PoliticsRe: If Havard Was Named After John Harvard What The Hec About Unilag by 2good(m): 10:27am On Jun 07, 2012
denko: In 1636, a university called the New College was established by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. By 1639, the college was as a mark of honour renamed after John Harvard, the then deceased wealthy Charlestown minister, who bequeathed half of his huge monetary estate and his very big library to the college. That was how the highly revered Harvard University came into being. Can anyone now say that the renaming of that institution after an individual diminished its status among global citadels of learning? Of course, New College despite answering an individual name today is one of the most profound and best universities in the world.
Your analogy is completely out of place. What exactly did MKO do for Unilag? You don't politicize University because the career and future of many people depends on it. Nigerian politicians are completely out of touch with what is happening to the common man. There are better things to be fighting for and not ensuring a University is renamed. The Alumni and students have expressed their disapproval with the new name, what else does the politicians want? Are they not there to serve the people?

PoliticsRe: Who Closed The Airspace On Sunday 3 June 2012? Is 1st Lady For Dana Crash? by 2good(m): 7:56pm On Jun 05, 2012
I strongly believe the walton1 guy is on point. In as much as I dislike GEJ, it is still not a good reason to propagate wrong news to the public. As far as I know about the aviation industry as a frequent flyer, before flight departure you know when you are going to land and all things being equal, the difference in time is not usually more than + or - 10mins. No president will keep people roaming an airspace just because his wife want to leave the airport 2hrs later. Also airport is not like road that can be closed down because of the presence of a dignitary. Alot of influential people fly all the time that it will be an insult to keep them waiting because of a first lady who is just a figurehead in government. This information is not good for the public and certainly not what we need now.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Citizens Are The Problems Of Nigeria NOT The Government by 2good(m): 8:07am On Jun 05, 2012
acidtalk: This thread might be offensive to. A whole lot of people and I will understand why.

We (the citizens and common man) are the main cause why Nigeria over the years of Independence till date keeps getting worse.

We play sentiments in anything and everything we do. In choosing a Leader, awarding contract and even correctly our corrupt politicians.

Must we wait for things to deteriorate before taking action? Must disaster happen before we realize there are pending reports on that same issue we refused or forgot to tackle before this present disaster?

* Plane Crash : I can vividly remember after the 2005 Bellview and Sosoliso plane crashes, Obasanjo setup a committee to look at the possible causes of the aviation disaster something Kema Chikwe the then Aviation Minister passed later to Fani Kayode. Almost 10years since then no report was made. Now Jonathan will setup another committee for the same issue thereby wasting billions of naira of tax payers money to fund.

*Power : It would be like counting the strands of hair on a ladies head if we want to remember how many committees have been setup over the years to look into possible ways of improving power supply in this country. Yet the only thing we hear is Power Holdings (former NEPA) increasing power tariffs each passing month to enable have steady power. Yet these same Nigeria keep quiet and hope for a "better day".

*Sports : the only uniting factor of the country is absolutely nothing to talk about. Nigerians only remember the urgent need for a foreign or indigenous coach few months to tournaments. Forgetting that both the Ministry of Sports and NFF have thousands of committee that have been looking into developing sports (most especially football) in these country.

*Oil (Petroleum) : nothing to write home about this, almost every first day of every year this is what Nigerian Government gives us as New Year present (increase in fuel price). People protest for a few days then return to their work without putting pressure on the government to know what such monies are used for.

On and on the list goes....

Before blaming the government next time, thing deep if you have made an effort to make your government accountable at anytime.

