Travel / My Nigerian Experience – Ljiljana Kostic, A Serbian Living In Nigeria by magazineguy(m): 9:32am On Sep 12, 2019
It is a general knowledge that countries outside of the African continent receive very biased, skewed and limited information; and therefore, have inadequate knowledge about what life is really like here. The western world is fed with images of poverty, epidemics, crime, underdevelopment and just a glance of beautiful Safaris and animals.

When I decided to relocate to Nigeria, the unpleasant images dominated my expectation. To my greatest surprise, Nigeria demystified those stereotypes. The beauty of its complexity and diversity is enchanting and breathtaking. Nigeria has it all! Living here is akin to exploring several countries at once.

There is nothing you can’t find in Nigeria! From the ancient tribes living in huts to the lavish modern houses, the fanciest cars, the highest levels of education…Nigeria is endowed with mountains, beaches, rainforest, desert, amazing nature, and diverse people; Creative youths, the most beautiful fashion, nightlife, culture, incredible arts…Nigeria has it all! Nigeria is a country of contrasts.

I must confess that I was amazed at my first arrival in the capital, Abuja; what a beautiful city! It really is no different than any European capital or city in the United States of America. It is a place with opportunity for all. I am amazed to see how people from every part of Nigeria, ranging from different States, cultures, tribes, religions live in peace and harmony. I was also surprised that the city donned with so many architectural styles that you get overwhelmed with a feeling of traversing several continents at once. I learned that previous governments contracted western and local companies to design and develop the Abuja; Asians, Turkish, American and other nationalities equally contributed towards the creation of this first-class city.

My initial plan was to stay in Nigeria for a year, but I quickly became “trapped” by Nigerian “magic”. The stories of Nigerian history, tribes, culture, beliefs and languages lured and enticed me. The beautiful nature, amazing arts, and creativity have become a part of me. In Abuja, I get to enjoy arts, theatre, fashion shows, supermarkets, dining, and business but also still be part of Nigerian culture, traditions, and history.

What I definitely love the most about Nigeria are the people! Happy Nigerian people! The people are welcoming and have accepted me as their own and are always happy to help, chat, work with and interact with me. In their usual hospitable nature, they have given me a Nigerian name, a title and taught me everything about their customs and traditions. The resilient Nigerian people, who no matter what happen in their country, remain strong, positive, faithful and happy. The strength and resilience of Nigerian people are immeasurable; their tenacious belief is so fascinating that they can certainly teach other nationalities a thing or two about persistence.

I am often asked why I love Nigeria. How is one supposed to answer that question? It is just like being asked why you love your husband, or mother or a best friend. All the things we love have faults, but we love them despite. We see something in them that others don’t. We love the way they make us feel. I love the smell of Nigeria. I can’t explain the smell, but I know I love it. I love how green it is and all the incredible, unknown sorts of trees and plants that grow here despite the intense heat during the dry season. I love the laugh of its people, their songs and the way they dance even when there is no music playing. I love the colours of their traditional clothes as much as I love the colours of the sky above Nigeria- always new, unexpected, perfect blends. I love the loud and exciting way Nigerians celebrate God, full of faith, but are still afraid of “juju” magic. Nigerian people are warm, loving, caring and full of life. There are so many intelligent, creative and talented people here, it is amazing!

I have found a second home here. Nigeria and its people have given me so much and I always try to give back as much as possible.

Health / The 7 Strangest Diseases Ever by magazineguy(m): 11:22am On Aug 27, 2019
There are healthcare inventions in the world that have been able to combat and eradicate different diseases, ailments and infections. Not even the fear and fatality of cancer has been discovered but the perseverance to pass through chemotherapy can be the bravest steps of tumorigenic patients beating cancer and its wrath. Nevertheless, there are still some deadly diseases out there:

AIDS

It’s been more than 25 years that the first patient of the Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome was tested positive and the world’s brightest scientists and researchers have failed to find a cure asides minor hopes that were presented to the world

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

As people age, especially old athletes that engaged in contact sports forgetfulness has been identified in most old people. Till now, there is no known cure for this nervous system disorder.

COMMON COLD

Cough, headache and running nose are associated with common cold but there is so much for an infection in which the most effective cure is chicken soup.

AVIAN FLU

Human beings still have no control and cure for a disease carried by birds and it can also be transmitted by vulnerable humans among themselves. The death rate for this infection is as high as 60% but the highest chance of contacting it is through direct contacts with infected pets especially parrot.

PICA

The disease known to be associated with mineral deficiency makes infected patients crave glue and clay and the worst substances ever. Health experts have not discovered a suitable cure for this weird infection.

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

This is the collective name for afflictions such as lupus and other autoimmune disorders that treat body’s organs and other body functions as invaders. Doctors can do less about this except to curtail the symptoms.

MORGELLOS DISEASE

Crispy strands and tacky skins are the symptoms of this illness. As worse as it may seem, psychotic delusions are responsible for this disease, according to clinical experts. The symptoms are real.

Music/Radio / My Meeting With Don Jazzy Was A Prank - Ozedikus Nwanne by magazineguy(m): 10:55am On Aug 23, 2019
2019 has seen a number of new and exciting names rise from private corners to become popular industry references. Rema, for instance, became a music sensation following the viral spread of his freestyle video that coincided with him signing to Jonzing World – a subsidiary of Mavin Records. Like many prospects before him, the wonder kid almost instantaneously scored his first hit. The hit came in the form of ‘Dumebi’ – one of the four constituent songs of his eponymous extended playlist produced by Ozedikus Nwanne.

Now, with a number of hits to his name and credit for producing one of the continent’s leading songs, Ozedikus has attracted the attention of the leading figures in African music including role models like Masterkraft and Don Jazzy, whose record label OZ is affiliated with today. ‘Do you have a relationship with Masterkraft?’, I asked. Ozedikus took me through the origin of their few months old relationship. He said, ‘I was surprised when I got a DM from Masterkraft.’

The meeting with the Don started like an obvious prank. The doubting Thomas in OZ kept him from believing that a song he produced for his ‘day-one’, Crayon – one of the new Mavin signees – had earned them an invite from Altims to the Mavin Headquarters. ‘I didn’t believe it’, he said and added, ‘I kept telling Cray to check the address to be sure it wasn’t a prank.’ The meeting with the mastermind happened at the second visit of the duo to the nerve center. ‘He had always been a beacon to me but my mentee experience increased after that meeting.’

Career / 5 Easy Ways To Position Yourself For The Right Opportunities by magazineguy(m): 1:45pm On Aug 22, 2019
Opportunities are not always lying around waiting to be grabbed, but sometimes they are. However, they are fleeting and they don’t care if you are ready or not. They require you to take initiative, step out of your comfort zone and apply yourself.

Only meaningful actions will translate into possibilities for you. Consider the soil; it doesn’t care about your need for food. It cares about your initiative to plant the seed. The key to creating and attracting more opportunities is definitive action.

How do you position yourself for the right opportunities though? Nigerians call it ‘packaging’. You’ve got to work on yourself and your environment to attract the right opportunities.

Here are some things you can do.

Look Inwards, know yourself.
This a foundational step that you must take. To know yourself means knowing what you desire, what your personality traits are, where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and how to use these to your advantage. Take time to scrutinize yourself and understand the things that make you tick. Self-awareness will open your mind to your most intimate motivations and that of others towards you. It will also help you to decide what opportunities you desire. Only by knowing what you seek, can you go after it. Visualize and write down where you want to be and the opportunities you need to get there. Then set SMART goals that can help you get there. Goals help you stay on course and on schedule. Goals also help you filter out distractions along the way, so you can stay alert and focused on the important things. Without clarity of where you are going, you may end up somewhere you’d rather not be.

Explore, Learn and Network
The world is filled with opportunities but you’ll never learn of them or grab them if you don’t leave your comfort zone. Attend free events, conferences or seminars in the industry you’re looking for opportunities in. Network, introduce yourself, tell people what you can offer – some of the best opportunities fall on your laps when you least expect it. If you’re trying to meet someone who you don’t have direct access to, find a mutual friend who does, and request an introduction. Sometimes, you may even have to be introduced to the person who will introduce you to them. Don’t falter, determination produces results.

