Politics / Re: Impeach Jonathan Now In The Interest Of Nigerians – Senator by Yaya6: 1:00pm On Mar 13, 2013
The senator should first impeach himself, because they have never passed any law that is functioning except if it comes to looting money. Let the senators pass a law for Nigerians to stop sending students outside Nigeria for studies. Then we will know if they can impeach the president.

This must be a joke for real. The senator has nothing to say. he should go and renounce his appointment and find place to sit.

He said that a strong protest had been lodged with the Senegalese authorities over the failure of the police to respond promptly.

In her submission, Mrs. Katyen Jackden, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Senegal, said a distress call was made to the nearest police station some few meters away from the Chancery for help, but they responded 30 minutes later.

It shows that the Senegalese police must have compromised. Are the police the same everywhere?
Politics / LASU Killings: 34 Arrested Students Face Extra Year by Yaya6: 3:47pm On Mar 12, 2013
No fewer than 34 students of the Lagos State University have missed the first semester examinations which began on Monday.

The students are currently in police detention following the killings of two students of the institution.

The implication of this is that the students will automatically carry over all their courses.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the development could also lead to some of them having extra year because some of the courses must be passed before advanced level of the courses could be studied.

PUNCH Metro had reported on March 5, 2013 that over 70 students were arrested in connection with the killings of two students of the school, Hip Hop artiste, Damilola Olaniyan aka Damino Damoche and Kabiru Atoyebi.

It was learnt that after the suspects were screened at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, about 36 students were released while others remained in custody.

The Students Union Government of the institution had appealed to the school authorities to ensure the suspected students were allowed to participate in the examination, while their interrogation continued.

According to a source in the school, who pleaded anonymity, the SUG feels that the students do not deserve to be treated like criminals since they have not been found guilty.

He said, “The students were indiscriminately arrested in their hostels by policemen and abandoned in the cell since March 3, 2013.”

But the SUG’s Public Relations Officer, Adeleke Stephen, said, “This is a clear example of the effect of cultism. I see no reason why students should not face their education. For the good of all, I advise all students on campus to avoid engaging in cultism and all acts that may lead to disorderliness.”

All efforts to speak with the spokesperson for the institution, Sola Fosudo, proved abortive as all calls made to his telephone rang out.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. John Obafunwa, when contacted, directed our correspondent to his deputy.

However, a senior official of the school, who craved anonymity, said it was not LASU’s fault that the students missed sitting for the examination. He added that the school would not make any concession for them.

Politics / Nigerian Police Games Amidst Insecurity In Nigeria by Yaya6: 11:12pm On Mar 05, 2013
Undeniably, the country as it is today is a far cry from what a well meaning Nigerian desires. Even the air that we breath today is insecure. it is either the Boko Haram or JAMBS are bombing, kidnapping or slaughtering in the north, or militants, pirates and kidnappers are making the south south and south east inhabitable. As well meaning Nigerians, what do we get from the agency that is responsible for our safety?

It is no longer news that the Nigerian Police is currently in Port Harcourt for its 3rd edition of the police game. I was discussing with a friend who moved his family from the north to the village recently and he humbly submitted, "the Police are gaming in the mist insecurity? What are they celebrating? You can get that only from them." his statement was thought provoking. I don"t know if Nairalanders feel the way i do, but i feel the game is absolutely unnecessary , especially knowing that the country is facing security challenges from all corners.

Recall that the IGP announced sometimes that it has budgeted 500 million for the game. He reportedly maintained that the amount was for accomodation, transport, kits and logistics and prize money. More disturbing is the IGs claim that a whooping 1.5bn has been budgeted for games insurance. The one million dollar question here is, is the game a requirement for maintenance of law and order? After its completion, will it reposition the force for greater efficiency?

Just recently Channels Television served Nigerians a heart rending documentary on the deplorable state of the police college in Ikeja, the college was an eyesore and yet they are gaming with N500 million and 1.5bn insurance fee. Seven foreign nationals are still in Boko Haram net yet the police are gaming; also Kwara state police commissioner was murdered three days ago in Enugu and they are busy partying in Port Harcourt. Can we then trust this set of people with our lives. Over 4000 men of the NPF are participating in the games, living Nigerians vulnerable to attacks. NAIRALANDERS HOLD ON TO YOUR GOD FOR WITH POLICE, YOU ARE A DEAD MAN.

years. So, you cannot correct it overnight. It takes time, even if you have the money.

The fact here is that Nigerians except so much to happen in seconds...personally i must commend GEJ efforts towards resuscitating the power sector of the country. it is definite that the improvement cannot be at once rather a gradual process which might take a while to achieve. We should all know that Rome was not built in a day, so we should not expect an overnight turnaround in the sector. GEJ should be allowed to work and Nigerian should learn ignore external influence on our polity.

