If what you said about Munich is true it means that cities differs. I live in Tübingen and Tübingen is a university town where two out of every three persons you see in the streets of Tübingen are students that is to tell you that almost every student here understands English. But, life could be hell here without German. Sometimes some of them would not want to speak English with you even though they understood what you are saying perfectly. The train, bus signs and everything here are all in German they are not translated in English. All the letters I've received from the school, insurance company, bank, employers, studierendenwerk etc are in German. When I say German I mean 100% German. The commands in the computer systems provided by the school are all programmed in German this includes the printers, photocopy machines etc. Infact, from the beginning of the city to the end you can never find any sign in English.

cahnellven:
I live in Munich and I dare say German is only important for economic reasons (like getting a job)
I've not met a munchner that can't speak English, and their English is pretty good too.
At the foreigners office, you'll be asked if you speak English or German. Almost all, the docs here can speak English . Train signs and announcements are translated into English.

Maybe my experience, but as Williamso rightly pointed out, it depends on the city

Learning the language is important, but life can still be relatively easy without it in the big cities

Thank you so much @crowns; You've just nailed it. You said it exactly the way it is even at that some people would still want to argue.

crowns2:
Many times I want to come here to say this but i don't know how people will react. From my experience in Germany I would say please don't get on that flight to Germany if you do not know how to speak or read German. In the past people just post and say: Learn the language without giving concrete and convincing reasons why. Let me explain like this:

From the airport you need to get to where you will be staying. You go to information desk to ask how to get to your destination. The people you may meet there hardly understand your question. You get on the train, tram or bus the announcements at the station, digital screen for bus stops are in German. There was i time i was alone on the track because everyone left the place and i didn't know the trip had being cancelled and the announcement over the air was in German. Some Naija people I know have been left alone in trains because everyone disembarked and they didn't understand the announcement. The train hasn't come at the time it should, you need to ask people around is it still gonna come? Sorry no one understands what you are saying.
You need to unblock your account. The bankers don't understand you. They will help you scout for an English speaker. The poor English speaker tries his best to understand you. He is limited in explaining to you. He pauses many times to try to think how he will convey his message to you. He will say i erm erm..sorry I don't know the English word for it. Then comes your letters. 100% all written in German. This are important letters. With some times urgent information. Someone got a letter from the doctor to take some drugs and to go for a life saving procedure. Everything in the letter was in German. Google translator very limited. Ended up in Emmergency room. Doctors says in his poor and limited English why didn't you do what we wrote? Patient says NO I couldn't understand it. The nurse and hospital were supposed to explain but couldn't because they don't know how to pass the message to you. They can't speak English.
You want to ask a passerby, please how do I get to so and so place? Do I turn left or am I to go right. People keep passing no understands you. Germans are unbelievably nice they always ALWAYS want to help or assist you. But you limit them because they don't understand what you are saying. Believe me the last place you should get lost is in Germany before you will find your way eh! God help you.
The emphasis has always being on learning the language to get Jobs. I am not talking about that. I am talking daily everyday life. At my Auslander office NO ONE speaks English to you. You must go with a translator or speak the Language. You know they are the key to your stay here.
You need to call some offices to get vital info or to make an appointment, the reciever cannot understand you. You then decide to visit the office, the receptionist doesnt understand you. They help you look for a colleague of theirs who could understand. Then you ask please can you speak English, the person says a little bit. Explanation begins, you get limited in explaining, the person gets limited in understanding because they cannot understand you fully.
When I first came here I used to shop, get to the cashier, they tell me the amount and I drop all the money in the wallet on the table grin. They select their own and give me the rest. Thank God they are honest. Sometimes I think ah! this must be food, you buy it and its NOT undecided
The person next to you wants to discuss with you, and they are smiling at you to gist with you but you cant understand lipsrsealed and sadly you tell them: Ich spreche kein Deutch Bitte. undecided
This is the little I can explain but please please and please again do not come here without learning the Language please. You may ask me why I didn't. 3 reasons: I was occupied with work but I should have taken a Leave to learn for atleast a month. secondly I never envisaged it was gonna be spoken by everyone everywhere here and all the time, every blessed day. Thirdly I have a compulsory course in my school for Deutsch Language from A1 to the end for a full year. Then I thought no need . I am learning but it takes time. You cant start speaking immediately. Many schools do ont have this offer. And then you have to pay for it. I tell you it is expensive. The 36k charged in Goethe is worth it.
And please don't come here to tell me its because of where you live because I have been in 3 of the 16 states of Germany and its the same experience.
Okay sorry I am typing in a hurry. Lastly avoid with all your might Nigerian non students especially assylum seekers. They are like the devil to steal and to destroy

