I also did Industrial and Analytical Chemistry for 1 n 2nd degree. I have less than a year experience in QC and I have passion for it!

With my passion for QC, I did a certification in Data science.

So far, I have found the application of DS in understanding of Six Sigma for process control; chemoformatics for method development/validation/manipulation, etc.

Pls I will like to get my self with data science/ analysis. How do I kick start in this tech skill, I have taken some free online courses on it but I really want an in-depth knowledge and where I can be finely groom and been monitored. I came across an organization who’s charging the sum of 1.5 million naira for it,, thou there are alot of benefits attached to it like housing, feeding, a personal laptop, monthly stipends among others for a period of 9months. It’s like a camping stuff nd the 1.5m will be paid in 30months.

My Experience With my boss at the office today.

Am a serving corps member with one company serving.

At first, I usually carry my boss bag from the office to his car whenever we close (in the evening) but in a recent time he promoted my kind gesture to always call me from the office to pick his bag in the morning not minding whether am busy or not which has being getting me infuriated before now, but I keeps being calm.

The last stroke that broke the camel's back happened today. He called me outside as usual, I picked up the bag from him and he equally went further to tell his friend to equally handed over his own to me, to bring them all to the office although the friend told me not to bother myself, which really got me really mad boldly written in my countenance � and he noticed it which he asked me at the office and I express my displeasure to him in that regard of carrying his friend bag together with his own and he attempted to defend himself by bringing in irrelevant ideas and admonishment, of which I took flimsy excuse that I was not feeling fine and left, but trust me it was still as a result of the anger.

Now, my concerns is that, am I being foolish trying to be nice and at the same time being humble to always doing that for him willingly because I started it which he took it to be daily routine,? And again I want to stop doing that to him from today's on even when am called upon, if he thinks I do them all for him as a result of ignorance or that am being naive( what do you think � that my plan may result to) .
Am talking about a guy who should be in his early thirties( 30) here.

This is equally what I faced during my service year. I had to flare up and matter escalated seriously. I was posted to a school and on my part the school owner(a woman) will call on me to go and buy petrol from the station even when I am inside the class, she will ask me to suspend it where as there are cleaners and a driver. On other occasions I might be call upon to go and repair faulty computer in a state I do not even know anywhere and I still remember that very fateful day I lost my way, I waka inside sun that day eh…. I do not even bother to go back to school I just went home straight then it wasn’t long I received a call from the woman that why would I leave for my house when I didn’t see the person they ask me to go and meet I had to drop the call on her nd switch off my phone. All these errands doesn’t go well with me.

This matter had me sanctioned for three days and she went on to call the secretariat that I haven’t been coming to school. It was the staff of the school who pointed the register book to those inspector who came nd the staff defended me thoroughly. This even led to altercations between some staffs to the woman as they rebuke her nd about 7 teachers left the school at the end of the term of which they sited they can cope with the woman.

Don’t let me talk about how they use to pay me like a begger whenever I am to receive my salary and where I was provided to be staying is nothing to write about. The woman refused to pay the landlord that I began to pay for electricity bill from my pocket, the landlord has to tell me he knows many corper that has been referred to the school nd they ended up fighting the woman.

Thankfully corona pandemic bailed me out as I only spent just 3 months in the school before I left, I didn’t even go to the school to bid them goodbye on the day of pop.

If u can’t tolerate his attitude then u can put a stop to whatever u have been doing for him out of ur pure mind. Sometimes we shouldn’t allow people to maltreat us just because we want them to see us as someone of good behavior/character. This man is trying to slave tag u with this his attitude by even asking his friend to also dump his bag for u. If u are trying to humble just because u need one or two help just know If he didn’t help then someone else will. My one cent.

There are many opportunities for a Biochemistry graduate. However, nepotism in Nigeria MUST affect your chances:

If you graduated with at least a 2:1 and you are 25 years or below then you can easily secure a job in the following organizations if you are good enough to pass Aptitude test & interview:

i. Audit firms: KPMG, ERNST & YOUNG, DELLOITE, PWC
ii. Banks
iii. Food Industries: Nigerian Breweries (M.SC required), Nestle, International Breweries, Coca Cola, Guiness Nigeria
iv. Pharmaceutical Industries as Sales Rep

Alternatively, if you are connected and know a big man in government:
i. Research Institutes (We have more than 30 in Nigeria & Biochemists are well positioned. You start as Research Officer II and grow and become a director)
ii. Monotechnic/Polytechnics as lecturer
iii. Federal Universities as lecturer (M.SC, PhD required)
iv. Government Agencies: DPR (as environmentalist), NSE (Graduate Trainee), NARICT, NILEST, NABDA, NAFDAC etc as Research officers
v. Teacher (PGDE required)

In Nigeria today, no discipline guarantees you a job, Medicine inclusive.

