chikasin4: Zim drill do hv anybody dat drives dat car, pls tell m where d no is located. I hv locked for it taire
the older the car the hard to find the engine number since most engines numbers would on a sticker
there is a difference between engine number, engine type number, engine code number
engine number is useful mostly to the manufacturer as they trace which engine was put on which car during production and eg engine WE120 TO WE121005 where faulty they check which cars got those engines and they recall them since every engines has number and that number is married to the vin number of the car it was put in though the engine number is not found on the long vin number and also the engine number is not embeded into car's body becoz the engine can be changed during the life span of a car
engine type number is found within the vin number just tells you the model of the engine they put in depending on many things eg engine size turbo or none turbo, supercharged etc
then the engine code number useful when you change the engine you use that engine code number to get the same engine replacement or even parts of that engine if there are different types of that some engines on the same model of the car.
vin number is the car its self whether with or without the engine
an engine can be put into another so keeping its number is useless and and engine can be made from more one engine after salvaging parts from un running ones
a vin number can not be salvage you either use one from an existing one and it has to be the same made and model or create one that will later turn to none existing (if car data based is computerised and checked against the database)
How many passports nigerians must have ? You talk of international Passport is there national passport As far as i know a passort doesnt need to be called international passport
The different in passport is diplomatic and ordinary passort
Cuzz: My golf 3 doesnt select gear One again and whenever I put it on drive it wont move bt rather be making noise as i press the trottle, other gears are all ok. Is my gear Box dead?
if there is no engine management then thats a sign that your clutches aka (fibre) are gone
omodapson: Which car manufacturer do you think has consistently made the most brilliant cars? We have quite a lot of them but some have really standout. For me, I will list the following car manufacturers. They are listed in no particular order.
1. Mercedes-Benz - The list of great cars is endless...
2. BMW - They wow us with brilliant cars
3. Audi - One of the biggest luxury auto makers in the world and they have consistently produced top notch vehicles
4. Land Rover - Think of off road, ... think Land Rover
5. Jaguar - The pride of the British but I can't say of recent times
6. Ferrari - They have made a name for themselves in the hyper super car world
7. Lamborghini - Their cars have been brilliant!
8. GM - A rep for the Americans
9. Toyota - They have been giving the Europeans a run for their money
10.Aston Martin - I couldn't resist mentioning this. They have always been taking the world by storm.
Other cars manufacturers I would love to have in my list are Buggatti, VW, Ford and Koenissegg. Let's see yours...
sultaan: OP, you are talking about people who think Toyota comes from heaven.
We learn from event, and issues a lot of people have things to learn its just not going to be cheap/free.
Mechanics in the west go through college, and when you try to advise car owners some are far gone with what their mechanic says they can't even understand that the car is telling them the problem with the check engine light.
No mechanic in the west will dare try to repair without pulling the diagnostic codes first unless its a maintenance work.
You will notice most will pay the mechanic to mess the car up first before they come online for a miracle instead of searching online first before going to a mechanic with an understanding of what needs to be done.
I think we should teach them to google/ search the internet 1st and get an idea what is wrong with car and go to the mechanic with a knowledge of what might be wrong especially electrics and chech engine light
my the way WHAT IS AN REWIRE is that an auto electrician or based on the name someone who just wait to rewire and electrical problem ?
erico2k2: Im sure I replief to this, was my post deletef? The most accurate way to do the mesurement of the quantity of oil needed for ones car is via ur deep stick, the ammount on the user manual is overal capacity,so wen feeding oil to ur car after draining, use the dip stick to gauge it.Here in the Uk one of the first question the examiner ask U is how do U check your engin oil level.if ur answer is Check user manual Op its a fail.
you are missing the point
knowing the your engine oil capacity makes easy when buying the oil when doing service you get to know the actual litres you want than wasting time up and down when you buy less or extra when you return
the thread was about the engine oil capacity than check the level of oil which already in the engine
Ikenna351: I don't recall the position of the headrest, but yes, do car had headrest.
