SHIIITHOLE:
Nigeria Close To Becoming A Failed State, Says Financial Times Of London grin

By Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

https://punchng.com/nigeria-close-to-becoming-a-failed-state-says-financial-times/

The Financial Times of London has described Nigeria as a country going backwards economically and plagued with terrorism, illiteracy, poverty, banditry, and kidnapping and risks becoming a failed state if things don’t take a drastic turn.

The UK-based newspaper said this in an editorial on Tuesday titled, ‘Nigeria at Risk of Becoming a Failed State’.

It said the abduction and subsequent rescue of over 300 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State, revived memories of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls abducted in Borno State in 2014.

According to the newspaper, while the government’s claim that no ransom was paid to the abductors of the schoolboys remains doubtful, other acts of criminality could not be overlooked.

The editorial read in part, “The government insists no ransom was paid. Scepticism is warranted. In a country going backwards economically, carjacking, kidnapping and banditry are among Nigeria’s rare growth industries. Just as the boys were going home, Nigerian pirates abducted six Ukrainian sailors off the coast.

“The definition of a failed state is one where the government is no longer in control. By this yardstick, Africa’s most populous country is teetering on the brink.”

The newspaper also questioned the claim by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that Boko Haram had been technically defeated.

It said contrary to the government’s claim, Boko Haram remained an ever-present threat

The Financial Times stated, “President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 pronounced Boko Haram technically defeated’. That has proved fanciful. Boko Haram has remained an ever-present threat. If the latest kidnapping turns out to be its work, it would mark the spread of the terrorist group from its north-eastern base.

“Even if the mass abduction was carried out by ‘ordinary’ bandits — as now looks possible — it underlines the fact of chronic criminality and violence. Deadly clashes between herders and settled farmers have spread to most parts of Nigeria. In the oil-rich, but impoverished, Delta region, extortion through the sabotage of pipelines is legendary.”

The newspaper said security is not the only area where “the state is failing”.

The Financial Times added that Nigeria has more poor people than any other country even as Nigeria has the highest number of out of school children on earth.

The newspaper stated that as oil continues to lose its value, Nigeria’s economy would worsen.

“The population, already above 200 million, is growing at a breakneck 3.2 per cent a year. The economy has stalled since 2015 and real living standards are declining. This year, the economy will shrink 4 per cent after COVID-19 dealt a further blow to oil prices.

“In any case, as the world turns greener, the elite’s scramble for oil revenue will become a game of diminishing returns. The country desperately needs to put its finances, propped up by foreign borrowing, on a sounder footing,” it said.

The newspaper said Buhari, who has less than three years left in office, must use the remainder of his term, to redouble efforts at improving security.

It advised the government to restore trust in key institutions, among them the judiciary, the security services and the electoral commission, which will preside over the 2023 elections.

The Financial Times said the #EndSARS protests led by Nigerian youths, signaled a glimmer of hope for Nigeria’s teeming youth population.

It added, “The broad coalition that found political expression this year in the EndSARS movement against police brutality provides a shard of optimism. At least Nigeria has a relatively stable democracy. Now Nigeria’s youth — creative, entrepreneurial and less tainted by the politics of extraction — should use that system to reset the country’s narrative.”

The newspaper concluded by saying that it was time for Nigeria to restructure its political system and concentrate on security, health, education, power and roads.

“At the present trajectory, the population will double to 400 million by 2050. If nothing is done, long before then, Nigeria will become a problem far too big for the world to ignore,” it warned.

