Gluck4cars: My investigation and industry experience proofs that most cars sold in Nigeria's tokunbo market are salvage titles. Examples are accidented and even flooded, which comes with damaged electrical modules/ecu. So, to that extent your idea is not new. What I think is new is that you want to execute your transactions with full disclosure of the vehicles actual status and also offer advice on were repairs could be procured.
It should be very viable because the vehicles are offered very cheap since they are already written-off by insurance and so very affordable to your buyers. However, you need to check-out how your proposal will fit into Nigerian government's new policy of SON inspection certificate for used imported vehicles (cost N20k). Check SON guideline for what would pass. They are to stop the entry of certain grade of salvaged vehicles.
lets go to basic
really who would imports a car that is a non runner without the idea whats wrong with it ? but as for body damage well that better the car would be running or missing few things that one has seen that there are easy to repair
pragmatistm: The car is year 2000 wagon and engine size is 2.0. CVT transmission.
I recently changed the flywhweel and torgue converter of the car. But the mechanic ignorantly and forcefully cut out the two wires on the connector on dropping resistor on the transmission when he separated engine from transmission during the repair work. The connector got stuck together and we had to remove the connector and join the wires only. The car now drives without selecting the gears. Engine revs at 2200RPM for car speed of 60/70km/h as against 1800RPM for car speed of 90/100km/h before we did the flywheel/ converter replacement. Now when the CVT transmission changes from high gear to low it also immediately goes back to high gear. It will also attempt to change again but immediately, in less than two seconds, goes back to high gear. This can be observed by the engine rpm going down and up again immediately and accompanied with a minor jerk rather staying down for higher speeds. Please what can be done now?
We have drained the transmission oil two times and cleaned the magnetic filters and refill but there still no improvement. The transmission oil is still light red and clean for I changed around six months ago and the car has covered less than 1500km. But please is there any special information on how to place the magnetic filters on the cover of the transmission? Or do they need a replacement?
Please, can driving the car in this state spoil the transmission? I asked because I realized that the car can still accelerate to high speed (100, 120, 130 km/h, etc) in this state.
Your comments are highly appreciated.
what made you change the flywheel and the torque converter ?
yes the gearbox will get damaged if driven in one gear
in1960: Goodday house. My Nissan sunny Car has been having brake issue. I have changed the master brake, brake pads n brake disc still the brake paddle is still free when I press it. The last time d the maChanic bleed the Car only the tire on the driver's side was Catching brake. The Car is front wheel drive. Plz what do I do? Thanks.
one model of car may have different type of based on the average morning temperature hence you find the number 0w, 5w, 10w,15w, 20w etc
that number means the average morning temperature wo whats the point of using 0w in nigeria when the average morning temperature roughly above 7 so using 5w would be ok
some manufactures have one grade that is recommend for all temperatures except for extreme ones
like in this picture before its snap short from a nissan pathfinder 2005 user manual
segunx5: Thanks mayor.anytime it is on d move it stops all of a sudden when on motion. you would need to park and start again. after some distance it repeats d same. And it Flattens any battery that is used with it.
CityNG: I'm not missing the idea and you just think I am.
My opinion still says that this is an unnecessary risk for consumers to take.
It is my intention on this platform to guide and encourage car buyers to avoid ALL salvaged vehicles as a matter of principle. I will do this within the confinements and abiding by the TOS of the site.
Making salvaged vehicles available to consumers is just a bad idea all the way around.
This is one of the reasons why I think the Federal Government should impose a 150% surcharge on all importations of motor vehicles.
PS: I never also said that they were being conned. In fact what I said was "That being said I guess as long as there is full disclosure to buyers and they know what they are getting into then it's okay.".
Allegedly adding 3 more floors to a building designed for two floors without going through the proper protocol was seemingly cheaper too, but we know how that ended. Just because something is cheaper doesn't mean it's better. In fact economic dictates that the alternative is true.
i think you are still missing the point
remember it is the buyer that makes the choice not therefore your option is out of the equation then based on they system of your country eg UK all accident damaged cars are put into category depending with category serious damaged ones are to be retested after being fixed done by the government agent to check and test the repaired work
remember his idea is to sell accident damaged cars as they are and he would recomend you to a good body work shop , he is selling a cars that are not fixed yet
CityNG: Personally I think it's a very bad idea and a disservice to the Nigerian automotive public.
That being said I guess as long as there is full disclosure to buyers and they know what they are getting into then it's okay.
I will never sell or broker a salvaged or reconstructed titled vehicle to my fellow human beings even at their insistence. I don't need money that bad.
