Umm the possibility of it not being any of these two is very minimal, but in health, any surprise is possible grin at times we come across thing that defies any known theory or combines them all in one. (All or non law) grin

Sal C: Hmmm O+ being substituted for AB- is what I term madness! It's either she was given another person's result or whoever did that test is clueless because the reaction of these two is almost completely opposite. That person if he is a Scientist needs his licence to practice withdraw for the mean time. To think it happened in a general hospital is disheartening.

Well I believe some labs make this mistakes due to how they handle these tests. In our hospital, we don't rush this tests especially genotype. we do that overnight, and the test is kept exclusively for the Scientist on call. The rule is that the scientist much conduct the test at least thrice and compare the results before giving out the result to avoid mistakes, because of this we have severally seen people who will say they have been AA since childhood and now we say they are AS. But so far our result have not been the wrong one.

Yes I agree that some of these "substandard Labs" should be closed down, even some labs in hospitals are worse than the road side lab. I once worked with one. And I couldn't help but resign especially when I was asked to train a secondary school leaver in the Lab, that's the problem we have in this country, substandard labs and unqualified workers.

Sorry about your cousin, I usually advice people to get this tests in different labs before getting convinced. If the two result conflict, they should get a third one. It's not too expensive, and life and safety. Is paramount.
@ bolded 1 I have this feeling you work at a very standard hospital or Laboratory grin

@ 2nd bolded na real wa ooo secondary sch leavers ke? shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked
Even when I did my IT in the Lab of a general hospital as an undergraduate majority of the work we did was sorting and spinning samples labelling pipette water for manual glucose estimation and sometimes recording shikena. Most of what we do is ask questions look and learn.

Its really nice gisting with some one in the profession wink wink

Errm if by chance you work with the government whats your view about this your colleagues strike angry angry angry

Christianity EtcRe: The Christian Chatbox ( sticky) by yetseyi(f): 10:45pm On Jul 02, 2014
Sal C: Yes the HbASC is a rare one which even 90% of lab scientists and doctors don't even know of it's existence, I remember the first time I got that result, (the first in the history of our hospital) not a single person in the entire hospital knew of it grin everyone was like "Sal, there must be a mistake somewhere" grin

Anyway till date we are yet to have a generally accepted explanation to it but we know it's there because we've seen atleast four of those, other hospitals too are beginning to see it.

Well when we sent it to the council seeking for clarification, ( sorry for our country that can't provide funds for proper research) we got two possible causes .....

Let me dangle a little into explaining the causes of HbS and HbC for a better understanding

When a child is born, he has two major globin chains, ie alpha and gamar chains, this is known as HbF ( fetal haemoglobin) at least six months and above of the child's birth, the garma chain begins to metamorphosize into Beta chain and we begin to represent this as HbA (adult haemoglobin) at this stage you can easily conduct genotype test for the baby.

On this beta chain, we have continuously the glutamic acid as the normal amino acid that make up this chain. Now if by chance another amino acid replace any of this G.A at any position, it gives rise to what we call haemoglobinopathy or haemoglobin variant.

If the amino acid Valine replaces glutamic acid in the sixth position on the beta globin chain, it leads to sickling, giving the RBC and S shape with low oxygen affinity ... This is what is referred to as HbS.

If it happens that on thesame position 6 the amino acid Lysine is the one replacing the glutamic acid instead of valine, we have HbC instead of HbS.
If Lysine replaces G.A in position 26 we have HbE
If lysine replaces G.A in position 121, we have HbO etc etc
Now the major problem in HbASC is that the replacement that gives rise to both takes place on thesame position 6. On the beta chain. While the amino acids that replaces to give rise to each differs. Ie Valine and Lysine
Note also that in a person's body, there are numerous beta globin chains not just one.

Now the question is ... Could it be that both Lysine and valine forcefully replace the G.A. on the sixth position in every beta globiin chain or does it mean that in a persons' system, lysine replaced glutamic acid in position 6 of some of these numerous beta globin chains while valine replaces glutamic acid on others?
The answer so far revolves around these two possibilities with the later being better favoured but none is proved yet.

That's the little I can say till further proof is produced.

Note- presently there is a machine that is capable of detecting a newborn's genotype as early as three days after birth. (That's btw)
I hope this helps
. grin
@ 2nd bolded really shocked e don reach nigeria?

I understand the aminoacid substitution perfectly. cheesy
had a first degree in biochemistry

@ 1st bolded hmm it could be either of the two cry or none at all

Christianity EtcRe: The Christian Chatbox ( sticky) by yetseyi(f): 10:10pm On Jul 02, 2014
Sal C: Lol.... No, those three are the most commonly seen, again I have to note that most people at least here in Nigeria who think they are AS are actually AC. That aside let me answer your question.

AA + AA =YES
AA +AS =Yes
AA +SS =Yes
AA +AC=Yes
AA +CC=Yes Infact AA can marry any genotype at all

But
AS +AS=No
AS +AC =Possible, the worst they can produce is SC while SC is not as bad because HbC doesn't pose much stress such a person will only have low to low-normal haemoglobin. Therefore won't require much transfusion since the half life of the RBC in HbC is 32day. It is better compared to HbSS inn the sense that it has a slightly higher oxygen affinity

To cut the story short, the only ones that are strictly discouraged are the one which are likely to produce SS off springs. Others aren't So bad and can easily be managed and the mortality rate is relatively low.

So if you are AA go on and marry anyone but once you have the presence of HbS in you, run as fast as you can from anyone who equally has HbS. grin
i think some of these roadside labs should be closed down. a lot of people are going about with results that are fake.