Surround yourself with inspiring people
The attitudes of the people around you play a big role in shaping your attitude as well as the quality of opportunities that you find. Your circle can either push you towards your dream or keep you stagnant. Their lifestyles can either motivate you or discourage you. To get ahead in life and attract the best opportunities, choose wisely whom you spend most of your time with. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring people. A continued association with positive, supportive and inspiring people will influence your future because you subconsciously start to model these behaviours. Likewise, negative people significantly impact their surroundings, often lacking ambition and spreading pessimistic thoughts. So, make sure to start and nurture relationships with people whose lifestyles and choices inspire you to do better.

Let your work do the work
Are you an amazing writer? Then create a blog and start publishing articles or submit to other magazines or journals. Do you have an eye for fashion and style? Start sharing blogs or vlogs sharing your fashion tips and tutorials. Are you amazing at graphic design? Are you a badass digital marketer? Share some of your coolest tips and tricks online. The more information you put out there, the more people will recognize your name and think of you as an expert. You must position yourself as an expert in your field, to be recognized as such. By showing that you are great at what you do, your chances for getting opportunities and offers will increase exponentially. Make sure to keep track of all your work, content, accomplishments in a portfolio, blog or an online resume.

Remain Open to alternate Opportunities
You might set out with a goal in mind of exactly what you want to do and how you want to do it, but rarely will life work out exactly how you think it will. Open yourself up to alternate opportunities that may have not been on your radar.

For instance, a writer can go on to take a corporate communications or brand management job where they will still be telling stories with their skills. A graphic designer may find themselves accepting an opportunity to do UI/UX design. It might even be a complete pivot from what you wanted when you set out, but the best opportunities aren’t always what you envisioned. Sometimes opportunities that use your skills are different than what you expect.

Food / 5 Hopping Cozy Outdoor Spots In Lagos by magazineguy(m): 3:34pm On Aug 09, 2019
As the Lagos restaurant and bar scene continues to grow, so do the opportunities for dining and drinking outdoor. There’s little better than enjoying good food and cheer outside, with a view of the skyline.

I had presumed that one major drawback that outdoor spots in Lagos may experience would be constant rain during the rainy season, but I quickly realized that most, if not all of these spots, have indoor spaces as well.

Lagos has an impressive array of unique outdoor restaurants and bars, and so offers a lot to both Lagosians and Tourists alike. However, with a wide variety to choose from, here are the 5 spots I checked out during my tour:

The Orchid Bistro

58A, Isaac John Street, Ikeja.

The Orchid Bistro has two branches in Lagos; one in Ikeja and another in Victoria Island (called Orchid Bistro Express). I chose to visit the one in Ikeja because it was the first one opened, and from pictures online, I could tell that it had a bigger outdoor space.

It was raining when I got there, and so I had to sit inside the restaurant while waiting for the rain to subside. The general ambience of the indoor space was great, there was classical music playing in low volume, and the waiter was very helpful with his menu suggestions. I ordered the Prawn Relish and Mixed Fruit Smoothie, which was a great choice, even though I felt the portion of the food could have been bigger. Their food menu is very extensive with breakfast to dinner, mains, sides and dessert inclusive.

Thankfully, it stopped raining so I had the chance to sit at the outdoor space, and the waiter was kind enough to find a mini Bluetooth speaker so I could have music playing outside. This space is unlike any other space I’ve visited in Lagos. If you’re drawn to spending time around plants and nature, then you could easily decide to live there. The outdoor space at Orchid Bistro was designed primarily using plants, real plants, by the way, to create a garden ambience. The space simply exuded an air of tranquility, the waiters were kind and well-spoken and the service was fast and impressive.

Damage:

Prawn Relish (Spicy prawns served with sweet potato parcels) – N6000

Mixed Fruit Smoothie – N1500

Nok By Alara

12A, Akin Olugbade Street, Victoria Island.

This restaurant bills itself as a Fine Dining Contemporary Pan-African Restaurant.

Nok by Alara has an indoor restaurant, outdoor garden restaurant and a concept store.

Nok garden’s very unique and eclectic space, displaying vibrant furniture and decor pieces, makes it look pretty as a picture. There was no music playing at the garden on the evening I visited, not sure if this is a regular, so the atmosphere was generally quiet.

It took me nothing short of 10minutes to select a meal from 3 extensive menus and I finally chose the “Red Red” Beans Stew with Steamed Plantain, simply because I’d been craving beans for quite some time. I thought the beans could have tasted less sour and spicier but I wouldn’t say the food was terrible, I’m excited to revisit and try other options from the menu.

The concept store, called Alara, collects and stocks various fashion, art and design objects from all over Africa, alongside western brands.

Damage:

“Red Red” Beans Stew with Steamed Plantain – N3200

Coke – N700

Bolivar Bar

Plot B20, Wole Olateju Crescent, Lekki.

This gem is located in the heart of Lekki Phase 1, just by the Lagoon waterside. Having visited this spot at night in the past, it was definitely a different experience being there in the early evening. One thing I’ve always taken out of Bolivar Bar is great vibes from the music and the ambience of the space.

The space is adorned with a lot of Wall Murals and Sculptures which makes the design really gorgeous. There are regular outdoor seats, hammocks and cabanas, which used to be free in the past, from what I remember, but are charged for now. I was told to either pay fifty thousand Naira or spend up to thirty-five thousand Naira on a bottle, to get access to the Cabanas. I wasn’t having any of it, I had experienced sitting on the cabana in the past and that was enough for me Lol.

The Menu at Bolivar Bar is very sparse. It shouldn’t be your first choice if you’re looking for a space with fine dining because they only serve finger foods. I ordered a Hamburger with fries on the side and it was a fairly good tasting burger. There is a gallery in the premises which houses some good paintings and I got myself a cute painting postcard.

Damage:

Hamburger – N3500

Beer – N1000

Atmosphere Rooftop

The Roof Terrace, Lennox Mall, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1.

There is a growing number of rooftop restaurants and bars in Lagos, but this one has the most stunning décor I have seen. The restaurant is spacious, surrounded by a lot of greens and is beautifully furnished. I must admit though, that it was a little bit difficult locating the entrance to the space. The main building elevator was faulty, and there were no signs at all or security guards in place, to direct intending visitors to the entrance.

The menu was not extensive, so it was easy to settle for the Alfredo Pasta and a glass of homemade lemonade. The Pasta was basically Mac and Cheese and could’ve used much less cheese than what was served. I cannot recommend the pasta but I’d be willing to go back and try something else if the menu is expanded.

Generally, Atmosphere Rooftop could be a great place to get drinks after work while enjoying the view of the skyline. It’s also an “Instagrammable” space for picture lovers.

Damage:

Alfredo Pasta – N4000

Homemade Lemonade – N2000

Hardrock Cafe

Plot 3&4, Block XVI, Oniru Estate, Victoria Island.

As a beach lover, this space could not have been left out of my list. Hardrock cafe Lagos is situated just by the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, which if you already haven’t guessed, makes it a very relaxing space, thanks to calming sounds of the waves and the soothing ocean breeze.

The classic RnB music playing contributed to how much I enjoyed being in this place. I ordered the Smokehouse Chicken and a Bitter Lemon, and the speed with which the food was served was very much unexpected. The waiter had asked if I wanted the chicken spicy and I agreed, but the level of pepper I tasted in the chicken threw me off balance. I adjusted anyways and enjoyed the roasted chicken and fries on the side.

The beach is freely accessible by visitors from the outdoor space of the cafe, so I took a walk down to the shore, sat on the sand for a bit, took pictures and just enjoyed watching the waves of the ocean. The outdoor space of Hardrock cafe is very family-friendly, and a great place to get food and catch up with a group of friends.

