PoliticsRe: Should Bush Be Prosecuted For War Crime? by 4Play(m): 8:42pm On Mar 29, 2008
The issue of the conduct of the war is moot in this regard.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Many thought the war will be best served by 'light' US military presence, others projected troop numbers that were quite simply unsustainable given the state of the post-Clinton military.

In Germany post-war,some 2.3m died(I have seen figures of 5m).Posterity now casts the German occupation in a favorable light.I suspect it will take decades for a valid judgment to be made as to whether the war effort was successful or not.

However you look at it,that barbers charge 50cents a haircut is a symptom of our economic problems. On the one hand,Nigerians can't afford to pay more,on the other, the barbers can't afford to charge more.

Most barbers in Nigeria can't afford things people in the developed world take for granted. There is a huge difference in living standards between Nigerian based barber and a foreign based barber.

As for food being mainly organic, not only are food safety standards in Nigeria far more lax, there is little evidence that organic food is safer in any case.

About the tailor issue, you are scraping the barrel here. grin

That a barber earns 50N(less than 50 US Cents) per haircut is a good thing? In effect, that people earn peanuts for services they provide is seen as part of the indicia of positives that exists in Nigeria.

Foreign AffairsRe: Cubans Open Up To The World : By Being Allowed To Own Mobile Phones by 4Play(m): 3:31pm On Mar 29, 2008
@Lucabrasi

What it is the Cuban communist system and how does it differ from the communist systems as historically practiced in different places of the world? Communism was a resounding failure, without exception,in every country in which it was practiced.

Like Cuba, the Communist Soviet Union and Eastern bloc had socialised healthcare and education but they all suffered from a common malaise-totalitarianism infused with economic misery.Has it occurred to you that Cuba's key problem lies, not with the US embargo, but with its adoption of a system that has never worked in human history?

Your argument is that something, communism, which has never worked anywhere would have worked in Cuba if not for America.

Again, you keep alluding to foreigners who live an alternative existence to what the Cuban people go through.First it was your ex,now your elder sister. This thread started with an article which noted that foreigners were allowed cellphones to the exclusion of ordinary Cubans;they are also allowed toasters, airconditioners,DVD players, microwaves and computers.

Your claim that your ex's programme is a one off for Nigerian students is complete guff.Thousands of Nigerians have undergone and will continue to use this programme. It exists for African,Caribbean and Latin American students. The goal is the same-to continue to launder the image of the Cuban regime.

Did your elder sister tell you that Cubans can't simply walk into hotels that foreigners use or that foreigners even use a different currency to Cubans? Did they tell you about having to obtain food through Govt rations? Where else can there be such a segregation between foreigners and locals?

There was so much drivel you wrote but I have little time to refute it.You pointed to the abscence of anti-Govt riots and demonstrations as proof of Cuban contentment with their lot,has it occured to you that in a country that locks up people for merely criticising the Govt-a country with no freedom of speech-nobody dare riot or demonstrate against the Govt? Does the abscence of riots in N.Korea mean they are happy with their lot?

To finish up,if you don't like capitalism, what do you like apart from Cuba where people depend on Govt food rations, have little or no freedom(not even to buy a toaster)or say in who rules them? If the Cuban Govt was popular with its people, why hasn't it put its popularity to a vote since 1959 by holding elections? Why would a popular Govt not hold elections?
PoliticsRe: Should Bush Be Prosecuted For War Crime? by 4Play(m): 2:20pm On Mar 29, 2008
This crass talk about prosecuting Bush for war crimes beggars belief. No where have the Iraqi people indicated that they would rather Saddam was not removed from power.Polls after polls show that Iraqis, despite all they have gone through, are glad that Saddam was removed.

The meme,"Bush lied, people died",like all memes is incompatible with reality and logic. The supposed lie, that there were WMDs in Iraq, was something repeated by even Jacques Chirac himself in April 2003.Indeed,this claim was embodied in UNSC 1441 passed unanimously by 15 countries-that will mean that all 15 countries were lying.

A lie presupposes that the liar knew the truth-in this case, that there were no WMDs-but insisted on claiming otherwise.A lie does not include honest mistakes otherwise the whole of humanity is one mass blob of dishonesty. For Bush to believe that Iraq had no WMDs when his CIA chief told him it was a "slam dunk" would have been stunning.

Even Saddam's military generals were certain Iraq had WMDs:Read this excerpt from the NY Times-
¶The Iraqi dictator was so secretive and kept information so compartmentalized that his top military leaders were stunned when he told them three months before the war that he had no weapons of mass destruction, and they were demoralized because they had counted on hidden stocks of poison gas or germ weapons for the nation's defense.
Source:NY Times

Saddam probably kept up the facade that he had WMDs in order to deter his enemies including Iran,Israel and various rebellious elements within the country. His was a policy of deliberate ambiguity.Fortunately,it backfired on him

The case for a Bush war crimes trial has little basis or support in law or in political reality.Maybe we should start another thread-should Bush be tried for ruining my egusi soup?

You know what is even more childish? The logic you just used.