The impact pushed head forward and backward, via the work of seatbelt. Imagine you are hit from behind with a big force and a belt tied you to a chair, with your neck free from the belt. The head unit (radio set) jumped/pulled out of the dashboard where it was screwed and fell unto the gear lever, to tell you how the impact was. I didn't even feel the neck pain until the day after or so. It was when I got back to Abuja the 3rd day that the pain became unbearable.
You see, you can all stay here and argue with whatever your books tells you, but I saw what happened that day, what caused it, how it happened, what it did to me and the outcome. All that because I was the VICTIM. I saw everything from the beginning to the end via the rearview mirrior. I got to the pump, slowed down, pulled out the gear stick from the 2nd gear and was about to shift it to the 1st gear to climb the bump, when I now looked at the rearview mirror and saw the disaster coming to happen before my eyes. I saw the SUV at high speed closing behind me and realised it was going to happen. I could tell from the engine note that the brake was not applied at the distance between us at the speed it was coming. Quickly, I left the gear stick in the neutral and took my feet off the pedals. It was too late by the time he pushed the brake. His wheels would have locked, considering the speed he was doing when he tried to stop the car (to prove that his ABS was working well). No noise of wheel locked of any kind. He started steering the SUV nose out to the left side (meaning the ABS working for him to steered the vehicle and it responded). Unsuccessfully, the right side bumper guard (close to right headlight) crashed onto the left rear side of the car I was driving. If I had shifted the stick to the 1st gear and apply brake when it happened, it would have been something all together. Even if I had come out with no scratch, other than the neck pain, the damage to the car would have made the car unmovable at that spot. The ABS gave him the room to steer the car completely into the other lane to prevent hitting the car, but the thinking distance was poor; he started steering when it was too late, because of over confidence of what his AUTOMATIC brake can do. And yes, the road in question is a very smooth road. Those that ply that road will know the road am talking about that is about 60-80 km with bumps at every 3-10 km.
I didn't start this topic to convince anyone, but simply to tell how I was a victim of Nigerians interpretation of ABS and it's misuse. Anyone who is in doubt can still carry out a test and come back and prove me wrong. Just find a parked truck, tractor or bulldozer on a smooth surface road. Push your car to the limit, get too close and hold your brake pedal to the floor for the ABS to come and hold it there. And please, don't steer the wheel, just hold it steady, since the ABS is supposed to stop the car before it gets to the Tractor. After all, understanding ones vehicle braking distance means nothing, as far as ABS is concerned.
Ikenna.
your are not here to convince anyone but to share your knowledge never tire to share
Ardenb: Hi please help..... Recently, when I activate my turn signal flasher to left or right, it triggers both flashers instead of one thereby indicating emergency/hazard instead of a left/right turn. My emergency/hazard activator is working just fine meanwhile.. What could be the cause and possible fix? The car is a toyota camry..
this once happened to me but it was after i installed a remote start and from the remote start there is one wire (+) that is supposed to be connected to the turning signal/blinker aka your signal flasher/trafficator signal light
the central locking system from the remote start would send a 12 volts signal and the all the turning lights would flash when press unlock/lock and when i remote start the car that worked fine but the turning signal where doing like you mentioned i ended up disconnecting that 12 volts wire from the remote start kit
this was from HONDA CR V 2 litre 1998 model but the same configuration had worked on HONDA CR V 2001
so i suspect that there is touch somewhere or just check your fuses
elektra80: I think u are contradicting urself. First u said abs has nothing to do with braking distance, now u said though it helps in reducing braking distance. My point is still valid.. ABS helps in reducing braking distance.. whether its the main function of abs or not that is a different topic.
like i said before it was never invented to reduce breaking distance since breaking distance can be affected by many things eg weather and surface of the road
the reason why car manufacturers never mention the breaking distance on ABS is because it misleads people thinking that one can over speed and brake late and ABS will help with breaking distance, which is dangerous and weather and road surface play a major and that breaking distance will be lost
remember the breaking distance is affected by road conditions especially in grave road, wet road, ice road and then your tyres etc braking distance is affected by these even when ABS kicks in
icemann: I cannot believe you typed this . Basic physics knowledge of motion tells you friction is need to stop. And don't believe everything you see online.
