I agree with you but dont you think your conclusion of msc and phd winning is based on what you read on this forum and from my post you will notice when I said in time these waits and delays may cut across all level of academic study thats if it hasnt started to cause we are even talking based on what we read here on Nairaland. This is just how it starts. Canada wasnt like this before. Gradually they would make things more frustrating in the bid to discourage people...I am not saying they won't issue visas again or that people shouldnt apply but why keep peoples application for 16 -20 weeks, some people here school has resumed and not a word of instruction from cic what is the motive behind that.

You called Austria, UK, Germany etc but have you come to think of it that the chances you have of staying back in such countries and even getting PR isn't as "easy" like that of Canada. Tell me that if today Canada decides to go the path of UK in that as soon as your done with your studies go back to your country tell me if they won't be issuing out visas to people cause they know there won't be an opportunity to stay back not to talk of work or get PR.

I had a chat with a friend who is schooling in canada doing a PGD course he left last year and i told him about the delay faced by Nigerian applicants wanting to come study in canada and he was like it seems other students from some other countries aren't facing same as this fall had many students of other countries coming in especially those wanting to do a PGD or diploma.

Secondly, a friend of mine who was going for a PGD got denied as regards insufficient fund and that he won't be leaving canada after studies...I and my friend were like "HOW" cause his family has the money wella in fact his fathers account statement was like that of a company account and he was also going for a course relating to his field of practice. My friend has decided to try the USA since his senior bro is married and lives there.

Thirdly, I know of someone who is half Togolese and half Nigerian he had to apply using his Togolese passport, left Nigeria and got his TRV within two months and he is going for PGD.

The stories above is beginning to make me think that the problem here is the disregard other countries have for Nigeria; I mean if Nigeria isn't treating its citizens right why should some other country treat Ur citizens right. The world knows Nigeria is struggling, things aren't working well and our leaders have done nothing worthy of the respect of other nations. if Nigeria was booming and blossoming the stories we hearing on here may not be the case.

People are now going to put in for MSc and PHD thinking that may be a solution, I am not trying to discourage anyone but I can bet that soon every body applying to go study in canada from Nigeria regardless of your level (Diploma, Bsc, PGD, MSC, PhD) will begin to experience long waits and unnecessary denials. The only solution is for Nigeria as a country to function well as a system and regain back its lost respect.

Why would anybody with Bsc and sometimes work experience spend millions traveling to Canada to do Postgraduate diplomas/certificates courses?

Let me answer your question since you don't know.

Firstly, canada isn't like the UK that has a masters degree programme for virtually all courses. Some courses in Canada can't be found at Masters level rather you find them at diploma, certificates, Bsc, PGD or PGC levels.

Secondly, its not every Bsc holder that graduates out of school with a second class upper as we know that most schools in canada take mostly second class upper grades for Masters level.

Thirdly, all fingers are not equal some people are within a budget and can afford the PGC or PGD fees but can't afford the masters.

Fourthly, some people need PGD or PGC to advance into a Masters programme. A PGD or PGC for some people is what they need to start there career or set themselves on a right track and its worth every million they spend.


Fifth, PGD, PGC, Diploma for some courses provides the necessary hands on experience for one to excel in the competitive labour market. I have heard stories from friends who are working in canada and they said they where picked by employers cause of the technical and practical experience the employers believed they must have picked up while studying in institutions like NAIT and SAIT.

Everyone has various reasons for going for masters or Pgc, pgd, diploma or certificate courses and some times such reasons transcends their Bsc, work experience and amount of money they will spend.

If you have your BSc certificate and NYSC discharge then you will be doing General HSE and Level 3 HSE after which you can write your membership exams and defend your project. Which is part of the requirements to be a member.
If you don't have your BSC then you may have to start from HSE level 1.

ISPON course structure has been designed after shell petroleum development company standards and will equipped you with the necessary knowledge and skill to function as HSE professional in Nigeria. ISPON is a good foundation and platform.

Although you can do other Safety certifications with international bodies like IOSH, NEBosH, CIEH, OSHA, BSC etc. to expand your horizon.

I advice one goes for ISPON now as there momentum is just about to pick up because in time it may not be easily attainable. As long as you are in Nigeria you will need to come to them for certification.

Whilst you go around doing Certifications with other bodies and companies try and do an ISPON course be certified by them cause they are backed by law now. ISPON is not SMILING.

The only reason is this : Exponential rise of technology is and will continue to cause loss of jobs. Population is also on the increase, in addition to the leaders as you rightly stated.

A job that'll take 100 people in those days requires less than 10 people now because there are automated machines to do those jobs and employers are loving it the more because it saves them operating costs.

