scholes0 I like the way you place words, but I would want you to have an understanding of some of these issues, what we find is that to obtain legitimacy from the People, the yoruboid set of Binis seem to want to "yorubanize" Bini history both local and "foreign", whatever we do we should understand that Bini is not really one sect and everyone has the right to tell their history regardless of who is more famous and prominent and we also have a right to accept what we should accept, we have seven main kings in Benin which are (1)Oba of Benin
(2.)Ogie-amien of Utantan
(3)Iyase of Udo
(4) Enogie of Ugo
5 Okaevbo of Urhonigbe
6 Enogie of Egor
7. Elawure of Usen
These stools

it is only perhaps in the mouth of yoruba affiliated kings and people that you will hear of Ogiso coming from Ife, which are the Oba of Benin and Olu-awure of Usen and other yoruba affiliated people, we had moonlight tales in Benin then growing up when Benin was not this urban, it should still be there in the villages, not for once did I hear of any Ogiso coming from Ife, I only read it for the first time on nairaland .

The Oba and the Usen people are not qualified to tell the history of the Ogisos, they don't have the locus-standi to tell it. The Ogisos and her history predates their existence in Benin. The history of the Ogisos is entirely a local business. a business of the aborigines

It looks to me like you are confused. It is clear from your unsure stance on whether to latch on to Edo to Idoma cultures.
They lived with Idoma for centuries but are very similar to Edo culture. They are even Edoid WHILE THEIR LANGUAGE IS more of Idoma (according to you) grin confusion pro max.

By the Way, there is no way to look Yoruboid. Igala are Yoruboid but have their own culture. Yoruboid is a linguistic classification, not a culture or outlook.
Same goes with all the other linguistic groupings. Infact, the Edo groups to the south of Ogori are very different from Benin culturally. Same way Degema in rivers state or Epie in Bayelsa (which are also Edoid) are also very distinct and different from Auchi or Okpella.
Deep insights.

We are not ebira.

Ogori Magongo is a border town, so we share border with ebira speaking towns.
So most of them and our people intermarry and settle as one.
Same can be said of some tribes from Edo state, they share borther with us and are very close to us.
Don't even get me started with Kwara state, which we were initially part of before the creation of Kogi state. Even now, there are still traces of Ogori and Magongo in Kwara state.

So we are not Ebira, we are Ogori/Magongo. We are a tribe of our own. Yes, we do have Yoruba ancestry which is evident from most of our surnames.
Interesting... You Ogori folks have undergone a lot of acculturation from being located at borderlands.

You folks have an interesting history here.

Great thread.

Am also from ogori, from my own understanding, the Ile ife origin claim is obscure, some Akoko-edo communities eg ibilo lay claim of origin to Ile ife too, they also bear Yoruba names and speak Yoruba, even Ekpedo which lay claim to Benin speak Yoruba very widely, the Yoruba speaking and naming in my opinion is fairly recent, and was probably influenced by ogori interaction with Yoruba who ogori traded with,I think there was also a Yoruba invasion period,as ososo community as the history of Yoruba invasion,it's more complex than a simple origin from Ile ife,if you read history of ogori by prof akerejola, you will see the complex history of ogori,do you know ogori language is gotten mainly from idoma? It might surprise you but it's researched.I seriously doubt ogori are Yoruba, ogori people don't even look or behave like Yoruba, even though ogori loves to adapt Yoruba culture a lot.Ogori is for a long time tried to absorb a lot of Yoruba culture
I have always read that Ogori folks are of Yoruba origins but your post here is very revealing. I guess this is what happens to ethnic groups that are situated at the major trading crossroads and borderlands where ethnicities meet.

There is a lady called Oreka Godis who is from Ogori via her paternal roots.

I don't think that Oral account was gotten from Udo, if it was it is not what I will take so seriously, and these are the reasons for it,
1. there is no sign of yorubaness in Udo, it is not that they migrated to the centre and say okay maybe they were submerged, for example that of Usen is so easy to believe, one can understand that they migrated down and were not submerged totally since they are at the edge, they still manage to retain their dialect alongside incorporating the language of the natives they met on ground. what about Utesse, they seem to speak a strange dialect that seem to be a mixture of yoruba and Edo. so when they talk about their yoruba antecedent, it is easier to believe, but on the other hand, Udo speak pure Bini, and is the house for the mightiest shrine in Idu or Edo land which is the Eriwmin-Idu.