Smokehouse Chicken – N5800

Bitter Lemon – N700

Music/Radio / Why Artistes’ Preference For Singles Over Albums Is Increasing by magazineguy(m): 10:37am On Jun 29, 2019
Beyond the numerous hit singles, the exciting videos, the magical performances that characterize the careers of successful artists, the great albums that these artists create form part of their career highlights. For instance, it is almost impossible to detail Wande Coal’s career without a mention of the success of the Mushin 2 Mo’Hits album. Likewise, Tuface’s illustrious career would be made light without a testament to the impact of the Grass to Grace album. It is a lore: great artists have great albums to show in their catalogue.

This long-existing belief is increasingly being reassessed in the scheme of things today, as the music industry continues to experience a technology-driven evolution which has changed the pattern of music consumption on a global scale. The heightened speed of things – music creation and consumption – in today’s industry, has affected the culture of album releases such that musicians are having to choose between the option of putting out albums or maintaining a pattern of releasing singles to meet the demand from the fans. This is a slight shift from the position of the music community in the past, where singles and albums had their respective places in the plans of artists.

The big task for artists in the intensely competitive music industry of today is how to earn and sustain the listening ear of the fans. The bid to meet this goal causes artists to decide on which roll-out strategy works best – a single-focused approach or a plan which includes album releases. General Manager and Executive Vice President of Commerce & Marketing for Warner Bros, Larry Mattera said, “in the past, it was about vying for fans’ dollars.” “Now it’s about vying for fans’ time – time spent consuming our repertoire, rather than our competitors’ repertoire.”

Nigeria artists like Reekado Banks have voiced similar opinions. The pop singer, in a tweet published on December 15, 2017, confirmed that there is a change of approach towards music albums. His tweet reads, “we don’t appreciate albums anymore! Can’t waste my hard work! One by one una go hear am.” Pop star, Tekno, communicates same with his action. The singer has rejected the industry standard that necessitates the release of albums for established acts. The pop star, despite hitting a run of form in 2016, with chart-topping songs like “Pana” and “Duro”, which were expected to serve as precedents to his debut album, continues to demonstrate his preference for serving his music as singles.

The argument against the impact of music albums in today’s music industry focuses on the consumption pattern of the music audience, which is increasingly adjusting to the internet revolution by turning to streaming platforms for music supplies. Larry Mattera admitted that music practitioners are “experimenting across board.” She revealed the nature of the questions that are raised in boardrooms. “Is a singles-focused approach better, with songs stacked at appropriate times? Should it be a smaller body of work [like an EP]? Is this fanbase actually looking for an album at this time?“ she asked.

Famous songwriter, Eskeerdo emphasized on how the consumption habit of fans affects the way music is being served. The composer said “people’s attention spans (today) are the size of a period.” “All your music is entirely consumed in a week – if you’re lucky,” he adds. This echoes the controversial point of Reekado Banks who implied that he would not be putting out 12 or 15 songs at once on a full-length project due to the reduced reward which might mean revenue from sales or project shelf-life.

Every now and then, artists sit with their team on round tables to map out plans on how to deliver their product to the fans in the most effective way and this often leads to conversations on the need for an album. While this is usually discussed with regard to factors like timing, budget, projected income, more practitioners are beginning to see less need for a full-length album, and looking at alternatives like the Extended Playlists and singles, to get the best from our portable music society today where music streaming is the in-thing.

Sports / Vinicius: The Next Big Thing After Ronaldo by magazineguy(m): 8:56am On Jun 21, 2019
Vinicius Junior had braces on his teeth when he arrived in Madrid for the 2018/2019 season. With double figure appearances in the La Liga and the Champions League, there’s nothing childish about his game

Vinicius Junior glittered in silvery smiles when he landed at Madrid’s Barajas airport in the summer, a couple of days after turning 18 years old.

His new employers, Real Madrid, were delighted to see him in a happy mood, the next prospect in their opinion. The braces on his teeth had to go after showing off, a demand from the board of directors which saw the man take them off.

The Spanish giants protected the man at all costs and there were concerns about his feelings on and off the pitch, as he looked naive. Although, the young man has the stamina and strength, asides his speed and acceleration.

Real Madrid paid Rio de Janeiro side Flamengo an astonishing €45 million ($51 million)—and potentially €61 million ($69 million)—in the previous year when he was just 16 years old.

Numerous demands have been put on Vinicius this season and that will not be the last as the toll on his development have taken a huge slope in his game time and directors are expecting him to fit into shoes in such a short time.

After Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane departed the club after a third successive Champions League title, former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui was brought in to try to reconfigure the team.

However, the man just saw a little maturity from Vinicius.

But after a few months, everything changed. And he was sacked, and new head coach Solari put his faith in Vinicius. Since then we have witnessed the meteoric rise of a star.

In the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, Vinicius became the club’s youngest player to be featured in a Clasico against Barcelona in the 21st century.

He wasted no time in proving he was the future. At his first touch of the ball at the Camp Nou, an almost deafening whistle from around 92,000 fans was heard. He needed only six minutes to silence the crowd who were hailing him, combining with Karim Benzema to create a goal for Lucas Vazquez in the 1-1 draw.

He was involved in eight+ goals for Madrid in the Copa del Rey last season, scoring twice and providing six assists.

He also emerged as a regular starter in La Liga and appeared in his first UEFA Champions League knockout tie when Real Madrid travelled to Amsterdam to face Ajax, before being knocked out eventually.

Vinicius brought his whole family with him from Rio de Janeiro to Madrid. They live in a mansion with a basketball court in La Moraleja, a wealthy residential neighbourhood near the club’s training and development facilities.

Benzema, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Casemiro and Luka Modric all live next to him, which will be handy in improving his language skills, adapting to the culture and bond with other team members, who may not be staying in Madrid for long as they are aging.

Vinicius is still young but physically ready, extremely fast, with very impressive sprinting. He is also a player with pace and controls the ball, beautifully.

Travel / Six Tips To Make Living In Lagos More Bearable by magazineguy(m): 9:50am On Jun 07, 2019
Living in Lagos, especially as a young person trying to make ends meet can get difficult and overwhelming. There are a lot of odds against us, and we spend our free time fantasizing about leaving Nigeria. While we’re still here though, we must find ways to make life more bearable, and even enjoyable. Here’s six tips from a fellow young adult Lagosian on living in Lagos

Use Google Maps

This is the year of our Lord 2019. Trust me, you don’t want to head out to or from anywhere in Lagos without first consulting your map. Although prone to mistakes a few times, google maps will accurately navigate you to your destination while letting you know which routes have traffic, and which don’t. In this mega city where traffic can form in 2.5 seconds, you need to constantly be checking your map so you don’t pass the wrong routes. Using google maps has saved me hours in traffic several times. Please use it, it is free.

When going out, Plan, Plan, Plan

With the way traffic is set up in Lagos, it’s very important to look before you leap i.e. Plan before you step out of your house. People often say ‘Live close to your office’ when giving Lagos hacks, but I think that is rather simplistic. We can’t all afford to live close to our offices. A more realistic advice is to plan carefully every time you’re going out. How far is this place? What time do I need to get there? How likely is there to be traffic during that time frame? Based on all of this, what time do I need to leave the house? There you go. Generally, if you can help it, avoid going in the direction of traffic during rush hour. And if you’re stuck in traffic when you’re in a hurry, jump on an okada (sorry, car owners). A little planning can be what saves you from being late to that job interview or missing your flight.

Find a hobby

Lagos can be crazy stressful, so you must find something to do that will constantly spark joy in your life. Our lives are filled with stress—from our jobs, schools, bills, partners, kids, traffic— there’s a seemingly endless list of other minor stressors. Hobbies play an important role in mitigating some of this unavoidable stress, as they provide an outlet for creativity, distraction, and something to look forward to. Hobbies build confidence, reduce stress and make you more interesting.

“Hobbies bring a sense of fun and freedom to life that can help to minimize the impact of chronic stress. Those who feel overwhelmed at a job, for example, can benefit from hobbies because they provide an outlet for stress and something to look forward to after a hard day (or week) at a stressful job,” says VeryWell.com.

