If the NASU strike is not called off soon, I may have no alternative other than to use my WES report.
Good luck.

We have since made up our minds that its Ontario to land as we are both into finance. However, staying in GTA is out of our options as well. I am yet to here about STRATFORD and KITCHENER AND WATERLOO here. Can someone kindly enlighten the peculiarities of this places. Preference is cheap housing(an opportunity to buy in near future) and securing finance jobs with good proximity, low cost of living.

2. Is it worth pursuing the CPA qualification, or it is your skill that really matter. Considering it is a huge investment but an easy one for me, does it add that much value or there are other things worthy of such investment. i intend to get an assistant controller job.

Hi Garykasparov, not heard from you in a while. How did u settle? Did you eventually go for CPA as BlackBuddy advised or you went the marketing angle. How has it been getting a job? Did you eventually settle at Kitchener or Waterloo?

I have sent their automated enquiry mail but no response. I have also tried to speak with the registrar's office only to drop voicemail for them. I may be there physically tomorrow if time permits me.

My dear this land is to each his own. You can't use another person's story to know what lies in wait for you. I have learnt that not just because everybody has different story to tell but because MY CASE IS DIFFERENT. You will understand in fullness of time. Meanwhile you can never be hungry here. There are always jobs to pay the bills and worse case scenario you become government pickin wey dem go dey pay allowance (not advisable though).

Then the accounting and finance jobs are more in Ontario (Toronto to be precise). But i hear rent high for dat side na im make i go live for nearby to dey commute.

Resume writing is a big deal here because of the keywords the scanning machines look out for in a resume. You need to get your resume right to be called for interviews.

The bigger deal is Canadian experience which they won't tell you. This doesn't matter for IT people. They believe IT is same everywhere. The same way you do network security in Nigeria is the same way it is done in Canada. Infact this is so true because some of my sister's colleagues got their job before moving while the rest got theirs immediately they got here.

As an accountant you need to know your excel very well. Vlookup and pivot table are very important to them. Then QuickBooks is very popular here too. If you have worked in an organisation that use ERPs like Oracle and SAP(?) Then you are hotcake. I have not seen where the job ad has finacle or flexcube experience requirement(Bankers).

The above is just a general observation. There are exceptions to the rules.

I have to stop here for now. Like i said no two people have the same story. Ontario is yours to discover (its written on their plate numbers).

Thank you dear. I am sorry I initially interpreted your name as Caesar at Work, hence the assumption you are a Bros. ITK Gone Wrong! Forgot it could also be Chizaram...
Anyway, wishing you all the best. Someone mentioned that CPA Ontario was more receptive and had less delays. I will look for the post and dig it out for you. Kindly share the links for resume writing if you have any.

I know it's not easy but know that we are all rooting for you, all of nairaland, all of Nigeria are supporting and praying for your success. Always remember that. All the best.

This is to remind us of ACCA members networking in Toronto tomorrow from 5pm to 7pm.

ACCA sent out the invite for this event. Hoping to seel you people there tomorrow with your resumes.

My brother how has it been? Have you concluded your ACCA to CGA? what are the opportunities. I've come to realise that Canada has over 260k CPAs, a high number for such a small population. Yet it's also a finance hub. How has it been for you?

Migration is not for everybody. If there's no interest in it, one should not be on this thread. Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant is the topic(and not a question) of the thread. Please let's get to read more experiences from our landed brothers and sisters out there to the benefit of those planning to land or even the newly landed. This is a life changing thread and not a gamble, families are involved.

On the flip side, I have been preparing myself for the new life studying for relevant professional qualifications, working with a CANPREP mentor to be job ready in canny and processing admissions for studies to acquire a canny qualification, in my opinion, will help me integrate and adapt to their academic standards. My spouse is also preparing so we can be of benefit to each other and make life easier. We have plans to do a survival job as well as volunteer during the waiting period for the dream job. We have an idea about the neighborhood we will be looking for accommodation, an idea about school for the kids, shopping and other social amenities.

We also do online research every other day and sometimes make phones calls to people to get real answers. I read and learn from this thread regularly. I sieve out what is important to us and add to the heap of information already in our kitty. Shouldn't people be doing same in here? My thoughts.

Now with all the above, we feel very confident about the future, what about you?

My brother this is the same thing I have been saying. Abi them send them ni.
Meanwhile, How are you doing canprep mentoring from here. can you share the link? Is it also possible to partake in those bridging programs while awaiting PR?

I think you are doing great. This is surely the way to go. While I have been working on aligning my current professional qualification with theirs, I am yet to enroll in any school for additional courses. I have also been looking up job openings I am interested in. This will help me tailor my resume properly.

Nice one

A PRAYER FOR MYSELF, MY FAMILY AND ALL WHO DESIRE SAME

For the remaining time that we will be in here (to collect our CoPRs), for our friends & families that we will leave behind, for the times we will come back for holidays and vacation, may this Nigerian system never consume us, our friends & families. IJN, AMEN!

It will surely end in praise IJN!

So suddenly we are actually comparing the structures and opportunities in Canada to that in Nigeria, a third world vs developed nation. What exactly is the aim of this? Is it for people not to emigrate or we are just feeling patriotic and feel the need to describe our country with beautiful words. Whichever the case, I don't think this is the place.

This thread is an avenue for people who have landed to share their experience to the benefit of those who are still in the process. We seem to have deviated a bit.

Pls we all love our country Nigeria, but even love and patrotism cannot turn white to black. If you believe in your heart that Naija offers better opportunities than Canada, then please, stay back. Don't come here trying to distract us from the purpose of this thread.