It's not that people here do not understand English. There are things you will like to do here that language barer will prevent you from doing it. E.g student jobs, Employers here insist that you must be able to speak the language for you to be employed. The commands in the school computers are all programmed in German, All the letters that I have received so far from the School, Studieredewerk, Employers and Banks are all written in German language. For how long will one keep looking for someone who can help in translating it?

Williamso:
This couldn't be further from the truth. While the language is very important, I have hardly met anybody who could speak English that deliberately refused to, even people with very poor English were almost always willing to try. I think this depends largely on the city you are. That said, du solltest Deutsch lernen...

If it's a PhD you desire, Yes! a Masters from a UAS can secure that. Make no mistake, your chances of getting into Max Planck will be very slim, but take solace in the fact that it may not be any better if you went through a traditional university. That said, the major difference between both degrees (as has been said a million times) is the practical orientation of the UAS, which has its cons (and pros).

The book you are talking about I don't know if it is the same book that is sold here in Germany for 25Euros. The language book used here is different from the one they sell at Goethe Institute in Nigeria. Anyone coming to Germany who still have the time to learn the language should please do so. Life can be difficult here without the language, I have missed a lot of good opportunities here because of language barer. Germans are so proud of their language that they would never want to speak English to you despite the fact that English is their second language. The only means of communication here is German. Sometimes I began to wonder why they are teaching some courses in English when it seemed as if they don't what to promote any other language apart from their own.

This shows that you have not been following this thread and reading through the write ups otherwise, you would have known how to find the Alien Authority/Foreigners office in the administrative region where your school is located. You would have also known the right insurance company where you can obtain your travel/health insurance at an affordable rate if you have been following this thread.

IMMIGRATION OFFICE/FOREIGNERS AUTHORITY IN GOTTINGEN:-

http://www.auslaenderaemter.de/info/info_foreigners_authority_in_goettingen.php

You can get your travel/health insurance at Leadway Assurance, IGI, AICCO etc. But i will recommend Leadway becouse it's cheaper.

Now contact the Alien Authority as quickly as possible, Send an email if they don't respond on time back it up will calls their email address and phone numbers are in the above link.

Wishing you the very best.

When i was saying that things are not really cheap in Germany apart of from certain food items it looked as if i was only talking to myself. Am glad that someone else is now confirming it. Though, the reason why it looked as if things are too expensive here is because we have not started earning Euro. The money we are spending so far is the the Euro equivalent of the Naira we converted.

Na only God wey bring us come here go help us all.

My living in this country wouldn't have been complete without having you here Emmanuel. God is truly with us as your name suggests. Thanks be to the almighty God for making it happen. Infact, it happened in his own time. Most people give up just when they’re about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown. But you persevered to the very end. Your story should be a source of inspiration to those who give up easily as a result of the hopeless situation they find themselves in. Can't wait to have you here brother.