today it is hard not to go online and see an Edo man from other tribal descent maybe Esan or Urhobo talking about Igodomigodo and Idu and featuring Udo, and as they feature Udo, they will be telling you that the yoruba people came around, that is why their group migrated. There is nothing you will tell me scholes0, Udo is the town with the largest tales of migration, Etsako, Esan, Urhobo, Ijaw, they can't all be lying, they couldn't have migrated from there and seem to have very related dialects with Bini and other regions. Udo seem to be the very core of what the very Edo race stand for, Urhobo, Esan, Etsako, Benin etc. the earlier history seem to be influenced by the Oba of Benin and it is just recently after the fall out with the Oba's line that is when the Iyase begun telling his history his own way. If she did migrated from Ife, how did she submerge totally to now become the core of the Edo race, when she is at the periphery, we know Udo to be very ancient and our core. Udo is a strong aboriginal community that is in the western flank. alongside with oral traditions, other facts should help in substantiating these things, it is on these basis that I find this not to be true

If you are talking about the importance of towns in the Edo race, Udo is first, it is the primal town of all Edo people, Udo's influence extend properly beyond Bini even into other Edo tribes, when you see other Edo tribes talk about migrating from Benin , they are not talking about Benin city, they are talking about Udo,

The second would be Benin, then Urhonigbe. Udo is the uniting chord of all Edo people, it is Like the Ife of the yoruba people, there is no way she would have migrated from Ife and not distribute her yoruboid trait, there is no way Udo is a Migrants town from Ife and we are not yorubas, there is no way, because the migrant population from Udo is far larger than any other Benin community.

There are variations but Udo is at the core of what Edo is, the oldest families in Benin is from Udo

Lastly Edo is not a corruption of Udo nor was it gotten from it, vive-versa, what we have is that the name Edo was that of a servant who helped the Oba in ascending the throne and in turn the Oba named the Bini city and country they are distinct and light years apart, they did not in anyway affected each others name.

It is not believable, Udo is at the periphery, she is not yoruba speaking, she does not even speak it as one of her dialect, she does not even speak a mix, she speak super pure Bini that a man from The Eastern flank of Urhonigbe and Oza would not have any trouble comprehending. My brother Oudobo does not add up. My brother there is no community that is more Edo than Udo, if at all Udo migrated, then every other Bini communities migrated.

Neccesity is laid on me to defend what is ours, and that I would do passionately, Udo is not a Migrants town at all let alone being one from the south west. Udo is our core, I am an eastern Bini man but I tell you this with all confidence, Udo is our core and our rallying point not just for the Binis but for the entire Edo race. Intuitively and instinctively you will just know it is not true
Insightful.

Is this Udo the same place as Idu (near Benin) where a branch of the Onitsha people say they migrated from?

I will advise this temporary government to get to work.
For your information, President Bola Tinubu was the Treasurer at Mobil Oil at a senior level when he returned from the United States to Nigeria in the 1980s to the 1990s. So, he and the top Mobil executives are NOT talking trash. The position of Treasurer is a very senior finance position at any multinational company such as ExxonMobil. They definitely would be discussing the movement of the Mobil HQ to Uyo or Eket in Akwa Ibom State or maintainance of some major presence there for all we know.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu too was also a Treasurer at the major bank when he was working in the private sector. It shows the folks at that level of Treasurer are well-grounded in accounting and finance.

As an oil and gas technocrat that Tinubu is, he definitely would have discussed the entire oil and gas industry from an elevated perspective and it is good to have an insider like Tinubu as the President who would discuss issues for the benefit of all.

Indeed. The Mosalasi axis of Mushin and Surulere axis right up to the Jibowu end of Ikorodu [like you stated] marked the boundary between the Old Western Region and the old Lagos pre-May 27, 1967.

Ikeja, Mushin, Ilupeju, Isolo, Agege, the entire Lekki Peninsula, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo, Badagry, etc, were all in the Old Western Region and were governed by dynamic Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, and his lieutenants right up till they were carved out and merged to form the new Lagos State on May 27, 1967. 3 days later, on May 30, 1967, the bearded Eastern Region rebel leader seceeded from Nigeria simply because General Gowon created 12 new states thereby fulfilling the wishes of the minority ethnicities of Calabar, Ogoja, Rivers [COR] Movement who had been calling for self-government and separation from perceived Ibo domination in the governance of the Old Eastern Region even before the British left Nigeria in 1960.

This is a great post. There was a thread about the people who founded different parts of Lagos on here a few days ago and if you understand the etymology of Yoruba names - you can pretty much tell the subgroups of Yoruba a lot of them belong to.

