Jobs/VacanciesRe: Sending A Thank You Note After A Job Interview by ziga: 6:48pm On Jul 22, 2008
In Nigeria, where lots of things are done by lobbying, it might seem like you are asking for favors to some people. But professionally, its a courteous thing to do.

Anyway, if the interview went well and you are being considered for the position, the thank you email might do a lot of good. On the other hand, if you are not being considered, you really have nothing to lose.

Send it.
TV/MoviesRe: Denzel Washington Vs. Will Smith (Poll) by ziga: 2:43pm On Jul 19, 2008
In my opinion, it will be very hard to compare will smith and Denzel washinton. Will smith is a young dynamic and superb actor who has not yet reached his peak while denzel has probably already "been there, done that". Right now, Denzel might have many feathers to his cap, but with the potentials will has been showing so far, i think he still has so much room to fly.

Just want people to know that its not as rosy outside the country as lots of people believe,

In the US, preparing for and passing their licensing exam (with very good scores) is just one thing. Getting an interview and finally getting into a residency program is so competitive. There are with lots of medical graduates from different parts of the world hanging on year after year and still getting dissappointed. US resident doctors don't qualify as people earning lots of money and after eventually becoming a consultant, you might not be able to remain in the US because of some immigration laws(most of the visas given for residency training requires that you return to your country of origin).

In the UK and many EU communities, you are only considered if you are a citizen of that country or from any of the other EU countries.

Some other countries(India) don't even pay their doctors during residency (their doctors actually have to pay to work in the hospitals) which explains why there are lots of Indian doctors all over the world.

In the Caribbeans, you may get some medical officer job. Some of them are actually contracts for limited durations meaning you will be let off if they get an equally qualified local.

This is not to discourage anybody planning to leave Naija because despite all these odds a few people still get through "without hanging in limbo". But before leaving you should be convinced that you are actually leaving for something "very much" better than what you are leaving or else you will be really disappointed at the end of the day.
PoliticsRe: Has Fashola Really Done Anything In Lagos State? by ziga: 2:30pm On Jul 17, 2008
Pepeye I can not agree less with you, Government all over the world is about people and people alone. His intentions might be right but like you said his priority is misplaced. So much bravado little impact. Bulldozers has taken over from fire that ravaged markets in Lagos, now it is bulldozer all over the place with a claim that those buildings were illegally constructed.
Speaking about the floods and demolishing

Flooding, a lot of times has to do with poor planning, a problem that has been present for ages, Lots of houses in Lagos have been built along drainage routes, And these houses ought to be removed.
Putting up markets in wrong places, and the huge amount of improperly disposed waste ( i know we will also blame the government for this but when will we stop throwing thrash in the streets and gutters)

Generally in life, you have to destroy in order to create.

It will take a giant to move Lagos forward by an inch, BRF has already move 3 inches forward.

cheesy Yes, i hope to return back home ASAP

The truth is, a lot of people who see only the ills in Naija are just waiting for good things to start happening and they will be on the next virgin Naija flight back home. There's always no place like home.

Right now things are not @ its best but with all the potentials in Nigeria, all i see a giant about to be reborn.

I'll prefer to be a part of that change (even if its a small one) than watch good things happen from far, and then start to rejoice and celebrate with the true winners.

The reason why this kind of thing happens in Naija is the same reason we have been in one spot for the past decades, Corruption, embezzlement of public funds and bad leadership.
sometime ago, a doctor (nigerian) was holidaying in nigeria, the guy has had 20years of experience in brazil, so he said he would give free treatment till he goes back to brazil, but the board of doctors here wont let him because he doesnt have a license or something like that ,
Thats completely normal, and it should be like that in any normal country. You can't practise as a doctor in any country without fulfilling their licensing requirements. He had good intentions, but he should have applied for a license to practise first.
CareerRe: Back To Nigeria After Medical School? by ziga:
@ Poster

You have to write and pass an examination for Nigerians who have foreign medical degrees given by the Medical and dental council of Nigeria, after that you will do 1 year of internship at any approved institution.

The Federal government teaching hospitals pay the most, (almost US$1000 in some of them per month as a house officer) but the pay in private institutions is much less.

After that you will be given a full practicing license, which allows you to work as a medical officer. You will then need to do the compulsory 1 yr NYSC program.

To do residency, you will need to writy the board entrance exams, it is done twice a year in various specialties. and then you'll apply to be a resident in any approved hospital, the salary is a bit higher than it is for house officers.

I think it is a good thing to want to return home after studying outside. The working conditions and pay is not what it should be, but things will definately get better. You should also note that the conditions of service (salary) in Nigeria is better than in many other countries. I can say this from information i've got from many doctors from different parts of the world.
You are right. These are the duties of the government. They have their parts to play, and so do we. We cannot re-vamp the police force but you know what? We can be honest in our own little jobs whatever we do - teaching, buying/selling or even policing. We cannot form strong, efficient legal systems but if someone offers to "dash" us money to do something that's wrong, we can refuse. We cannot form good customs and immigration forces but if we are using the "corrupt" customs force for our business, we can choose to import genuine medicine and authentic goods. We cannot build private airports but if we find ourselves eating something in the "corrupt" airports, we can put our litter in the bins. If there are no bins, we can hold on to our litter until we find one, We can refuse to give bribes to "corrupt" officials at all cost. We cannot reduce the cost of petroleum but when filling our cars at the petrol station, we can refrain from offering the attendants a bribe to fill our tanks for free.
I am 110% behind you. The truth is whenever things go wrong there is always somebody else to blame for it, and in this case it is justified. But that does not excuse some of the bad behaviour by lots of Nigerian people.