Your hobby can be reading, writing, drawing, knitting or sewing. It can also be something active like learning a new sport, running, or going to the gym. There’s a wide range of activities you can pick up as a hobby. Find one or two you enjoy, and feel free to drop them and pick a new one after some time. Just don’t pick a hobby that brings more stress into your life. PS: A hobby is not the same thing as a side hustle.

Get Health Insurance

I cannot overstate the importance of having a HMO plan if you live anywhere in Nigeria. The heat, traffic and stress of living in Lagos can often put a strain on your physical and mental health. Medical bills are expensive and often come at inconvenient times. A health insurance plan makes it easier and way cheaper (sometimes free) to access healthcare when you need it. If your job doesn’t provide a HMO cover for you, you can buy one for as low as N50,000 a year, or less than N3,500 a month.

There are several organizations now offering health coverage plans. Before you choose one, do proper research. Visit the website and social media platforms of the organizations you’re considering, ask people about them, look for real testimonials and find out what hospitals around you on their network. Finally, compare costs and make an informed decision.

PS: Don’t wait until you’re very ill to buy a health plan. Gambling with your health is a bad idea.

Network!

You can meet some very important people, and become privy to important information and opportunities by simply striking up a conversation at a social event. I get it — networking isn’t at the top of everyone’s list of fun things to do. It can be time-consuming, downright awkward on occasion, and — depending on your personality — incredibly draining. However, it is important for establishing and nurturing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. It expands your support network, makes you more visible and opens doors to opportunities for you. So just do it!

Don’t limit yourself to events within your industry. You can make great connections even at the club! If you don’t go out often, you can also network on social media by starting conversations on platforms like LinkedIn or Twitter. Next time you find yourself standing next to a stranger at a function, strike up a conversation.

PS: Be sensitive enough to realize when someone doesn’t want to hold a conversation with you, and walk away. Networking only works if all parties involved are interested. Don’t know when events are happening? Want to be in the loop? I find out about events and conferences on Eventbrite, The NothingToDoInLagos Newsletter and Social Media.

Take a break, take in the sights and have fun

Finally, not every time struggle to survive. Sometimes, sit back, relax and breathe. You live in a beautiful city with a lot to see and take in. Dedicate some weekends to exploring and having fun. It can be overwhelming just existing in Lagos, so you need the occasional breather. There’s tons of fun activities to do in Lagos that can take the edge off. Go to a club with friends, visit an art gallery, go to the beach, go kayaking. Visit Omu resort with your friends, or the Lekki Conservation Centre and just take in nature’s beauty. Go jumping at the upbeat center or challenge your friends at Rufus and Bees Arcade. If it’s your cup of tea, visit a strip club. Attend a gathering of like minds to discuss issues, or go to a silent disco party. There’s no one size fits all for fun activities. Find what you enjoy and go to town with it.

Remember, this life na once! (YOLO)

Music/Radio / Why Asa Gets A Queen’s Welcome With Each Reappearance by magazineguy(m): 11:07am On Jun 04, 2019
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5. A 5-year hiatus in the Nigerian music industry is almost as good as retirement. It is near impossible for an artist to make a comeback after such a long break and expect to be welcomed with the same energy, except the artist is Asa or Lagbaja. Artists who took shorter breaks in the past are either permanently retired or they are battling to come out of obscurity to return to the spotlight.

Lagbaja, the Africalypso musician, has however disappeared and reappeared so often that it has become a part of his artistic identity. Asa is starting to become known with this habit and the impending release of her new album would be the litmus test of the success of her reappearance, although the warm anticipation which followed her teasing social media posts and the acceptance of her new single are already promising signs.

The reason an Asa would succeed in making a seamless return from a creative hermit, while an average Nigerian musician would struggle to make a comeback from an extended break, is spread across a range of factors. Principal among these factors is the difference in branding. This ties into Asa’s identity as an elite singer with a distinctive music style. It ties into her charming innocence and flawless grace. It ties into her reputation for scarce but elegant releases.

This unique identity of Asa’s has been built over a long period of more than a decade, with a defined pattern of roll-outs, a consistent show of artistic brilliance, a habit of reclusiveness that is accepted with the popular belief that “Asa does not always release materials and whenever she does, it comes out excellent.” This common belief translates into music consumers valuing Asa’s music and considering it as premium quality – a product which is worth the wait.

“Asha”, the debut album of the singer, houses defining songs like “Jailer” and “Fire on the Mountain”, which helped establish the warm and rich amount of social consciousness in her music. “Beautiful Imperfection”, which came years later, built on the pre-existing foundation of her artistry (brand), with well-received songs like “Be My Man” and “Questions”, which explores the subject of human social interactions, particularly from the angle of a woman.

Asa took another stretched break, 4 years precisely, before releasing another album, “Bed of Stone.” The 14-track album achieved both critical and commercial acclaim, with constituent songs likes “Eyo” and “Satan Be Gone” becoming playlist-and radio-popular. The elements which characterize the artistry of Asa, like social consciousness and sonic elegance, remained consistent in the album. This further consolidated the value of the Asa brand.

The Asa brand, for more than a decade, has been mould in the frame of an elegant and especial musician whose art contains a substance of value – valuable enough to be served purposefully rations. This is the reason she is likened to Adele – an artist renowned globally for her seclusive artistic brilliance. Asa has built a similarly powerful brand which has put her in the rare position to take a break from the scene into a creative hermit and return with materials that are sure to excite the fans as her reappearances come with an aura of ”the Queen is back.”

Health / Best Diet For Eye Care And Bright Eyes by magazineguy(m): 8:03am On Jun 02, 2019
One could literally sit and find their eyes itching. At that point, there is no other remedy than to scratch those eyes. It is known that the eyes are so soothing to scratch. The next moment, you find yourself poking them with your index finger (OMG! what sort of destructive act are you doing to yourself). Sometimes, bloodshot eyes results from lack of sleep and long hours of screen time. No matter the severity of the case of redness, diet always play an important role to curtailing the situation in the long term:

OMEGA – 3

The major cause of redness in the eyes results from inflammation of the outer tissue of the eyes. Choosing foods in Omega -3 fatty acids help to prevent this condition e.g. Salmon, halibut, walnut, pumpkin seeds. The healing is gradual. Hence, one may have to be patient to achieve total relief.

HYDRATION

It’s amazing how just drinking 8 cups of water replenishes the body, including the eyes. Fluid intake is essential for eye comfort. Dehydration occurs when you fail to drink adequate amount of water and it results in dry eyes comfort. The redness should disappear within a day or two, if strictly followed. When there are other symptoms like dry mouth, lethargy and low urination, then it shows one is simply dehydrated and should follow strict measures.

FRUITS

Fruits are the most dietary and defensive aids for healthy eyes. Majorly, fruits act as antioxidants and are critical to eye health. Scientific and optic studies have shown that the eyes need high quantities of vitamin C to function. Examples of such fruits are oranges, tangerine, lemon, peaches, water melon, cherries and blueberries. A surprising fact is that red pepper, strawberries and tomatoes also perform the same function and contain the same nutrients as the listed fruits above.

Music/Radio / 10 Songs You Should Listen To This Week by magazineguy(m): 2:31pm On Apr 29, 2019
Playlists can get pretty boring, especially when you’ve broken down and deciphered every line, lyric and cryptic words behind those songs. You don’t have to put your curious mind into searching for more musical contents to feed those earwormy ears. I’ve got you from now on:

Old town road (Remix) – Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

Some new school rappers and pop stars are quick to get themselves into fans’ hearts. Even when the original was kicked off the Billboard country chart, Billy still jumped on the infectious and bumpy instrumentals to make a better one as a remix. Make sure you don’t miss the rhythm and hook of this smashing joint.

Sugar Mummy – Teni

Teni has switched sounds again with the influx of the Zanku trend. You shouldn’t care much because she’s a sweetheart and her target audience and fans are willing to dance to some Afrobeats and Afro-pop hits. The beat will make you shake your body.

Cuz I love you – Lizzo

Experimental musicians are emerging and have no definite genre for their craft. Lizzo is one of those musicians. The song has background chorus with powerful vocals blended with rap verses. The piano keys will make you think it is an actual pop anthem.