When you skid you have very low coefficient of friction. You need friction to stop and the traction for control of the car. So tell me how does NO traction help in breaking and maneuvering?
ABS system gives the breaking fluid a pulse like motion when its applied. The pulse gives intermittent grip same idea of pumping your break. The idea comes from the inverse reation ship of heat and friction ie the hotter an object the less the friction. When your break locks the disc are to hot the pad almost glides on it (reason for the invention of ventilated brake disc).
I hope this helps you understand more on ABS
remember there is function and then benefits
so the function of the ABS is to not the let the car lock in one direction and overcoming wheel spins
the benefit is reducing braking distance but thats depends on the type of surface
elektra80: ok u posted a video, but did u actually watch it? Watch it again and focus on 2:30 (2 mins 30 secs) and tell me if abs doesn't SIGNIFICANTLY reduces braking distance. So much misinformation on this thread.
the function of ABS is not reducing breaking distance but making you able to steer away from danger
Mlud: A lot of explanations here on how ABS works. Some are correct but there are also some misconceptions on the effect of ABS brakes when driving. I am with lolomike on this. I have driven cars equipped with and without and after a scary experience 10 years ago vowed never to own another car without ABS.
Anti-lock/Anti-skid brakes (ABS) work to reduce the braking distance experienced by drivers in an emergency when immediate braking assistance is needed. It works best when you stamp on the brake pedal and keep your foot on it to bring your vehicle to a much quicker stop. The pedal pulsates and kicks back at your foot which shows that the ABS is working. This quick pulsating action fools or confuses some drivers into taking their foot off the pedal as they instinctively think something is wrong. That is the reaction that increases the braking distance as the brakes stop working when you take your foot off the brake pedal. ABS was never designed to elongate the braking distance to allow you to steer out of trouble. This belief is wrong. ABS will only elongate the braking distance in poor or uneven road surfaces or in wet and also icy road conditions. ABS works best on dry straight roads. ABS will still work within vehicle tolerances and road conditions but also road speed. It will never defeat nor ignore the law of physics. That's why many badly informed drivers speed above the limits allowed by traffic conditions and certainly above their driving competence and expect ABS to save them from the cemetery like the Sequoia driver who crashed into the OP. He's lucky he got away with just begging the OP. Sadly he drove away non the wiser.
in simple english ABS has nothing to do with braking distance but it enables the car to be steered in any direction during braking since the wheels wont be locked in one direction
Ikenna351: Tokunbo is an aka for 2nd hand, but foreign used. After reading the abuse we dish out on cars in Nigeria, will you still think that a 2nd hand Nigerian used and a 2nd, 3rd or 4th foreign used car will be the same?
Even if a car is bought brand new in Nigeria and later put for sale as 2nd hand car, a lot of Nigerians would still prefer 4th hand used foreign one to it.
Ikenna.
i get what you are saying but whats thats got to do with problems of a cars that infor doesnt help a mechanic at all
there is no need to mention that the car is a used one 2nd etc just get to the point eg my volvo s40 2001 2.0litre is having this problem
jjjkkkooo: I notice that the car jerks and revs itself while accelerating. I just changed the 8 plugs and serviced the nozzles. It is 2006 models. The mechanic says the gear oil is ok. Sometimes the 'D' blinks and I ve to stop and restart. And it will be ok. But the jerking and revving Persists. Any help?
to accelerate is to rev to higher revs
when you say it revs while you accelerate what you you mean ?