With careful shopping a buyer should be able to get a good vehicle that is not salvaged for a good price but our people are greedy. It seems that everybody wants a 2010 Honda Accord with a salvaged titled rollbacked mileage instead of say a 2005 clean title from the original owner with verifiable care of ownership.
you are missing the idea
buying a salvaged car is always cheaper and those who buy they would have done the maths i.e expenses to put it back on the road and it always cheaper as compared to fully driving one
Remember the seller is selling the car in its damage form and the buyer will access whether the car can be put back into the road within targeted budget
the buyer is not being conned, they make decision on what they see
nurey: Hello gurus of nairaland, my toyota sienna passenger side back wheel isn't rolling instead, it is dragging after removing the hand break, I noticed a kind of weight on the back and when I accelerate, the tire drags and my car slowly responds to acceleration.
The mecho I called just removed the tire, hammered the disk off it and scraped the brakes and told me it is because of water, please can gurus in the house shed more light on this and how to avoid its reoccurence.
thats a simple issue
it depends with type of mechanism you have for the hand brake, brake shoes or it works with caliper
the shoes or caliper is not releasing, as for shoes they just need ajusting i.e make it loose a bit more, if it is the caliper, you need penetrating fluid to make it loose, if it doesnt it means it has ceased and needs changing
I use Opel vectra B, 1999 model. my engine was very dirty So I went to a car wash and wash the engine. After the wash the engine start but was not sounding well or moving as it used to. The plugs was removed one after The other and The water was blew out. After that The engine refused to start and when it managed to start after much effort it will be vibrating but after 5-10minutes it will be stable but the moment I engage the gear to R or D( reverse or Drive) the engine will go off.
I have done all I can for 10 days now the car will not start at first kick and if it manage to start after much effort it will not move a yard before going off.
Please, I need help.
Thanks.
you messed up by washing the engine without covering sensitive sensors
never wash an engine without the guide to know which parts need to be covered from water
when you say dirty do you mean dust or grease and oil ?
your need to be scanned to see if any codes are stored and also if the machine is a bit advanced run a live test, gettting the readings while the car is running
tallboo: Hello! I am using a toyota camry and the front bumper touches the ground while driving on a bad road. It came with a 16 inch rim already. Tyre specification is this- P205/ 65/ R16. What are the possible ways to solve the issue? The tyres are still new.....
cocoduck: I need information on buying OBDII scanners, I have scoured the internet and I am a bit confused, I saw on amazon, Chinese knock offs and professional ones and going through the reviews people said the Chinese knock offs works as good as the 'professional' ones because they work with torque pro, what should I do? and please which one supports all the protocols and what is ELM whatever whatever? Please reply quickly.
go for the one you want to use for the intended purpose eg you just want a code
or the one that does other test eg ABS, Airbag, live monitoring etc
Abduletudaye: Congrats bro.. I pray you buy a bigger car soon..
Just make sure you top the oil 3 months interval, always replace the radiator water weekly.. Try to gauge the tries after a month...try not to use your fuel till it gets to the reserve... Enjoy your new whip..
this is rubbish
1st thing first you need just to monitor becoz all is due to distances you cover eg per week or month
then also then comes the condition of the engine etc
the best is to monitor eg weekly and the results you get from monitoring, makes you decide whether to top up or not
Eduu50: Good day my people. I am not a frequent contributor of posts here but I am an ardent follower. I hope some of you will take some time to read through this and possibly prefer a solution. I must also say that I have thoroughly gained very useful information here.
So here's the thing, I have a euro accord 2004 icdti and this car hasn't moved atall in 2 months. Problem started when I took the car to have the timing chain changed(possibly the biggest mistake I have made in recent memory). I thought this was a simple job that any experienced mechanic could handle but boy was I wrong. Car refused to come to life after the change. The biggest problem is the ignorance of every mechanic that I have managed to discuss this problem with. I am not an expert but I do know a thing or two or better still Google is always handy. I have tried to change the injectors, but apparently again, the guys here do not know how to change correctly the injectors in a modern diesel engine car. The car started but there was diesel in the exhaust and after some time it wont start anymore. This was after we ran the diagnosis on the car and the error codes indicated that the injectors need changed. 8 still do feel it's the injectors but then before I try anything further I need to get someone that can do modern diesel engines.
I need help. I need to find someone in this country that understands this engine and that can fix this problem. The guys in lapido are advising that I change the engine to a petrol engine but I love this engine and it would be nice if I can have this fixed.