Power is power – The Weeknd, SZA and Travis Scott (Game of thrones soundtrack)

What if the Night king ascends the Iron throne? Then you should be glad three great musicians curated a Game of Thrones playlist. SZA and The Weeknd were on a contest to prove their vocal prowess to fans and Travis Scott was reminiscent of his glory on ‘Goosebumps’.

Low – Larry Gaaga featuring Wizkid

Wizkid has been missing for the first quarter of the year and the best way to entice his waiting fans was on a Larry Gaaga collaboration. This song brings calm vibes and the soft vocals of Wizkid. You will definitely love this one.

All I want – Russ featuring Davido

Russ speaks Nigerian pidgin English, Davido shines on the hook, chorus and his verse. The instrumentals are powerful. It is quite funky, too. Don’t sleep on this International collaboration.

Blessings – Gospelondebeatz featuring Peruzzi, Kholi, Praiz and Alternate sound

Probably one of the best feel good songs right now. It’s so hard to find a flaw on this joint even when Praiz overstretched his vocals but recovered as quickly as possible. Peruzzi stole the shine on another feature and the best live band out of Nigeria right now, The alternate sound are soaring higher than last year.

Mr Vendor – Korede Bello

Korede reminds us of his glory days and this may be that song that returns him to his rightful place at the top. If you miss the old days, this is the best song for you. Like his lyrics, he came with the vibe.

Awolowo – BOJ featuring Kwesi Arthur, Darkovibes, Joey B

Multilingual songs are breaking into top streaming service playlists fast. The vibe and flow with them are pure and can lighten mood up. What else do you need when you know BOJ is on the hook.

What if – Yung6ix featuring Peruzzi

Yung6ix drops bars, Peruzzi shines on a chorus and Fresh VDM’s beat flies all over during the duration of the potential banger!

Politics / NASS Leadership: Northern Group Alleges Plot By Tinubu To Remove Buhari by magazineguy(m): 8:21pm On Apr 27, 2019
The Northern Youths Movement, NYM, has warned leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the north to be mindful of an alleged plot by the party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu, to snatch power from President Muhammadu Buhari before 2023 so as to pave way for his presidential ambition.

In a statement to DAILY POST on Saturday, the group alleged that Tinubu was already aware that with President Buhari in power till 2023, his presidential ambition can never be realized and now plotting to orchestrate Buhari’s impeachment latest by 2022 if he remained healthy till then.

NYM’s statement was issued in Abuja by its Chairman, Mallam Ishaya Jato.

The statement added that Tinubu’s desperation to take over the National Assembly by installing Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, his “political boy” as Speaker of the House was part of his sinister plot to get the President out of power at all cost.

It added, “Tinubu is banking on two scenarios; the President becoming incapacitated before 2022 or his impeachment and he will need the National Assembly for both.

“Having used the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole to take over states in the South from governors like Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun that he opined can challenge him in 2023; Tinubu is now after the larger picture of total control of the National Assembly.

“It is, therefore dangerous for the north for the same Southwest, which already has the Vice President to produce the House of Representatives Speaker.

“It even more dangerous for the same Tinubu; whose political boy is the Vice President to also have another of his stooge as the House of Representatives Speaker.

“We in the NYM will resist this attempt by one single individual to control the political destiny of our country and we urge our leaders in the north to take note of this.

“This is more so that the in the spirit of federal character formula enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria, the six positions of President, Vice President, Senate President and Deputy as well as Reps Speaker and Deputy available, the six geopolitical zones must get one position each.

“Already, Northwest and Southwest have taken President and Vice President respectively; the remaining four positions must therefore be shared among the South-South, South East, North Central and North East zones.

“Particularly, the North Central, which gave massive votes to President Buhari must produce the Speaker.”

Celebrities / Dangote Is Not A Musician But He’s A ‘god’ To Money Racking Musicians by magazineguy(m): 9:33am On Apr 25, 2019
Burna Boy proves that musicians are only small gods and there are public figures out there that have never been in the booth or even spread vocals on instrumentals, worth idolizing.

Burna Boy’s ”Dangote” follows the track in which Nigerian singers find themselves in the trains of millionaires, invoking insecurities of the music industry which is worth more than eighty million dollars ($80M).

Contrary to popular opinion about artists carting away large bags, deposits after tours and shows, it’s becoming more vivid by the day that Nigerian artists will never get to the level where their foreign contemporaries lie – earning mouth-watering cheques, royalties, endorsements and sponsorships.

Burna Boy soulful delivery has made him the spokesman for his colleagues who admire the effort of the Nigerian millionaires and strive to be wealthier or be in their level as he echoed in the chorus to ‘Dangote’ :

” Dangote Dangote/Dangote still dey find money o/I no dey, I no dey/I no dey sleep on the money o/Who I be?/Who I be?/Wey make I no go find money o/I no dey send anybody o/Me I dey hustle gan gan ”

When wealth and affluence are infused in Afrobeats, hits are made, all thanks to Otedola and Dangote. Dice Ailes would be one of the recipients of this tradition when his single ”Otedola” became a national hit in 2017 referencing the rich man in his introduction and chorus to the Pop song: ”……….. I be Otedola with the money oh ”

An accomplishing reference to this hypothesis is the Nigerian sweetheart and songstress, Teni, chorusing Dangote and Adeleke’s name in her hit, ”Case”. Teni’s song explains her love and feelings but her class still portrays the money as a frantic condition.

” …….Cause my papa no be Dangote or Adeleke but we go dey ok yea yea/But my papa no be Dangote or Adeleke but we go dey ok yea yea ” , she sings in admiration of the unidentified lover.”

Our Nigerian musicians will always familiarize with the money and others that earn more than them and it’s a dilemma that the industry still remains a swarm for rapacious music executives.

Sports / Meet Debbie Larry Izamoje, Daughter Of CEO Of Brila FM - Larry Izamoje by magazineguy(m): 12:50pm On Mar 27, 2019
Listening to Debbie Larry-Izamoje – daughter of Larry-Izamoje, veteran sport journalist and CEO of Brila Fm – talk about her entrepreneurial experience, reminds me of the famous words of former US President, John Quincy Adams who thoughtfully said, “I am a warrior, so that my son maybe a merchant, so that his son may be a poet.” In the case of the Izamojes, Mr. Larry is a journalist, so Debbie can be the digital communications expert that she is today. More so, he built Brila Fm to be the foremost sports radio unit in Nigeria, while she’s the young and trendy mind, giving the brand image a boost, projecting it to the global audience, through the inter-connective power of the digital space.

24-year old Debbie, an Information Management degree holder, and with a Masters degree in Management to her name, established “Image Booster” and “Entrepreneur’s Best Friend” – the former is a digital agency that handles campaigns, online story sharing, and other communication parts of digital marketing; the latter, a passion-driven commitment to helping budding businesses. She explained, “my real passion comes from sitting down with entrepreneurs, teaching them what to do, and helping them, which is the concept behind Entrepreneur’s Best Friend; but most of my money comes from Image Booster.” Lately, I have growing doubts about my sense of humor but I made an attempt at a joke by saying to Debbie: “since you referred to Entrepreneur’s Best Friend as your real passion, then Image Booster has to be your money passion.” She simply chuckled.

Sports / Most Underrated Footballers In Europe - TushMagazine by magazineguy(m): 1:42pm On Mar 22, 2019
With a touching end to the Christmas break and the UEFA Champions’ League group stage, many footballers have had an impressive season so far, whilst with fewer recognition than the expectations.

Clubs like Juventus, PSG, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have been in excellent form in the league while the other team’s success has been quite shaky and inconsistent. Clubs like Arsenal, AC Milan and Chelsea are competing in the Europa League, and many more poor clubs will be set to join them after the first round of the Champion’s League.

While it was encouraging to see the rise of teams like Ajax and Inter in the Champions’ League, a lot has been investigated about the situation of below-average performances of Monaco and PSV Eindhoven.