Ikenna351: Sometime this year (not quite long), I bought a tokunbo vehicle for someone in Abuja and drove it down to Anambra state to deliver the car to the owner. While into the journey, between Lokoja and Enugu, I took a bypass, that cut some kilometres off the journey. The road have some bumps, before you get to Otupka, Benue state. I got to a bump, slowed down and was about climbing it, I viewed my reaview mirror, as I always do. I saw a Toyota Sequoia V8 4WD 1st Generation, heading towards my tail on top speed. Before I could say jack, the SUV smashed my vehicle and pushed it off the road.
The impact was so terrible that it threw out the radio set out. I came down and checked. The rear of the car I was in was in terrible bad shape while the Sequoia's Bumper and bumper guard was in bad shape too, but the bumper guard was a written enough. I met 2 occupants in the Sequoia, a driver and the car owner, a madam. The driver was begging, claiming he thought the brake could catch as he was getting too close to me but the brake disappointed him as he applied the brake. This was a tokunbo car I bought for someone and he hasn't seen the vehicle for the first time and someone, out of carelessness created this terrible mess for me. What a situation!
We were in the middle of no-where, so there was nothing both of us could do there arguing or playing stubborn. We still had about 4 hours drive to get to Enugu from that spot. Luckily, we were both going to Anambra state and the woman final destination was Awka. But I would have to take the car to Coal Camp Enugu to fix the car, since I couldn't just take the car in that shape to the owner. She begged me heaven and Earth to take what she have on her to take to Enugu and fix the vehicle. I had no option than to take whatever she gave me and continued the journey with the car in a very terrible shape. I had to sleep in Enugu a night to replace, panel beat and re-sprayed the car rear. Luckily, the owner of the understood, but a terrible experience am not sure I will forget. I suffered neck pain for close to a month because of that incident.
My point in the above story is about how Nigerians define ABS and misuse it as such. The driver believed that ABS of the car would reduce the braking distance. For that he continued on the high speed till he got too close, only to realise how wrong he was. Most times, you hear Nigerians telling you his/her car's braking distance is so good because it has ABS. But to the best of my knowledge, if you understand how ABS works, you will believe with me that ABS doesn't necessarily reduce the braking distance, rather it will likely increase the distance to help the driver steer away from hitting an object, since it prevents any wheel from locking when brake pedal is fully depressed. The driver's thinking distance was poor because he didn't understand that vehicle's braking distance.
ABS wheel sensor senses a wheel about to lock, signals to ABS ECU and the ABS ECU via the ABS controller/pump reduces the pressure of fluid going to that wheel to release and prevent it from locking, so that the front wheels can still steer, while the brake system still try to get the car to a halt. I do not see reduction in braking distance here.
Because of this wrong ABS definition by Nigerians, you see a lot of Nigerians driving recklessly in the city, telling you "My Car has ABS. No shaking!" Yet you see scratches and batches on the car here and there. Some taken so much body filler that you can't tell the model of the car of the car anymore since it has gone out of shape.
In the city, I craw when am behind the wheel. Some forum members who have been in my car will explain better. They will overtake and curse me for crawling and slowing them down. But who cares? When I don't even hear the rubbish coming out of their mouth, since my windows are always up with my music entertaining me. But whenever I steer into expressway, catch me if you can, unless am not in the mood.
Yes, I craw in the town because I do not want to give you the room to come and bash me. Because when fly off in the city, they would fly behind you. But their brake system may not be as good as yours or they may not understand their cars braking distance and when you suddenly apply your brake and stop, they will hit you from behind. We see that happen everyday. So, I don't need to talk more on that. But mostly happen because "My car get ABS" which will affect their thinking distance and make poor judgement about their cars breaking distance.
If you have a driver driving you, be very firm on how they drive you or your car, even when you are not around. Because whatever trouble they cause with that car, it's on your head. I knew how much the woman cuffed out that day for me to use in fixing the vehicle, which at the end of the day, was not even close to the amount I spent in fixing the car. Sometimes, you see some mad people driving recklessly in town. When you peeped in, they would drivers, alone without their Ogas. But when they hit other people's vehicles, the Ogas will have to come and bail out his vehicle and settle the victims of the incidents. Am not even talking about when they send Pedestrians to mortuary. My point is, try and educate them about car brake system, especially the wrong ABS interpretation and misuse.
