naijababe: I am sure you mean expats as in expatriate here, anyway $2000 is the absolute maximum day rate anyone can earn now and drillers / reservoir engineers with vast experience in simulation are the only ones who fall in this category to my knowledge. The only other way to earn mega buck is in Project Management and the bucks in that category is out of this world. That's where I'm headed grin

Short true story:

My hubby's previous boss managed a project which was successful and delievered to schedule, believe it or not, he earned 5% of the contract value as his bonus whilst my hubby only got a few thousand £ ( single digit o)!
I had a Drilling Superintendent earning up to $3000 per day, so people earn more than $2000. Also, I meant expat.
CareerRe: GTBank Job Or Masters Degree? by 2good(m): 1:23pm On May 12, 2012
tanimola22: I asked you what next because I wanted to know whether or not you have designed an excellent hedge against the unfavorably volatile job market in the UK and other parts of the world. From your answer, you have none. I might be wrong though.

I asked whether it's a top 5 US or UK school because I wanted to gauge your desirability to employers upon your graduation. Unfortunately, your answer shows that you might be no different from other unemployed naija graduates, who have very fancy UK degrees which cost close to 15K, if you went to study in the UK.

To make matters worse, you want to go and study a course that is a one way, a course that favors mostly professionals who have had years of solid professional experience. A course that will not give you an edge to immediately pursue a PhD just in case the job won't just come.

There is one fact that you must always bear in mind, and it is that 'foreign universities will continue to admit students no matter how old the students are'. Therefore, If I were you, I would definitely accept the GT offer, work for some years and then jet out for further studies, if I still deem it necessary. This way, I would stand a better chance of getting into a nicer school, in fact an Ivy league or something very close to it. This way, I would be solid, desirable enough and also stand a better chance of landing an awesome job, after graduation, because of my previous work experience which must surely be of immense advantage to me. I am not saying that one is certain of landing one's dream job just because one has had a solid professional experience. My point is that your chances are much higher if you have a solid work experience plus a top MBA degree.

If I really hate bank job and want to neglect the GT offer for further studies abroad, a strategy I would employ is to simply change courses. I would go for an MSc program instead of an MBA program. I would then make sure I aim to get the best possible grades I can get. This will help me in two ways. First, it will help land me job interviews and I will have something to brag about during the job interviews. Second, I will be competitive to get fully funded PhD positions just in case the ideal job does not come after about 2 years of searching. I think you get my drift.

A lot of naija people are unemployed and stuck in Lagos and London and New York and elsewhere because their Master's degrees are so poor that nobody would believe they can cope with PhD level courses and research. Such people thought going abroad and getting 'any' oyinbo kpali would give them jobs at Total, Mobil, Chevron, Davidson Kempner Advisers and Fortress Investment etc. Unfortunately, many of them are not smiling today.

I will leave you to ponder over my submission and come to a conclusion by yourself, a conclusion that will maximize your own professional payoff.

T22.
Very True. I always tell people that want to study Petroleum Engineering in the UK for example that if they are not going to Imperial College, forget about it cause it is very difficult getting a job. Imperial College does not guarantee you in anyway, but it gives you an edge cos you are interviewed by lots of companies before graduation.
Same should apply to you. I think an MBA with no work experience is close to a waste. Worst of all you're going to a lowly rated school which is Hull. Best thing is to work, get some experience and you'll get a better opportunity if you go for your masters degree in the future. Every employer prefers someone that have atleast some basic level of work experience.

Jarus: First and foremost, let's not create an impression that O&G is the only sector you can earn big dough. You can do so in any sector, with diligence and hard/smart work. I have a bro in Investment Banking that, after 12 years of work, is worth far more than most of his friends that started in O&G at about same time. In fact, there is a higher tendency to lively extravagantly as a young O&G guy and squander your income and not save or invest.

That said, clearly the Engineers/Geologists etc have more spaces than those of us with Finance background. A 200-staff strong oil company may not have up to 20 Finance staff. In my new coy, staff strenght is 100+, we are not up to 15 in Finance. Plus it's a sector with low turnover of staff, people hardly leave, that's why you see a man that has spent 30 years in Shell, Mobil etc, so space is not freed up.

But the good thing is most of these IOCs have a graduate program, and to a large extent merit-driven. Again, space is the issue. There may not be more than 3-5 Finance/Economics/Commercial spaces. So that's competitive, when you have hundreds of equally qualified folks competing for the space. You just have to equip yourself with test and interview taking skills, plus luck. For a Finance hopeful, I advise you start with all these Audit firms, PwC, KPMG, and Deloitte in particular, or a Nigerian oil company like Oando, Conoil, Zenon, etc, which though are less rewarding, can boost your CV and industry knowledge; which you can later leverage on to enter the big IOCs.

