Typical Obamaniac meltdown. grin Big B1 has reached the limits of his Obama defence. The whole Obama defence on NL can be broken down to: I love Obama because he has black skin.Everything else is pretense.
PoliticsRe: What Do You Think About Obama's Latest Speech On His Pastor's Comments? by 4Play(m): 4:05pm On Mar 22, 2008
Big B1:
The speech is brilliant and a pure sample of utmost originality
Lets see how you proceed to expose this "brilliance" and "utmost originality".

Big B1:
Obama clearly and cleverly denounced the statements of his pastor without martyrizing the man (the way most whites would have preferred). He did this in a systematical manner that left many speechless and wondering at the same time.
People were "wondering speechlessly"? grin How did you know that they were "wondering" if they were speechless? grin

Seriously, drawing a distinction between a set of comments and the person who made the comments is hardly original. We do that everyday even on NL when we insist that people should address issues and not personalities.

So what is special about this everyday distinction? You said he did it in a "systematical manner".Really?what would a "non-systematical manner" have been?

Interestingly, you noted that Obama conducted his denunciation in a manner that wasn't the way most whites would have preferred.I would also add,Latinos and Asians(who seem to be even more implacably opposed to a Black candidate than Whites). If he has managed to conduct his denunciation in a manner not to the preference of most whites, latinos and Asians(the bulk of the electorate),what then has he achieved?

He also re-introduced the power of racism in America by rationally simplifying the negative effects and pointing out the products that have compiled by these unbearable backwash over the years. He made his points and gave several examples without choosing sides (not many people could accomplish this goal successfully).
I beg to differ, many people have chronicled racism in America without choosing sides, this is hardly remarkable. So he went through a history lesson in his speech,to what avail? How does that address the salient issue-why is a candidate whose entire campaign is predicated on his ability to unite the nation so closely associated with such a polarizing figure as Rev Wright? Even Oprah Winfrey saw the wisdom in leaving the church.

He further mentioned that people shouldn't berate Pastor Wright without critically analyzing and clearly understanding the root of his disapprobation.
There is a difference between anger and hate. What were the "roots of his disapprobation"? Did Rev Wright have a different experience to Martin Luther King, who never engaged in such polarization. Is his personal experience as an African-American any worse than the millions of African-Americans of his generation who don't engage in such kooky talk as blaming whites for the spread of HIV?

He also stated that America will move forward effectively and efficiently only if folks could accept one another and work together as one.
Is this another example of "brilliance and originality"?

Sen Barack H. Obama Jr. methodically touched all the sensitive demons that are clearly frightenable to many (politicians) in America today. He did this with zero hesitation, without stepping on any toes, without choosing sides, with pure sincerity, with supreme genuineness and with a crystal clear frame of mind.
Many found him insincere on many grounds:Here was a man who condemned the likes of comedian,Don Imus for his "ho" comment telling Americans to have some understanding for a polarizing preacher that rants,"God Damn America"

Here was a man who claimed earlier in interviews that he didn't hear any of Rev Wright's comments, now belatedly admitting that indeed,he heard "comments that could be considered controversial".Politi-speak and sophistry simultaenously.

Here was a man drawing warped moral equivalence between Rev Wright and an honorable woman like Ferraro or even his more honorable grand-mum.In the case of his grand-mum,there is a clear difference between privately held prejudices(frankly, most people hold these, even Jesse Jackson noted his own fright if accustomed by a young black male in the middle of the night) and standing in a public arena and spewing incendiary and inciting remarks. What does it say that Obama exposes his kids to this bile?

Having said that,he failed to address the core issue:Why is a man claiming to transcend race and seeking to unite his country closely associate with such a polarizer? On this count,he failed miserably. No amount of sophistry or attempts to flatter people's intellectual pretensions could hide this.

As for Totti being a striker or not, he plays in the Trecarichi position - just behind the main striker. So do Del Piero and Roberto Baggio - and they scored a lot of goals.
The more you post, the more you contradict yourself. You just said Baggio and Del Piero "scored a lot of goals" and yet,you were knocking Totti's goal scoring ability. Totti has a goals ratio of 0.41 for Roma in Serie A,unremarkable until you find that Del Piero's ratio for Juve is also 0.41,Baggio's club ratio is 0.45(the differrence is minimal).

So how come Baggio and Del Piero have "scored a lot of goals" but Totti "did not even trouble the goalscoring charts" as you put it.This is the European Golden Boot winner we are talking of here.

Again, you highlighted your problem by saying that Totti plays in the Trequartista position. That was a fairly recent modification to his role.He started his career as a midfielder, even playing as a left winger,it was only under Capello that he started playing the trequartista position.Even then, his goals ratio is comparable to greats like Del Piero and Baggio who have rarely ever played as midfielders.

As for Totti not doing well in the Champions League, what do you expect when playing for a modest team like Roma? If he had been playing for the bigger sides like Juve or Milan, his record would be different.

^^^^ Look, my guy - how is Deco overrated? I have never heard any sports commentator say that Deco is the best midfielder in the World or even close. He may not score goals but he dominates the midfield.
So its now "dominating midfield"? You don change from blaming Ten Cate for his lack of goals to claiming that he is dominating the midfield. For me the issue is simple, this guy was not good enough to make the Brazilian national team. All the accolades he receives are over the top.

