CelebritiesRe: Tiger Woods Finally Speaks: 'I Am Deeply Sorry' by 4Play(m): 11:42pm On Mar 02, 2010
Tiger's ex comes to his defence:

Tiger Woods was my boyfriend for a year and a half while we were both undergraduates at Stanford. I've never spoken to the press about him; I'm not coming forward now for money or to advance any pathetic showbiz aspirations, but merely to stick up for a friend. I haven't seen Tiger since the late ’90s, but I know who he is at his core because we were together during some of his most formative years. He was so human and cared so much about other people and the world around him. This may surprise some people, but Tiger was a great boyfriend.

I have so many fond memories of our time together. At that age Tiger had an amazing metabolism so we spent a lot of time eating. Our favorite restaurant was a Chinese joint in Mountain View; the guys there must have been golf fans because they always gave us free desserts, which was a big deal to us.

I walked many golf courses watching Tiger play, sometimes with his mother, Tida. I grew up on an Indian reservation in Minnesota, and I think Tida accepted me so readily because Tiger and I shared many of the same values. Earl and I talked a lot about politics and national affairs, and Earl often made me laugh so hard, my stomach muscles cramped. He loved to tease Tiger and me about our puppy love.

During our Southern California road trips Tiger and I spent a lot of time at the beach. We would steal a bottle of whiskey from Earl or I’d use my fake ID to buy a jug of wine, and we’d hang out and dream about the future. Tiger was very driven to be a great golfer, but he also talked a lot about wanting to make a larger contribution to society. Settling down was not a priority; Earl had drilled into Tiger that he should wait until his 30s to get married.

Our relationship ended when Tiger turned pro after his sophomore year. Becoming the first person in my family to earn a college degree was so important to me that I wasn’t willing to give up my studies to follow him. Like everyone else, I was shocked by the revelations about his infidelities. The Tiger I knew was loyal, devoted and self- controlled. I’m not naive, but I can say with certainty that he was faithful during the time we dated. The speculation that he's being treated for sex addiction is surprising because we enjoyed a normal sexual relationship.

I don’t have any insight into how he led such a double life. I will say that Tiger had an ability to shut things out and compartmentalize his emotions. Even back then he felt enormous pressure to be Tiger Woods. Maybe this was his form of escape.

Obviously Tiger has made some big mistakes, but he’s apologized and seems to be trying to heal himself and his family. I hope the public will forgive him because he deserves a second chance. He’s a good person with a caring heart.

Foreign AffairsWar Council In Damascus by 4Play(op): 12:23am On Mar 02, 2010
The three-party meeting that took place in Damascus on Friday gathering the Syrian president Bashar al Assad, the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Hizbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was a war council to devise counterattack plans and assign tasks in the event of an Israeli offensive on one or all parties, wrote Abdelbari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of the pan-Arab newspaper Al Quds al Arabi.

“The timing of the meeting, the way it was undertaken and the ensuing press conference that was held at its conclusion, all point to a strategic coalition being reinforced. This is the build-up of a new front that will spearhead the confrontation with the US-Israeli alliance and whichever Arab countries that may, expressly or implicitly, be affiliated with it.”

The Iranian president said he expects war to break out somewhere between spring and summer of this year. Meanwhile, the Hizbollah chief vowed to strike the Israeli capital, its airports and power stations if Israel dared to attack Beirut’s critical infrastructure.

“Indeed, we are being exposed to a new discourse here, an unprecedented sense of self-confidence and an unheard-of preparedness for retaliation.”

For its part, the Syrian leadership appears to have made up its mind to close off the US administration’s “trite and cheap” flirtation with Damascus and opted for bolstering its tactical partnership with Tehran.

Foreign AffairsRe: The New Generation Leaving Ireland by 4Play(m): 8:25pm On Mar 01, 2010
@Ibime

You are quite a raving ignoramus. How is the present economic crises down to taxation? Yes, Ireland's low corporation tax was hailed around the world but I'm not aware it has been raised. Greece has virtually double Ireland's corporate tax rate, is Greece any better than Ireland?