These are five footballers who are not getting much recognition for their talent and their display on the pitch. These footballers deserve more credits for their achievement so far this season:

SERGIO BUSQUET (Barcelona)

At the start of his career at the Camp Nou, Sergio was not really a fan-favourite and the situation of his Barcelona contract was surrounded by politics in that the low-key and shadowed midfielder was the relative of one of the Barcelona legends. The decision to sign him was cloudy but after decades, the man has become the subject of debates among pundits and lovers of La Liga.

Sergio’s record in the middle of the park is impressive and envious as Barca’s tiki-taka style of play brings in someone that can hold the play from the first-quarter of the pitch.

WILFRED NDIDI (Leicester City)

The Nigerian International’s growth in the competitive atmosphere of the Premier League is overwhelming. Ndidi boasts of top-notch passes, important interceptions and ability to stop counter-attacks as Leicester City enters the post-Ranieri era and the former Chairman’s calamitous helicopter death.

Wilfred Ndidi, after few years in the League has cemented the first team and is looking irreplaceable to the team as top stars like Vardy and Maddison have connected wonderfully in the attacking unit of the former Premier League Champions team.

Few months ago, Ndidi’s stats showed him as among the top five (5) stoppers of attack and tacklers in the Premier League. This revelation will be important to Leicester and Nigeria as his home country aim to build on a disastrous outing at the last World Cup in Russia.

MARCO VERRATTI (PSG)

The presence of stars like Mbappe and Neymar in the team has made it blind for fans to see the ability of the Italian in the PSG team. What else do you expect from a team that rampages in the transfer market and swims in spending spree every now and then?

For a player like Verratti that builds attack from the back coupled by his passing ability, it is sad that his goal to match ratio will never match that of Neymar and Mbappe. Of course, that is understandable and undermining to the credits of the diminutive central and defensive midfielder whose work rate and attitude on and off the pitch is commendable.

AXEL WITSEL (Borussia Dortmund)

Voted as one of the vital signings in Bundesliga, the inclusion of the Belgian to the highly attacking style of Borussia Dortmund has created more freedom for Gotze, Pulisic and Reus to play high up the pitch with much protection at the back.

With all these qualities, Axel is the complete package and deserves praise for his role in Borrusia Dortmund team.

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA (AC Milan)

The gigantic shot stopper doesn’t gain much attention majorly for two reasons, with the foremost being Milan’s inconsistent form and frequent team shuffle. Milan’s unprofessional backline has been a concern also.

The good news is that the goalkeeper is among the rebuilding the Azzuri. The man is excellent on one-on-one situations and possesses swift reflexes. Gianluigi also has a wide aerial reach and is calm and composed under intense moments.

Food / 5 Gourmet Pizza Spots In Lagos by magazineguy(m): 12:48pm On Mar 20, 2019
Now, this may be a controversial topic because people can be very particular about their pizza. Maybe you like your crust thin or soft, or you like extra cheese, or maybe there’s a specific combination of toppings you must have.

Trying new pizza can be an exciting activity if you’re up for it. In the quest for Gourmet Pizza, I visited a few spots in Lagos that do not make mass production pizzas, making sure I always visited with a date – for double opinions, and here are my Top 5 in no particular order:

La Veranda

La Veranda is located within the Blowfish hotel at 17 Oju Olobu St., Off Idejo St., VI Lagos. If you see a very pink building, you have certainly reached your destination.

La Veranda has a very wide range of varieties which is great, but honestly got me confused on which one to try. Eventually, we decided to settle for the “La Veranda” for obvious reasons.

We requested for the Rucola to be left out because we didn’t want veggies and instead, we ordered for extra chicken. We also decided to choose two different base – one half with pesto and the second half with tomato sauce.

It was ready in 15 mins and the dough was perfectly cooked with a slightly charred base. I’m usually a sucker for thick crust but this one had the perfect thin crust that won me over to the thin crust team.

The Verdict: Although we agreed that the pizza was great, we wondered how much chicken would have been in the pizza originally, if we didn’t order extra chicken, as they could have been more generous with the chicken portion, otherwise, we had no complaints at all.

Damage:

La Veranda – N4,500

Extra Chicken – N1,800

Chapman – 2,000

Pizze-Riah

Pizze-riah, located at 13, Musa Yar’adua St., VI Lagos, seemed like a good place to grab a drink or an appetizer with friends. We quickly settled for Half Suya and Half Wakiki Pizzas from a relatively sparse pizza menu.

The Suya-Pizza had the right thin crust, was crispy and tasted great. The crust had slightly burnt, smoky flavor which we loved. It could have been spicier but my taste buds are very demanding of spice so I’m not the best judge. My date thought it was the perfect amount of spice anyways.

The Wakiki-Pizza on the other hand, with ham and pineapple as the main ingredients, was a little difficult to eat, thanks to the very fresh chunky pineapples that were cut and placed right on top of the pizza without being slightly baked at all.

The pineapples are supposed to be added at the last few minutes of baking the pizza, right? But in this case, we had very juicy, squishy pineapples on which tasted quite wrong. The ham tasted good anyways, so we ended up picking out the pineapple chunks before eating, so maybe request for the pineapples to be baked with the pizza a little, if you have to try the Wakiki-Pizza.

The Verdict: Overall, Pizze-riah‘s outdoor area had a nice ambiance and I would love to visit again and try out their other pizza options. Just remember to sit in the indoor area if you visit in the evening and don’t want to be feast for mosquitoes and also take note that they only accept cash payment.

La Taverna

Located at No. 48, Balarabe Musa Cres., VI Lagos, La Taverna has a proper dining setting indoors and a casual sit out area. Not sure if it was hunger or just poor decision making, but we decided to order two different pizzas – Lagos Street Pizza and Pizza-Taverna.

The Lagos street style pizza crust was thin, very crisp to bite into and had the right amount of cheese. The Taverna however, had a crust that was too thick, more than enough cheese in it and not much going on with the taste.

One poor experience we had here was the amount of time it took for the pizza to be ready – a whole hour! It took a lot for my date and I not to take the piss but the waiter apologized and we were rewarded with complementary dessert – two cups of ice cream.

The Verdict: We felt it was thoughtful of the restaurant to be nice enough to make up for the wait, of course. I would probably visit this place again and try out other pizza options.

Milano Restaurant

Milano Restaurant is an Italian Restaurant within Intercontinental Hotel located at No. 269, Kofo Abayomi Road, VI Lagos. If you don’t already know the hotel, the general ambiance is beautiful and peaceful.

My date and I scrolled through the menu, and realized that all the Pizzas are Nigerian Style – which is odd considering that it is an Italian Restaurant and guests should naturally expect Italian pizza. Moving forward, we requested for our pizza to be Half Chicken Suya Pizza and Half Nigerian Beef Pizza.

Milano Restaurant’s Pizza slices are quite massive; the Chicken Suya Pizza was delicious with thin, crispy crust. The sauce and toppings were fresh and it had the right amount of cheese. The Nigerian beef pizza tasted like the beef was leftover tasteless fried beef picked up from storage. We couldn’t get past the taste of the beef to even know how the dough tasted because it was plain terrible.

The Verdict: Milano Restaurant is a great place to eat pizza if you want to be adventurous and try their Nigerian Style Pizza as they had options like Asun Pizza and Gizzard Pizza. It would be great though, if the beef doesn’t taste stale next time.

La Pizza

La-Pizza, located at No. 13, Taslim Elias Close, VI Lagos is designed Italian Style and is a very cozy space. La pizza has a wide range of pizza choices that are truly Italian style – they keep their recipe really simple.

I ordered for the Chicken Suya-Pizza which contained tomato sauce, mozzarella and chicken and it was ready in 15 mins. At first, it was really soggy and so, a little frustrating to eat, but after letting it cool for a few minutes, it became less soggy.

The crust was thin but the dough wasn’t crispy. The sauce was quite a lot, making the combination with the cheese a little too much. The pizza tasted a little salty at first but soon became consistent, the sauce and the chicken tasted fresh so overall, it wasn’t bad.

The Verdict: Although the Pizzas are quite pricey, La Pizza is a nice place to go if you’re looking for real Italian style gourmet pizza.