I think Oyo seems to always get neglected when it comes to indigenous Lagosians despite Oyo people being one of the original inhabitants of what’s known as Lagos today. With Badagry for example: Oyo and Aworis have a better claim to it than the Eguns (Ogus) who’re settlers that arrived there after leaving Whydah (I think or is it Quidah?) - due to the King Ghezo. I don’t know if you have seen Viola Davis and John Boyega’s “The Warrior King” (the movie isn’t 100% historically accurate tho) but it did show when the people of Quidah were attacked by King Ghezo. I believe that’s when a lot of them migrated to what’s know today’s as Badagry. Ikoyi is another one: Onikoyi anywhere in Yorubaland is Oyo, so that’s pretty straightforward. Also, with Eyo festival - the Dosunmu family inherited Eyo from Ijebu (Iperu-Remo) via marriage thus making them the custodian of Eyo in Lagos as Adimu orisha but the 2nd most powerful Eyo (I can’t remember its name) is Oyo (from Iseyin). Etc.

Let me go on a tangent a bit with the excerpt about Ijebuland sharing borders with Osun. I didn’t really know that and thanks for the heads up. It makes the claim that Ijebus stationed tens of thousands of Ijebu warriors in Ife to protect Ife during the Yoruba wars much more plausible now. I always thought Ijebus just shared borders Oyo state since Ijebus are part of the integral part of the Yoruba settlers in Ibadan - after the Egbas vacated the city and migrated to their current abode in Abeokuta. I was going to delve more into Ife and the pre-Oduduwa migration of Yoruba groups like Aworis and Eastern Yoruba subgroups from Ife and Ife empire but I’ll leave that for another day.
Thanks for the great feedback and adding more meat to the topic @Creeper.

Ah! Indeed, I have a fantastic YouTube documentary video made by Mr. Tunde Kelani about the history of Porto Novo (Ajase Ile) which is a Yoruba city in Benin Republic. The Oba of Ajase Ile told Tunde Kelani that his ancestors migrated from Iseyin to establish Ajase otherwise called Porto Novo centuries back.

What also interested me was his reference to how the Yorubas of Ajase allowed the Ogus to settle in their midst. The Ogus were said to be related to the indigenous Yoruba of Ajase so they welcomed them.

I made reference to the above because you alluded to the Oyo and Ogu relationship in the Badagry axis. The Aworis and Ogus are indigenes of Badagry LGA which is distinct from Badagry town though.

I'll check up the Viola Davis and John Boyega movie recommendation below too.

P.S. @Creeper... Here's the documentary video of Tunde Kelani's visit to the Yoruba city of Ajase Ile [Porto Novo] in Benin Republic. The Oba of Ajase was interviewed and he indicated that their ancestors migrated originally from Iseyin in Oyo State to establish Ajase Ile.

@JohnnA1,
Thank you for the feedback. Tbh, NL contains a lot of info on Lagos indigenes and the larger Yoruba history that have been treated from back in the day. With the NL search function and the right keywords, you can easily dig up past threads that have intensely dealt with this same subject matter since 2005.

I agree that more concise info is needed and the mass media back in Nigeria will have to be used to educate the larger public about the history of Lagos and more. For instance, it is only Lagos Island that was the capital of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991, but a lot of ignorant folks from another ethnic group FALSELY think it is the whole of Lagos State that was used as the capital of the British. Lagos State only came into existence on May 27, 1967, so, Lagos (Island) and Lagos State are two different geographical and political areas.

All the best.

Awori,Egba,Ijebu

What some people have refused to learn about their Ancestors can kill them completely
Indeed! Those Yoruba clans or subgroups are represented in what is now Lagos State from centuries back. Aromire migrated from the Aramoko-Ekiti axis but settled in the midst of earlier Awori migrants in Eko. "Eko Aromire ilu ogbon."

Ebute Meta was settled by immigrants from Abeokuta and this is why the place has an Egba vibe to it with infrastructure put up by the Egba Christians who were expelled in the late 1800s by the Egba Chiefs led by Sodeke on the suspicion of collaborating with the British to undermine Egba military ascendancy.

As for Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, he was simply clueless about his ancestral origins. There is a strong belief that his father's paternal lineage (Vivour) is not of Yoruba origin though his father's maternal (Rhodes) is of Yoruba origin. Both lines Rhodes and Vivour are of formerly enslaved Saro returnee origins.

There is a book excerpt that was shared with me here on NL which alluded to the fact that the Vivour patriarch who was born in Sierra Leone in the 1800s and settled in Fernando Po as a merchant "probably" had an enslaved Ibo father who was set free from a slave ship in Sierra Leone.

Only that family can clarify this because Rhodes and Vivour are two different family trees, though related by marriage.