A yoruba graduate may secure a better paying job than a doctor.

I am a passionate Biochemist (B.SC, M.SC). Secured a job 8 months after my M.SC and today, I earn more than a professor of Medicine. Even a Matron cannot come close.

If you are a fresh graduate, it is time to ponder and tell yourself the truth.

You need to be patient, prayerful, diligent, and determined to succeed.

No profession be it Engineering, Nursing, Medicine will guarantee you success.

People are just too quick to render a discipline/specialization useless but I can’t blame, it is the country we reside in. Last time an engineer with vast experience in the industry was here pouring out his frustration about the profession. A whole engineering profession which is also among the elite professions.

SIMPLIFIED:
There are three viable options I will suggest for her.
1) Take the advice of the brother and go to school of Nursing, there are lots of people with first degree going back to study nursing. Three years is a short time, she may have nothing tangible in three years time running contract bank job or one sales job with target as opportunities for Biochemistry are almost non existent with lack of research facilities. School of Nursing does not go on strike unlike going to the university, and she will be done in 3years as against five for university nursing. UK places both on same scale and she can do a top bsc in one year over there if she starts working.
2) If the brother can sponsor her for a masters in UK she can go for MSc in Biomedical Sciences with placement which will give her opportunity to gain experience of the NHS laboratory system. She will then apply to IBMS UK for top up modules in order to take courses relevant to get HCPC registration as a UK Biomedical scientist ( Biochemistry option). Biomedical scientist are in demand in the UK also and start on a level higher than Nurses in the UK.
3) Gain 6-12months work experience in hospital setting in Nigeria, she can do auxiliary program or voluntary assistant work to gain clinical experience and apply for MSc Mental health or Adult Nursing in the UK Pre registration. This is for 2years and will enable her to register as Nurse in UK. Although more expensive than normal masters program and usually application is more stringent. I have a friend resuming this September in UK for same program with a bachelor in Medical Biochemistry and working experience in Primary health center.

Great insight. I believe people ruling out the option of proceeding for masters with her biochemistry degree are not aware of the opportunities associated with furthering in biochemistry at masters level. They seems the course is as useless as it is here in our dear country lol.

Hello All,

A friend studied Biochemistry in one of Nigeria's Federal Universities, she has completed NYSC but she does not have a job yet.

Her brother who currently resides in the UK wants her to enrol in a school of Nursing in Nigeria and she is not happy with what her brother wants.

I asked her if her brother's reason is because Nursing is profitable in the UK and she said YES, that's his reason. The goal is that she'd eventually relocate to the the UK.

My concerns are:

1. Why study a course like Biochemistry and go back to a school of Nursing? Aren't there better alternatives?
2. Most of the people I know that attended school of Nursing always go back to the Univeristy for BSc. Nursing.
3. School of Nursing in Nigeria will take her about 3 years and I am sure she will still need to write some exams before she will be able to work as a Registered Nurse in the UK.

Are there possibilities of moving to the UK to study that version of Nigerian School of Nursing? If yes, how expensive is it?

On the other hand, if she's able to go to the UK for her masters, masters in what course can she apply for (please bear in my that she is a Biochemistry graduate) that would give her chances of securing a good job in the UK ( At least, a kind of job that would still make her earn something close to what Nurses earn)?

Clinical science (medicine, nursing and co) is the new oil in the medical field. Tell your friend to listen attentively to her bro she will forever be indebted to him, fortunately enough she will be having a supporting system. Some people will mad luck sha nd will still be misbehaving, the opportunity some people are looking for and it’s far from them. She studied a basic medical science course and acing a clinical science course will be so easy for her.

As to if she wants to continue with biochemistry degree she can go for her masters in forensic science or forensic biochemistry. This will see her into paramedic or crime investigations (FBI) profession. These two, it has been pen down that they are a very lucrative professions in saner climes as well. She can still choose other courses for masters and become a researcher or going into lecturing but we all know earning as a registered nurse supersede the aforementioned professions.