As for having foreign degrees, it's not compulsory. The two friends I have in Shell got no more than Bsc Econs from Ife(with First Class though), no ICAN, no other cert, except one on CFA2, and few months experience in IB. If the process is merit-driven, you will have equal chance to prove yourself against the foreign grads.
Having a foreign experience is an advantage when you want to break into the industry as an experienced hand. I intend spending like 8-10 years in Europe, Middle East and the Americas after which I will go back to Nigeria where the money really lies and do contract. The main people earning the money are the experts many of whom earn as much as $2000 per day and are rotating 28 days on and 28 days off. That is where I am working towards and I don't think any company in Nigeria can pay close to that. But you have to be in the technical field to get that kind of remuneration most times.

italo: Not all "individuals" think killing is bad. So what if I felt that it were right for me to kill you because you are a nuisance, would that be okay? What about someone like Hitler who felt justified in killing the Jews in their millions? Was that okay?

There are families that kill and teach their Children to kill their rivals in business, relationships etc, for example, The Mafia. Would that make it right, for children of such families to kill?

What about those people from communities where they kill seven people as part of the ritual to bury a king? Is it right then, since they learnt it from "environment", "culture"?

Do we not know many governments like The Gaddafi government that encouraged killing of innocent citizens? The Taliban is also another government that legalized killing of innocent people. Do you think such killing is okay, only because its backed by government "law"?

The Bible didn't lie! You lie!.. And I have proved that in this post. Now do you agree that you are wrong on who you say defines what is good and bad? Meaning you cannot know what is good and bad.
You are really pathetic. Africa can never progress with people like you dominating the continent. Can't believe someone can be this backward in reasoning. I have a Deeper Life friend who was able to go to Cambridge University through the Gate's Foundation. Which pastor or church in this world give much to charity as Bill Gate through his foundation? This guy was once worth over 100 billion but have given out bulk of it to charity and you're here talking nonsense just to defend your religion. Remember that he eradicated polio from India through his financial contribution to the polio course.

I guess I was lucky. When I was in final year in Unilag, couple of companies came around and I passed their test including Citi Bank. Also b4 NYSC I passed the GT Bank test and wasn't interviewed until I was 6 months into my NYSC after which I was given an offer, so 6 months b4 end of NYSC I had the GT Bank job. I joined GT Bank training school 2 weeks after end of NYSC after which Citibank called me for an interview. I was offered the Citibank job and left GT bank training school after six week to resume with Citibank, a move I later regretted.
I am currently n my 5th job since starting with GT Bank. 3 banks and 2 Oil companies all happening within 7 years. I had to remove GT Bank and Citi Bank from my CV because I felt it made me look unserious and always jumping from one company to another.

CareerRe: What SHELL Internship Is All About by 2good(m): 8:42am On May 08, 2012
I did my internship in Shell Nigeria in 2004. Back then, it was 100% man no man or atleast you need to be recommended by some top Shell boss but I dont know if things have changed now. The worst thing about doing internship in Shell is that you hardly learn anything but you're instead used as an educated messenger, doing the errands of your bosses and hardly ever adding technical knowledge to your life. It is only on very few occasion that you get to be involved in technical stuffs like going to the field and it has alot to do with how well you push and whether your boss likes you or you have someone up there interceding on your behalf. In summary, they don't have a structured training for interns. You only brag amongst your friend you're doing an internship in Shell, enter their staff bus to work and are fed good food everyday. I presently don't know how much they pay but back then, it was meagre 5,000 naira.
If you have an option to do an internship in a smaller company that will expose you to technical knowledge, I'll recommend you go for it. The big operators are just there for bragging when it comes to internship

AFOLS: Hi NLers, there is this girl I love and intend to get married to, we used to attend same church before.
I got attracted to her about a year ago and told her I'll like to have a meaningful relationship with her.
She Said I shld b sure God is leading me.
I did 7days fasting/prayer and God still gave me more +ive signs I'm on the right path.
Now, 4 d past 1yr, she said God did not confirm to her after she prayed but God revealed smone else to her but the person has not approached her concerning relationship issue.
Lastly I travelled to lagos 4 a training and also 2 see her then we got talking and she told me
"I DON'T LIKE YOU".
Right now I'm down spirited, pls give kind suggestions of what I can do 2 keep my head up and high and also win her love.
God have no say in the affairs of man. It was your imagination that revealed her to you not god. The way out is to leave the above girl alone and look for another girl. Common there are so many girls out there that you don't need to kill yourself over someone that told you categorically that she doesn't like you