Politics / Sanusi Takes N25,000 Per Night For Local Trips —CBN by Yaya6: 9:14am On Feb 04, 2013
The Central Bank of Nigeria has said that its Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, is only entitled to N25,000 per night for his local trips.

The bank said this in its reply to a letter by civil rights lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu requesting Sanusi to disclose, among others, his total monthly remuneration and other entitlements.

Bulk of Sanusi’s earnings, including the cost of his foreign trips, was however not disclosed, a development Aturu had said he was “not completely satisfied with”.

Aturu had, through a letter dated December 31, 2012, requested for the information on the strength of the Freedom of Information Act.

The legal practitioner had also sought to know how much was Sanusi’s monthly impress and the cost of his trips within and outside the country.

However, the CBN, in its reply to Aturu’s request, through a letter dated January 16, 2013, by the apex bank’s Director/Legal Adviser, Legal Services Department, S.M Onekutu, cited a pending case as the reason for declining to release the details of Sanusi’s total remuneration.

“The governor is entitled to N25,000 per night as incidental allowance on his local trips,” Onekutu said, responding to part of Aturu’s questions.

On why the cost of Sanusi’s trips abroad, could not be disclosed, Onekutu merely said, “The governor’s entitlement is as approved by the Federal Government”.

On Sanusi’s total remuneration, the letter read in part, “The governor’s remuneration is as stipulated by the Board and approved by Mr. President in accordance with Section 8(3) of the CBN Act.

“Besides, the governor’s emolument, and indeed, the emolument structure of the CBN is benchmarked against the Banking industry as approved in the Federal Government’s White Paper on the Presidential Committee on Consolidation of Emoluments in the Public Service.

“However, we are unable to release the details at the governor’s alary and allowances as that information is already subject of litigation in Suit No FHC/L/CS/016/2011: Uzoegwu F.O .C Vs CBN & HAGF. The matter is an appeal and it will be prejudice to comment on it.”

The CBN further said its boss occasionally used chartered planes to travel within the country “as dictated by exigencies” but said time was too short to release detailed information on it.

Though Aturu commended Sanusi for not ignoring his request as many Nigerian public officers would have done, he said he would give time for the CBN to add up its figures on some of his requests yet to be answered satisfactorily.

Romance / Watch Out, Your Partner Could Be Manipulative by Yaya6: 10:15am On Jan 14, 2013
Manipulation in relationships is a form of emotional abuse. When a man/woman is manipulative, it can lead to his/her partner feeling ‘trapped’ and unable to escape. www.ehow.com, lists traits that a manipulative partner could possess:

Uses money

A manipulative man may try to convince his partner that she need him financially. He may spend lots of money on her in the beginning of the relationship to get her used to living well and receiving plenty of gifts. He may even invite her to move in and encourage her to quit her job so that she has few options if she decides to leave. Later in the relationship, he may stop spending money on her each time there is an argument to try to regain control and make her feel bad.

Acts depressed

Manipulative people often act depressed or even suicidal when their partners consider ending the relationship. He or she may say something like, “I can’t live without you” or “I am going to hurt myself if you leave and it will be your fault.”

Plays mind games

Many people manipulate their partners by playing mind games. For example, the person may spend time with his or her partner going on fun dates, but as soon as a disagreement occurs, he or she avoids contact with him or her until they starts to worry about them and wonder why they disappeared.

Avoids communication

Manipulators may avoid talking about their problems or how they are manipulative, or they may completely deny it. If accused of being manipulative, they often become defensive or attempts to make their partner feel guilty for saying such things.

Isolation

The man may convince his partner to stop seeing her friends and family to hide his level of manipulation. This is especially true if the friends and family members point out his bad behaviour on a regular basis. He might use guilt to stop his partner from seeing them or he may find a way to make her resent the other people, so she will stop seeing them on her own.

Blames others

Each time a problem arises, a manipulative person blames the problem on his or her partner. They use blame and guilt to make their partners feel as though they caused the disagreement, leading them to apologise and try to fix the relationship.

Bullies

Bullying is another form of manipulation. If a man uses threats to keep his partner around, whether he follows through or not, it is manipulation and abuse.

Bribes and affection

Some manipulators pretend to be nice to you to get their way. A person may bribe you to go on a date with him, for example, by offering you a free meal, drink or other desirable item. She may use affection to coerce you into doing her chores or taking over her responsibilities. The manipulator will, rather than call you derogatory names, say that she knows you don’t mind helping them since you love them so much. At first, it seems like the person is kind and grateful, but after she uses this excuse repeatedly, her true motives become obvious.