Sports / The Toughest Players Ever In The English Premier League History by magazineguy(m): 1:08pm On Mar 16, 2019
The game of football has had several calibers of players both mentally and physically. Figuratively, there are players who are able to carry the whole team along in terms of battles and brawls. These same players are hard in the way they tackle and commit fouls on oppositions. Consequently, the lovers of the game are aware of the rules but these players are stubborn to their studs and will do anything to obstruct play and even graze the blades of grasses on the pitch. The good old days remind me of hard men in the world’s most watched league since its inception in 1992/1993. Here is a list of those ‘gladiators’ that will ‘take one for the team’ when called upon:

Patrick Vieira

The Frenchman was very tall and a maestro in the middle park at Arsenal. The former captain comes on the least as he cumulated ten (10) Red cards in his Arsenal F.C. career with many yellow cards. The man will always be remembered for his outburst at Roy Keane during a match day fixture against Manchester United.

Roy Keane

Captains are built for the responsibility and Roy wasn’t less. Roy was one of the most committed and hardest players in the league who gathered a total of nineteen (19) trophies in his career at Manchester United. Roy Keane was also known to be rough and aggressive in his style of play – a character that should be in place when representing Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Alan Shearer

It’s normal for strikers to unleash their dry spells on defenders and this legend is one of those strikes. With his record goals in the Premier League still intact and yet to be dethroned, Alan Shearer will never be forgotten as an aggressive and dirty centre forward who was always forgiven by referees.

Thomas Gravesen

Probably one of the controversial players ever in the ranks of Everton F.C, The Danish player was popular as member of a Danish gang and was always quick to confront his teammates whenever he felt it was needed. Thomas was very dirty to his opponents on and off the pitch.

Nemanja Vidic

The Serbian International is arguably one of the best centre backs in the premier league history, forming a solid partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the defense line of Manchester United. A United legend at that, he racked up quite a number of trophies at the club during their glory days. He was able to endure pain on the pitch, strong in the air and a hard tackler on his opponents.

Julian Dicks

Julian was a tough tackler at West Ham United. He was the type that never shied away from going in on opponents even if it meant getting sent off. Not long after, he was named ‘The Terminator’. Julian always got into the books of referees and that eventually cost him the captain armband. He was really a dirty ball player. He was named player of the year at West Ham four different times before finally retiring due to the injuries sustained from his style of play.

Neil Ruddock

He was named ‘Razor’ after the famous boxer for the way he cuts opponents on the pitch. Neil played for four different teams including Liverpool F.C. He was really a ruthless defender robust in his position. Neil will always be seen in the heat of brawls and will swing an arm whenever he got provoked. Let’s put it this way: Neil was simply a gangster.

Celebrities / “it Would Be Nice To Be In A Stable Relationship” – Waje (photos) by magazineguy(m): 2:08pm On Mar 13, 2019
Nigeria singer, Waje who recently unveiled her new movie project alongside Omawunmi talks about finding love in this interview with TushMagazine.

There is an air of renewed resolution about Waje. She’s excited about everything. She cracks one-liner jokes all through the photo shoot. She’s also controlling the music in the room, scanning through her iPhone to switch tracks. At some point, she cues in 6LACK’s ‘Pretty Little Fears’, and everyone sings along. “You people have to pay for this song oh,” she mocks.

“Away from all these professional desires and new opportunities, what would be the one thing that would make you happy as a person?” I ask. She’s spent all day being Waje the musician, Waje the businesswoman, and Waje the industry leader. She stops, her smile vanishes as she looks to the floor as if she’s deciding which of her many desires would be the one that gets shared today. She chooses, smiles again and shares it, but not before mildly complaining that the question was too “deep.”

Her response was deep too: “Let me be honest with you, it would be nice to be in a stable relationship. It would be nice to know what that feels like. Sometimes maybe because of my job, it’s not like I don’t go on dates, but sometimes I get busy. And at a time where I don’t get busy I now want my space. So it would be nice to balance that side of my life. I think that would be nice.”

Music/Radio / Meet Phantom, Producer Of The Year And Producer Of Burna Boy's YE by magazineguy(m): 9:58am On Mar 11, 2019
The acceptance speech by Burna Boy’s mom, Bose Ogulu, as she collected the ‘Song of the Year’ award at the 2018 SoundCity MVP Awards – the part where she said, “thank you Shina Peller for writing history when all you thought was, you were providing a studio.” – adds weight to the existing belief that success, a lot of times, is the result of a chain of events – sometimes unplanned events.

“I didn’t plan for Ye, even Burna didn’t plan for Ye. Nobody planned for it”, Phantom said.

The story behind the birth of the song which brought mammoth-sized success to Burna Boy in 2018; made the world recognise Phantom; and gives joy to millions of music lovers across borders, is a fine example of how, sometimes, the big break comes when you least expect it. Even Phantom never knew Burna Boy would walk into his studio to record on a beat he had wishfully prepared for him; they both probably never imagined the song would reach International heights, or that it would someday share title with Kanye’s album. A fairy must have granted his wish for a Burna Boy collaboration – that is if fairies actually exist.

What is established, however, is that the recording of the song was very “spiritual.” Phantom revealed that “there was this quietness in the studio after he (Burna) voiced Ye”. This force behind the song caused it to become the biggest material in Phantom’s portfolio; and maybe the biggest in Burna’s too. However, Phantom rates Airboy’s “Aiye Po” as his best work yet. “With that very song, myself and Airboy were able to restructure our lives”. Like the excitement of the first sign of germination is to a new farmer, the success of Aiye po, coming after four years of working tirelessly without “buzz”, occupies a special place in Phantom’s heart.

The years before the first sign of success were spent trying to get a Town Planning degree without necessarily attending lectures; chasing a career as a performing artist under the name “Carlzino”; making amateur beats and getting funny payments like a bottle of Pepsi. The idea of creating a brand of Afrobeat that would appeal to the world changed all of that. “I went back to the drawing board and started creating my sound, even from the tempo to the kind of instruments I used – I started to use more African instruments. I infused western sounds to make it sound modern”.

While Afro-fusion is very much a sub-genre, which everyone looking to retouch Afrobeat music to create something new can claim, Phantom is looking to imprint his signature sound as a new Afrobeat’ special, perhaps he would record success – at least a measure of it – with his forthcoming EP. Already the likes of Wurld, Airboy, Wizkid, Boj are working with him on that. “I had a first-hand experience of how legends work” he said, about his experience working with Wiz.

The duo – Wiz and Phantom – share similarities in their meticulous creative approach. “I take my time for my kind of music. I don’t rush my music. I could spend three hours on only one kick or one snare”, he said. Since there’s no prize for the first artist or producer to put out music, Phantom’s style is the right one – till the idea has been formed the process of creating continues. With the confidence of someone who has the knowledge he said: “classics take time to create”.

Ye is considered a classic – until proven otherwise. Phantom believes the song stamped his name amongst the greats. “Everyone knew Phantom was there. They know he is always working but Ye stamped the brand. It made people to take me serious”. It took 4 years for Phantom to get heard, it took another 5 for the producer to get recognised and his talent acknowledged. Popular producer, Sarz, his mentor recently called him to say, “I am proud of you”. Top artists like Davido and Tekno have met him for his skill.

Now that the world is listening, the introverted producer is not preparing to disappoint. “Right now, the onus is on me to spread my reach in industry and take my sound across borders, to U.K, U.S. That’s the plan this year”. Of all the good happenings around Phantom’s life lately, what’s most assuring is the convincing desire for improvement he displayed during our chat. Where he could have called himself a genius or the man of the moment, he simply said, “I am a work in progress”.

Travel / 5 Places In Nigeria You Should Visit In 2019 by magazineguy(m): 9:37am On Mar 02, 2019
Happy new guys! It’s 2019 and it’s not too early to start making travel plans for the year. We know everyone has lofty dreams of visiting the Maldives, Seychelles or even Jordan. However, while making these plans and budgeting, why not add a Nigerian destination or two to your list?