With this reasoning,no country has a uniquely pressing problem.Name anything-corruption,armed robbery,HIV/AIDS,e.t.c-it happens everywhere so lets not bother ourselves.

Does Nigeria have Govt corruption?Yes.Does America have Govt corruption.Yes.Conclusion:why bother?

Does Nigeria have poverty?Yes.Does America have poverty?Yes.Conclusion:why bother?

We can go on and on and using Outlaws' logic,no country, has a uniquely pressing problem as long as we can establish that such problem also arises in America.

WTF are you doing in England? huh Capitalism breeds corruption. . . .blah blah blah.

I have good news for you! cool There are a lot of countries that don't practice capitalism as in the West.Resign from your job, take all your money and start making travel arrangements for the likes of North Korea,Burma or Cuba.

This hypocrisy irritates me. angry They tell us capitalism is no good yet want to live in capitalist bastions like the UK and the US.What else are they waiting for? huh

These people have no sense of history.Half of Europe used to be non-capitalist.Lucabrasi lives in England, why can't he simply ask those Eastern European migrants to regale him with "wonderful" stories about how beautiful life was under a communist system? huh

As for the familiar drivel about praise singing by beneficiaries of Castro's foreign scholarship programme. This reminds me of all those African and other foreign knuckleheads who went to Russia at the time of the Soviet Union to study.I have 2 close family friends who studied medicine then in Moscow.

They all came back telling us how wonderful communist Russia was. Most still maintain the same line. The people of Russia had other ideas while foreign students were praising their nation to the high heavens. What else is a propaganda exercise for if not to take gullible and impressionable foreigners on an image laundering exercise?

How about this for absurdity-I benefited from a Castro propaganda exercise so that imbues me with objectivity in analysing Cuba.

At the end of the day,the foreigners who lived a sheltered and censored existence return home leaving the Cuban people to plot and scheme how they can "swim" to America on a raft.
SportsRe: Eleven(11) Best Young Playes In The World. by 4Play(m): 6:50am On Mar 29, 2008
The main players I can think of are:

Alexandre PatoAC Milan-Fantastic young talent, scored a real poacher's goal against Sweden in mid-week.Seems to play without fear.

Bojan Kirkic
(Barca)-Another great striking talent. He is able to play on the flanks in Barca's 4-3-3 formation but can also play as an out and out striker.

Ben Arfa(O.Lyon)-This guy is one of the best dribblers in the game. The ability to run at defenders with the ball seems to be a dying art but Ben Arfa displays this aspect greatly.Sometimes he overdoes it though.

Ibrahim Affellay(PSV)-Another excellent Dutch prospect.Could play on the flanks or in central midfield. Was linked with Arsenal but thankfully didn't join them.

Banega(Valencia)-Excelled at the World Clubs Championship for Boca.Probably joined the wrong club in Valencia.Argentina seems to be blessed in the defensive midfield area with Banega,Cambiasso,Gago,Mascherano,e.t.c.Great passer of the ball and excellent ball winner.

Ezequiel Garay(Santander)Rumored to be moving to Barca next season.Yet another great Agrentine prospect. One of the best young centre-halfs in the game.

Diego Capel (Seville)- Nice to see an old fashioned left footed winger emerge.Full of energy and pace with skills to match. One of Spain's best young talents.

Toni Kroos(Bayern)-I have nothing good to say about a German. grin

Carlos Vela(Arsenal)-19 year old prospect.Has already made his senior debut for Mexico.Currently on loan with Osasuna. Can play either in midfield or as a striker.

Breno(Bayern)-Great young talent.Obviously not 18 years old as he claimed but can't be more than 22.Was supposed to join Real but pulled out due to dispute surrounding his real age.Brazil doesn't always produce great central defenders but he seems to be a rare gem.

Anderson(Man Utd)-What can I say about him, most talented of the whole lot!

Who the hell is comparing Man Utd's situation in 1986 with Chelsea's circumstance in 2004? When Fergie came to Utd,we were embroiled in a relegation battle.Jose came to a club that was almost always finishing in the top 4 over the past few years-they had finished 2nd the previous year.

More importantly,we had no Roman Abramovich. The 2 circumstances are entirely different. It irritates hearing muppetts like Wenger,Benitez and previously,Houlier, keep yapping about how it took Fergie 7 years to win the league.

If those tits knew their history, they will know Fergie's situation was entirely different.Utd hadn't won the league in 2 decades,in between that time, they had been relegated.Of course,Fergie spent some money over the coming years as he stabilised the club but Utd were hardly the biggest spenders a la Chelsea of 2004.

PoliticsRe: Hilary Clinton Lied On Tape by 4Play(m): 2:55am On Mar 27, 2008
Obama's actions were probably pre-meditated as a means of ingratiating himself with the Chicago black community in order for his political career to take off.Obama noted in his book that he deliberately sought out who he associates himself with.Coming as an Ivy League mixed race man from Hawaii,he used this church, its pastor and its networking potentials,to launch his career. However, that is a debate for another day.