That's why I'm a strong advocate of entrepreneurship today cos that's the only solution. Find a problem people are facing, look for a solution and bridge that gap.

Unfortunately, these are not taught in our schools these days. We're taught to become employees.

If that is where your looking at it from then that's not the angle I am looking at it from...I have heard from the elderly of how this country was before and how they enjoyed it...Infact an elderly person said this " what you young ones are presently going through we didn't go through or see it" infact there suffering was worth it after walking long kilometers going to school and fetching fire wood they came out getting good jobs, some where sponsored abroad and then our currency made sense.

My uncle told me that during his time if you had SSCE there was job for you, if you went to typing school and knew short hand job was there for you, No one was looking forward to leaving the country, people studied abroad and came back. Graduates where known for there apartment and PAN 504 and 505. In fact I know of an Uncle that entered Mobil then with SSce he was there marry, gave birth to kids, advanced to HND, BSC, MSC and PHd. Our parents didn't use to get treated anyhow as at then just cause they wanted to travel, travelling was less stressful rather what they got was a statement written boldly on their box that goes " REMEMBER THE FAMILY YOU COME FROM"

Fast forward to our time we go to school by car, bus or plane, don't have to trek, have got internet and all but yet come out of school and no job, things don't seem to make sense any more...you then start looking forward to travelling out and they still treat you any how cause you want to abandon ship go to embassies and see how Nigerians are treated...

Our parents didnt have to put up with some of the things we going through now. we live in a very complicated time plus bad leaders making the country a HELL on EARTH.

Chief I tried to PM you 2x to give you the feedback about my enquiry at Foreign affairs but no reply so I'll just say it here.

I was disappointed about the reply I got when I called an official there (I got his number from someone else). He gave a very insensitive reply about my complaint concerning the CIC time wastage and the rate of denial despite some people meeting their requirements, he wasn't really concerned, he also said that they can't interfere with their decision about who they allow into their country.

I'm not really surprised about his attitude because I've seen Nigeria citizens been maltreated by our own officials in London some times back.

Seeking a solution by employing an advocacy from our foreign affairs is not going to work because they don't care.

Nevertheless, we'll not give up but be hopeful and have faith because God is on our side.

How do you expect other countries to treat us well or not to take us for granted when our leaders and system don't even care about we the citizens. The whole world knows that Nigerian leaders and system don't give a hoot about its citizens so they have every right to take the citizens for granted after all charity they say begins at home.

If our leaders and system where reasonable and cared for its citizen who will be looking at canada, thinking about travelling out or waiting endlessly being stressed out cause of visa. I bet some people here recorded their first case of high blood pressure whilst waiting for TRV approval.

Really, I feel bad at times when I see some people give testimony cause they had there visa approved like if Nigeria was working who would be looking at canada, who will even see visa approval as testimony worthy.

If you really want to practice HSE in Nigeria then I think you should go for ISPON classes. They have been passed into law. I was with the chairman Ispon Lagos and he stated that part of the law was that you can't practice HSE in Nigeria unless you are certified by Ispon and go further to be a member. The chairman also went on to say that Ispon has started taking giant steps meeting with organizations to make them aware of the new law on board. Part of the things they told some organizations was that they can't come to Nigeria and then force its citizens to go do foreign certifications and if such can be applicable in there country i.e Do they accept Nigerian certifications in there country and why will they come to Nigeria and try to force there certifications on its citizens. Some government institutions have started coming to Ispon to certify there training centers and there trainings.

Funny enough I have seen certain HSE vacancies stating ISPON certified, Ispon Member alongside Nebosh, iosh etc.

However, you can still do you Nebosh, iosh or OSHA so that you can get a broader perspective on Safety in addition to the fact that you will be exposed to international best practices when you do the above certification.

ISPON teaches and prepares you to perform well as a safety professional in the Nigerian Clime. Its advisable you go for Ispon now before it becomes hard to get, you trust the Nigerian system. Ispon is backed by the law now, they have bragging rights and are taking steps to ensure people make a living as safety professionals.

As long as you have got your BSc certificate and Nysc certificate you don't have to start from level 1 in ISPON rather you do the general hse and level 3 HSE supervisory course.

The difference between level 1 and 2 and GHSE is that GHSE covers more topics in depth compared to level 1 and 2 that are more like intro to HSE.

To ensure safety in the work place goes beyond having policies, safety signages, standard operating procedures and ppe etc. As we have many companys and organizations with all of those both yet we still have high cases of accidents, incidents and poor staff welfare. Why are organizations still unsafe even with there policy, standard operating procedures and PPE?. The answer is as a result of bad ATTITUDE, LEADERSHIP issues and lack of COMMITMENT to Health Safety and Welfare in the workplace.