If you can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it a lot. A brother needs help. Please do not hesitate to assist if you can. Thank you for your time.
kenmaro: Ofcourse i do. I have used this method and i was able to flush and replace all my old tranny fluids. You could google it up too. Also, you could use fluid exchanging machines to power flush and change all the old fluids completely though it's more expensive but it's available in selected outlets in Lagos.
flushing and completely draining are two different things
the guy asked about completely draining the converter which cant be be done unless the gearbox and engine are seperated
flushing is a simple adding and drain untill the the oil dilutes the dirty or old hence the reason we recommend flushing 3 to 4 times
thats why also we have to figures for transmission fluid, one is for flushing then the other one is a for complete overhaul, the the overhaul it is more than of the flush because the torque
thaqib: I changed my 2000 camry brake pads last week and since then, have noticed the car vibrates when I apply the brake while on top speed say 70/80 km/hr This is a fresh development. Is d pad fake or what's d problem Pls help o..
adanny01: This evening, I was driving through a street in Uyo. The street was just enough for two cars side by side but not for 3 especially while driving. I was doing like 20km/hr with my headlights at Lo (dipped beam) as i usually do on streets with street lighting or on that low speed. There were cars parked but the devil himself was approaching at an estimated speed of 30km/hr with his headlights on Hi (full beam). Lucky for me, our estimated point of passage had no cars parked so i estimated that at our current speed, it was very safe for both of us.
Rather unfortunate, since Mr Devil had his lights in good condition and on Hi, it was irritating to me. So i toggled my lights to Hi and back to Lo and waited 2 secs expecting him to dip his beam in response. There was non since i was dealing with the devil himself. I thought of doing what i sometimes do, i did it i.e i switched my lights to Hi and lets see who has better lights since i was driving a high SUV with excellent lights that immitated the sun. Of course i knew mine was better.
His reaction was one that was only expected of the devil himself and at this point we were close. Mr D toggled his lights from Hi to Lo and back to Hi in a second then moved further into my lane at the middle coming at his maintained speed. 2 meters from an imminent collision i swerved heading for the open drainage while applying brakes. I stopped at the edge of the drainage while he brushed my car starting from the rear fender flares to my rear bumper increasing in intensity. Mr Devil had done his worst still driving up the road at the middle without looking back, slowing down or at least braking. He joined the dual carriage way (Ikot ekpene rd) which was where i was coming from and speed off while i rushed out to 'nurse my wounds'. Mr D drove a '93 or there about Nissan Sunny painted in the township taxi colours of Akwa ibom st. If not for the difference in height of the two cars, my loss (he won) would have been gross.
Lesson learnt, NEVER TO DARE THE DEVIL HIMSELF ON OUR NEXT MEETING.
you played stupid with your life
a common thing with africa based drivers, there is no "courtesy driving" i.e stopping and letting the other driver pass through
we do it here UK on daily basic, streets would be full of cars both sides and out of courtesy one drivers slows down and signals (flashing of he headlights)the other driver to proceed, while the other driver waits and then the priority given drivers then sends a gesture of saying thank you
pragmatistm: he told me that after he brought out the engine when he opened the area of the engine and transmission, the torque converter came down on its own. He explained that certain locks in it that should hold it were bad.
are you saying the converter wasnt bolted to the flywheel ?
pragmatistm: Finally, my new mechanic came yesterday and I directed him according to your guidelines. He went under the car and asked me to crank the car which I did. With that he confirmed that the flywheel was bad.He towed the car to his workshop and started removing the bolts to bring out the engine. This evening he called me after bringing out the engine and gear and upon getting there, he showed me that the flywheel was badly damaged. Also that the converter was bad.,the crankshaft sensor has be badly bent and one piece of aluminium on the engine has also been badly choped by the broken flywheel.
Now,we can get the flywheel and the piece of aluminium from the old engine. That leaves the converter and crankshaft sensor.People please give me an idea of how much I can get each of this parts at Ladipo market, Lagos.
But please how can we determine whether the converter is bad? I ask because I still drove the car to my house last thursday before it finally refused to start. Thanks.
I attached some pics of the bad flywheel, converter and part of the engine in question.
what made him conclude that the converter is bas when he hasnt opened it
kenmaro: You could drain the fluid in torque converter but if your car mileage is above 80k, i will advice you just do normal drain, filter change, and refill. Flushing or power flushing high mileage trannys sometimes results to the tranny malfuctioning after the flush especially if the tranny atf has not been changed at anytime. After the normal drain, filter change, and refilling you have done, locate the hose outlet line taking atf from the tranny to the radiator cooler line, remove the clamps on the hose. Set a catch bowl underneath the car at the point of the hose, have someone to start the car, unplug the hose and put the gear in drive, old/dirty atf will start pumping out through the hose. Be very observant, as the dirty atf comes out you will notice it becomes cleaner gradually until you observe a more clean and translucent atf coming out then shut the engine and plug the hose back with the clamps attached properly and gauge the tranny atf. You could get the old/dirty atf (about a litre) trapped in the torque converter out through this method.