Do you even know the definition of a failed state, that is one like Libya where the government has no control over the people and has little to no presence, Nigeria isn’t anywhere close to reaching that point but continue, trying to destroy Nigeria your agenda is clear

I admire your optimism,as well as rossniti the OP. but let me tell you the truth. when completed, it would not be near those prototypes in terms of building size and heights. you can already notice it from the buildings constructed already. I know quite some stuff about real estate. first of all, the fact that they are reclaiming the land will make that land very costly due to costs of reclaimation. Secondly, to raise such structures, you need serious dollar billionaires who are committed the project with all their heart. that's hard to find in Nigeria. thirdly it will be very hard to convince investors that the buildings there will be profitable to sell. up till now Dubai real estate market is still crashing. and their government has heavily borrowed from Abu Dhabi. their government has built many structures and can't convince enough people to buy. even Singapore real estate is not steady. for eko Atlantic now cheaper competition is Springing up in lekki (alaro city) and there is not much demand for office spaces as there are so many indices that result in market instability in Nigeria. there is simply not enough enterprises in Nigeria yet to justify that what was drawn there will be a reality. the place will be nice and beautiful and will definitely have stunning (Africa standard) high-rise buildings here and there. but all those out of this world skyscrapers I'm seeing, is just unrealistic.
It was conceived when Nigeria was having an economic boom which was point before, the project is slow because the economy is slow, if and when manufacturing and agriculture oic up in Nigeria and are giving proper attention by the government and Nigeria starts to grow quickly, more projects like this will spring up and there will be actual demand for it, we have to wait for that time to come in the meantime we have to work with what we have, even if the buildings are not super tall at least they are modern and stylish edifices all concentrated in one area.

Can all these computer designed prototypes be replicated in reality that is just the big question.
The Eko Pearl towers and afren tower is evidence that they stick to the computer generated models, so let’s just wait five years and see the progress on it.

No mind them. This is the dictionary definition of white elephant / misplaced priority project. It's like putting a gold ring on a pig's nose. Ignore the fundamental problem and fly to the top of the pyramid. Build multiple storey skyscrapers when we are not good at maintaining elevators. We don't have electricity. We don't have maintenance culture. Abegiii
This is a private project with absolutely no government funding so ehat white elephant are you speaking of, if you want to provide electricity to the people do it yourself and stop lamenting.

Sand filling took 5 years so yes construction did start in 2013-2014

Bro please try to respond to people without making it look like you are attacking them, Eko Atlantic is beautiful when finished, but it can never river Dubai.

Secondly the price will be so out of this world, use banana island as an example.

Another factor is the Nigeria factor that will make it so expensive, do you know that hotel the standard of Sheraton In Ikeja, room will be sold at $250, but in Dubai you will get it and much lower rate like $100 and much discount if you are staying for a week.

The rent of Eko Atlantic will be so overpriced, Regards.
That’s because they have more of it, the more world class hotels we have the cheaper they will become, Lagos only has about 5-9 world class hotels so they are very sparse but Dubai has 100s of them spread out in the city, once Eko Atlantic is complete world class hotels will be w lot more commonplace in Lagos, so the price would go down, and yes you can’t necessarily compare Eko Atlantic to the whole of Dubai because it is significantly smaller but you can compare it to some individual districts of Dubai like the marina of Dubai

Rubbish country , it taking them forever to develop this small place, unah need to leave Africa to see what development is all about. Are they not seeing it self
Construction on the project started in 2014 after 6 years of sandfilling, then we had a recession from 2016-2017, no ones going to invest into a country during a recession right? So they came back and development was starting to boom from 2018–2020, we had Azuri peninsula, A and A tower, Amni tower, Eko corporate towers I and II, Eko twin towers, Lagos sky tower, Eko Pearl ( the three other buildings) A church building, International school, but then the covid pandemic came and stalled all of these projects, stop coming here with your negativity your the one holding back Nigeria claiming that Nigeria cannot develop shut up your dirty mouth

Just shut up with your negativity, we don’t need to hear it unless it’s constructive criticism no one gives a Bleep about your dumbass opinion, this city is a massive development and it is developed you can compare it to parts of Dubai not the whole of Dubai if you said that Dubai is much larger and more developed than this fair enough but to compare it to old Dubai, no because I know how that place looks and Eko Atlantic does not compare to old Dubai, so shut the Bleep up dullard.

