GCSE performance

In 2004 Chinese pupils were the most likely to achieve five or more GCSE grades A*-C in England, with 79 per cent of Chinese girls and 70 per cent of Chinese boys respectively. Indian pupils had the next highest achievement levels: 72 per cent of Indian girls and 62 per cent of Indian boys achieved these levels.

The lowest levels of GCSE attainment were among Black Caribbean pupils, particularly boys. Only 27 per cent of Black Caribbean boys and 44 per cent of Black Caribbean girls achieved five or more A*-C grade GCSEs. Pupils from the Black African, Other Black and Mixed White and Black Caribbean groups had the next lowest levels of attainment.
These are stats for British Asians of Chinese/Indian origin. Many British Indians migrated from Kenya/Uganda. GCSE is a high school exam. Notice how they significantly outperform whites.

That there are more asians or people of asian descent in Ivy league institutions is due to several factors which include:
1. Asians are about 60% of the world population and thus even if picked at random, you would expect them to constitute more than half of the student body.
Your premise is clearly false. Your presumption is that the proportion of applicants to Ivy League institutions who are Asians reflects the proportion of humans who are Asians. If we go by the same logic, at least 10% of Ivy League students should be Black Africans as Black Africans constitute at least 10% of the world's population. We can use this for every racial/religious/ethnic grouping on the planet.

. Government and private institutions (like samsung) from those regions provide strong financial support for their graduate students; directly through fellowships and scholarships, and indirectly by giving financial supports to professors with strong asian content in their research groups.
Enough financial support to explain Asian over-achievement? There is no evidence that Indians/Chinese students receive any more financial aid than others.

A salient point is missed by you. Asian over-achievement applies just as well to Asian Americans and, here in the UK, British Asians. Fact is these people do not receive funding from Asians Govts or Asian companies but they significantly overachieve. How can you explain away over-achievement by Western nationals of Asian origin at even high school level to funding(which they don't receive) from Asian Govts/companies?

3. While sad, there is a racial under current in graduate admissions, with most professors having a bias in admitting one of their own. This has resulted in existing majority populations growing bigger, hereby dominating the PhD products and thus in turn by feedback increasing their presence at the faculty level. Essentially an avalanche effect.
The Ivy League institutions started as white dominated centres. Surely, if it was a case of racism, Asians won't gain any such foothold in these institutions? By your logic, the whites would have kept out the Asians as whites, not Asians, are the majority population.

4. The asian communities are making conscious efforts to increase the dominance, with most female asian students (particularly in science and engineering) heading into academia to further increase their presence at the faculty level.
That's an absurd point. Of course, intellectually gifted people will make conscious efforts to continue to dominate.
My people perish for lack of knowledge. The asians provide communal support for prospective students and existing ones, which help them to sustain the required level of academic excellence. While blacks, already handicapped by being in the minority, do not work together nor share information well enough to help each other.
Pretty much as your 4th point.

Last time I checked, in the UK and the US, blacks outnumber Asians. British Asians and American Asians, both of who are outnumbered by blacks in their respective countries, far outperform blacks. Seriously, who is the minority?

Just to add, the embassy screens for education and income(a proxy for IQ) before letting you in.

SEFAGO:
I beg to differ. American embassy don't take IQ tests before they let you into their country. People have given a similar reason for why African Immigrants supposedly had a lot of PhDs.
The fact is that a disproportionate part of the migrant population is drawn from the most educated and successful demographic of the country the migrants are vacating from. To the extent that these factors are linked to higher IQ, the migrants would have, on average, higher IQ than their home communities.

The average African immigrant does not represent his home community. Is the average Nigerian a graduate?

I don't believe intellectual ability differs amongst race. Just exposure to opportunities. For example, my one of my friends struggled while in high school in Nigeria, especially in science subjects but in his University in the US he is a phenomenal student. His University just recently started admitting black students just after desegregation 40 years ago. However, despite the fact that he was an average student in Nigeria, he is one of the best mathematics students in his school (Which by the way is a very good school). My example is not for self-aggrandizement, but to point out that being aware of opportunities and taking them defines the successful student.

However, most Africans are not aware of opportunities available to them.
That's anecdotal and it doesn't have much value. The fact is that Ivy League institituions have an over-representation of Indians/Chinese. If ability did not differ amongst races, unless we are talking of a clear case of racism, each race would more or less be equally represented.