You are wasting your time asking these questions.Do you know why people here find the speech "incredible and very insightful"? Because the media told them the speech was brilliant. If you look throughout this forum for the past 3 days, nobody has been able to articulate in their own words why they find this speech inspiring. This is herd mentality at work. The best you will hear is,"the speech is brilliant because everyone has been saying so".

Listen, Someone on the other thread tried to claim the Reverend Wright's issue was taken out of context, now the same context argument is being tried on this "TYPICAL WHITE PERSON" comment made by obama.
The typical thing about those who offer a "context" defence, like M'uslims trying to defend a controversial scriptural verse,is that they fail to produce the alternative context in which the controversial remarks could be understood.

As someone noted,in what context can "God Damn America" be justified? In what context can celebrating Louis Farrakhan or Ghadaffi be justified?

I hope this is just mis-information from Old Trafford because Rio is going to be a big loss.Good thing Vidic wasn't seriously injured from that elbow on the nose.A defence pairing of O'Sh*t and Brown will be enough to induce hypertension.

In who's prime? Please don't start.

If you read my post, I said that I am not saying these players are poor - they just don't deserve their profile. Did you know that in Italy, Totti is considered one of the top three players in the world? OK - Name one major tournament that he has been a success in.
I concede that but most of football is played at club level and Totti has been consistent. If you start using tournaments as your metric, remember people like Diouf outshone Henry in the 2002 World Cup.People like Raul and Van Nistelrooy haven't exactly set tournaments alight, does that mean they are overrated?

And yes, he was top scorer in Serie A last year. How many years has he been playing football and did not even trouble the goalscoring charts?
Na here you identify your problem.Totti was only recently converted to a striker,so how was he supposed to topping the goals charts?

Whatever you say,you can't knock 5 times Italian Footballer of the Year in one of the top 3 leagues in the world.

No, I don't rate him as the best - but I do not think he is overrated. Don't kick Deco when he's down. Have you seen Deco play live? I have seen play against Brazil where he and Quaresma completely ran the show. For your info, he doesn't score as much at Barca because he has more defensive duties. Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto do not cross the half-way line. That is why Henk Ten Cate devised a pressing game which means that Deco is no longer an attacking midfielder, but a central midfielder.
Defensive wetin? Barca spend most of their time on the attack, how many times is he performing the said defensive role?

Even when he was at Porto,in the season they won the UCL,he only scored 4 or 5 goals. Was it the same defensive role he was performing? Is his 3 goals in 51 appearances for Portugal because of this defensive role you are talking about?

@Ibime

How can you say Totti is overrated? Is it because of his poor form for Italy in the World and European Cups? That is a major minus in Totti's career. However, he has been a colossus for Roma for a decade now. He won the European Golden Boot last season,he has been voted Italian Footballer of the Year 5 times now.

To me,he is one of the greatest players I have ever seen.If anything,he is underrated.I always felt, when he was still playing as a midfielder, that he was as good as Zidane was in his prime.

You rate Deco highly? Is it his goal scoring exploits(virtually non-existent) or his level of assists(relatively meager)? Deco is one of the most overrated players.I always felt Barca made a huge mistake letting Riquelme go and signing Deco.Deco is old news anyway,he is not even sure of a starting place anymore.

None. But then that does not mean that they don't. Hacve You ever heard of the dark side of the CIA. It is neither a tale nor a myth.
Intelligence operations, almost by definition, involve killings, in many cases, of civilians. If you broadened the meaning of terrorist to include every conceivable organisation that kills or has killed civilians(whether its the Bakassi Boys or the Sicilian Mafia) that would strip the term of its unique meaning and render it useless. Is the Nigerian police a terrorist organisation because it regularly kills civilians and "terrorises" innocents to part with their cash?

Terrorists groups are those whose raisond'etre is the indiscriminate killing of civilians.Alternatively,it can be used to describe groups whose main MO is the indiscriminate killing of civilians.

Sure, many security services(especially intelligence services)may occasionally engage in activities that border on terrorism ,but to label them terrorist will be to stretch the meaning of terrorist beyond reason.

@4 play,
There are 2 kinds of fathers: spiritual and physical.
grin grin

Well,if this risible classification was the case, the correct question you should have posed initially should have been:will you disown your pastor for saying controversial things?A lot of people would say, yes.

Again,I stress, the salient issue is the fact that Obama in his wisdom took the decision to become involved with this particular purveyor of incendiary remarks.Rev Wright was well known for his kooky ideas. This was a man that,in the 60s, chose the path proposed by Malcom X over the uniting message of love preached by Martin Luther King.

For Obama, whose campaign is predicated on his supposed ability to unite the nation,to have gotten "into bed" with this rabble rouser is particularly telling.Action speaks louder than words.

In a couple of weeks, this issue would die naturally when all the anger has subsided and people are more able to reason. Anger impairs proper reasoning.
This is wishful thinking. This issue will continue to resonate till the general election.Obama has been hemorrhaging support in the polls ever since this issue came to light.