Eke40seven:
LOL..Make una no vex, my silenece was as a result of a couple of things beyond my control. One of the fact being that, for the very first time, I didn't really know what to scribble down and how or names to leave out.
On Monday, I took the print out proof of AOK insurance and international passport, as I went to hand over an insurance documents to a very dear friend for her own collection. By faith, I said by force by fire, as I'm going to the embassy, I wasn't just gonna become a channel again, the time for me to go is now! I had everything that morning for collection, but for the print out of the a.m matter mail from the embassy. It was past 9 but I was going no where until I get it I said to myself, I called my alien office and the response was positive. Lo and behold! Just like in a dream, an hour later the mail dropped like hot pap. Right inside the car park beside the embassy, where I was humming to Big Sean's song "Blessings"..."I'm way up, I feel blessed,...I'm way up, I feel blessed...." then the people around me wondered why my voice changed from a Michael Jacksin's falsetto to a Barry White's baritone but they won't understand that ended is a 2 year struggle, a moment that will turn around the fortunes of the bad crooner standing before them.
The journey was arduous, filled with streaks of disappointment from both family and friends (those times were the very lows) but in all victory was assured. Giving up was never an option, I didn't have time to complain, calmness and a strong faith was all I had. However, this wouldn't be possible without all your prayers here. For long I had a virtual family that sometimes translated to a physical one. Mentioning names is the hard part, but at decisive moments in the journey, Apart from family some people had done beyond encouraging words and prayers in their intervention. Swtxt, crowns, Vivian, grin, (who remembered her?) Seunstein and his friend, kennyoguns009, Phucado, oga Goldhorse, Dolpaz, panzi (brother and ghost follower), Obiwannn -one of my DB heroes, My Naija German people, (you guys are the best). For many who will call, send messages, do their prayers in their secret places, I more than appreciate your efforts. We have been so close I don't even remember your monikers.
Guys still awaiting their mails, please, never give up, I started the big dream with less than 100k in my account, a phone & PC for research purposes and a will of steel. Family said no for so long, it was hard but I journeyed despite that to embrace my destiny even after one failure, quitting was not an option. If I can do it, then you can absolutely do it.
For the newbies, I will DEFINITELY, be here whenever the need arises just as always. This time around, with more experience.
I can finally say to myself, "Eke40seven, Congratulations!.... Go to Deutschland and SUCCEED!".

Emirate is cool, their hospitality is 2nd to non. Two and half hours stoppage in Dubai. NGN129K as at a week ago. You can also book Lufthansa, KLM, Airfrance etc if you have the funds. Wakanow prices are not that bad infact it's cheaper than going to the airline directly for flight bookings.

Infact, am typing from my laptop with a borrowed charger from a Polish neighbour who will be collecting back her connecting cables in few minutes time. Please, anyone coming here should remember to buy things like Android phone, European socket and plug. Change the three pin plugs for your electronic devise to two pin (European type) Buy your shoes, Jeans, snickers, winter wears in Nigeria before coming it's cheaper in Nigeria the only cheap thing in this country is chicken and chips. Do not forget to put into consideration that the money you will be spending during your few weeks of arrival is Naira equivalent of the Euro you converted.

Wrong decision. Who advised you to resign from your place of work when you are not yet sure of visa? I waited until visa was granted went to pick it up. Went back again to check my passport containing my visa where I kept it the following day to make sure I wasn't having a goddamn pipe dream before I submitted my resignation letter.

Some people here did not even resigned immediately after picking up their visas. They waited until flight ticket and PTA money are complete before they resigned from their place of work.

Well, there is nothing that God cannot do. He will surely make a way for you. We'll continue to remember you in prayers.

Avoid speaking with the security guys at the gate. If they ask u where u are going tell them that u are going to the reception to make enquiries. Don't let them know what u want cos they might look for another Bolaji to link you up with so they can collect their shares latter.

Or you can PM me let me give you the contact of the lady in charge so as to avoid walking into the arms of the imposter Bolaji or another one chance fraud star.

