All religion were founded by early men and imposed on their subject by force. On the other hand, I cannot beat my chest and say there is no remote possibility of a god because the world is too complex to analyse with the current level of scientific advancement. Science may discover the origin of life in the future but as at now, there is nothing close to that.
Concerning evolution theory, I believe in the law of natural selection but not evolution as presented because there is no absolute evidence besides discovered ancient fossils with similar features to man. I have been to several Geology field trips in Germany, Belgium and Oman. Though most Geology theories predict occurrences with absolute certainty, I can tell you that Geologist sometimes try to see what doesn't exist just to justify their theories.
Also, I have been an agnostic for 16 years. You are just a baby in your new found believe and still have along way to go. You still have youthful exuberance and need more time to mature.

What if I tell you I am an agnostic and I don't believe in the big bang theory and I am an Engineer with strong science and geology background up to masters degree level? Big bang theory is still at developmental stage and doesn't have enough evidence for you to come out and beat your chest about your knowledge of the origin of life. Many scientist don't accept it because it doest not have close to absolute certainty just like the existence of god cannot be proven by any religion.
Origin of life is a mystery which for now, nobody be it scientist or theist can prove with absolute certainty. Believing the big bang story at this stage is not different from believing in religious teachings which to me are not rational.

vedaxcool: I happened to watch a film titled the RITE, whose producers claimed was inspired by real life events. The Film central theme is about exorcism by catholics priests.

The film talks about a man who became a priest because he was running away from "something". The man was appointed a priest and then the story goes on the man was a skeptic even before becoming a priest he did not believe there is God and etc.

Well after becoming a priest he wrote his resignation letter and sent it to the head priest in his area . . . Events occurred which made him agree to go for an exorcism course in rome.

To cut the long story short, during the course of exorcising the priest that trained him , he became convinced that God really existed and that the reason why he was an atheist is that he had to bear the dreadful sight of his mum being in coma and later on dying in coma. He carried a deep anger and resentment towards God for this. And he also resented his dad because of this.

We can say some people actually become atheists not as a result of any serious thinking but as a result of life's frustration. Now some atheists on NL sometime show this sort of tendency where u read their strange (in)capacity to reason.

Its so funny that being a Muslim, you don't believe in Christianity and your religion(Islam) claims that they(Christians) will go to hell for not accepting Mohammed as a prophet of god. So why using Christianity as a tool to determine the reason for people choosing not to accept one of the numerous religions since you don't believe in their teachings? I worked with a couple of NNPC staff (NAPIMS), seconded to the drilling department of the company I worked in Nigeria and I must say they dont know anything in comparison with the number of years experience they claim. I think its a career killer to go there if you have a better option. People that work there retire and cannot work elsewhere cos they are not competitive in knowledge at retirement.

Salary abroad is really not so fantastic compared to what you'll get in Nigeria. However, after working in Europe/ America or Middle East for sometime, it makes you highly exposed, experienced and marketable which I think is the major benefit of working outside Nigeria. The people earning the big salaries are in Africa and Middle East

Atheists are not the supposed lzy people you spoke about who fall into the hands of wrong pastors who teach them the diluted word of God, No. They are rather people who have both the mental and physical courage to challenge the dogma fed to them since childhood. They are people who are hard working enough to go into Indepth research into the origins of what is being taught. You assertions could have been partially correct if you localised the reason to Nigeria because your position implies that all athiests were formally christians. The atheistic/gnostic positions stem from the fact that people have realised that wether or not you believe in God, What will be will be. I have seen unbelievers and believers alike live fulfilled lives and I have also seen believers and non believers too who lives lives that need a lot of help. I then ask myself the question what really does anyone need God for apart from the promise of heaven or hell which no one has any proof of? Whether or not there is belief in God, good people will still be good and bad people will still be bad. How many complicated disease are detected in Nigeria? When someone have cancer and cannot be detected by the convectional means which the Nigerian doctors uses in treating people, they say the problem is spiritual attack. Enigma: You have a huge point here. In fact, several years ago, I put exactly the same point to some American "fundamentalist" Pentecostal Christians and it totally stumped them and stopped them in their tracks.

Some of the questions I put to them then were based on this hypothetical scenario: we have a non-Christian man who has four wives and children by each wife; they all live together under one roof (yes, it is possible and actually happens still in Nigeria); he and his family become converted to Christianity. What are they now to do? In particular, what is the man to do?

1. Which wife should he divorce?

2. Let's say he keeps the senior wife and divorces the rest, what about what the Bible states that God "hates divorce"?

3. So, is he to kick the other wives out of the household?

4. So is he to kick the children by the other wives away from the home, away from under his roof?

5. Is it conceivable that he and his family can be welcomed into the church and accepted just as they are?

That is why I said holy books including Bible and Quran are confusion document on every subject in life. People should be free to live their life they way they want to.

I believe in being submissive o, but some men can take it to the extreme. My mum and sisters keep telling me there's nothing in marriage and we single girls shouldn't be desperate to rush in. And I saw for a fact that my dad wasn't the best of husbands.

I recently left a relationship where the guy was overbearing. He wanted things done his way ALL THE TIME. I had to think of ways to make him happy always and each time he brought up the subject of marriage I froze. I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life with him.

I realy will love to engage you here on NL if you have got the time. I am not an atheist myself but lately I have had many reasons to doubt the authenticity of Christianity giving the very many inconsistencies that one finds in the bible and passages and the claims of the writers especially those of Paul that can't be substantiated.
Christianity today is cash and carry and that to me has left me bewildered and hateful of so many nonesense that is preached in churches today. Seriously, if a lot of christians will be bold enough to read about the history of the church, a lot of us will end up having doubts about what we have hitherto known as the truth.

olu16: hello @T22! so ive been off for a bit. finally decided to go for reservoir engineering OR process and polymer engineering. IFP offers both. but i havent seen any american or european school that offers msc reservoir engineering on its own, all ive found is pet engr and oil and gas engineering. but what do you guys think about the courses?

As someone with zero experience, I would advice you go for Petroleum Engineering to get a general overview of the oil and gas business before you specialize. Petroleum Engineering gives you better knowledge of Production, Drilling and Reservoir Engineering. You can apply for job in any of those three categories with you Petroleum Engineering degree but with Reservoir Engineering, you are already restricting yourself because you will not do much in Drilling and Production when you study Reservoir Engineering making it difficult for you to compete for non Reservoir Engineering jobs. Specializing at the early stage of your career is dangerous because it limits your options. Petroleum Engineering as a degree is already restrictive, so going further into Reservoir Engineering will further limit your options after graduation.

Check out in all countries of the world espcially in the developed world whenever there is danger they give so much attention to warning so its not abnormal when you see us warn about hell. Again if you want know which God is real i advice you to go into your closet and and ask the real God to manifest himself to you. A personal encounter with God will convince you more than any thing we can tell you here. We know Banom in this nairaland how he experienced a personal encounter with God. Since then till now we all can see that he is a child of God. Pls do same and make your decisions after.
