We guys have different belief systems. Some atheist believe in spirituality, others don't. Some believe in love, compassion, objective morality, others believe in survival of the fittest and subjective morality. The only thing that bind atheists is the lack of belief in a personal God.

I for one believe that the universe is an energy. Various manifestations of that energy is what we perceive and interact with. That's what I understand from Einstein's famous equation. What that energy is, how it came about and how it will end, is not known or knowable.

No. That's why they became atheist in the first place. An average atheist cannot subject him or herself to be a slave to anyone or any diety. They are not prepared to worship anything.

No. Atheism is a personal journey. It starts by questioning existing beliefs and order that had been instilled in us from birth, then progress to trying to provide alternative reasoning to those beliefs and finally ending with a total rejection of those beliefs. These doubts and questions usually arise during or immediately after teens when people's belief system are beginning to set like concrete. It's difficult for a person over 30 years to change beliefs.

It's not. Religions have a God, doctrines and central authority like priests, pastors or gurus that every one must follow. Atheism does not have these.

I have never discussed my parents with anyone outside family not to talk of some username on an anonymous forum. In my over 10 years on nairaland I have never have to discuss my parents or family for that matter with anyone and I will not start today.

If your religion and adopted culture teaches not to respect the old and aged, that's your problem, but in African culture parents are off-limits. Parents and children (adult) do not have to have identical political, religious and social views.

Children of Muslims convert to Christianity and vice versa. Children of Christians convert to animists or atheists. Fela was a typical example, his father was a highly respected reverend. Fela converted to traditional religion and changed his name. That doesn't mean you have the right to insult his father.

Even in the bible, in times of tribulations and moral decadence, the people look towards the religious leaders - prophets and priests. I was a follower of Tai Solarin those days. In fact he was he that introduced me to atheism. He was a vocal atheist who attacked Christianity in his weekly Sunday Tribune column.

Back then Nigeria was still a moderate and tolerant country, before religious fundamentalism - Boko Haram and pentecostals took over. He was even appointed by IBB as chairman of People's Bank and his atheism was never an issue. If it was today, boko haram and pentecostals would harass and threaten him.