The mistake you made was that u would have walked straight to the reception and Chinenye the receptionist will attend u. Travel/Health insurance at Leadway Assurance head quarters close to Costain Bus/stop is Twelve thousand and forty Naira (N12,040). The so called Bolaji could have been an imposter. Maybe she was trying to do a fast one on u. Typical Naija style... That is the reason why Nigeria is not progressing. They use any available means to defraud their victims.

Was at Leadway Assurance (festac branch) today. hmm hmm, when I told them wat I came for, it appeared they new nothing abt it. The guy I met had to put a call tru before he could talk to me abt it. I got fed-up with their unprofessional approach and left.

I headed to their other address I saw here on nairaland - the one around Costain. It is quite big. Met a lady called Bolaji (she said shes the head of Travel Health Insurance). I got the shocker of the day wen she told me the 3 months Insurance will cost me 18,000 NAIRA! which is contrary to the information I found a few pages back on this thread. I know nothing about that fellows experience and I am not disputing him in anyway. I only know about my own ordeal.

Finally I went to IGI at Broad Str., got there around 3:56 pm and that was where I got my confidence back. It cost 14,500 Naira. Thank God say e no far from Costain odawise my day for be waste.

What makes you think that IGI's insurance cover is much more than that of Leadway? You ought to have examined critically and compared the insurance cover of both Insurance companies and also the track record of how effective they have been able to manage/handle insurance cover/claims of their clients.
Oye50:
Simply put Leadway is cheaper but u can't conclude it's beta than IGI, the purpose of insurance is not the certificate but in the insurance cover. In as much as, IGI gave me a colored copy, I'm sure the cover on the certificate meets the requirements of the embassy just as much as Leadway or any other.

Today I thank God almighty for all the blessings he has bestowed upon members of this great thread and ask him to continue to grant us our heart desires and meet our needs. When I was about to start this journey, few people that knew about it tried to discourage me. My nature is that I don't listen to discouragement. I'm very determined, and I believe so much in what God can do.

I want to also use this opportunity to thank my brother from another mother Eke40seven. This brother has been there for me from day one to this day without charging me a dime. And to Futurwise11, Zeeblamjo1, Warbay1313 and everyone.......... I say thank you.

I had my interview on the 10th of August, funded the same day, received credit entry confirmation from Deutsche Bank 3days latter. The day before yesterday, I received the much awaited mail from the Embassy to come and pick up my visa. Yesterday afternoon I was among the 19 students that collected their visas at the German Consulate.

To those who are yet to fund as a result of one problem or the other. It is easy to lose hope when your troubles
surround you. Uncertainty and doubt can fill you with fear especially when it looked as if there seems to be no way out of your pain. Continue to trust God for a miracle he never disappoints.

To #Teamsummerwinter2016 your testimonies shall be greater.

Have no fear since you are currently not in Germany International students interviews are normally conducted via SKYPE or Phone. That is the way University of Tubingen operate too. They conducted interview for me before they gave me admission. That was the reason why everyone here has been advising you to start reading from page one but, you deliberately refused to adhere to the advise given to you.

If you have been reading from page one you will come across one of my posts where I talked about the interview that University of Tubingen conducted for me.

To think that the first time I came across this thread, I wasn't just clueless, I was confused too. I didn't even know what IELTS meant (Eke can attest to this)...
From IELTS, to getting transcripts, to Certification, to Applications, to admission, to blocked account opening, to interview, to funding, to mailing( or should I say spamming) the foreigners office and the embassy to this long awaited email, God just used Eke to guide me. The wait wasn't easy and now I understand what people mean when they say "long awaited email" but finally, I got the mail.
Special thanks first to God.Thanks to everyone who made this dream a reality -Eke thank you isn't even enough, Oligee that I met during my interview who helped me with the names of all the German states just minutes to my own turn, Kennyogun,Twinkle, my ehusband Obiwann, countless people I sent pm's to who replied with their church mind. You guys are all wonderful.
To those that are waiting, I know the waiting isn't fun -I was putting on those shoes till this morning smiley Just keep calm, you'll soon testify.
Now na flight things
