@ Sefago, Thank you joor. I cant just imagine a university graduate will reason like that. |
MIT the best engineering school in the world offer BSc, Cambridge BSc, Caltech BSc, Imperial College BSc, Stanford BSc even Delft is BSc So what are you talking abt the BSc. B Eng thing? I have worked as an engineer on the field for sometime before studying for masters degree so i dont need to confirm from anyone which of the 2 degrees is more valuable |
@fstranger3, I agree with you that we have electricity problem. That is not an excuse not to incorporate elevator in your building plans because the last time I was in Unilag, they still had efficient working elevators in the Senate building and Faculty of Art. But that is not even the point I'm trying to raise here. Becomerichn said not having more than 1 story building is a factor to show Unilorin is the best university in Nigeria. He is not even talking about the research work and papers published by his professor. Why did U go to univerty in the first place? Is it to go and look at buildings?? |
@ Becomerichn, So because you guys dont have more than 1 story building in ilorin, you believe the school was design for disable students? What is the function of an elevator? |
@ Oko-omoge, The B.ENG and BSC term in Nigeria is just a nomenclature. But you cannot compare the success of Unilorin grauduates with graduates of schools like UI, OAU, UNILAG, UNN, ABU & UNIBEN. Every school have an Alumni in top positions in major Oil and Gas companies, so your post on knowing graduates from the few universities which you personally selected because of the BENG thing doesnt hold ground. I myself have worked with graduates from ESUTECH, ILORIN, UI, OAU, CALABAR, PHC, EKPOMA etc in the oil and gas industry and discovered that its more of the person and not the school we all attach importance to. Your success is determine by how well you develop yourself. An average graduate of engineering whether BSC or B.ENG can be trained to do any job needed by their employer. But the six universities listed above still attract the best brains in Nigeria simply because people believe that the first generation univerties have the best standard in Nigeria. Also, mind you that the Oil and gas industry is one of the lowest employer of labour compared to the size of their operations and investment, so there are other sectors of the economy that employs people. In summary, enough with this school comparison because like I said in an earlier post, the main thing is what value your degree can bring in your career pursuit. |
@ Becomerichn, Why are you stressing the superiority of your school so much? I think its a sign of complex problem as you should not be the one rating your home but allow others do it and for your information, the most important thing is what you can do with your universiity degree after graduation and not the position in ranking. But I'm really suprised that the only reasons you're giving for unilorin being a good is the buildings they have there, the fact that if you make first class you will be absolved by an oil company, a 2-1 in Unilorin is equivalent to a 1st class in other schools, these are just rediculous points to buttress ur claim. And mind you, a first class graduate anywhere, whether from OOU, DELSU, Unilag, OAU etc is smart irrespective of the school he graduates from and will most likely succeed in the labour market. |
@ fstranger3, Its obvious you know nothing about the educational system in Nigeria becos you are very ignorant in comparing community college with Nigerian universities and believing that Unilag programmes other than engineering is crap. You just come to the internet and type nonesense that tells me you are really anti Nigerian because of colonial mentality. I graduated from Unilag and will give a summary of where some of my classmates are now. The best student is getting his PhD from stanford University this summer Second best is with Chevron Nigeria Third best got his PhD from Princeton last year. Fourth best got his Mphil from Cambridge and is getting his PhD from Manchester this summer Fifth best had his masters in University of Texas @ Austin and is with schlumberger in the US Sixth best had his masters in Texas A&M and is with schlumberger in the US I can go on mentioning the success of my classmates which I am very proud of and I myself i'm competing favorably well in TU Delft. Every single one of us got international scholarship. This is just my graduating class so imagine how well the graduates of Unilag will be performing generally. I generally dont do this nonesense comparison thing because the ultimate thing is the success of your career but I couldnt just imagine someone can reason the way you do about Nigerian universities. Can you compare the above achievement of my classmates with a community college? Its really an insult for you to come and type nonesense when you know nothing about something. |
When did size of school become the yard stick in judging the quality of a University? Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, is not as big as unilag, but ranked currently as the 18th best engineering university in the world,15th best in 2009-2010 and 13th best in 2008-2009. The quality of an engineering faculty is determine mostly by the quality of cutting edge research they're into and its affiliation with the industry and not all the noise becomerichn is making. Mind you, Unilorin was openned with professors from the older universities mainly UI, Unilag and OAU. |
Too much theory. There is really no formula |
Why is it only in Nigeria that we hear news like this? This is really dumb for people to believe |
@ AolyElaw, There is no such word as registrated. Take note. |
Sagamite, Sefago and tensor777, please why dont you guys stop this hatred and cursing that wont do anybody good? You guys can always express yourself and make your idea know to people without resorting to insult. Its really bad cos you're all creating a bad impression about yourselves on NL |