Wondering where in Nigeria would make the hassle worth it? Well I have come with a list that you can choose from.

Abraka Turf – Located in Abraka, Delta state – this country club is a divine oasis. It is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday Nigerian life. While their accommodation is definitely a highlight due to the variety, there are also things that you can do while there.
Ever heard of River Ethiope? This blue green goodness is believed to be Africa’s deepest inland waterway. The clarity of this river is incredible and the source is said to be a cotton tree. Even if you do not do anything when you go there, this River is a must visit and there is a trail at the turf that leads to it so you can jump in for a swim or have a boat ride. The turf also offers quad biking, horse riding etc.

Other things you can do while in Delta state is a visit McCarthy beach, Chief Nana’s palace (the only living historical museum in Nigeria), eat Starch and Banga soup and just enjoy the vibe. This way, your trip is a mixture of relaxation, history and local cuisine.

To get to Abraka, the quickest route would be to fly to Warri and make the 1 hour drive down there.

Kano State – This is the 2nd largest City in Nigeria and the commercial nerve center of the North. Best part is, it is steeped in a lot of history. Visit this ancient City with us and find out what makes it such an amazing place. From the Kano wall ruins to the tie and dye pits, the museum to the Emir’s Palace, you are sure to love it.
The Kofar Mata dye pits were created over 500 years ago and can be found in the City center. It is still in use today with the same techniques being passed down. Upon visitation, if you are lucky you could get a live demonstration.

Although the walls lay in ruins, the Kano walls when first created were built to protect the inhabitants of the ancient city. Other places to visit include Giddam Makama Museum, the Emir’s Palace, Kano Zoo, Kurmi Market and Goron Dutse Hills.

So visit, soak in some history, culture and the sights and sounds of Kano.

Kwara State – They don’t call this place the State of Harmony for no reason. Everyone is super friendly and helpful; there is literally always a smile on the face of anyone you speak to. What is there to see in Kwara you might ask? Well let’s help you out with that!

Owu falls: This is one of the highest and most spectacular waterfalls in Nigeria. It is often described as the ‘Wonder in the wilderness’ as there is a hike to get to the falls. With a fall of 330m the hike is well worth it.

Esie Museum: This was the first museum to be established in Nigeria. It is said to have the largest soapstone images in the world. Visiting is definitely creepy and hearing the stories is even worse but you cannot go to Kwara without heading there.

Dada Pottery: This is the largest traditional pottery workshop in Nigeria. There is an assortment of pottery products that range from water storage vessels to cooking utensils as well as decorative pottery items are produced. It is said to be as old as Ilorin itself and if you get there on time and you aren’t in a hurry, you can watch the women at work.

You can also throw in the University of Ilorin zoo and get on the canopy walk.

One thing is clear, Kwara might not be one of the famous tourist destinations in Nigeria, but don’t sleep on it either.

Kogi State – Lokoja (the capital) is a haven of history; from Mount Patti (which is the location where Flora Shaw got the name Nigeria) to the first Anglican Church in Northern Nigeria, it is a state you absolutely must visit.
Hike up Mount Patti (or drive if you’re feeling lazy) and enjoy the views. You will also see Lord Luggard’s first office and have a little peak into it. Something not everyone is aware of is that you can take a boat ride on the famous River Niger and Benue. I suggest you book this ride through the navy, that way your safety is ensured.

If you are not too creeped out, you should head to the cemetery which is the largest cemetery in Nigeria in terms of being the resting place for missionaries and soldiers.

To be honest there is definitely a lot to do in Kogi State but you can start with these.

Cross River State – It shouldn’t surprise anyone that this is on the list. From Obudu to Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the Slave Trade Museum to the Calabar Festival in December, there is a plethora of reasons to visit this State.
We are very sure Cross River is on everyone’s list even if it is only because of Obudu or Agbokim Falls, visiting isn’t a very hard sell.

Obudu has the beautiful mountain ranges and various waterfalls, the Calabar festival brings people from ALL over the world and Agbokim falls is such a hidden gem. Afi Mountain allows you roam freely amongst Drill monkeys and the Slave Trade Museum doesn’t need any introduction.

The only question left would be when you are heading there?

So now that we have given you a few suggestions, which will you be picking? In my opinion, choose all and make it a fun filled 2019!

Music/Radio / 5 Questions Emerging Artists Should Ask Themselves Before Hiring A Publicist by magazineguy(m): 6:29pm On Feb 19, 2019
Every artist wants to find success in their career, but the path to success is rarely the same. What works for one artist or group may not work for another and vice versa.

For example, some artists get ahead with the help of publicist who uses their connections to land press opportunities that offer exposure which aide in the development of an audience. Other artists choose to promote themselves, and in doing so often find a quicker route to connecting with listeners. One way is not better than the other. Both offer success, though how it comes and what comes with may vary greatly.

The vast majority of up and coming talent we engage with mention their desire to find a publicist. Most know what publicists do or at least have some understanding of their role, but very few seem to grasp their role in determining whether or not a publicity campaign will succeed. With that in mind, we put together questions that every artist should ask themselves before investing in PR for their career.

Is my career even at a point where I need a publicist?

The idea of having someone in your life who spends a part of their day doing whatever they can to get the word out about your efforts sounds like a smart decision, but unless you have something worthwhile to share with the world you’re going to end up wasting a lot of money. Focus on creating the best album/single/video you possibly can, which will likely not be your first release, and then think about bringing in someone to help promote. While many professional publicists will tell an artist if they think the artist is not ready for such a business relationship, there are a number of those out there who will happily take your money and never look back. It’s not on them to have something worth sharing; it’s on you.

Can I financially afford a publicist right now?

This may seem like a rather obvious statement, but the truth is many artists do not fully understand the costs associated with having a publicist. Most PR firms require a minimum commitment of 3-months for any project, regardless of whether it’s an album, video, or single. That means for three months you are expected to pay whatever price you negotiate at the time of signing, and failure to do so will likely result in monetary penalties being issued against your group. Avoid this unnecessary trouble (not to mention looking amateur to industry professionals) and double-check your finances before seeking representation. Set a budget and work to find someone who offers you the most ‘bang for your buck.’

What am I hoping to accomplish with this campaign, and do I need a publicist to pull it off?

It’s common sense that artists and bands hoping to promote their new releases turn to publicists to help get the word out, but depending on your situation you may be able to handle marketing perfectly fine on your own. There are a growing number of articles and sites dedicated to empowering independent artists and if you’re willing to put in the work yourself, it’s reasonable to assume you can gain at least a small amount of press on your own. Blogs and smaller publications usually post their contact information online, and by reading up on PR tactics, anyone can craft a pitch letter.

Furthermore, you need to know what you hope to achieve with a campaign. Getting the word out about something is too vague. Do you want more followers? one-thousand plays in the first twenty-four hours of release? Ten interviews a month? All that and more? Make a list of goals and ask yourself if you possess the knowledge and means to achieve them on your own.

Do I have high-quality promotional materials ready to go (masters, photos, etc.)?

Publicists spend their day trying to get the word out about their clients, but that does not mean they’re going to create promotional materials to help get the job done. As the client, it is on you to provide your publicist with everything they need to promote your efforts, and it should go without saying that quality plays a big role in whether or not journalists give you some of their oh-so-rare free time. Before you even consider bringing someone else into your career, make sure you have quality materials you want to be shared with the world. If you turn in mediocre media, the returns will likely be mediocre as well. Publicists work with what they’re given, so be sure you give yours the best material you possibly can.

What marketing ideas do I have for the release of my album/music video?

This is probably the most important part of this entire list because it’s the area artists most often overlook. Publicists can make amazing things happen for your career, but without guidance and direction from you, they will have no idea what it is you’re trying to convey with your art. This is why when deciding to bring on a publicist it is imperative that you first come up with your own set of goals and ideas for the release. Publicists want to help you, not do the work for you, and starting the relationship with a wealth of ideas on deck will simplify the promotional efforts on their end. By knowing what you expect, publicists can work with you to craft a campaign that’s designed to accomplish your specific goals, and that will lead to better results down the line.
