The case of Michelin and Dunlop is quite different. Perhaps you should read up on why they folded up in Nigeria. And I am not necessarily talking about local providers. The Nigerian market is probably the major market in Africa. The competition with Orange, Vodacom, etc in Ghana, South Africa and other African countries is one major reason MTN cannot afford to lose Nigeria with its massive market share.

It is funny how you could say DStv already has competitors in Nigeria. I would have argued that no Nigerian could say such but then again... Just so you know, DStv is running a monopolized market in Nigeria. While the other petty cables show the Bundesliga, and Serie A, Multichoice is the only one with the rights to air the Premiership. How then is this a fair competition?

Should South African companies get shown the door in Nigeria, which I am praying for, local providers will conveniently thrive at a steady pace. Perhaps you didn't know one of the major reasons why most of the so called competitors don't last is because of some deliberate actions by certain people in Government doing the bidding of these foreign companies in Nigeria.

You'd be amazed at how their would be new companies begging for operating licenses should South African companies get the kick. Bharti Airtel will no doubt revel the day it happens.
Exactly how is it “unfair”? They bought and paid for the rights...
You apparently didn’t know (or forgot) that Hi-TV once bought and own same rights - and it was a DISASTER.

And just btw, it’s no different from NBC owning EPL rights in the US...
Or Skysports in the UK itself, or BeIN Sports in the Middle East. That’s basic ‘free’ market COMPETITION.

Meanwhile, you didn’t explain why you classify the case of the tire manufacturers as different...
But I fail to see the difference. 2 foreign investors left and were not replaced by local or foreign investors.

Nigeria is admittedly a GREAT market for MTN and I doubt they’ll leave unless forced to (hence why they opted to pay the mega-fine and to list on the local bourse), but Nigerians should not overplay this so-called “huge” market narrative. We are presently the World’s Capital of Extreme Poverty (which means the largest absolute and percentile numbers of people living in extreme poverty) and growing, with little or no indices that the ruling class has the foggiest idea how to reverse the trend. It doesn’t necessarily affect a company like MTN that much because SIM cards are relatively dirt cheap, but the brutal reality is that with hordes of well-educated skilled and middle-class Nigerians emigrating in droves, effective consumer demand is way much SMALLER than the supposedly huge population numbers would ordinarily suggest. In fact, by most estimates it’s not more than 5 million effective demand for leisure and luxury (ie, non-essential) goods and services.

Nigeria requires MASSIVE foreign (together with domestic) investment to create the millions of jobs it’s ever-growing population desperately and even to finance infrastructure (that would further engender investment and productivity). Arbitrarily kicking and/or expropriating the country’s single BIGGEST (non-hydrocarbon) foreign investors for events beyond their control and in which they have absolutely NO direct (or even indirect) link or nexus to sends the worst possible signals to any and all foreign investors contemplating in this country which already has an appalling reputation for poor infrastructure, rampant efficiency, often poorly-educated and skilled work force and spectacular corruption.

And why should an ordinary Nigerian worker minding his own business “feel the heat” for attacks on his brothers in SA?
Did his employer (MTN) lead, support, supply, instigate or feed the attacks? Why should he join the 25% unemployment market?

Nigeria decided to pay because the affected people are British and British didn't attack any Nigerian interest.

What SA is doing today is act of war and if our govt decides to nationalize their shares in MTN, Shoprite and the others in the name of national security they don't need to pay any shitt.

One Executive Order would take care of the rest.
Again, don't forget that SA doesn't owe more than 40% stake in any of those companies.
These are PRIVATE companies...
Accordingly, SA itself does not own ANY % of them (except perhaps through pension funds).

Nonetheless, those companies are either...
Majority-owned (MTN) or wholly-owned (Shoprite and DSTV) by SA corporate entities.

I hear people say this every time but it is high time some of you understood what would happen. MTN will lose on all fronts when they leave Nigeria. They own the largest market share in the Nigerian telecom market with 43%. When South African companies leave Nigeria, a lot of Nigerians will be out of jobs but the move will eventually mean open doors to other brands and businesses that are not South Africa's.

Beyond that, existing service providers will upscale, resource and manpower wise in other to further accommodate and boost its new share of acquisition in the Nigerian telecom market. The same will apply to cable television providers who will seize the opportunity to break into the Nigerian market.