Only a foo'l will take a particular period in history as sufficient to judge the quality of an economic philosophy. So after Ireland has enjoyed decades of economic growth, after decades of statist economic policy left Ireland poor compared to the rest of Europe, a few years of recession suddenly means that the economic policy that underpinned the breakneck growth is fatally flawed? Do yourself a favour, go and enlighten yourself a bit more or stick to hip-hop.

PS: Why did you fail to note that Ireland is cutting spending drastically?

PoliticsRe: Militants Takes Over Ebonyi State As Business And Movement Are Put On Hold! by 4Play(m): 8:18pm On Feb 23, 2010
ABAKALIKI—FOUR days after the seizure of the Ezza-Ezillo disputed land by suspected hired militants, who over powered both the military and police, Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, yesterday visited the war front, where no fewer than five policemen were reportedly killed by the militants.

Governor Elechi in company of the newly posted Commissioner of Police, drove round the communities of Ezillo, promising, however, to deal with the situation and stop the lawlessness.
He said that those perpetrating the war were criminals that must be dealt with.
T
he corpses that were said to be littered on the war field were, however, not seen, as they may have been cleared by the special mobile policemen that were drafted to the place. Road blocks have also returned to the war spots on the Enugu-Abakaliki highway while skeletal vehicular movements was noticed at the spot that was deserted since last week Friday, when the militants took control of the spot, killing innocent commuters and some policemen.

The communal war last Friday assumed a frightening dimension as men of the Nigerian Police Force were overran by the militants that confronted them, burnt two police vans and smashed police armoured tanks that were recently acquired by the Ebonyi State government.

Also the Minister for Works, Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Hassan Lawal, who was bailed to visit the state could not get into the state as the Enugu-Abakaliki Road was overtaken by the militants. Police eyewitness was quoted as saying that the militants turned into skeleton, making it difficult to capture them.

Movement between Abakalik and Enugu is now frustrating as commuters use the bush paths of Agba-Ezzagu to Nkanu areas of Enugu State. Others have opted to ply from Enugu to Okigwe-Afikpo and back to Abakaliki

Not really, I use classical logic to prove points which is quite hard to understand if you have never taken philosophy. But basically I was pointing out to the fact you presenting and interpreting GCSE statistics as evidence for Asian achievement is incorrect. Funny that you presented the data while unwilling to accept an interpretation.
More like classical illogic. Asian migrants are smarter and their educational performance serves as evidence of this. The alternative, evidence that their African counterparts are equally as smart, is sadly lacking on this thread apart from a lot of hot air.

The GCSE results are not IQ tests but merely serve as evidence of my larger point. The difference between gender is highly understandable. IQ tests do not show difference in gender as the average man's IQ matches the average woman's IQ. The difference in certain aspects of mental ability, like the link you copied and pasted, does not prove much about gender IQ unless you want to make the absurd claim that quantitative ability is all there is to IQ.

I would point out to socioeconomic factors as well as self-perception as a result of low black achievement. The major reasons why African immigrants do well is that they have been socialized to do well. Moreover our educational system has significantly giving us an edge that we never notice which is way better than the poor public schools the majority of black kids go to in the US. Magnet high schools and schools in wealthy suburbs in the US are predominantly White and these schools have the best teachers and best guidance counselors. Asians when they move to the US, send their kids to this school and this gives them the same edge. There are so many factors sigh.
Any time I ask for something empirical, you cling on to your conjecture which, with all due respect, I have little regard for. I would love solid evidence of Africans matching Asian intellectual ability which, but for all your wonderful conjecture, would have blossomed. I guess we have to tell ourselves these stories to soothe our ego.

African immigrants do well because they are often drawn from the most educated demographic of the African society in the first place. It's not the average Nigerian(non-graduate and barely literate) who gets handed a visa by the US embassy and migrates to the US. It's a pre-selected demographic who do not constitute a fair representation of the average Nigerian. Indeed, it's for that very reason that US will let them in in the first place. This is the answer to this:
So how do you explain the over representation of second generation Nigerians and other Africans in science and engineering compared to other black people (native blacks in the US or UK).
LOL, I dont understand you man. You said is the average Nigerian a graduate and I pointed out that being a graduate in Nigeria and IQ levels are mutually exclusive. The average Nigerian migrant is not smarter than the average Nigerian at home. Just more driven to look for a better place to work at. Is there any evidence to show that an average African immigrant is more intellectually capable than his counterparts in Nigeria? Remember Nigeria is not like China and India where education is a priority in the Government. Like if a significant part of the Nigerian populace or the African populace is denied access to education, how do you expect to get good statistics on IQ levels and such. How can the son of a vulcanizer in west Africa do well in an IQ test compared to an Indian born in the slums of Mumbai but who has the opportunity to be exposed to the growing software industry around him and so is able to experience an environment that despite his poor surroundings give him the arsenal to succeed in IQ tests.
My point is easy to understand. It's very hard to fathom how you can suggest that the intellectual ability of the average Nigerian migrant is the same as that of the average Nigerian back home. Same goes for migrants generally vis-a-vis their home community. You can hypothesise till eternity but the reality is that a well educated person will have greater intellectual ability than an illiterate.