The problem with Naija is the people and that includes every corrupt officer and also every person who claims Naija.
RomanceRe: Is Kissing, Fornication? by ziga: 5:18pm On Jul 05, 2008
That type of kissing definately is.
I know that many sins focus on the state of the heart much more than in the act itself. And according to the bible if you look at somebody lustfully, you have already commited fornication with the person.
And that kind of kissing definately begins with and will end with lust (maybe in somebody's bed).

Don't we all want that for our beloved Naija, But i was thinking little changes we can make in our own lifes and possibly in the life of people around us that can push Naija foward.

I wonder what Lagos will be like without so many okadas on the road,

Guilty as charged embarassed
Every Nigerian has contributed in some way to making Nigeria what it is today. In the same way, i believe we all have a responsibility in returning Naija to what it ought to be.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Cowardly Nigerians by ziga: 5:52pm On Jul 04, 2008
I agree that we are all cowards, everybody sits back and waits for "another person pikin" to lead the pack as if if things get better, na all of us go wan chop.

You don't have to do a big thing to make things better, Little things in large numbers have more weight, Why do you think the Niger Delta is not settled till date, A minority of people creating trouble and everybody else sits back.

Abeg instead of waiting, u self find something small to do for our country!!!
Nairaland GeneralWhat Can You Do To Make Naija A Better Country by ziga(op): 5:39pm On Jul 04, 2008
I am tired of listening to people whine about how bad or corrupt Naija is. The people make up the country including each one of you guys,

So, i decided to start this thread. What are you willing to do to make Naija a better place,

From today henceforth, I will stop throwing thrash in the streets, make sure every piece of pure water nylon is properly disposed of and encourage other people to do the same.

Contributions are welcome
If you are informed or what we call being 'Current' in the local parlance, you must have heard of the name SAMUEL ISRAEL that has been in the news lately. The last time I checked, that guy is an American, Caucasian. He duped about $450 million from people under the guise of helping them to invest. I 'll wait for Oprah Winfrey ABC to do a show on him as they do on the so-called Nigerian scammers.

Corruption is not synonymous with Nigeria. Even the Israeli President abi Prime Minister is embroiled in a corruption scandal. Same with Silvio Berlusconi (Italy). The former governor of New York resigned recently over corruption and prostitution racketeering. This is just to mention a few.

I am not holding brief for corrupt Nigerian politicians and their ilks. My point is that corruption is a global problem and should be put into perspective.
As long as devil dey, evil and corruption must dey. The truth is bad things happen everywhere, but the problem with Naija is that everybody does it everyday and it seems to have been accepted as a normal way of life.

The title of your post is contradictory, You can't be born again and still be wicked. But i understand what you mean. Some people claim to be what they are not but only God truly sees the heart.
Sometimes, the most "religious" people in churches do not even believe in Jesus.

May God save us all.
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Declares War On Militants by ziga: 11:50pm On Jun 30, 2008
When two sides are negotiating, it means both parties are willing to compromise something in order to make peace, It is a process that takes time to be complete beacause a lot of times abrupt changes are impossibe (Rome wasn't built in one day)

These Niger Delta millitants obviously are not interested in the progress or development of Niger delta or Nigeria any more.

The Government hasnt taken any drastic measures against them at all and they seem to be getting stronger by the day. Soon, i believe they will declare a Niger Delta republic,

People should not try to tribalize this problem because (everybody feels the pain and suffering in the niger delta) somehow we are all interrelated by marriage or some other thing. Niger deltans also derive benefits from other parts of the country. I am not saying the suffering in the Niger delta is justifiable, but how can you expect a problem of a hundred years to be fixed in 1 year. Besides what kind of development will you expect with the daily violence and instability in that region right now. Investors living in fear that one day they will be kidnapped or even killed.

Nigerians as a whole suffer because of poor governance and greed of leaders. Everybody part of the country suffers from neglect by the government (some more than others, ) and anyone who will not allow for development peacefully should be removed by force.
RomanceRe: The Sexes Are Equal: Not The Same Abilities, But Equal Weight! by ziga: 7:50pm On Jun 30, 2008
@poster
I agree with you completely on this issue.

I interpreted your point of view like this, Corect me if i'm wrong.
Comparing man and woman is like comparing an orange to an apple. They are both fruits which makes them similar, but they do not even have the same taste.

1 orange cant equal 1 apple because they are different units. just like comparing 1 kg to 1 cm.

Despite the differences between our sexes, we should compement each other and are not necessarily inferior to one another because we are clearly different.

But like you said feminism these days doesnt focus on accepting the differnces. Therefore many women try to compete against men eventually changing themselves into men so that they can be on comparative units.
