One has to be cautious when judging youth team players because you never can tell which of them will lose motivation after that first big contract e.g Macheda, Januzaj or which one will have off the field issues e.g Ravel Morrison.
Having said that Greenwood is the best player in the academy/reserves system. Better than Chong and much better than Gomes. I would rate them in descending order Greenwood, Chong, Gomes.
On redcafe the day before Mourinho was sacked someone said his dream was for Mourinho to be sacked before Greenwood made his debut, so as to prevent Mourinho from wrecking his career. I suspect it was Ed Woodward in disguise, lol.
elampiro: Did I argue that Manchester United players were better than Manchester City players?
I argued from day one that our players were mixed with inexperienced players and not good enough players.
But there were many who were posting such comments that our team was better than a City team that won the league a year earlier, finished in the semi final of the UCL. I told them we didn’t have the likes of Aguero, Fernadinho, Silva, De Bruyne, Kompany, Sterling to build upon. They were relying on the highly inexperienced Rashford, Martial, etc
Those guys were fans of other clubs. I can’t recall any United fan saying that this squad was better than City’s squad. If you have evidence of such you can post it.
Mourinho met poor players and bought poorer players. The United train was on a fast track to nowhere and Mourinho has created a squad with too many mediocre players.
Why do you think people are clamouring for a DoF if not to improve the quality of the squad?
We need a DoF with connections who knows how to identify and go for the right players to suit the style of football Old Trafford is used to.
The manager that will be coming in June should at least be involved in identifying the kind of players he wants and the club should start setting the stage from January.
Wenger did this before he joined Arsenal in 1996 and Pep usually does the same thing too.
elampiro: As for me, it is not every club you go to as a coach and say you want to buy your kind of players. I gave never seen anyone gone to Barca, Madrid, Bayern Munich in the last 8 or more years and said he wants to buy his kind of players.
Manchester City as at the level currently. Liverpool is almost there. Manchester United was like that with squad 2008.
Anyway, my own is a prayer for the new coach to succeed without many excuses. Since Moyes, it has been "I am rebuilding"
Is Mourinho exempt from this your new rule?
It is not every club you go to and buy your type of players but when your man was spending half a billion Euro looking for his type of players you didn’t complain, actually you were criticizing the board for not supporting him enough.
So Mourinho could not use the players left by Van Gaal but the incoming manager must use the players left by Mourinho.
sleekdot: I am not a Man Utd fan but if I were my tactic will be to
1. Get a caretaker like Ole. No expectation just manage the team. 2. Do whatever you want with the team just start removing the toxic nature of the dressing room. Make the players happy and enjoy football 3. Top 4 is a mirage at this point and forget CL, If possible avoid top 6 sef so you don't have to deal with Europa 4. Appoint a Sporting director first, 5. By February make underground contact with Poch or any coach you intend to sign. 6. Get a secret commitment that will not upset the current club(if employed) 7. Get a list of all players he wants the first choice to 3rd choice for each position he wants, 8. Hand over to the Sporting director who starts negotiations. 9. Season ends May 20. Annouce your new coach 10. Transfer window open June 1, annouce 3 new signings in the first week 11. Conclude all transfers by mid June 12. Take the new team and coach to a 1month intensive camp free from needless friendlies and media 13. Play a few friendlies before the season 14. Start the season
I can’t fault this approach. Ole’s appointment is mainly to lift the mood in the squad and erase the gloom that Mourinho brought. The only result based expectations for Ole are 1) play attacking football 2) don’t get us relegated
engrelvis: lol ..... but honestly I don't think ole can manage man utd.i know is temporary but I just v d gut feeling we r going to lament very soon.
Top 4 was gone for this season. The Ole signing is just to try and return to attractive and attacking football for the rest of the season until a permanent appointment at the end.
As long as he plays atttacking football and we don’t drift towards relegation he would have done what he was brought in to do.
You should not ask for money first in a life threatening emergency.
It is either you commence full treatment while the family organizes payment OR you tell them you can’t treat and refer them to a PUBLIC hospital AFTER giving first aid.
What you should not do is sit there looking at a fellow human being bleed out and take his last breath while you are waiting for alert.
You can wait for alert in non life threatening cases, but waiting for alert when the patient is likely do die in minutes or hours is incredibly heartless.
Lana1: Lukaku is not fat na. His body size is due to all those extra muscles. And unlike fat, u no fit shed muscles. I'm afraid that's how he's going to be
You can actually shed muscles. All he needs is a good dietitian and sports physiologist.
Klopp and Liverpool are identifying players that are cheap and are able to play an attractive style of football while Mourinho has spent millions on millions on expensive flops who have all struggled or failed in one way or the other.
If we can't blame JM for the struggles of Pogba, Lukaku, Sanchez, Fred, Bailly, Lindelof e.t.c who should we blame?
We have a dead right wing and in the period Jose Mourinho has been here Liverpool has bought Salah for 37m and Xaqiri for 13m and JM is paying Sanchez a king's ransom to stunt the growth of Martial and stink up the LW.
Liverpool spent 52m on a pacy technical midfielder like Keita and we spent 50m on Fred who can't even get into the match day squad.
JM bought a suspect Bailly and corrected it by buying another suspect Lindelof but still wants to spend more money on CBs.
Robertson who was dealing with us last night cost 8m. Trent ALexander Arnold and Joe Gomez were from the youth team.
I can't really name any United player who has improved under JM apart from maybe Jesse Lingard. ALL the players with real talent have regressed, ALL OF THEM.
In the words of Elampiro and Diadem, if anybody is still supporting JM...... "dem no know ball. yeye"
There is nothing wrong with this formation and the line up. What will determine how well we play is how the team sets up on the field, i.e park the bus vs lightning fast counterattack.
Kimbeast: I can't imagine Xavi being able to replicate the same thing at Madrid or teams with different styles (other than Spain/Barca). Modric kind of has more in terms of ability. Just my opinion
Xavi WAS the system. Immediately Xavi was given the keys to the kingdom he took control at club and national team level.
That is why the MSN Barca did not have the kind of game control and domination of peak Xavi Barca.
Main thing is in terms of midfield control which is the number 1 duty of a CM Modric is no where near Xavi.
Finally even if your assumption is right, more versatile is not the same as better.
Even me that fasted and prayed for many years for Man Utd to buy Modric will not try and compare him to Xavi.
Xavi's level of midfield control was almost spiritual. There are some Xavi stats that seem unreal.
There was a champions league SEASON in which Xavi averaged over 120 passes per game with over 95% pass accuracy. If somebody is passing the ball that many times in a game with that level of accuracy how does the opposition get hold of the ball?
Modric is a better runner with the ball but in terms of ball retention and game control which is most important for CMs Xavi is a god.
Injuries will wreck any footballer’s career or at least change the trajectory, especially if it happens in your formative years.
Jones will never achieve his potential. All those recurrent injuries stalled his development and over the last couple of years he has actually regressed.
Talent wise he and Smalling are not mates but Smalling has served us better over time largely due to availability.