Its like leaving your doors and windows open each night and I thief comes in to steal. After discovering this in the morning all you do is shout and then make the same mistake. Who is to be blamed? You or the thief in question.
While I agree with you 100%, a strong leader can bring about a change and force the people to accept it by force for the good of the people using strong government institutions. Nigeria at the current stage need such a strong leader because the culture of the country over time have been completely destroyed such that people are worshipped for their success irrespective of how they make their wealth, parent and society put pressure on their children making these children to be ready to go any length to be successful,Another major problem is the level of religious fanaticism which makes people to throw away reason in making decision just because their pastor said god said so. A strong leader is needed to first get rid of all the old politicians because I strongly believe that without purging most of the old guards in Nigeria, nothing will change. The influence of these corrupt old politicians permeates into every sector of the economy such that if they are not purged out, no messiah can save us.

guonno: Waste of money. 5 million is such a huge amount of money that if they invest it in that secondaty school called a university, it would produce lots of good students. First class doesnt mean a thing to me. Go and check most first class materials, and u will be baffled how they are doing. Delta state is good at trowing money around. Niger deltan militants is the worst, they is no difference between what they are doing there and the money our presidos and excos has "embezzlemented" fake government. ifeci: I will tell u a story because ur case is more than we think. the story goes thus;

In Campinas, Brazil a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend.....
The mother accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter holding her hand, who was already seated in the car:

"My Daughter, Go With God And May He Protect You.."
She responded: "Only If He (God) Travels In The Trunk, Cause Inside Here.....It's Already Full "

Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died,
the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact.

The police said there was no way the trunk could have remained intact. To their surprise, inside the trunk was a crate of eggs, none was broken .
Are you still circulating this old propaganda? I read this almost 10 years ago. gosh!

mazaje: Religion always wins. . . .Christians are now throwing the bible under the bus. . .

Mark 16: 17-18 reads, "And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

The guy out of his faith followed what the bible said and it failed him as always. . .Now the people here are just blabbing any how. . .The same people will talk about extra ordinary healing like their god rising people from the dead etc but when you tell ask them about clear cut healing, like healing of amputees and restoring their amputated limbs back the same goons will begin to blab. . .religion always wins. . .People will always provide excuses for their god even when his alleged word fails. . . .Religion is pure delusion. .
Thank you Mazaje. They are good at selectively picking bible verses to defend their claims and refuse to accept verses when negative event occurs. Religion basically shut the objective reasoning capacity of the brain

SefB: Hello 2 good,

You mentionedin a post that u and SOME OF ur friends got scholarship. Hw did u do that? PTDF?
PLS HELP A SISTER OUT.

plus what schoold od u suggest? I studied petroleum engineering BSC, 2:1
Been working for about 18months now and intent to go to school nexy year.
Where do u suggest nd what course?
Ok first most of my friend that studied here made 1st class in their Bachelors studies in Nigeria. I made a 2-1 with a GP of above 4 point. The scholarship we all got is not PTDF but some other scholarship sponsored by either company, the university or the Dutch government. One of my friend got a scholarship from Shell Netherlands, myself and another got a scholarship called the Netherlands Fellowship Program(NFP) that requires you to have some work experience and also studying a course relevant to the development of your country in a Dutch university. The guy who got Shell scholarship studied Geophysics and current have a job with Statoil Norway. The other one that got NFP scholarship is working for a servicing company as a Production log analyst in Belgium. The friend working in Schlumberger got a partial scholarship from the Petroleum Engineering department. Every one of us studied at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. Besides the Geophysics guy, we all studied Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience.
The truth about scholarship is you have to research yourself and apply. There is no guarantee of getting the scholarship but you just have to apply for as much as you see and bear in mind that most times you compete with people globally for scholarship. About getting job, several companies come to campus to recruit as most of us got our job through the campus recruitment. However, getting a job have alot to do with yourself and not just going to a university. Most of these guys are very smart above the average Nigerian and are able to convince their potential employer that they are qualified to be employed because you have to compete with European citizen and the general rule is European first before non-Europeans but at thesame time, the companies will hire you if you can prove to them that you are good and also the class size is small. We were like 18 in my masters class from like 12 different countries and job placement was like 80% before graduation.
But I will still recommend you go to an American University to study preferable U Texas @ Austin, Texas A&M, Louisiana State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Houiston and Colorado School of Mines. Jobs are easier to get in the oil and gas industry in the US because there are more oil and gas companies in the US than any other country and the schools I mentioned above organise on campus recruitment which is a big advantage as you get to be interviewed by several companies before you graduate and it is easier getting a job on campus than after graduation. UK is a no no for me because there are so many Nigerians to compete with and the UK economy is struggling.
Christianity Etc'serpent-handling' West Virginia Pastor Dies From Snake Bite by 2good(op): 7:59am On May 31, 2012
A "serpent-handling" West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before.

Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event.

"I am looking for a great time this Sunday," Wolford wrote May 22, according to the Washington Post. "It is going to be a homecoming like the old days. Good 'ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers."

Robin Vanover, Wolford's sister, told the Washington Post that 30 minutes into the outdoor service, Wolford passed around a poisonous timber rattlesnake, which eventually bit him.

"He laid it on the ground," Vanover said in the interview, "and he sat down next to the snake, and it bit him on the thigh."

Vanover said Wolford was then transported to a family member's home in Bluefield about 80 miles away to recover. But as the situation worsened, he was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Jim Shires, owner of the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield, told ABC News that Wolford died Monday. Wolford's church, the Apostolic House of the Lord Jesus in Matoaka, will host a viewing Friday and a funeral service Saturday morning. Wolford will be buried at the Hicks Family Plot in Phelps, Ky.

Officials at the Panther Wildlife Management Area had been unaware of Sunday's event until they were notified by callers after the service.

"We did not know that this event was happening, and if we had known about it or if we had been asked for permission, permission would not have been granted," Hoy Murphy, public information officer for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, told ABC News.

Hoy said West Virginia state park rules prohibit animals other than dogs and cats on the property.

While snake-handling is legal in West Virginia, other Appalachian states, including Kentucky and Tennessee, have banned the practice in public spaces.

Snake-handlers point to scripture as evidence that God calls them to engage in such a practice to show their faith in him.

Wolford told the Washington Post magazine in 2011 that he is carrying on the tradition of his ancestors by engaging in snake handling.

"Anybody can do it that believes it," Wolford said. "Jesus said, 'These signs shall follow them which believe.' This is a sign to show people that God has the power."

Wolford said watched his own father die at the age of 39 after a rattlesnake bit him during a similar service.

"He lived 101/2 hours," Wolford told the Washington Post Magazine. "When he got bit, he said he wanted to die in the church. Three hours after he was bitten, his kidneys shut down. After a while, your heart stops. I hated to see him go, but he died for what he believed in.

"I know it's real; it is the power of God," Wolford told the Washington Post Magazine last year. "If I didn't do it, if I'd never gotten back involved, it'd be the same as denying the power and saying it was not real."

PoliticsRe: Wole Soyinka Opposes UNILAG/MAU Renaming by 2good(m): 4:38am On May 31, 2012
odumorun 1: I strongly disagree with Wole Soyinka on this.

The furore regarding the renaming of Unilag is elitist posturing of the worst kind, dressed up in the garb of democratic protestation. This has nothing to do with anger that the council of the university was not consulted. The university and its senate and governing council do not fund the school. The school is funded by the federal government from the federal purse representing millions of hardworking Nigerians most of whose kids will never enjoy the benfit of a university education let alone a prestigious one like Unilag.

The storm in a tea cup is another example of middle class Nigerians, particularly yoruba ones (the most snobbish and self regarding version and yes i am a Yoruba) refusing to be associated with a person largely revered by the poorer classes. The same happened when Uiversity of Ife was renamed in 1987 in honour of Obafemi Awolowo, when a few hundred students largely of middle class origin demonstrated their objection, while the poor people in the town, carpentars, shoe makers, tailors and others who benefited from awo's reforms celebrated.

This is all about a few priviledged and educated yoruba people wanting to retain what they see as an eleitis label placing them apart from the majority of the population whom they secretly despise. If the school had been named after Barack Obama would they be protesting, even if it was done without consultation - Of course they wouldn't - they'll probably be fantasising about getting an easy visa ride in the American embassy.

Wole Soyinka is a radical and progressive Nigerian but his elitism is a well known flaw which is why he has never inspite of his undoubted courage been able to buod a mass following for his ideas.

Unilag is funded by the majority of the people of this country, not the students or their lecturers. Most ordiany Nigerians respect the sacrifices people like abiola made - they, not the spolit middle class kids kicking up a fuss in Unilag are the majority. The noisy minority in Unilag should be ignored. they will son go back to their Ipads

If they don't like the name when they receive their degrees let them rip them up. They don't own the school, the people do -i've not seen any demonstrations in mushin, shomolu, bere or sabongari against it.

