Cocaine trafficker forces Dubai plane to land in Lagos

Emirates flight EK 262 from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, made an emergency landing in Lagos at the weekend due to the deteriorating health condition of a cocaine trafficker.

Screening by anti-narcotic officials found four passengers, who are currently under interrogation, positive for drug ingestion.

One of the suspects in a critical health condition was immediately hospitalised as doctors battle to save his life, the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday.

The Head, Public Affairs Department of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, quoted the Commander, NDLEA, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, as saying the Emirates flight left Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Dubai but was forced to come to Lagos due to the health condition of a passenger on board who ingested cocaine.

He said, “A passenger complained of severe abdominal pains and later suffered three recurrent seizures, thus necessitating an emergency landing in Lagos. Upon arrival, four passengers tested positive for narcotic ingestion. They are Okeh Desmond, Ezeanya Nnaemeka, Christopher Nonso and Chibusi Promise. All the suspects are under observation.”

The Chairman/Chief Executive, NDLEA, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd.), said the suspect was responding to treatment, while calling for stiffer penalty against drug trafficking.

Abdallah said the agency needed the cooperation of all stakeholders to send a warning to drug trafficking organisations.

The House of Representatives doused tension on Friday after a bill to expand the jurisdiction of the Sharia Court of Appeal ignited fears that lawmakers were about to expand Sharia Law to cover the entire country.

The constitution amendment bill, which was sponsored by a member from Sokoto State, Mr. Abdullahi Salame, had passed second reading on the floor of the House.

The Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the session, had allowed the bill to scale second reading without debate on the grounds of its “sensitive” nature.

The House had also noted that since it was a constitution amendment bill, it should be referred to the Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review where it would be adequately discussed.

However, the passage of the bill raised fears after the term “jurisdiction” was reportedly misconstrued for expanding Sharia Law to states other than where it currently applies.

In his proposal, Salame sought to amend sections 262 and 277 of the 1999 Constitution to add “criminal” to the existing provisions.

Explaining the purpose of the bill, the Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Leo Ogor, a Christian, allayed fears that it was about expanding Sharia Law to other states.

Rather, he explained that bill merely sought to increase the existing powers of the court to include criminal cases.

Ogor said, “The ‘jurisdiction’ of the court referred to in sections 262 and 277 of the constitution means the powers of the court in states where it already exists, not expanding Sharia to other parts of the country, no.

“The amendment sought to these sections is to add ‘criminal’ to the existing jurisdiction it has on ‘civil litigation.’ That is the jurisdiction that is being expanded, not the expansion of Sharia Law itself.”

On why the bill was not debated, Ogor said, “The matter was not debated because the amendment is a constitutional amendment on a matter that could be better handled by the constitution review committee.

“Debating it on the floor will not resolve it since the Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review will still conduct a public hearing on it.

“Those concerned will be invited to come and give their opinions on how the added powers of the court will affect them and so on.

“Nobody is expanding Sharia to anywhere. Members of the public should not panic over this at all.”

Nigeria's constitution has been amended before - at least twice. It wasn't shrouded in secrecy, neither was any provisional amendment pushed to second reading through the backdoor.

We didn't hear about anyone telling the bills' sponsors 'not to make noise about' it. Each proponent and the entire National Assembly spearheaded the media sensitization and mobilization through due process. No one created an imaginary legislative process different from what is available in the public domain.

Until you and 'Dogara' brought your excellent 'comprehensive skills' to bear, Nigerians have had to rely on section 9 of the constitution (plus extant legislative rules, processes and procedures) for its amendments.

The sponsor of 'criminal Sharia' bill in Nigeria told the world that Yakubu Dogara advised them to go about it 'secretly' to avoid 'controversy', but neither you nor Dogara has been able to provide the public with a written document or a precedence backing up the 'secret' deal.

Constitutional amendment only came into the talk when it was discovered that some aspects of the bill will conflict constitutional provisions.

