A soldier in Benisheik said they could not stand the superior fire power of Boko Haram.

"The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, also disclosed that a key commander of the insurgents, one Abba Goroma was also killed.

Attahiru described Goroma as a high value target, on whose head had been placed a N10-million bounty.

“A chief insurgent commander, Abba Goroma, was killed. If you recall, he had a N10-million bounty placed on his head. He is a high value target of the terrorist organisation,” he said.

On the high casualty figures recorded by its soldiers, he said the online reports were grossly exaggerated and should be discountenanced.

“I advise you to discountenance that report. I want to tell you that that report is not true. Yes, there was an encounter between us and members of Boko Haram insurgents but the casualties you read must be discountenanced,” he said.

The army spokesman, however, did admit that there was fierce fight between the troops of 81 Battalion from the new 7 Division of the Nigerian Army and members of Boko Haram on September 12, but insisted it was the insurgents that sustained the high casualties.

He said despite the spirited resistance by the terrorist group, the troops of the Nigerian Army were able to dislodge them from their Kafiya Forest camp bases, which he added was one of their remaining safe havens.

Brigadier General Attahiru said: “There was an encounter between us and the insurgents at Kafiya Forest. On September 12, 2013, troops of the 81 Battalion, under the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, carried out a deliberate attack by assaulting the enemy camp, the insurgents’ camp, at Kafiya Forest.

“The battle was very fierce and it lasted for several hours. The enemy camp was well fortified with anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons mounted on vehicles.

“At the end of the fire-fight, over 150 insurgents were killed and the enemy or insurgent camps cleared. We lost an officer and 15 soldiers killed in action, while nine soldiers are missing.”

The bush war was never easy. Nigeria has never fought a war like the bush war. A war of tanks to artillery. The Bush war allowed South Africa to develop systems fitted for the African battle space. This is the reason why SAAF asked SAAB to "South Africanise" the Gripen a bit. It is the same reason why the Badger Vehicle will be built in SA with Denel weapons and LMT armour. Nigeria buys any systems it thinks will operate well in Africa. I once said this before that a mine fields can stop the 150 000 strong Nigerian forces. Giving time for another country to call up reserves,armed them and head straight to the front lines to meet the enemy. Or bring up to operational standards some non-operational systems like tanks and armoured fighting vehicle.

land mines CANNOT stop nigerian army, we have hundreds of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, and we are manufacturing about 3 different types in nigeria so soon we will have thousands of MRAPS.

First 1. Egypt will always be ranked below South Africa,Ethiopia and Nigeria. Because they have never proved them selves in the battlefield. Equipment won't raise their rank,because they had superior equipment during the Yim Koppur war like the T-62(with night vision capabilities,Israel centurion tank crews had to use NVG to find targets during the night),portable anti aircraft missiles and anti tank missiles(like the deadly wire guided Sagger missile). the last war between Egypt and Israel ended in a draw/stalemate/no winner....but Egypt had the upper hand and almost defeated Israel until peace was negotiated....that is war history lesson for you.

today, Egypt has 400 F-16 jet fighters/Apache helicopter gunships, about 1.5 million soldiers, about 30,000 tanks/amoured vehicles/artillery, about 20,000 anti-tank/anti-aircraft missiles.

Fighter Pilot: Have you ever heard about urban warfare? It is even more complex than bush and jungle warfare because of its required close contact with the enermy. There are many soldiers who have been in the force for many years and quite a large portion had never undergone rigorous training in urban warfare because it is a specialised training. Military is not required to spray shoot around since there are many civilians loitering around. It poses a real challenge than a war on an open veld.

Yes and if the brits had run the battle they would have recied CAS and a blocking force (could even be Attack choppers) would have coverd the escape rout.

If you know the enemy will break and flee then sending in 100 solders with no means to chase down escaping rebels and no blocking force is bad planing.

you never use air attack on a jungle battlefield where there is close contact hand to hand fire-fight between both sides or else you will kill your own soldiers by friendly fire.

i have told you many times in this forum, jungle warfare....you dont see human beings from the air, so artillery and jets or helicopters will not see the target, they will just kill whatever they think is moving, including their own men.

there is something called ground operation 'surgical strike' in warfare. most of the boko haram were killed...about 50%....good enough for a jungle battle. nigeria lost 10% despite being outnumbered and boko haram was very much more familiar with that jungle terrain and will have secret escape routes and hiding places....caves and holes in the ground or mountains.

okay i will forgive your errors because you are a navy man...the ocean is an open 'field' in combat. jungle is closed up tight.

Fighter Pilot: The Kenyan situation can never be ruled out to be one of the toughest to deal with since it has to do much with hostage taking. There is nothing so difficult to deal with terrorists who are taking in hostages and in most cases it requires forces who are highly trained in that expertise. It is very different when the enermy challenges you on an open battlefield where there are no any lives of hostages at stake.

the hostage thing is just crap and excuses. the kenyan army has not saved most of the civilians, i have watched over 20 videos of the situation, 90% of the people in the mall ran away and escaped before the army came.

the hostages are getting killed....about 70 civilians dead, the kenyan army is NOT saving them.

the terrorists are NOT negotiating with the government. so its every man for himself.

i saw videos of 20 kenyan soldiers who heard gunshots and ran for cover, i guess they should have stormed the place like the Israelis do.

Why did you only send in 100? You have complete control of the skies, satellites and air recone. You know how many BH fighters there are and if they still send in 100 that is one major screw up. 100 can not form a perimeter and destroy the enemy. If they only sent in 100(were do you get that by the way) then the high command really screwed up. Typical when fighting a entrenched enemy you need to out number them 3 to 1 but in this case at least match them.

the most effective recce in jungle warfare is the foot soldier. america has control of skies on vietnam, yet the US army gets killed like chicken inside the jungle by vietnamese soldiers.

100 special forces is a commando operation i expect you to know that. boko haram was already gone into hiding in the deepest jungles and mountains, if you launch air strike, you will alert them, they will relocate and you will never catch them.

the british commando doctrine of 'stealth' on foot is the only way to reach boko haram without giving them much notice/time, or else they keep on evading and avoiding contact/battle for ever.

boko haram is NOT interested in direct combat with nigerian army because they know they will be wiped out 100%....only a company or less of commandoes can reach the edge of a boko haram base before they run too far.

this is battlefield tactics, not a text book stuff.

They seccuerd a perimter containg them in the mall. They have no cleard the first 2 levels of the mall and blocked them in the 3rd. They have captured 10 terrorists for intergastion and they trying to rescue the remaing hostages so that limts what they can do.

The fact is the US waist money take the Stryker ICV a base model costs 6million USD where a ratel built right now costs 750.000 and a ikwlela costs around 1milion(load out depending)

Base line stryker ICV, 7.62mm armor protection, 12.7mm gun and a tier endurance of 500miles ratel 12.7m protection, 20mm gun and 600mile+ fuel endurance.

So just because America spends lots of money does not mean they spend it well

...same with south africa....chinese modern stealth warship well equipped with longer range missiles for $250 million will do a better missile combat than the german valour frigate of $400 million

@andrewza and @fighter pilot, the two south african military men on this forum are very lucky, i have always thought of them as now far better informed about real war tactics (especially the use of heavy equipments) than many officers senior to them. the two guys can get promotion and honours if they spill out what they have learned from almost 800 pages on this forum in the ears of their military bosses in south africa