Why cant people be civilized and engage in mutual discussion rather than insulting people with different view from theirs? That is really bad and shows you're not used to being in a multicultural environment. Please let us try to be civil here. Give out your view about things and leave it for others to accept or reject. |
@ Rington, If the society think something is wrong, let them make it legal under the constitution guarding the countries sovereignty rather than some individuals using their subjectivity to kill simply because it is against their belief. The killing itself is a crime under the law of every country and a sin in every religion so why the doudle standard or do you think your god will be happy you are commiting murder? Some Islamic community believes non believers are infidels but the Nigerian constitution allows freedom of religion. Will you now justify the killing of a non muslim by an islamic group in an Islamic community simply because that few group is against non believe in Islam? |
To be realistic, There is no reason to compare admission into a UCL and Imperial with a Stanford and MIT because the top notch American schools have far higher admission requirements. The only british school I really regard high in terms of strictness in admission requirement is Cambridge because all the people I knew that went there are first class Nigerian graduate. Also, someone was comparing OAU to Georgetown, I am so sure you have not experience education in the west, that is why you are kind of dogmatic in your view about the quality of education you dont know about. I am a product of Unilag, and will tell you that education in Nigeria have lost its standard. I have friends with a 3.6 GPA that got masters admission into Imperial and UCL. But one of my classmate with a CGPA of 4.62, GRE-1490 with recommendation from a stanford graduate professor couldnt get into Stanford, MIT and Caltech but got full scholarship to Cambridge and Imperial. If you actually want to know how strict this schools are, apply to 5 top american schools and five top british schools yourself and see how the admission decision will turn out. |
I am really ashamed to be an African if we all still reason like this in the 21st century. What has happened to human right? Why cant we be tolerable to believes different from our culture and religion? If your religion says being gay is evil, why dont you just mind your bussiness by living your life according to your religion and allow others to do same? I think people reason so low in Africa, that I imagine how we can move forward as a continent. Instead of bothering ourselves on how to develop the continent, we are holding up to stupid believes and killing ourselves unnecessarily. For all those praising the killing of gay, you should not complain when some crazy white racist lynch on people to death simply because they are black, cos it doesnt make any difference from what you're all saying. For the fact that your religion preach against gay, doesnt mean all religion are against it and your religion is just one of the school of thought as to how to get close to a god, so learn to mind your business because from all indications, I can see that there is basically no difference between the muslims and the christians when it comes to religious violence and intolerance forgetting that if you are born in places like Japan, Nepal, India, China, Russia, etc you will probably not believe in any of those two religion (Islam & Xtian) but Nigerians will be fast to label you evil. |
Illiteracy is really the problem |
@ Lagosboy, Why will the clash be labelled tribal alone when mosques were burnt? Is that not a red flag to show its also religious? |
Religion and tribe are interlinked in Nigeria and cannot be seperated. The North is predominantly muslim, the East is predominantly christian and the West and Middle Belt is a mix. So if an Igbo man is killed by an Hausa man and vice versa, it could easily lead to a religious crises. |
Another product of religious intolerance in Nigeria. I have always believed that religion have brought more bad than good to man from the very beginning of his existence. History on religious destruction and persecution is there for us to read and start thinking of how to change our reasoning. I dont know why 2 adults will transfer their anger into religious haterd and they all claim to worship god. |
All of you that think the west is so bad, why dont you all return to Nigeria since it is the best place to be. |
Ecomic problem is not an excuse for misbehaviour because it means we have to solve the economic problem before pulling down other countries. You dont have power, good road, transport system, good education, good water system, security etc and you all think life is good for you. @ Buzugee, For your information I am an engineer in the oil and gas industry and know what I earn before coming here for my masters so I am way above that average Nigerian class you are talking about. But why do you need to have the best jobs to be able to get the basic amenities needed to live a good life? That is the mentality most Nigerians have. The national wealth belong to everybody so the government should distribute it round in terms of basic facilities, rather than stealing the money and stacking it in some foreign account. |
We have had thesame people rulling us in Nigeria since the 1950's and their children are taking over from them. Have you solve that problem in your country before you start castigating a similar practice in another country. I have been hearing the name Riliwan Lukman, Adamu Ciroma, Obasanjo, Buhari, etc since I was a baby and they are still the once contesting for political positions. Dont you think its wrong to leave a problem in your house and condem thesame problem in another mans house? |
