The information is from Thisislondon,a free paper you get on the Tube.

So Gaynners are hoping for big name signings? grin I thought you guys had an outstanding youth policy and all your players will simply graduate into world-class players.

I don't think even Cavenaghi will want to join Arsenal.Arsenal will have to settle for someone like Peter Crouch unless they can find a greedy footballer who doesn't mind where he plays as long as he is put on a fat salary.

Its all down to money.Just as Luca Toni spurned better clubs to end up in the Bundesliga,so also might Amauri go to Arsenal instead of Juventus-a far more prestigious club.

If its merely a footballing decision, when Juventus wants you,you join instantly without wasting time.

I checked and found that its the top 4 Leagues(Spain,England,Italy and Germany) that have their goals multiplied by a factor of 2,not the top 8,unlike Dayo's Wikipedia source says.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Golden_Boot
Mr Wikipedia, this is why I take things on Wikipedia with a pinch of salt. The article says this:
Goals scored in the top eight leagues according to the UEFA coefficients list are multiplied by a factor of two, and goals scored in the leagues ranked nine to 21 are multiplied by 1.5.
Fair enough, until you remember that Afonso Alves scored 34 goals in the Eredivise in 06/07 and who won the Goden Boot?Francesco Totti with 26 goals in Serie A.Are they saying that 26 x 2 is more than 34 x 2?

Food for thought: Santa Cruz has never scored more than 5 goals a season but when he got to EPL where defenders are scared to tackle he is on 15 already
As for Santa Cruz, are you now telling me that Diego Forlan's exploits in La Liga prove that La Liga is less tough compared to the EPL?What about Freddy Kanoute.Compare their goals ratio when they were in the EPL to when they joined La Liga

A review of the financial accounts of Arsenal by the Arsenal Supporters Trust has revealed that Thierry Henry received around £10 million pounds in wages and fees in his final season with the club.

The Trust arrived at the figure after identifying a signing on fee paid at the start of the 2006-2007 season estimated to have been as high as £5 million.

Scrutiny of the amortisation and player registrations costs in the club's six-monthly accounts up to last November identified a substantial one-off payment being paid in 2006.

Adding that sum to Henry's wages would make him the highest paid player ever in English football across a single season.

Wes Brown's protracted contract negotiations with Manchester United finally ended with the player signing a four-year deal worth in the region of £10 million.

Brown had looked likely to leave the club he joined as a child 14-years ago after lobbying for improved terms that United were reluctant to meet.

United turned down a substantial offer from Newcastle in January but with Brown's current deal ending in the summer he had the option to leave the club he has supported all his life for free and in the process earn himself a huge pay rise.

Earlier in the season Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed Brown personally as a 14-year-old, spoke of his frustration at Brown's unwillingness to sign the original deal that was on the table, claiming he had been given bad advice by his agent Paul Martin.

Ferguson accused Brown of "living in his agent's pocket" and said of the impasse that it "depresses me at times."

However, compromises have been made on both sides to allow a new deal to be struck with Brown believed to be granted an improved £50,000-a-week salary on a contract that will run until he is nearly 33.

A hamstring injury is likely to rule Owen Hargreaves out of Manchester United's Champions League semi-final first leg against Barcelona next week.

The England midfielder complained of a tight muscle after United's 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday and the immediate prognosis is that Hargreaves will need up to ten days to fully recover, meaning he is unlikely to feature in the Nou Camp unless he defies medical predictions.

Lucatoni in 2003/2004 scored 30 goals for Palermo, In 2004/2005 scored 20 goals for Palermo, In 2005/2006 scored 31 goals for Fiorentina, 2006/2007 scored 15 goals and his season was blighted by a metartarsal injury. Then you can tell me that he had it easy in Serie A. which italian scored more than Luca at the last world cup?

Tell me which Italian striker in recent time that has a higher scoring record than Luca toni?
You dey count the 30 goals he scored in Serie B in 03/04? grin That means that Toni had enjoyed only 2 prolific seasons at the top level before moving to Bayern as a mercenary at the age of 30.

Of course,Italy, like England, hasn't been producing top class strikers anymore. That is why they have to make do with Toni.Gone are the days of the Vieris and Inzaghis.

Meanwhile if the Bundesliga is that easy to score how come Bundesliga strikers don't win golden ball? You think this is the EPL where players are not tackled? How come Berbatov became a hero instantly in the EPL,
How come Roque Santa Cruz that never had more than 5 league goals in any of the 8 seasons with Bayern now has 15 in his first season in the EPL?
Its harder for a Bundesliga based striker to win the Golden Boot presently ,just like an Eredivise or Ligue 1 striker, because their goals are now given a lower weighting when totting up the figures compared to Serie A,La Liga and the EPL. You see, even the statisticians think the Bundesliga is now crap. grin

As for Santa Cruz and Berbatov, firstly,Berbatov is running neck and neck with Robbie Keane so perhaps Keane is also world-class?Is it the same Berbatov that only managed 12 goals in the EPL last season?

Simply comparing figures like that across leagues doesn't make sense.Toni scored more goals in the Serie A 05/06 season than he ever managed in Serie B or Serie C in any season, would that mean that the latter 2 leagues are comparable to Serie A in quality?