Indians are smart thats the basic truth. Instead of us acknowledging it and working to be as brilliant as this people we will keep denying it claiming its their large population. I am sure when the guy is done he will get job offers from Boston Consulting Group while the Nigerian is obsessed with getting a job at an oil company. One way mind grin.
Indians are smart up to a point. Migrant Indians, as opposed to Indians in general, are notably generally smarter. That could be a function of the fact that these represent the cream of a population of 1bn plus.

However, if you take Africans in general, the migrant Indians are more successful than the migrant African so there is some truth to your point. In reality, as much as it's politically incorrect to say, intellectual ability differs amongst races.
Foreign AffairsRe: 67 Year Old Oyibo Man Beats Up Young Black Man On The Bus by 4Play(m): 7:53pm On Feb 19, 2010
The old man has history: grin
The 67-year-old man captured in a YouTube video beating up a fellow bus passenger was involved in another altercation that became an internet hit last year.

Thomas Bruso was Tasered twice by police last August at an Oakland A's baseball game.
The 6ft 1ins, 20 stone pensioner - who calls himself 'Tom Slick,' 'Vietnam Tom' and 'Epic Beard Man' - was confronted by stadium staff when he brought alcohol into the stadium.
When Bruso refused to leave, Coliseum security asked Oakland police officers working at the game to eject him.

Three officers verbally tried several times to get Bruso to leave, but he refused.
The situation quickly escalated after Bruso made a rude gesture at one of the two officers.
They then placed a handcuff on Bruso's left wrist.
A third officer arrived with a Taser, stunning the man in the left shoulder blade while another officer was placing the other cuff on Bruso's right wrist.
The third officer applied the Taser on Bruso again, this time near the middle of his back, which caused Bruso to fall forward into an aisle.

He was charged with resisting arrest and taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
The latest altercation involving Bruso began when a younger black man began yelling at him as the pair sat across from one another on the bus.
Bruso was taken to the John George Psychiatric Pavilion for an evaluation after he struck the male passenger several times and continued to rant about the incident, Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

PoliticsRe: Nitel Sold For $2.5b by 4Play(m): 1:55am On Feb 19, 2010
hina Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. and Telecom Corp. of New Zealand said they didn’t participate in a government auction to buy Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd (Nitel), contradicting a public announcement by the Bureau of Public Entreprises (BPE) the government agency superintending the sale of Nitel.

Neither Unicom nor its unlisted parent joined the bidding for Nitel, Sophia Tso, a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for the Beijing-based company, said by phone today. Telecom Corp.’s Telecom New Zealand isn’t part of a group bidding for Nitel, said Mark Watts, spokesman for the Auckland-based company said by phone, Bloomberg reports.

The BPE shortlisted five investor groups in the auction for state-owned Nitel, which has lost market share to private operators entering Africa’s fastest- growing phone market. The government this week said a group comprising Unicom, China’s No. 2 mobile carrier, submitted a $2.5 billion offer, and was chosen as preferred bidder.

The purported offer for a 75 percent stake in Nitel was “relatively high” compared with the valuation in Bharti Airtel Ltd.’s proposed $9 billion purchase of the African wireless assets of Kuwait’s Zain, Nomura Holdings Inc. analyst Danny Chu wrote in a report yesterday. Nitel’s annual ebitda, or earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization was estimated at about $13 million, according to Chu.

Bharti Airtel’s bid for the Zain assets was valued at about 7.4 times ebitda, while paying $2.5 billion for the Nitel stake would be equivalent to more than 100 times ebitda, according to Nomura’s Chu.
If we use Bharti's bid for Zain of 7.4 multiples of earnings as a benchmark and the $13 million annual earnings estimate, NITEL is worth $96.2 million. A far cry from the reported $2.5bn. Even if you adjust for the incredible potential that a huge market like Nigeria promises, no serious offer will be north of $1bn.

Nigeria never ceases to amaze me:
. . . . . .

On Thursday, however, the hype over the Nitel deal gave way to bewilderment as China Unicom denied any involvement in the bid.

As the initial news of China Unicom’s involvement came straight from officials of Nigeria’s National Council on Privatisation at press briefing in Abuja this week (and was duly reported by news organisations ranging from the FT to Bloomberg and Reuters and the Wall Street Journal) clearly, someone is lying.
grin grin grin

Nigeria is clearly a nut house. No heads will roll over this:
A single big deal in African telecoms might look like a bold gamble, (or a very expensive bout of M&A whimsy). But two in a week, worth a combined $13.2bn, made it look like the Chinese and Indians know something about the prospects for African telecoms that some other big telco players don’t. Actually it now seems that some people – including the Nigerians – don’t even know who’s bidding for what.