Guilt

People with manipulative personalities know how to effectively use guilt to their advantage. For instance, your partner may say “You don’t really love me” if you refuse to give in to his requests. He may exaggerate his disappointment and make you feel like you are the source of his unhappiness. He may use crying and tears to make you feel guilty. Even children can use this ploy to get their way. Emotional manipulators cast themselves in the role of the victim to make everyone around them feel sorry for them.

Disrespect and blame

People who manipulate others do not have any respect for their victims. A manipulator may ask his victim to do something he believes is unethical. When the victim protests or refuses, the manipulator continues to harass them until they give in. Manipulators are very passive-aggressive. They will blame you for things that go wrong because of their behaviour. Manipulators try to appear innocent, even when they are obviously guilty, using others around them as scapegoats.

Politics / I Will Always Be A Pdp Member – Ibb by Yaya6: 12:01pm On Oct 30, 2012
Chieftain of Nigeria’s ruling party, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has dismissed speculation that he intends to leave the party.

The former military president who spoke in Minna on Sunday after paying Sallah homage to Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu at his Tunga residence, said the party was doing its best in improving the lives of the people.

Babangida added that plans by the opposition parties to merge in 2015 was normal in democracy, advising the party to remain focused on the task ahead.

On the issue of internal affairs of the PDP, IBB said “You cannot expect the party to remain the same after many year. Even if it was over 100 years there will always be room for improvements.”

“They (PDP) are doing fine. They have the structure of a political party and go out to seek for vote and be voted for. They are doing exactly what a political party is supposed to do.”

“That is what political parties are all about. They struggle for power. Whether it is a gang up or coming together, there is no cause for alarm.”
He urged public institutions and its officers to work harder in order to achieve a peaceful nation.

“The Federal Government, the governors, local government chairmen, councillors and the public have roles to play in ensuring the security of lives and property.”residence, said the party was doing its best in improving the lives of the people.

Politics / Kofi Annan: Abiola’s Death Was Suspicious by Yaya6: 9:39am On Oct 19, 2012
In a most-revealing new memoir titled, “Interventions (A Life in War and Peace)”, former United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, has detailed the role he played in the aftermath of General Sani Abacha’s death in 1998 and his encounter with the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola a few days before the latter died.

He also revealed his delicate negotiations with the then Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi, as well as his impressions of Nigeria and key actors at the time.

Annan, who had met with Abiola at his detention house shortly before his dramatic death, said: “On our return journey, everything seemed set for Abiola’s release. But tragedy struck a week later when Abiola collapsed and died during a meeting with U.S. Under-Secretary of State Thomas Pickering. Despite the earnest intentions we had detected in Abubakar, the timing could only be considered suspicious.”

Annan also explained his role in the negotiations that led Nigeria to cede Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroun following the October 10, 2002 judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

On the Abiola saga, Annan wrote: “Moshood Abiola had been imprisoned and in solitary confinement since 1994. Previously he had been a millionaire businessman reveling in the most extravagant of lifestyles, acquired through a long-standing and close relationship with Nigeria’s military governments.

“But in 1993, there was a short-lived attempt to introduce democracy, and Abiola entered the presidential race. When Abiola looked entirely set to win, the final and full count was never allowed by the reigning military government of President Ibrahim Babangida, even though he had set up the elections in the first place.
“Abiola backed down quietly, but the vote changed his relationship with the government. He had acquired an unprecedented swell of support from many sides of the ethnic and religious divides that criss-crossed Africa’s most populous country.

“When President Babangida was ousted from power and replaced by General Sani Abacha later that year, in the midst of Nigeria’s deepening financial crisis, the new president dissolved the institutions that had been formed to move the country toward a semblance of democracy—the parliament, the thirty state governments, and every single local council—and declared all political parties illegal.

Politics / Awesome Reward For Honest Cab Man by Yaya6: 5:13pm On Oct 09, 2012
“I was flown to Lagos with my wife and our Association Chairman. I attended an elaborate ceremony organized by the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) to showcase integrity. I was given some amount of money. I am so happy about it.”

Those were the words of Mr. Imeh Usuah, the Abuja Cab driver whose story of integrity was published in THISDAY edition of September 20, 2012. He has been reward. The story headlined, “One Missing Hero at the National Honour’s Awards” caught the attention of many individuals, corporate organizations, and government agencies. In the end, it was the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) that fired the first shot at recognising integrity.

Mr. Usuah had returned the sum of N18 million to the two Britons who forgot the money in his cab. He said, “I did it to let people know, especially the foreigners that Nigerians are good and great people. I can go hungry for days, for as long as my integrity remains, hunger will disappear by itself”.