@4play,
Can you show me the link you got the story about these players wages from?
Read it and weep.
Ask they did, precisely 40 million times. That's how much his four-year deal is worth in Euros. At the current exchange rate, that works out at £153,000 per week. For a 30 year-old. Only Kaka is getting paid more in Europe. It's absurd money, of course.

@tkb

I was kidding about the Saha stuff.I heard Brown is willing to sign a new contract.Maybe after receiving interests from only the likes of Birmingham,Wigan and West Ham,he wisened up.

@Dayo

Rio is on £115,000 per week and its well deserved.Toni's contract is denominated in Euros so the Pounds sterling equivalent fluctuates with the currency rate.As at this week,he was on £153,000 per week!Only Kaka earns more.

Why won't he be scoring so much when he is playing for a Bayern side in an uncompetitive 3rd Grade league.Apart from the 2005/2006 season, when else has he approached this goals ratio while playing at the top level? Why didn't he do the same at the World Cup?15 goals in 33 games for Italy and they put him on £150,000.

Apart from Kaka, nobody else is paid that much.Is he the 2nd best player in the world. The reality is that Bayern were in the position of a club in say oil-rich Dubai. The only way they could get Toni to come to the Bundesliga instead of joining a top Serie A or La Liga club was to offer him an outrageous wage.Otherwise,Toni won't want to come to such a 3rd grade league for merely footballing reasons . tongue Its all about the money.

PS:Heard Toni said his secret is,"I touch the ball,it goes in". grin

If Bear Sterns was bailed out, why can't homeowners be helped as well? Do you mean that million of homes that are about to be foreclosed do not have wider implications like CDOs and credit default swaps held by Wall Street?
I don't think they do.Exposure to $10trillion worth of assets isn't the same as defaulting sub-prime mortgages which barely top $300bn.

We should stop looking at Wall Street as the "other",some oasis isolated from the rest of us.If Wall Street suffers, everybody in America will, from your equity trader to your Mexican immigrant on minimum wage. The class rhetoric doesn't help matters.

Besides, bailing out such homeowners is in some way bailing out many of their Wall Street lenders. The US is suffering partly because of Americans binging on credit instead of saving. Its not the duty of the Govt to come to the aid of people 'drunk on credit' unless not doing so-as in the collapse of a bank-will have a calamitous effect on the economy.

PoliticsRe: Fear Of Social Unrest Due To Rising Cost Of Rice by 4Play(op): 12:23am On Apr 18, 2008
Rice prices hit the $1,000-a-tonne level for the first time on Thursday as panicking importers scrambled to secure supplies, exacerbating the tightness already provoked by export restrictions in Vietnam, India, Egypt, China and Cambodia.

The jump came as the Philippines, the largest rice importer, failed for the fourth time to secure as much rice as it wanted.

The unsuccessful tender followed Bangladesh’s inability to buy any rice at all this week.

Traders and analysts warned that rice demand was escalating in spite of prices rising to three times the level of a year ago as countries try to build up stocks.

Rising rice prices have triggered riots in the past month in countries such as Haiti, Bangladesh and Ivory Coast. Rice is considered the most political agricultural commodity as it is a staple for about 3bn people in poor countries in Asia and Africa.

Foreign AffairsRe: Haiti’s Poor Rely On Mud Pies To Survive by 4Play(m): 12:15am On Apr 18, 2008
Hunger bashed in the front gate of Haiti's presidential palace. Hunger poured onto the streets, burning tires and taking on soldiers and police. Hunger sent the country's prime minister packing.

Haiti's hunger, that burn in the belly that so many here feel, has become fiercer than ever in recent days as global food prices spiral out of reach, spiking as much as 45 percent since the end of 2006 and turning Haitian staples such as beans, corn and rice into closely guarded treasures.

Saint Louis Meriska's children ate two spoonfuls of rice apiece as their only meal two days ago and then went without any food the following day. His eyes downcast, his own stomach empty, the unemployed father said forlornly, "They look at me and say, 'Papa, I'm hungry,' and I have to look away. It's humiliating and it makes you angry."

That anger is palpable across the globe. The food crisis not only is being felt among the poor, but also is eroding the gains of the working and middle classes, sowing volatile levels of discontent and putting new pressures on fragile governments.

In Cairo, the military is being put to work baking bread as rising food prices threaten to become the spark that ignites wider anger at a repressive government. In Burkina Faso and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, food riots are breaking out like never before. And in reasonably prosperous Malaysia, the ruling coalition was nearly ousted by disgruntled voters who cited food and fuel hikes as their primary concerns.

But experts say there are few quick fixes to a crisis tied to so many factors, such as strong demand for food from emerging economies like China's; rising oil prices; and the diversion of food resources to make biofuels.

You can't have a world-class hospital in a cesspit of a nation.

Lets say it costs $100m to build one.Remember you have costly maintenance to undertake to retain standards and you also have to hire top notch medical and other personnel to run it.

As a Gov,you also have other issues that are no less important demanding resources. What about providing world class water facilities, what about education, hospitals and clinics throughout the state,e.t.c? At the end,you are left with no choice but to split your meager resources in order to meet the various needs.

Its better to spend $100m across board-building small clinics, schools and water facilities-than to dole out a whopping amount to build a hospital of the same standard as he visits in Europe.Actually, its your kind of thinking that is behind the phenomenon of 'white elephant' projects which dot the landscape of Nigeria.