We’re talking about the planned $10.7bn deal by India’s Bharti Airtel for the African telecom assets of Kuwaiti group Zain, announced on Tuesday, and the $2.5bn bid for a majority stake in Nitel, Nigeria’s former state telecom monopoly, by New Generation, a consortium that was widely reported on Wednesday to have included China’s Unicom as well as Minerva, of Dubai, and GiCell, a small Nigerian telco .

This raised eyebrows on this thread, the premium between the winning bid and the runner up bid.
Regardless of whether China Unicom is involved or not, the New Generation bid $1.5bn more than the second-highest offer for troubled Nitel, causing some investors to wince at the price tag for a company that clearly has some big problems.

If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Why did this have to happen?”  The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time.  The writing process, started many months ago, was intended to be therapy in the face of the looming realization that there isn’t enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken.  Needless to say, this rant could fill volumes with example after example if I would let it.  I find the process of writing it frustrating, tedious, and probably pointless… especially given my gross inability to gracefully articulate my thoughts in light of the storm raging in my head.  Exactly what is therapeutic about that I’m not sure, but desperate times call for desperate measures. . .

I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different.  I am finally ready to stop this insanity.  Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let’s try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Manchester United Fan Thread! We Are The Red Devils! by 4Play(m): 2:03pm On Feb 14, 2010
MANCHESTER is on course for another summer of transfer strife with wealthy Manchester City preparing to move for their neighbours’ unsettled centre-back Nemanja Vidic. The move would form part of City’s strategy to replace Manchester United as England’s premier football club, and echoes their successful poaching of Carlos Tevez from Old Trafford last year.

Like Tevez, Vidic is understood to feel undervalued and he has attracted the interest of several leading clubs, including Real Madrid and AC Milan. The 28-year-old Serbia international’s contract expires in 2012 and United are yet to talk about extending it.

Despite signing Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure for combined transfer fees of £40m, central defence remains a weak area for City. An approach to Vidic in the summer would be modelled on the attempt to lure John Terry from Chelsea in the last close season. City promised to double the then-England captain’s wages to £250,000 a week. Encouraged by communication from Terry that he would move should a transfer be agreed with Chelsea, City made a series of substantial offers, all of them rejected.

City’s interest is unlikely to be welcomed by Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s manager. He has had to deal with problems in central defence all season, with both Vidic and Rio Ferdinand frequent absentees. In January, United agreed an £10m deal for Fulham’s Chris Smalling. They are also monitoring the centre-back’s England under-21 teammate Jack Rodwell, of Everton, and Denmark international Simon Kjaer. Vidic, inset, feels that performances that saw him named as the Premier League Player of the Season last term should be rewarded with promotion into the £100,000-a-week wage bracket. Offers from City and Madrid to exceed those terms means Ferguson would have to sell to a major rival, improve Vidic’s pay or try to manage a disgruntled performer.

Today’s Fox News Sunday panel looked at Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to hold terrorist trials in federal courts rather than military commissions. The discussion quickly shifted to Holder himself, and whether he should be fired. NPR’s Juan Williams argued that Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol and Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer were lobbing “unjustified” attacks on Holder since the Bush administration repeatedly tried terrorists in civilian courts.

Krauthammer then cited the case of the failed Christmas Day bombing by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, saying that the Obama administration should have assumed that he “has people who are working with him” because he’s Nigerian:

KRAUTHAMMER: You arrest a guy who’s got a bomb in his underpants. You know, it’s likely he didn’t do it at home in his kitchen. … The guy is Nigerian. You’ve got to assume — you have to assume that he has people who are working with him.

WILLIAMS: Because he’s a Nigerian?

KRAUTHAMMER: Why do you assume otherwise? It makes no sense at all. You capture a terrorist and in almost all of our plots there are groups of terrorists. [, ]

RomanceA Strong Case For Polygamy! by 4Play(op): 11:53pm On Feb 11, 2010
A new study has found that the practice of polygamy reduces the spread of HIV. This would explain why Muslim areas have lower HIV infection rates compared to proximate non-Muslim areas. Nigeria is a prime example.

The relationship between lower HIV rates and polygamy could be a case of correlation as opposed to causation but it's certainly an interesting study.

The ecological association between polygyny and HIV prevalence is negative at the country as well as sub‐national level: HIV prevalence is lower in countries where the practice of polygyny is common, and within countries it is lower in areas with higher levels of polygyny.

Proposed explanations for the protective effect of polygyny include the distinctive structure of sexual networks produced by polygyny, the disproportionate recruitment of HIV positive women into marriages with a polygynous husband, and the lower coital frequency in conjugal units of polygynous marriages.