Yes, their may be other brake systems installed in the recent cars to improve the over all braking distance. But understanding your car's brake system will help your thinking distance and finally, the over all stopping distance of the vehicle.
Ikenna.
Automatic Braking System killed me
why is that most nigerians here mention where they bought the car as part of the description eg "tokunbo vehicle"
biggiyke: your car has too many plugs. i guess that's why it's revving itself. my advice to you is this; remove four of the plugs. drive it for awhile and tell us what you notice different.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9foaj6Q-gE if the gearbox has a sump like this in the video then it is easy to replace the filter all you need is to take off sump panel and you will see the filter and you dont need to take off the gearbox from the car
then check this gearbox from honda cr v it doesnt have the panel sump these are the types i was saying dont even bother to let a none automatic specialist touch your gearbox, becoz once you want to change oil filter on such gearbox it becomes a gearbox overhaul
dsunmade: I drive a manual 1998 Toyota Avensis, 1.8 liter petrol engine. Anytime I top up or fill up the ac coolant and drive, it drags the engine. The acceleration slows significantly and I often have to switch off the AC while attempting some race car maneuvers. Is this normal or is it a symptom of an underlying problem? Thanks for your candid, well-informed advice.
Is your AC aftermarket or the original from manufacturer ?
erico2k2: Change the soloniod n master governor plus the filter and use required fluid
You can not rush to change the solenoid without knowing which one to change this is usually through a code
Then on the filter it depends with type of gearbox some you have to open the whole gearbox to get to the filter of which if the mechanic is a automatic specialist thats fine to open if s/he is not please dont try it
But some gearbox are easy to get access to the filter you just open a cover
car-doctor: Everybody on the forum seems to have a solution to your problem but none has worked so far.
The real issue could be your drive shaft ABS ring gear. Its either broken or not in full contact with the ABS sensor. This will typically cause the type of problem you complained about and I'm talking from experience. You could end up changing ABS pump and sensors without results.
Start by checking the ABS ring gears first.
If you are in Abuja, feel free to bring the car into our workshop and I will help you check it up.
Car-Doctor.
through experience a broken ABS rings wont cause such problems but an ABS light on the dashboard
You seem to have a disc that has not worn out unevenly therefor when you press he brakes, the brakes put more pressure were the uneven surface is at its deepest point then it puts less pressure were it is less worn out and this is translated into vibration and your pedal is pushed back when brakes pad reaches the spot which is not much worn out, then it goes down again when the brakes pads get to the most worn out place, since it need more pressure to grip that section
Just change both brakes pads and disc, also ask the to check how much thickness is left on the disc am sure you will shocked that there is no much left
Cuzz: my mechanic told me that after replacing a gear box that it should be scanned and programned bf using it. Some mechanics are guilty of that according to him coz am nt a mechanic.he did d same to my vehicle and i thot he just wnted me to waste my money bt later found out that he was right.
gearbox dont need programming it is a straight swap
remember when you swap gearbox your ECU(aka brainbox) for transmission remains in your car, it is somewhere in your not attached to the gearbox after swap you reconnect all the sensors to car's wire harness and those wires connect the ECU
so whats there to program as if you bought a different ECU for the gearbox?
bencham: The check engine sign on my Honda Civic 2000 just started showing this morning when i was about going to work. What could be the possible reason?
check engine means the car needs scanning, when scanned a code will be pulled out by the scanner and it will point where the problem is
jascopassion: Hello fellow landers,it will be my joy to hear from you all abt some driving rules in this country. Also, as a learner, what are those things one needs to be mindful of? Lastly, what are the 1st things to check when a car suddenly derives problem while you are on a journey and easy check solution to those problems?
dont you have the so called HIGHWAY CODE in nigeria
every country should have their own and thats were you read all the road rules and donts
