A review of the financial accounts of Arsenal by the Arsenal Supporters Trust has revealed that Thierry Henry received around £10 million pounds in wages and fees in his final season with the club.

The Trust arrived at the figure after identifying a signing on fee paid at the start of the 2006-2007 season estimated to have been as high as £5 million.

Scrutiny of the amortisation and player registrations costs in the club's six-monthly accounts up to last November identified a substantial one-off payment being paid in 2006.

Adding that sum to Henry's wages would make him the highest paid player ever in English football across a single season.

Wes Brown's protracted contract negotiations with Manchester United finally ended with the player signing a four-year deal worth in the region of £10 million.

Brown had looked likely to leave the club he joined as a child 14-years ago after lobbying for improved terms that United were reluctant to meet.

United turned down a substantial offer from Newcastle in January but with Brown's current deal ending in the summer he had the option to leave the club he has supported all his life for free and in the process earn himself a huge pay rise.

Rice prices hit the $1,000-a-tonne level for the first time on Thursday as panicking importers scrambled to secure supplies, exacerbating the tightness already provoked by export restrictions in Vietnam, India, Egypt, China and Cambodia.

The jump came as the Philippines, the largest rice importer, failed for the fourth time to secure as much rice as it wanted.

The unsuccessful tender followed Bangladesh’s inability to buy any rice at all this week.

Traders and analysts warned that rice demand was escalating in spite of prices rising to three times the level of a year ago as countries try to build up stocks.

Rising rice prices have triggered riots in the past month in countries such as Haiti, Bangladesh and Ivory Coast. Rice is considered the most political agricultural commodity as it is a staple for about 3bn people in poor countries in Asia and Africa.