In the end, Nigerians that are out of jobs as a result of this move will get better opportunities when new companies come in, since they have acquired experience in their various fields.

South African companies, save for Stanbic are doing incredibly well in Nigeria than in other countries.
All of what you foresee could conceivably occur but it is (perhaps naively) overly optimistic...
Michelin (and was it Goodyear?) left Nigeria and nobody stepped into the breach while our rubber plantations died.

Even if we have local providers step in...
The track record of local telecoms companies (even Glo) is not exactly top-notch. Consumers may ended up paying more for less.

Meanwhile, DSTV already has several local competitors (as well as the JV Startimes)...
But, as with the local telecoms companies, service is less than desirable (the worst case being the defunct Hi-TV).

Btw, it’s not true that all SA companies (bar Stanbic) make a killing in Nigeria...
Tiger Foods, Nandos, the NSE-listed Multichoice (before it returned), SASOL, Telkom, etc., had nothing but woes.

Finally, the fallout would hardly be limited to SA...
The biggest would be dearth of future FDI after you’ve run your BIGGEST foreign investor out of turn for no fault of theirs.

You are still a kid in international politics.

Government will not allow them to leave. They would freeze their assets and then nationalize their shares of MTN Nigeria stake and sell it to Nigeria citizens.

Union Bank and Forte Oil (formerly AP) were former british firms. The military government nationalized them, took over all their assets, deport them from Nigeria and sell the companies to Nigerians.

MTN cannot leave Nigeria unless we allowed them.

In the UK, even their own citizen can't even close down a big company. Their government would nationalize it and hand it over to private investors
That’s simply incorrect...

It seems the recent $9.6 billion PI& D arbitral award has thought Nigerians nothing...
If the government appropriates their assets or nationalizes the business, it will pay HUGE compensation for it.

During our parents/grandparents time, when Nigeria nationalized Barclays (Union Bank), Standard (First Bank), BP (AP/Forte Oil), Esso (Unipetrol/Conoil), ironically as part of the struggle to liberate South Africa from Apartheid rule, it paid HUGE compensation for each (and this was when we were flush with oil money in the first “oil boom” era). Subsequently, it took a long while to regain some measure of foreign investor confidence.

Another Nigerian warped mentality. Until folks like you stop this preference for short term gain inlieu of long term discomfort and sufferning, Nigeria would NEVER go anywhere. Look at Hong Kong, the citizens knew that the bill that was introduced would have a severe lasting effects on them than the short term discomfort and suffering they would encounter now trying to stop the law. Guess what? As a people who believed in their cause and future, they decided to fight now and not leave that burden on their children for later. That's how a people get things accomplished and not always kicking the can down the road. You either fight for it now or pay for it later. I am not at all surprised what a typical Nigerian like you would choose.
Dude, I don’t like to waste time repeating myself...

So until you can ‘educate’ the rest of us how ignoring your rulers and fighting MTN changes Nigeria for the better, I will take a rain check on the needless banter. SMH

Meanwhile, as I previously noted, many Nigerians just love to blindly follow-follow (which is partly what has gotten on into our sorry national circumstances in the first place), which is why most of them would miss even the most poignant differentiations. What RATIONAL persons thinks of outgoing portfolio investments as synonymous with incoming foreign direct investment? Imitation is not synonymous with emulation, but sadly it seems some of the loudest segments of the Nigerian chattering class cannot distinguished between both.

You leave your poor inept, fantastically-corrupt rulers and attack foreign businesses directly and indirectly employing TENS OF THOUSANDS of your fellow citizens (from experienced and highly-skilled professionals to young graduates to artisans and the unskilled), chase away foreign businesses and deprive your citizens of much-needed employment in a country with 25% “official” unemployment (and probably twice as much in real terms) and even greater underemployment. How does that even begin to make any RATIONAL sense? How would losses to MTN, Shoprite or DSTV improve Nigeria’s political, social or economic condition or redress the real problems underlying the symptomatic issues if Nigeria. Talk about loudly chasing shadows in derogation of substance.

I realize that many Nigerians are just follow-follow people, but please quit comparing apples with oranges. Hong Kongers are confronting their oppressors directly. They are not flexing on innocent bystanders or foreign investors while ignoring their nation’s REAL problems.