Back in India, many Indians are illiterate. Indian migrants, just like their Naija counterparts, are drawn from the highly educated demographic and are not representative of the average Indian. Where there is a difference is the relative performance of the average Indian migrant compared to the average Nigerian migrant.

My analogy was based on your basic reading of the stats without any analysis. The UK might have Universal education but is the quality the same throughout? Not from what I have heard. I am sure schools with significant black population will be significantly less funded than those in white majority areas.
Another voodoo social analysis. Are Chinese/Indians white people who got allocated houses in white majority neighbourhoods and got to go to white schools? These people started from the bottom like many Nigerian migrants by moving into deprived neighbourhoods before working their way up.

Even if you want to explain away their better performance compared to us, you are still unable to explain why they resoundingly trounce whites in their own country. I'm sure in the states, Asian kids outperform white kids.

SEFAGO:
From the GCSE stats, Girls consistently outperform men- so are women smarter than men?  grin Or did you conveniently forget to consider a socioeconomic analysis of these statistics?
That's a silly comparison. IQ tests show no difference between the genders and the difference in GCSE performance, which I assume applies in US as well, is a function of girls maturing faster than boys. However, for the purpose of this thread, the results show an undeniable trend - Chinese and Indian kids outperforming whites and other races.

Do you have any enlightening insight to explain this clear case of over-achievement? I'm all ears.

Also from previous Jamb statistics and performances at the secondary and university level in Nigeria you are confidently say that the people in Southern Nigeria are smarter than a large majority of people in the North due to genetic or inherent intellectual differences . As absurd as that sounds, I am sure you would find sympathizers in the politics section of NL.
Another stupid analogy. If the country had universal education, there will be no noteworthy difference between Southern and Northern educational achievements.

In the UK, blacks and Asians have universal education. However, these Asians still outperform their black counterparts. This is far cry from Nigeria where disproportionate numbers of Northern Nigerians do not attend schools in the first place, rendering pointless any comparison by region of JAMB stats.

This has nothing to do with IQ but opportunity. Living in Lagos, I have come across thousands of people who have dropped out of school for financial reasons. They would love to go to school and if given the opportunity would excel extremely well. You could say the same for India too though but less so for China.
That's besides the point. The average Nigerian migrant is not representative of the average Nigerian back home. That there are bright people who lacked the opportunity to make much of their talents does not alter this relevant point.
Christianity EtcRe: Should Religious Dogma Be Free From Criticism? by 4Play(m): 1:31am On Feb 20, 2010
thehomer:
You call the question ignorant. Is there such a thing? There may be non-questions or questions based on faulty assumptions but ignorant? Generally when someone asks a question, it may simply be because the person does not know. You could answer the questions or at least help the person as to where the information can be obtained.

These are the two meanings that more closely show what I meant.
# Not specifically religious.
# Temporal; something that is worldly or otherwise not based on something timeless.

Pretty much all countries without state religions can be said to push secular beliefs so what is special about Stalin's case?
The questions you pose are obscenely ignorant. It's tantamount to asking whether Hitler was racist. There is a world of difference between a state without state religion and a state that is virulently anti-religion.

Stalin was viciously anti-religion,so much so, that he sought to abolish organised religion by waging a campaign of terror against it and religious adherents. Same applies to Mao. Their very own philosophy promoted non-belief and sought to impose this by force leading to the deaths of millions

Surely, freedom should have flourished in such a situation where religion was in shackles, which is the premise promoted by this thread. Clearly it didn't.