The first step to ensuring workplace safety is by having

- Management COMMITMENT to safety, once management is committed to safety then you would have a functioning management system, enhanced safety culture, there will be decrease in accidents and incidents, there will be accountability, responsibility and the Safety professionals will be confident in carrying out his duties.

- Safety is about the people so get every one involved in safety at work place from your staffs, contractors to visitors. " People will always support the change or activity they are involved in". You delegate safety responsibilities to line managers, supervisors, staff and people have to be accountable when it comes to safety. You would need have a safety committee, hold regular safety meetings, seek opinions, suggestions and information from staffs before making changes as regards to safety, rewarding staffs for being safety proactive...Carry everyone along when it comes to safety.

- Research and be up to date with industry standards and laws. Safety has you reading most of the time. To ensure safety in workplace you will have to implement industry safety standards, know about changes or reviews in safety law. For example from June 2016 if your organization handles hazardous chemicals then you should know about the New Global Harmonized system of Hazard communication and for your audits and management system you should be ready to drop OSHAS 18001 for ISO 45001 come 2017. You should also have a good knowledge of the factories act of 1990, employee compensations act as they have guide lines to ensure your workplace is safe and welfare of staffs are catered for.

- Inspection and Supervision. You will have to inspect your work place to identify hazards so you can either eliminate them or put up necessary controls to reduce the risk. You also will supervise your staffs to ensure they are complying with laid down safety rules and work procedures and to also see how effective trainings have been.

- Risk assessment, Hazard Identification and Analysis. The workplace has lots of hazards and one way to eliminate, reduce or control these hazards is by carrying out Risk assessment, Hazard identification and analysis. Depending on your organization you can either carry out Job hazard analysis, change analysis, process analysis or phase analysis. Also note to get your staffs involved in risk assessment and hazard analysis cause you don't know the hazards better than the staffs. Doing so will ensure workplace is safe as you will get a comprehensive risk assessment and hazard analysis. Staffs would be better enlightened about the hazards and be well equipped to carry out there job safely.

- Testing of PPE. If the ppe doesn't fit then its not a ppe. Also ensure ppe is comfortable, adaptable and can allow staffs carry out there work comfortably without ppe contributing to hazard.

- Take you safety statistics serious I.e Loss time injury frequency rate, first aid cases, fatalities, permanent total disability cases, Temporary disability cases, Restricted work cases, Severity cases, etc. These will enable you bench mark, set targets and monitor your HSE performance. On the flip side one proactive way or leading indicator for HSE performance is the rate at which staffs comply to safety rules, perform there jobs as trained, report accidents and be safety proactive.

- Encourage staffs to report hazards, injuries, illness, incidents and accidents it will go along way in helping you find loop holes in your safety management system, reduce the possibility of an incident, do things better and keep your organization from making the headline news for a catastrophic accident.

- Be fast to implement your Hierarchy of Controls. which is Elimination, Substitution, Isolation, Guarding, Safe system of work, Safety work procedures, Adequate supervision, Training, Information and instruction and PPE.

- Remember to carry out inductions, drills, training and retraining. An untrained work man is a hazard on its own. the way and manner work men response to an emergency will determine if that emergency can be controlled, if there will be many injured and many deaths.

- Have safe systems of work in your work place. such as your Lock out and tag out, permits to work for confined space, crane operations, excavations, work at heights, hot works, live electrical works etc.

- Have your safety data sheets available so that work men can have necessary safety information about chemicals or substances they are working with. Safety data sheet goes along way to make our workplace safe as it tells us how best to store hazardous substances, what to do in an emergency, the hazards involved in working with such hazardous substanc, how to dispose of such substance, best way to transport it, the ppe required and more.

You can't totally rid a work place of hazards or make it totally safe cause even after doing all that is reasonably practicable you still have residue risks. Safety is a journey. However nothing should stop you from aiming at zero accidents or incidents. Perfection may not be possible but if you aim at perfection you would arrive at excellence.

All I have stated isn't all you can do to ensure a safe work place. more can still be done we have got community affairs, first aid and cpr, ergonomics, security and environment.

Please anyone who has tried it should tell us if the data zaps.

Even if she was used for rituals you don't know her relationship with that rich man. Please try to have human sympathy and try not to judge others. She is dead now. Respect that.

You should be saying all these to the person who posted the story... We all know what's obtainable and the risks involved in going from one party to another while at school... From the narrator of the main post you would note the kind of party she must have gone too. Even if it wasnt rituals she must have been poisoned or something...We live in a very wicked world and its advisable not to expose yourself to the various wickedness of our time.