I am not an anti Nigerian, but I think we have to face some reality before we can move forward as a country. Both Nigeria and the West have their pros and cons but I think we have to identify these differences and accept that the cons are worse in Nigeria than in the west before we can solve our problem. But everybody is just being defensive of a system that doesnt allow equal opportunity to everybody and success have alot to do with where you are from and who you know. |
Do you think yale etc will put those children there if they dont have a high level of academic standard? |
Atleast when the police comes around, the hooligans are arrested. But in Nigeria, I think the police is even worst because they are useless and use their guns to extort money and intimidate even tax payers. I was once beaten by a police man, who saw me wearing my bank ID card and went ahead to molest me. All his colleagues and superiors on same shift with him apologised to me that he's drunk and that I shouldnt go back to him for a justification of his action because he can do me further harm and they wont help me if he starts it all over. I was just wondering why I was paying heavy tax to the government if thesame police man that my tax is used to service will beat me up for no reason |
Have you tried to compare the children of the rich in Nigeria with the children of the rich in Europe/America? You all look at the good side of Nigeria and compare them with the bad side of the west which is wrong. The children of the rich in America are mainly the one's in Yale, Havard, Princeton, Darthmouth, Brown, Duke, Columbia etc. But you dont ever think of that area when making comparison The tout in Nigeria are suppose to be the version of the holigans that are in Europe/America but we are very fast to dispute the fact that they are in thesame class in their respective society. From what I can see you are encourage a class system of life which we have in Nigeria as a big problem because people are respected because of their wealth without asking them how they got it. Is that the mentality you want to give your children? Here, every body is thesame, have thesame opportunity and can get to their highest potential if they want to and respect every human being around them simply because they are human. |
Well, I'm in the Netherlands, but even at that, you complain about the British children getting pregnant, drunk, hooligan etc. Have you consider the number of Agberos (area boys) in all the 36 states and FCT of Nigeria? If you really want to be realistic, you will still agree with me that the British hooligan are far better cultured and reason better than the average touts we have in Nigeria that can hold a public bus to ransome without anybody being able to do anything. Or is the Nigerian police you want to talk about? Also do you know how many teenage pregnancies are terminated daily in Nigeria because there is no strict regulation of the medical professions? I think people have so much hopes and expectation about western countries and tend to complain unnecessarily about things they will see in Nigeria and take to be norm. Before you abuse another mans country, try to correct that same problem in your country. I still like Nigeria because that is where I can make good money in my career compared to europe, but I will give my children a better exposure from the scratch and let them do what they want to do when they are adult. |
From my experience as a postgraduate student in europe, I made up my mind that my children will not spend so much of their life in Nigeria, because a 20yrs old child brought up in europe is so exposed in knowledge to be able to compete favorably in this challenging world, than an average 30years old person in Nigeria. People only look at the negative part of things forgetting that the negativity which affect the ways of reasoning of an average Nigerian child, is worst than all the negative part they see in the western countries. Basic to University education in the west is something you cannot dream of when you are in Nigeria and that is the most important thing a child need to be able to face the real world |
@ JayFK, If you grew up in the midst of your family in Nigeria, then you cant hide you non belief from them because they expect you to go to church regularly or atleast on sundays, pray and fast with the church and family, do morning devotions with the family, attend the church on the last day of the year etc. Infact I had problem with one of my bank managers because i just refused to cooperate and pray with them every morning before start of business as I dont believe in the efficacy of prayer so why do i as an adult deceive myself? You just cant hide your unbelief if you reside in Nigeria except you want to pretend and that I think is even worse because you are more or less a hypocrite. I stopped going to church in 1996 when I was in secondary school, without the mentor of anyone but just pure objective reasoning. My family all know my stand, they have fought with me to try and reconvert me earlier, but have now left me alone to live my life the way that suits me. |
Do you expect people to read all the trash you wrote up there? I assume you are a Christian so I'll tell you to go resolve all d contradiction issues in the bible before you start any religious criticism here. |
@ Uyi Iredia, My late father in my presence wrote a cheque of about 70,000 naira for one of the Convenant University projects and handed it over to the church and the irony of things is that he was never able to afford to send any of his children there because he couldnt afford to pay the fees and I kept on wondering why do you give this so called man of god money to build a school he'll claim ownership to when you cannot afford to send your child there? I know most Nigerians have been deluded not too think outside the box under which they were raised which is the reason for their acceptance of anything a man of god says |