This Fayose na real embarrassment. When everybody was putting strategy in place to get funds, he was busy chasing PMB up and down.

Either which way, projects are going on, contractors are getting paid, they too will pay their employees, and employees will spend the money in the state, keeping the state economy rolling.

He better go and settle down in Ekiti and brainstorm on the way out of the state economic problems.

This Fayose has put all PDP's issue on his own head, ignoring governance at his home state. Now the state is on the edge, monthly allocation has gone below 1billion, wage bill is above 1billion, state budget is about 60billion. How on earth will he be able to achieve anything if allocations in the state continues below the 1billion naira mark. Despite all his dictatorial tendencies in shoring up the state IGR, the IGR has refused to deliver something encouraging.

He better leave politics for now and go and sit his ass down in his state and create solutions.
He is taking the love Ekiti people have for him for granted, he seems to have forgotten that Ekiti people can be very loyal, but once they turn against you, it is usually very difficult to re-win their loyalty.

One irony about Fayose that a number of his supporters outside the state do not know, is that Fayose is even more dictatorial than Buhari. If someone like him should become a president, there will be serious consistent confusion, riots and daily protests.

Not all bills that comes to the House is debated by the entire House right away. They refer them to a committee who will assess it whether it is worth presenting to the whole House for debate.

If no, they throw it into a cupboard somewhere.

If yes, they present it for debate by the entire House.

Public hearing is part of the later stages, after the merit of the bill has been established.

It is a bill about already existing Sharia court of appeal. And not just sharia bill.

Sentiments seems to be clouding people's judgement.

3. Any bill that will include changes to the constitution must go through all the State Houses of Assembly.

4. The Bill also has to be passed by the Senate, which has equal representation across the states of the federation. E.g. A small Ekiti/Bayelsa has same number of senators with big Lagos/Kano.

5. The content of the said bill is the most important thing and this media outlet purposely left that one out in order to sensationalize the news.

6.Another way the writer purposely sensationalized the report is in the title. Instead of saying "The bill is about the Sharia Court of Appeal" cunningly said "Pro-Sharia Bill".


Our media outlets need to exercise a high level of professionalism at this time, otherwise they will soon cause a big kasala.

As for those who promote secession, that is a clear violation or rule 9 and using alternate handles violation of rule 19 and actions. Are taking against such handles.

Court jails man 14 years for importing cocaine

A Federal High ‎in Abuja on Thursday sentenced a man, Mr. Anthony Chidi Ikeaba to a 14 years imprisonment for importing 1.782 kg of cocaine into the country.

Delivering judgment in the case numbered, FHC/ABJ/CR/962016, Justice Okon Abang passed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the one count of importation of the prohibited substance.

The National Drug Laws and Enforcement had ‎arrested Ikeaba with cocaine at the Arrival Hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on April 20, 2016.

The convict was arrested on his arrival from the Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

The anti-narcotic drug agency on April 26, preferred against the convict, one count of importation of cocaine, an offence said to be contrary to and punishable under section 11(a) of the NDLEA Act.

‎During the review of fact of the case by the prosecution on Thursday, Ikeadi pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

Justice Abang ruled that the sentence would take effect from ‎the date of the convict’s arrest on April 20, 2016.

The problem is not the exchange rate.

The main problem is that we simply don't have enough dollars to cater for every need.

We don't get dollars for free. We earn it!

And the major source of earning dollar is through export of crude. The price we sell this crude has seriously been reduced. Which means, we earn far less than what we earn before.

The reason the issue is biting hard at Nigeria is also simply because we import virtually everything we consume!

The way forward is also simply to prioritise what we import with the meagre resources available to us.

Floating the naira or otherwise, the issue will still persist. We simply don't have enough dollars to go round.

The meagre dollars available to us will be directed at critical areas of the economy at the CBN rate.

Other non-critical imports should source their dollars at the parallel market.

It's a technical devaluation for non-essential imports.

This may be a good idea only on the mid-term while we speedily try and reduce our over reliance on imported goods.