I had a cousin who was told she was Oplus not knowing she was AB minus. She lost her babe infact two due to the rhesus factor ish. It was later that they did another analysis that said she was ABminus. And that was even at a general hospital, I have seen how easy it is to make mistakes with these stuffs but anyway you guys are trying sha. I dnt think I can work in a medical lab.
Research lab yes. smiley
But these hospital labs we have in naija here where simple lab rules are not followed NOsad.

Christianity EtcRe: The Christian Chatbox ( sticky) by yetseyi(f): 2:07pm On Jul 02, 2014
Sal C: Strictly speaking, in accordance with manifested physical trait, I will say NO, at least non that I've seen, heard or read of. When you hear of genotype AB, the said person might be referring to "the genetic makeup" which when duly analysed, is taking about the ABO system.

Let me not confuse you now, what am saying is this.. You cannot go to the lab for genotype test and the result given to you reads thus.. Genotype-AB or Genotype-HbAB as the scientist deems fit to present the result.

The possible genotypes you can find here are.. AA, AS, AC, SS, SC, CC, and ASC.

There are also haemoglobin D and E but they are rarely found in Africa, therefore don't be surprised to hear of genotype AD, AE,DE, CD etc etc but I never heard of haemoglobin B therefore the possibility of have B included in any genotype is almost 0. Except the scientist wants to present us with a new discovery grin

But the B+ blood group is very possible.
Owkie just wanted to ask. i saw your post on the HbASC last year I think. I had expected that thread to grow but it didnt. kindly explain please
I have also heared of the Hb D,E stuff.
Also i just googled now and saw something on Ab genotype.
Anyway all is well

ihedinobi2: "Popular opinion". I find that a very interesting thing to say. Going by respondents on the matter at the time you wrote the above, those who stood against a woman dressing without any thought for how her looks might affect somebody else were essentially texanomaly, yetseyi and myself. On the other side were you, Mynd, Logicboy, FrancisTony (because his leaning was more toward your views than ours), at least. Since then, your companions have increased even more with all the high-fives and blowing kisses going around.

So, what exactly made that opinion popular?
Christianity EtcRe: The Christian Chatbox ( sticky) by yetseyi(f): 11:24am On Jul 02, 2014
netotse: Thanks...I wrongly assumed the religion section in NL was all about pointless arguments. I have learnt otherwise so...

My story (it's an anti-climax)
I work in manufacturing so the ratio of men-to-women is something in the order of 30 to 1. in fact most of the women in my plant are married(like 90%). To make things worse, we're located in a rural area so it's safe to assume we're a group of very lustful men...lol.

For some reason, we needed to get an interpreter and here comes along this hot girl(or lady if you will), she's been working with us on or off since november. Early this year we run into each other at the estate and we get talking and somewhere along the line she mentions that engineers are "pervs" (her words not mine). She said she had worked with two engineering companies(one in lagos) and it was the same experience.

Scene 2, we were discussing another day(like most translators she's very friendly) and I asked why she wore her hair the way she did and she says her church doesn't subscribe to processing hair, we talk a bit further and I get she's not into make up and all that but she believes in looking good(she complained about us constantly giving her ugly uniforms...lol). From the discussion I can tell she believes in God beyond the sunday, sunday schedule that a lot of us subscribe to.

Scene 3, In April, it was her final day(or one of them) and she was walking past and one of the technicians she was working with was telling her bye through the glass windows, after they finished talking he kept staring, I had been behind him throughout the entire episode and the bros didn't notice me, we sha used him to "cure" in the office as per it's bosoms you were looking at throughout the whole time she was here, you didn't learn anything that's why the equipment is still spoiling, one of the senior engineers let's call him John, now remarks that Jane girl sef, she will now pack the thing very well, she knows what she is doing, someone now tells him to calm down, he now continues, twice I've given her larger uniforms so that her breasts will not be that obvious but she doesn't wear them. The babe is at least a D-cup and she wears medium t-shirts. (all this was light-hearted banter)

End of story.

Now I dont think she is deliberately trying to seduce guys but for me after John said he had stylishly tried to get her to wear less form fitting clothing which she probably considers as not being stylish I began to see how easy it would be for her to conclude engineers were "pervs", you have a friendly, hot babe working with you, of course you would be tempted to try you luck. She didn't mention any bad experience though.

when next she comes around I plan to ask her what her idea of balance between the pervy attention and the fashionable dressing is.

For me I think toning down on the dressing e.g. not wearing tight jeans and wearing t-shirts one size larger would more than half the number of pervs she has to deal with(maybe two sizes in the case of tshirts she...she's that set...lol). That's before we even go to her being a christian and having a duty not to deliberately cause her brothers to sin. what do you think?

Its very simple do not wear something that shows all your curves. Its the same issue we have been talking about but then some would say does it mean we shouldnt wear clothes our size?

ill fitted/ill suited=size larger than you are and size smaller than you are/ clothes not befitting your body type.

I believe these passages should be tempered with intent. If a woman leaves her house dressed smart, and per chance a man who lacks moral scruples is walking behind her, ogling her well rounded and packaged bum, she can't be accused of wearing what suits her because she has unintentionally tempted another man.
If we continue to do what we do factoring in every single man put there with or without a functioning brain, then we might as well throw away our free will undecided
i lol at the statement ' well rounded and packaged bum.

you could cover nd be immodest.
during the time we believe they wore long free flowing clothes and covered their heads