Rev Wright didn't start his race baiting recently.Rev Wright has been race baiting since the 1960s.Anybody joining that particular church would have known this and was tacitly accepting the ethos of this particular organisation.

There are a lot of black churches that don't preach the same message as Rev Wright's.Lets not give the impression that he had no other choice.

As for Bill comments, all he said was that Jesse Jackson won the same places that Obama won.How is that racist and how does that affect Hillary's ability to be President? How does that Ferraro's comments affect Hillary's suitability as a candidate? The irony is that it was the Obama campaign that brought attention to Ferraro's comments.

So Ferraro saying that Obama won't be this successful if he wasn't a black male somewhat reflects badly on Hillary while Obama joining and staying in a church reputed for racial polarisation, associating himself with a Pastor-who he appointed as a member of his campaign organisation-should be dismissed as not telling us anything about Obama's abilities and motive.

How could you be dismissive about lying about a piece of legislation? It was one of the things he listed as showing his suitability to be President.

Remember the furore over trade. While Obama was going to places like Ohio and ranting against NAFTA,his main economic adviser was reassuring the Canadians that it was all political posturing.

The idea that such a fabulously wealthy club as Arsenal can console themselves on the grounds that-last season they weren't contenders, this season they are-is one of the most ridiculous excuses I have heard in football.

How could a club that only 4 years ago went an entire league season unbeaten be even remotely satisfied about the prospect of finishing trophyless for the 3rd season running on the grounds that they are better off than last season.

Even the claim that Arsenal are better off than last season is somewhat debatable. There are 4 trophies on offer each season. In 2 of the 4-FA Cup and Carling Cup-Arsenal didn't improve on last season.Debo claimed they are 20 points better off in the league, that isn't true.Arsenal finished on 68 points last season, they are currently on 67-lets see how the season pans out.

If your message is that of unifying the nation and you join a Church that is renowned for race baiting, become close associates with a Pastor that glorifies Louis Farrakhan and who has been known since the 60s to be preaching racially polarising teachings a la Malcom X,this can't be dismissed out of hand.

What does it say that even Oprah felt the need to leave that church or that Obama didn't see anything wrong in exposing his children to such guff?

Again, imagine if Hillary joined a church famed for anti-black mud slinging. She won't even have bothered running.

As for Bill and Ferraro's comments, how could they be categorised as attempts to cast Obama as merely a racial champion?Their comments were in reference to the attitude of the electorate to a black candidate not how Obama has been portraying himself.

So Clinton claiming she risked sniper fire amounts to attempts to make her "look more capable",what then do you call Obama claiming credit for passing a legislation that was never passed? Doesn't calling yourself a professor amount to making yourself look more capable?

We have thoroughly dealt with the Wright issue in other threads but to reiterate what I posted there.Obama's campaign is predicated on his ability to transcend racial politics and unite the nation. His close association with such a divisive race baiter as Wright undermines this fundamental claim.

What do you think will happen if Clinton had such a similarly close relationship with a white race baiter?Look at how they tried to eviscerate the Clintons because of comparatively innocuous comments by Ferraro or the furore over Bill's comparison of Obama to Jesse Jackson.

Sure,Clinton hasn't been fully forthcoming with the truth but same applies to Obama.Law professor who isn't a law professor. How can someone in academia not know the difference between a professor and a lecturer? Nuclear legislation that never passed. The list is endless.

Kobojunkie:
Obama released his tax report though cause now it is in the news that with all his talk about helping the poor, he has only given about 1% of his income in the past 6 years to charity and he did give 27,000 to his Pastor whom he claims he does not agree with.
To be fair,Obama's charitable giving has averaged 3.6% over the past 6 years. He stepped up his charitable giving from its average of less than 1% to a whopping 6% when his campaign got under way in 2005/2006.

However, that still puts him lower than the average conservative-the average conservative gives 30% more than the average liberal. grin

Christopher Hitchens once noted of Obama, that it is said that many politicians will sell their grandmother for their own self-interest but never has such a transaction been executed so shamelessly in the full glare of the public.
PoliticsRe: Hilary Clinton Lied On Tape by 4Play(m): 12:55am On Mar 27, 2008

There is no context in which Wright's rants can be understood as less egregious than Clinton's faux pas.

As for the term lecturer being used as synonym for professor,I think you are engaging in a little bit of Clintonesque "truth bending" yourself.

Obama once had a rally at Selma,Alabama. He claimed there that his parents met at a famous civil rights march there.Problem is,Obama was born in 1961,4 years before the famous Selma march. What about the nuclear legislation he said he authored, which he didn't?

My point is,each politician has engaged in this sort ahistorical recollections. There are more important issues to be discussed than how accurate a candidate's memory is about some past event.
PoliticsRe: Hilary Clinton Lied On Tape by 4Play(m): 12:34am On Mar 27, 2008

Sure,Hillary hasn't always religiously stuck with the facts, but neither has Obama,or should I call him Prof Obama(He once claimed to be law professor with the Uni. of Chicago).

If you want to nit pick each candidate's recollection of events in the past, you will always find discrepancies. This shouldn't distract people from the more substantive issues.