Amefrica: US has one head of state and he's the same as the head of government, while Britain has them separately the head of state is the monarch while the head of government is the Prime Minister (appointed by the queen) which is the leader of the party. Him and his ministers are collectively accountable to the monarch, when a minister messes up the whole cabinet is responsible.
A President can be impeached and a cabinet can be dissolved too - the Prime Minister can be thrown out with "vote of no confidence". When a President get impeached no minister follows him, but when a Prime Minister gets voted out (no confidence), he leaves with his ministers.
In my own layman view, any government that provide security and concerned about the social welfare of its citizenry is a good government. Any govt that doesn't do so, the citizens have the power to vote him out during the next election and/or maybe revolt against the government.
Unlike Authoritarian States, where government are kinda less-concerned about their citizens, maybe because they don't rely on the citizens to get to where they are..
So far, so good US and Britain & Canada rock.
the queen does apoint a prime minister, the prime minister becomes one after winning elections, the queen does a ceremonial duty as if she has appointed one but the prime minister comes from the winning party and usually it is the leader of the party
the queen as no powers at all
most people outside UK get confused with this, the queen is just a ceremonial head just keeping there history of kings and queen but plays no role in politics
the british monarch is more like a british pride to show the world and also a tourist attraction
i wanted him see the converter its self and its shape, that would help him to understand why its not possible drain all the oil in the converter without seperating the gearbox from the engine and get out the converter
domack99: Am Planning to change my MDX ATF and am just wondering if the entire fluid in the trans system can be drained by just opening the drain nut under. A friend change his ATF recently and all we did was to remove the drain nut and left it for about one and half hour to drain. We got a whole four gallon paint bucket filled up and some drain to a bigger bowl that could fill more than a litre bottle. The amount of old fluid drained would be up to six litre plus. We replaced with five litres of AFT, though it gauge to the desire level when measure with the deep stick but what i could deduce is that more was taken out of the tranny than replaced
My concern is, is it possible to have drained the content of the torque converter using this straight method because from what i learn, the SUV take five litres of ATF or still need special equipment to flush out the system to get to the torque converter.
the only way to change the oil in the converter is to separate the gearbox from the engine and take out the converter eampty it and refill
thats the reason why garages we flush 3 or 4 times flush of the gearbox oil, the reason is the more you flush the more you dilute fresh oil the converter
patlead: my mechanic was working on my car and left my car key in his tools box. today he called and said it was missing, the car is currently at a friends house and i dont know what to do. the car is a 2002 ford focus..what can i do?
i think you are being conned
1st off all remove fuel pump use or any fuse that stops the car from starting thats avoid the car being stolen
did you leave the keys by mistake or in his care ?
if you left the keys by mistake then its your own faulty you have to find people who reprogram an new key or get a full set of an ecu with key and door locks
maxit2: Hello, My 08 Range Sport(Supercharged) was working fine until i had a fuel-pump problem. I changed the fuel-pump,8-plugs,brake bulbs and serviced the injector. The car started and all cylinders were firing well.
However, after this installation i observed the car was not balanced. The dashboard was showing almost all the errors.
1. HDC fault system unavailable 2. Special programs unavailable 3. ABS 4. BRAKE (red light) 5. A yellow sign that probably means the car isn't stable(balanced) 6. One or two other yellow signs. BUT no engine or oil sign.
Now the suspension buttons are not working. The terrain selection button(To select stuff life, granite, smooth road, mud, e.t.c) is also not working. The button for (Hill Descend) doesn't respond. It just constantly shows that the car is descending down a hill. Sometimes, the car alarm(Panic) just goes on even when there is no cause for alarm.
I am NOT from Lagos, so far i have taken the car to two major auto-electricians in my small city. They have tried and it's still not working.
Has anyone encountered or heard of this problem before ? Any recommendations ? Should i bring the car to Lagos ? is there a guarantee that it can be fixed there ? Is there an official LandRover dealer shop in Lagos ?
what made you change the fuel pump and service the injectors ?
from my personal experience here in uk we dont service the injectors i assume its becoz the fuel is much cleaner hence they never clog
i assume that nigerian fuel is bit dirty, since i always here the servicing of injectors but even though the injectors would be the last place to touch i would start with fuel filter, not point to service the injectors, when you have changed the dirty oil filter
here in UK, the basic we buy a chemical that we pour in the fuel tank and it cleans the injectors as shown in the photos
for now take off the battery for an hour or overnight and see if it resets some of the things