Christianity EtcRe: I Abandoned Religion And God Today. I'm Free. by 2good(m): 6:42pm On May 06, 2012
larytz: Hello everyone iv known nl for yrs but I never went through it enough to get tn this section. I was more interested in jobs and news. I'm however fascinated by how many people have finally woken up to reality. I grew up under a liberal muslim family though we studied the tira,it was never forced on us. I also lived with relatives who where very fanatical and out rightly hated anything that wasn't islamic. They used all things possible to relate anything good to islam. I was opportune to travel to the uk as a child in the 80's and I lived there for about 4yrs, there was something I noticed, I never came across anybody that was christian. Not that they wasn't any,I just didn't see them push it to my face, not on tv not in school not even at home. Even during x-mass and new year.they celebrated santa clues but no jesus. When I got back to nig. I spent sometime in mayflower school in ikenne. That was where I first encountered atheism. It was an escape from the fear religion always created in my mind at home. The school banned any form of religion and even called It cultism. The punishment for that crime was out right dismissal. You would think parents would take their children out of there, but no in fact you had to be exceptional to get admission because the demand to enroll there was always very high every year. My whole life I lived with the fact that religion simply breads hatred, greed, slavery, and constant brain washing. I feel so free whenever I don't have to be confronted by it. The moment I found out on nl that there where more pple like me I was so excited I have been reading all the threads and arguments and its always funny how the theists always sound like someone telling me that father chris mass was going to bring my present down the chimney on xmas s eve. Hahaha. The more they talk about their religion and make threats of hell and death the more stupid and ignorant they sound. In the process they even insult each other's religion as if they are all not in the same wonderland. The moment religion is eradicated from this world that's when there will be peace in the world. I'm here now oh. And I'm ready to prove that there is no god or gods or whatever your colonial masters and forefathers have been feeding your brains with.
You're welcome

All these atheists, agnostic and so on, I believe are in same boat. Different but still very similar. The little distinctions notwithstanding.
very true. We reason in the same direction except the atheist is a little bit to the extreme
Christianity EtcRe: Confusing Atheism And Agnosticism by 2good(m): 5:03pm On May 06, 2012
plaetton: An agnostic is an athiests who still in the closet. For a long time, I called myself an agnostic because, subconsciously, I was afraid to admit or face the facts that god might simply not exist. Over time, I began to accept the the existence of god as a NOTION rather than as a fact.
No disrepect to agnostics, but I think its a state of confusion where one feels safe to be neutral. Once you reject the judeo-christian concepts of devinity, even if you still hold on to the belief in a supreme creator and source of all things,as long as you agree that it is just a NOTION, then we are all on the same side.lol.
I disagree with you. I am agnostic and completely debunk all religious gods because they are illogical to accept based on rational reasoning. However, I have no proof that there is no possibility of a supreme being out there and if he exist, I don't give a damn. So because I refused to accept religion as a possible solution to something I'm not 100% sure of, I am an agnostic or better still, atheistic agnostic.

lekkie073: all d same, capitalism and socialism are two sides of a coin.....one is not absolutely superior to the other. And einstein supporting socialism doesnt make him a stupid person.
Absolute capitalism and absolute socialism practised in the old Soviet Union are both disastrous. If you've toured Eastern and Western Germany, you will see how disastrous absolute socialism can be as a result of its practice in the Eastern part of Germany after it was partitioned by the Allied force at the end of WW 2. I spent a couple of days in the east and believe me, there're lots of dilapidated and abandoned buildings with few industries in East Germany with many cities scanty because their inhabitants have relocated to the more prosperous West in search of better life. That is what just 46 years practice of communism can do to a country.
You can also see the same problem between North and South Korea. The North is suffering from extreme poverty while the South is prosperous economically because one country accepted socialism while the other embraced government controlled capitalism.
China have stopped practising absolute socialism that was introduced by Chairman Mao that is why they are able to churn out lots of Billionaires and currently have a prosperous and growing economy. Socialism stagnate growth and kills competition.

logicboy: Please read about human transitional fossils. I'm tired of posting the same thing over and over again. Evolution is a well grounded theory accepted by most scienitsts. Let me direct you to my previous post;
Evolution theory is still not based on 100% fact. Anybody can decide to disbelieve the theory just like many of use refuses to accept the creationist theory. If you ask me about origin of life, my answer will be simple. I dont know and not sure from all logical reason but on comparison, evolution makes more sense than creationist theory. However, the theory of natural selection makes perfect sense and can be used to explain changes in the behaviour of natural species based on the environment they find themselves. Try not to force the evolution theory on people because that is not what Atheism/ Agnosticism is about. It is about refusing to believe in god and treating things with an open mind, accepting only things that are logical. Forcing people to believe the evolution theory is thesame as Christians and Muslim forcing you to believe creationist theory.
To explain what science is about, the most simple example is if you put a blue litmus paper in an acid, it will turn red while a red litmus paper on coming in contact with a base, turns blue. If you try the experiment 1 million times, you will get thesame result atleast 90% of the time with the 10% allowing for some slight deviation or abnormal behaviour. So a fact is a fact and can hardly be faulted. Another example is the earth is round. It is a fact from photo evidence and cannot be faulted. Evolution theory on the other hands is not a fact.