If wole is not happy let him write a poem about his fury. He is a great man, but on this occasion he is wrong
President Jonathan is not the absolute owner of the Federal Government so he has no monopoly over every decision made by it. Federal government have 3 arms: Executive, legislative and Judiciary. University of Ife was renamed by the military where laws are decreed and implemented with no negotiation with the general public. Is that what you call democracy? We can as well go back to the military era because I see not a single sign of improvement in the quality if life of Nigerians since we switched back to civilian rule. I can also see that you obviously did not attend University of Lagos hence your indifference to whatever happens to it and also who gave you the impression that it is meant for the rich or elite? For the fact that many people find it difficult to get in does not mean that there are no smart people from poor home studying there.
The point is Mr president have to follow due process. Barrack Obama the most powerful man on earth, have been finding it difficult to pass lots of bills because congress just wont agree with his policies. That is what you call democracy where people discuss overtime to get a collective majority agreement.
If things continue the way they are going, Nigeria will not work on the long run because we are just postponing when a ticking time bomb will explode. Enough with dictatorship from so called civilian presidents

vedaxcool: Parthenogenesis (play /ˌpærθənoʊˈdʒɛnəsɪs/) is a form of asexual reproduction where growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization. In plants, parthenogenesis means development of an embryo from an unfertilized egg cell, and is a component process of apomixis.

Gynogenesis and pseudogamy are closely related phenomena where a sperm or pollen triggers the development of the egg cell into an embryo but makes no genetic contribution to the embryo. The rest of the cytology and genetics of these phenomena are mostly identical to that of parthenogenesis.

The word parthenogenesis comes from the Greek παρθένος, parthenos, meaning "virgin", and γένεσις, genesis, meaning "birth".[1] The term is sometimes used inaccurately to describe reproduction modes in hermaphroditic species that can reproduce by themselves because they contain reproductive organs of both sexes in a single individual's body.

Parthenogenesis occurs naturally in many plants, some invertebrate animal species (including nematodes, water fleas, some scorpions, aphids, some bees, some Phasmida, and parasitic wasps) and a few vertebrates (such as some fish,[2] amphibians, reptiles,[3][4] and very rarely birds[5]). This type of reproduction has been induced artificially in a few species including fish and amphibians.[6]

Normal egg cells form after meiosis and are haploid, with half as many chromosomes as their mother's body cells. Haploid individuals, however, are usually non-viable, and parthenogenetic offspring usually have the diploid chromosome number. Depending on the mechanism involved in restoring the diploid number of chromosomes, parthenogenetic offspring may have anywhere between all and half of the mother's alleles. The offspring having all of the mother's genetic material are called full clones and those having only half are called "half clones". Full clones are usually formed without meiosis. If meiosis occurs, the offspring will get only a fraction of the mother's alleles.

So in theory the virgin birth is not impossible!
Did you do basic Biology in Secondary School? I am really disappointed on your level of intelligence with this post. Please try not to go into technical discussions you know nothing about because there are lots of educated experts here on Nairaland. Funny thing is that your secondary school Biology is enough for you to know that what you posted is nonsense

It seems alot of people who are not Alumni of Unilag or current student of the University are happy or indifferent to the change of name. As an Alumni of Unilag, I will say it means alot to most of us because Unilag is a well established name within and outside Africa. For those going international in their education and career, it could play a part in determining perception by international community of their worth because it will certainly take a very long time for the new name to be recognised in the global community.
Also I think haters should leave current and ex Akokites to discuss their affairs.

ckkris: Black African preachers are now preaching and winning converts in Europe, North America, and around the world. Christianity is not a European religion. Europeans were worshipping the sun, noon, and stars, just like the Egyptians did. Everyone has to be converted, to worship The True God, Creator of the solar system, defined by Moses in Genesis 1:14. That's how Europe started to develop, and organise themselves into nation states. The difference is clear between those who worship The Most High God, and, those who worship the sun, moon, and stars, or the humanists who just worship themselves.
