Politics / Re: How PDP Can Win Lagos In 2015 by adewaleafolabi(m): 10:06am On Jan 02, 2013
lateef4me: There is no doubt that lagosians especially the middle class and lower class are fed of Fashola and his anti -mass policies and programmes which has rendered many people penniless to the delight of his godfather ,Bola Tinubu .

From aggrieved medical doctors,to many displaced traders and okada riders to LASU students who could no longer afford to pay their school fees, the list is endless of aggrieved lagosians who will not want to see another Fashola returns to Alausa come 2015 .

Now,to be sincere with ourselves,ACN cannot be compared to PDP when it comes to performances especially in southwest . Most of the governors PDP has given us has performed so woefully and this has given ACN some confidence that they now has SW in their pockets .

These are what I think PDP can do to win Lagos come 2015 :

1. Present Jimi Agbaje as their candidate.

2.Mobilize support for him with likes of Obanikuro,Femi Pedro,Mamora and also woo some aggrieved ACN candidates to their side .

3. Make consultations with okada riders associations, medical unions and other trade unions who has felt negative impacts of ACN led administration.

4. Draw up a blueprint for higher institutions in Lagos and make promise towards reducing LASU school fee.

5.Reduce to bearest minimium the influence of like of Bode George and his old brigade .

These are more or less a fairy tale especially in Naija politics . It is something like asking Buhari and Tinubu to forget their presidential ambitions to more acceptable, younger guys like Fashola,Oshiomole,SLS ,El Rufai etc when they finally conclude their merger talks .

This was done in Oyo. ACN pushed out PDP but guess what, all those that helped push PDP out are today screaming and wailing that ACN must leave. It goes beyond common mutual enemies. You can push the enemy away, but what happens after the enemy is removed?

@pc_guru
Prcess forking won't work since its a windows host.
sure i've considered cron but due to the unpredictable nature of the times the messages would be sent as well as the near zero lagpolicy on messages delivery i'd be forced to make cron run every minute, which i find quite annoying.

I'd use cron and live with it for a while and change hosts later.
Thanks
Programming / Background Process In PHP by adewaleafolabi(m): 6:08pm On Dec 30, 2012
Nature:
1. I am on a windows shared host which implies there's a limit to the amount of CPU resources and program execution time.
2. System admins of these hosts are usually quite unforgiving about CPU resource limit boycotting and usually suspends offenders account without warning.
3. Location redirect is effectively limited to 10 redirects

Language: PHP

Problem: I have a large a large array of over 10,000 members. I need to send an email/SMS to each of these members at random times which i simply have no control over. Trying to do this from a php page would usually break or simply not complete.
I was able to achieve some progress by breaking this array into smaller units and sending incrementally and using php redirects and JavaScript windows.location to convince the browser that its not in an endless redirect loop.

I know there would be a more efficient way of doing things. Especially one that doesn't rely on the browser or user input. for instance if the user closes the page, the sending process wouldn't complete as i need the windows.location to run within a browser.

I could use cron and tell it to run throughout the day, but am not quite comfortable with the fact that cron is running every second in a day.

Need: I want something that acts like a daemon or service which would listen for when the messages would be sent and the user can leave or close the browser or navigate to another page and the process still runs in the background.

Thanks

Programming / Advice From An Old Programmer by adewaleafolabi(m): 4:08pm On Dec 25, 2012
You've finished this book and have decided to continue with programming. Maybe it will be a career for you, or maybe it will be a hobby. You'll need some advice to make sure you continue on the right path, and get the most enjoyment out of your newly chosen activity.

I've been programming for a very long time. So long that it's incredibly boring to me. At the time that I wrote this book, I knew about 20 programming languages and could learn new ones in about a day to a week depending on how weird they were. Eventually though this just became boring and couldn't hold my interest anymore. This doesn't mean I think programming is boring, or that you will think it's boring, only that I find it uninteresting at this point in my journey.

What I discovered after this journey of learning is that it's not the languages that matter but what you do with them. Actually, I always knew that, but I'd get distracted by the languages and forget it periodically. Now I never forget it, and neither should you.

Which programming language you learn and use doesn't matter. Do not get sucked into the religion surrounding programming languages as that will only blind you to their true purpose of being your tool for doing interesting things.

Programming as an intellectual activity is the only art form that allows you to create interactive art. You can create projects that other people can play with, and you can talk to them indirectly. No other art form is quite this interactive. Movies flow to the audience in one direction. Paintings do not move. Code goes both ways.

Programming as a profession is only moderately interesting. It can be a good job, but you could make about the same money and be happier running a fast food joint. You're much better off using code as your secret weapon in another profession.

People who can code in the world of technology companies are a dime a dozen and get no respect. People who can code in biology, medicine, government, sociology, physics, history, and mathematics are respected and can do amazing things to advance those disciplines.

Of course, all of this advice is pointless. If you liked learning to write software with this book, you should try to use it to improve your life any way you can. Go out and explore this weird wonderful new intellectual pursuit that barely anyone in the last 50 years has been able to explore. Might as well enjoy it while you can.

Finally, I'll say that learning to create software changes you and makes you different. Not better or worse, just different. You may find that people treat you harshly because you can create software, maybe using words like "nerd". Maybe you'll find that because you can dissect their logic that they hate arguing with you. You may even find that simply knowing how a computer works makes you annoying and weird to them.

To this I have just one piece of advice: they can go to hell. The world needs more weird people who know how things work and who love to figure it all out. When they treat you like this, just remember that this is your journey, not theirs. Being different is not a crime, and people who tell you it is are just jealous that you've picked up a skill they never in their wildest dreams could acquire.

You can code. They cannot. That is pretty damn cool.

Most times its really idiots that come up with such requirements. The sad part is that they are also incapable of meeting up with the requirements or able to program. To make matters worse, they aren't ready to pay well for such experience.

Well after suffering a terrible case of heart break and moving on, you'd learn some some bad lessons, put in place certain measures to ensure you're not vulnerable again and coupled with success in one's career (more $$$), the thought of chasing after a woman really stinks! Time could be spent doing some other constructive things instead of playing a dumb game of deception.
How much more self the women do the chasing theses days and its all about the money and seriously I ain't gonna be suckered

Nigerians wouldn't shout rapture because they know that no man knows the hour or the time. But however I could be wrong and underestimating the ingenuity of complete fools.

ezme:

sir, i'm a Christian but I don't practice it like most of you do. The fact someone thinks a picture is satanic and demonic makes the person a Christian, such doctrines abound in most modern day churches (especially here in Nigeria). Demonic cartoons, demonic hair extensions, demonic music videos, demonic hairstyles, etc

When you express fear after seeing a picture, the right adjective to use is "scary" not "satanic" or "demonic"

And for the paranoid , this picture has a cryptic message

I even once tried to lure her for a genotype test but it didn't work out eventually. I want to learn from your own experiences;

how did you ask for your lover's genotype?

Have you ever seen someone having a sickle cell attack before? I saw one once and the picture is ever fresh in my mind. I don't waste time asking for such info like genotype. it's hard wired into me to ask a "lady of interest" her genotype. If she doesn't know, its no big deal I'd gladly take her to the hospital to find out and while we are at that, an HIV test also would be done!

The summary of what I've learnt overtime programming and trying to design error free systems and software is summarized below

"A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."