Perhaps, Usuah has a clairvoyance eyes to predict his own future that hunger will disappear by itself as integrity takes centre stage in his life, on September 25, exactly five days after the publication, the Security and Exchange Commission honoured a rare ‘national hero’ using him as an ambassador to launch the maiden edition of its Integrity award with the sum of 2.5 million naira reward in cash and investment.

The Director General, SEC, says, “this award is being instituted to remind our people that integrity pays and with integrity we can achieve whatever we want to achieve in life without necessarily cutting corners. Also, it is to tell everyone that integrity can take higher than improper behavior which brings people down.”

Politics / The Gambia Claims Cure For HIV by Yaya6: 3:20pm On Oct 09, 2012
The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has said that dozens of HIVand AIDS patients in the tiny West African state have been cured using his secret concoction of boiled herbs, Reuters reports.

Jammeh first announced he had found a natural remedy to cure HIV and AIDS in 2007, stirring anger among Western medical experts who claimed he was giving false hope to the sick.

“Who am I to expect that everybody would praise me,’’ Jammeh said in a state television broadcast on Sunday evening, announcing that 68 patients had been cured and discharged from a treatment centre.

“Just as the Prophet Mohammed prevailed and established Islam, I have also prevailed to cure HIV/AIDS to the point that 68 are being discharged today,’’ he said.

The World Health Organisation and the UN have said Jammeh’s HIV/AIDS treatment is alarming mainly because patients are required to cease their anti-retroviral drugs making them more prone to infection.

The president said the cured group was the seventh batch of HIV/AIDS patients undergoing his herbal remedy to have been discharged since the treatments began five years ago.

Politics / Pope's Butler Waits To Learn His Fate by Yaya6: 4:28pm On Oct 05, 2012
Five months after his arrest on charges of stealing thousands of pages of secret correspondence and documents from Pope Benedict's private office in the Vatican, his former manservant Paolo Gabriele is about to learn his fate.

If found guilty - and he has already confessed to Vatican investigators - he faces a possible maximum four-year prison sentence, which he would serve in an Italian jail under a treaty signed with Italy during fascist times.

However, Vatican sources say there is a strong possibility that Pope Benedict will use his power to pardon Mr Gabriele in the near future, perhaps even before he begins to serve a sentence. Even if he is convicted by the Vatican City Court, he will not be sent to prison until an appeal takes place, which could take months.

Mr Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three who worked his way up in the Pope's domain from a cleaner's job to the post of butler, valet and sometimes - if we are to believe him - close confidant of the pontiff, spent nearly two months in a police cell and just over another two months under house arrest awaiting trial on charges of aggravated theft.
Politics / Lawmakers Should Stop Threatening Jonathan With Impeachment – Presidency by Yaya6: 9:36am On Sep 24, 2012
The Presidency on Sunday called on the National Assembly to stop threatening President Goodluck Jonathan with impeachment.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Communication, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.

Okupe said there was no way there wouldn’t be friction between the executive and the legislature but cautioned that every disagreement should not lead to impeachment threat.

He said, “We would want to appeal to our respected lawmakers to sheathe their swords. They should stop threatening the President with impeachment every time there is a disagreement.

“They should allow the temperature of the polity to come down. We will continue to have executive/legislative conflict, but we should continue to allow maturity to come in.

“Yes, the legislature has the power to impeach, but we should not be flaunting this every time.

“We should forget about impeachment in order to build this democracy; conflict will always be there, but we must manage it.”

Asked why it was difficult for the President to implement the  resolutions passed by the National Assembly, Okupe said the action of the President was not meant to spite the lawmakers.

He also called on Nigerians to stop disparaging the office of the President.

Okupe said this in reaction to the comments credited to  the Convener, Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, describing Jonathan’s  condemnation of   the protest that greeted the January 1 removal of subsidy on petrol as “bunkum”.

Jonathan had said the protest  was sponsored by unnamed people, and that Nigerians were not totally against the policy of government.

Politics / Politicians, Stop Distracting M̶̲̥̅γ̲̣̣̥ Govt- GEJ by Yaya6: 6:24am On Sep 17, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan has called on politicians to stop distracting his administration.

He made the call in Lagos at a public presentation of Sure and Steady Transformation, a book which documents the achievements of his administration’s first year in office.

The President, who spoke through his Senior Special Adviser on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Dr. Oronto Douglas, said the call had become necessary given the preponderance of reports and comments on the 2015 elections in the media.

According to him, 24 hours is a long time in politics, wondering why politicians are talking about 2015.

He said, “There seems to be too much politics in Nigeria than governance. In other democracies, politics stops at the end of an election, and governance starts. But in Nigeria, it is the opposite.

“Politics will not put food on the table of the people. It is governance that will. Let us focus on governance.”