Nigerians are some of the most un optimistic and hateful people in the world, how can you be complaining about a project that will make Nigeria the financial hub of Africa, and attract billions of dollars worth of FDI, you assume that only rich people can buy into it, but the developers have set land aside for affordable apartment housing, but instead of checking you lament, there most always be a problem for most Nigerians, shouldn’t there, go and watch YouTube and see what other Africans think of Nigeria, saying wow what a beautiful country, they have such good leaders I wish we had a city like this, these roads are so good etc. But nigerians cannot even appreciate what they have, some of you deserve bad leadership, because whenever you do get good leadership you look for the worst parts of it, oh they have paved 50 000km of roads but there’s still 1000km unsaved what kind of nonsense is this, that’s the kind of mindset that people on this thread have, and it needs to change you cannot have a good Nigeria or a good country with bad people, the people make the country and generally on a day to day basis most people on this thread do the exact same things as the politicians they complain about

Lagos will become a financial hub in the world because of Eko Atlantic, Nigeria would be the skyscraper capital of Africa because of this project, over 400 000 jobs would be created because of this project, thank you rossniti for opening this thread.

PoliticsRe: Opinion: How Social Media Bill Will Be Enforced Through NIN/SIM Cards by Abohboy: 8:41pm On Dec 21, 2020
How are social media accounts linked with SIM cards, you post something against the government, okay they find your twitter accounts but most people don’t have their name as their twitter account, so how then do they find the phone number that was linked ( if you did use one ) for your twitter account, the theory doesn’t make any sense, how do they get the number and if they do they wouldn’t track you down, thousands of Nigerians say things against the government daily if anything like that started happening, the ICZc would be called in very quickly, so I don’t understand what you people are lamenting about.

The Saudi army has the weapons but no war experience, the Nigerians army has way more war experience than any other army in west Africa, thst is undoubted the recent navy embargo on Gambia done by the Nigerian navy shows this, there is a difference between having advanced machines with no war experience Nigeria has both advanced machines and war experience meaning they would easily defeat Ghana in a war.

The port just needs a north south rail line and it will be perfect. It's preferable the cargo moves on rails than roads so the city wont be too congested. Akwa Ibom will probably need to redesign their master plan.
Then we would need to extend the rail line from Uyo to the port site, and make sure that there is a 12 lane highway from the port to uyo, which eventually links up to the north-south highway which is being built from maiduguri to Calabar.

The last one was locked but in response to someone on the other thread, my other half of the family is yoruba, and they have all been pushing for a new port to be built somewhere else in Nigeria, but it hasn’t happened stop assuming and generalising just because a mere 10 000 of a total 40 million people don’t want something to happen and because they get news coverage doesn’t mean that all of us think the same way, so shut up and get a life we are one nation stop dividing us through ethnic lines.
PoliticsRe: Shocker : FG Approve 2 Billion For First Phase Of $4.6 Billion Ibom Deep Seaport by Abohboy: 9:10am On Dec 20, 2020
Hopefully, construction will start by 2021 and we can have the first phase completed by 2024 and then we can have two deep seaports one in ibom and the other in Lekki, I expect for the Nigeria maritime sector to have a big boom in the year 2030, that should be when both Lekki, ibom and bakassi deep seaports are completed if bakassi is ever started. Nigeria will become the hub of maritime transport on the west coast of Africa. As long as we can create good roads to link the ports to the rest of the nation as well as railways there shouldn’t be any problems, we have 10 years that should be enough time.

Nigeria has started an ambition plan to build over 300 000 affordable housing units in each of the major states of the federation and another 20 000 units in the smaller states of the federation at the end of the project they plan on giving houses to other 2 million Nigerians and creating over 1.5 million jobs across all sectors, 90% of all the products used in the project will be locally sourced, the products that aren’t mainly involve the stoves, fridges etc. This is all part of the NESP a plan made to help Nigeria climb out of the recession, another part of this plan is the solar power naija initiative to give power to over 25 million Nigerians across the nation it also entails building over 10 new solar assembly and manufacturing plants across Nigeria, making Nigeria the largest producer and user of solar panels in sub Saharan Africa outside of South Africa.