Thrash. Protection should be against the dominant Yorubas fom other Southwest not Southeast States and promotion of indigenous Lagos dialects. Lagos should be for the real natives in political offices not Osun or Ogun people.
@Abagworo,

I've been a veteran member of NL since 2005, and I'm giving this feedback so that YOU will understand things in the right historical context as an old member here yourself.

For your information, over 95% of the total landmass of Lagos State of today was carved out of what is now Ogun State. That part that was carved out when Lagos State was created primarily for the indigenes [Ijebus, Aworis, Ogus, etc] on May 27, 1967 by General Yakubu Gowon alongside 11 other states, was located in the Old Western Region which was governed by the Action Group party of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN [who was once the Prime Minister] in partnership with his political lieutenants.

If you look at the FIRST MAP I attached below, you will see that Ijebuland and Aworiland STRADDLE both sides of Ogun and Lagos States.

The Awori-Yorubas who are land owners and indigenes of both Ogun State and Lagos State migrated from Ile Ife in what is now Osun State. Recently, the Awori Obas of Ogun and Lagos States paid a historic visit back to Ile Ife which is their original ancestral homeland and their quarters still exists in Ile Ife as seen in YouTube videos online.

Second, the Ijebu-Yorubas are also indigenes of both Ogun State and Lagos State. Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Ikorodu LGA, Epe LGA, Ajah, etc, are ALL part of the larger Ijebuland which extends directly into Ijebuland in Ogun State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is an Ijebu man so his presence as the Governor is in order being that Ijebuland is part of Lagos State. Former Governor Akinwumi Ambode is originally an Ilaje-Yoruba man from Ondo State. Ambode's father was a Prince from Ilajeland who was posted to Epe as a teacher during the days of the Old Western Region and he passed on there and his remains were returned to Ondo State as a member of the Royal family in his Ilaje ancestral homeland. Akinwumi Ambode of course grew up in Epe.

Governor Lateef Jakande of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, was originally from Omu Aran in Kwara State, but was born on Lagos Island after his parents migrated from Omu Aran. Awolowo raised his hands during the 1979 election cycle and his victory was assured.

So, the indigenes of Lagos and Ogun States see themselves as ONE people... the Aworis, Ijebus, Ogus, etc. Even Ijebuland shares boundaries with Osun State as can be seen from the attached map below.

It is just like the Ngwas of Abia who originally migrated from Mbaiseland in Imo State. From the history books and online articles I have read the Ngwas and Mbaise are related to one another. Even Abia State's Alex Otti's paternal ancestry is from Arochukwu, but he is now an Aro-Ngwa.

Egun on the other hand is a language on its own, seperate from Yoruba. A Yoruba speaker can never understand Egun, vice versa.

The similarity is in the area of culture, history and worldview to some extent. The Egun has their variant dialects, just like Yoruba.

Aja, Ajara, Setor, Gbekon, Alada, Tori are some forms of Egun dialects. Meanwhile, people of Whydah and cotonou speaks Yoruba and Alada.

Others only bear Yoruba names, worships their version of 'Yoruba gods' such as Sango, Dudua, Ifa, Roko and patronises 'Bokonor' (obo kor no: charm-sand-peeps).

Juju in Egun language actually means 'black colour'. Vior also means black. Votun means venerated idol; 'voodoo' or 'juju' means 'obo' 'Ohbow'.

My grandma own is Geleodun, from 'Geleodun bi kamoo we, kamoowe o dabi koyeni': headgear is not so pleasant if you can't tie it right, to tie it right is not as pleasant as when it's a perfect-fit.

The Egun uses Yoruba language to spice their language (which is as beautiful as any language) and to break monotony.

Have you forgotten she was almost dragged to court in 2019 for 38m tax debt. Everyone criticised her then. Even you guys supporting her now because she aligned with your political choice. The lady is a serial defaulter. Stop defending here.

In the United States, you dare NOT waste time in filing your annual tax returns. Indeed Nigeria has been very lax with the collection of taxes right from the military era and this is why she is struggling financially. My OG, the movie veteran Wesley Snipes got into serious trouble for defaulting in tax payments a few years back and he got jailed for that.

Iyabo should NOT let this same tax defaulting to keep happening to her. She has to get an accountant or tax specialist to resolve this if she must stay in Lagos State as an entrepreneur.

She should pay up what is fair and due... grin But then, is the Governor the person Iyabo should be talking to here? Payment of taxes are mandatory in many Western countries and you will be prosecuted if you default.

Only 500,000 citizens/residents of Lagos State were paying taxes as revealed by former Governor Akinwumi Ambode. Meanwhile, over 20 million live in that small land mass called Lagos State with the attendant pressures on facilities. Who does that?
