I was shocked when some tweets suggested that the voting was rigged in her favour but I think they don’t know her and they don’t know that Burna Boy even sampled Angelique on “Anybody”.

ThIs category does not consider popularity and record sales, but technical proficiency. This means even Bokanté and Metropole Orkest would be considered ahead of Burna cos really I don’t know any other orchestra as technically crazy as those guys. Winners of this category have something in common: originality. Sampling is good for club bangers and street music but not good enough to win this award.

Anyway, getting a nomination in the first place is a big deal so he may well be on his way.

Angelique is ahead of Burna. That is a fact. But many Nigerians are not particularly objective when it comes to awards. Perhaps they judged this in his favour because he won a BET award. How many people took the time to listen to the music of the other nominees? They dismissed them outright, shouting African Giant up and down, when a bigger Giant was on the list. Now they wonder who she really is.


Anyway, the Grammys brought them together with other great musicians in a category and therefore almost on an even keel.

We do not know how the judges voted, but for Burna to be considered a nominee along with Angelique and Bokanté (who featured a multiple Grammy award winning orchestra), I’d say he has done very well for himself, and is up there with those Nigerian musicians with Grammy nominations. Afrobeat seems to be the elixir working for our Grammy nominees these days.
