lmao me I know one egbon like this. Living large in naija. At a single sitting he would destroy 200 thousand naira eating fresh fish pepper soup and drinking wine . Every night oo. So just his enjoyment money was like 1.4 million naira a week. He is always trying to take me along but I alwAys dodge him. One of the advice I got was never hang out with people like this or you will go broke trying to keep up. So I always avoid his requests. He is one of the managers at sterling bank. Doing very well. 2 children. Na so one day the guy wassap me that he has japa to Canada shocked well few weeks and months after that baba done turn to bob Marley and the wailers ooo. Always wailing about being a security guard and they have him walking with a dog and a torchlight on 12 hour shifts. Hand done touch baba well well. He is full of regrets but he has sold everything and given up his job in naija. He says he has given up his life now that he is just living for his kids now. He went there with wife and kids
Wow spending 1.4mil weekly on enjoyment lol. We all know where that income is coming from 😆. Someone in that position that does japa, will definitely struggle because their lifestyle is built on “runs” income. If the income was “legitimate” then they will have no issues translating it to the new environment..Such a person is struggling not because of japa, rather they are struggling because japa forced them to live on their true income..

This is really sad. He only thought of himself alone. In my opinion, he didn't think of the good education and life opportunities the children could get. In the long run, the children would despise him and this gra gra ends when the children turns 18, he wouldn't have the legal binding on them again and boom she can sponsor them since I read that you can now sponsor your ward of 21/22 years of age ( can't say precisely) and they may cut contact with him. People like this were probably missing in action when it comes to taking care of the kids. She may have been the only one taking care of them both financially and physically but he knows he has a legal power and he used it. As for the woman, she didn't get proper guidance. In her case, she should have tried to get full custody of the kids, that's what is usually advised for single parent instead she went to forge documents. She went about this the wrong way. I hope they all find peace.
You have a good point. However this is only one side of the story. Ask yourself how this would have played out if the gender roles were reversed ie the man took the kids to Canada without the lady’s consent or better put, the lady decided to withdraw her consent at some point in the process. The man would probably be termed a kidnapper and in this social media age probably loose his income source and be deported from Canada( as a result of the backlash from social media). Media would be awash with stories of how an African man tried to seize the children. I am not trying to turn this into a gender war. My whole point is do not rush to judgement. The man has taken a decision based on the information he has and no one not in his shoes has the moral right to second guess his decision. I am in no way supporting what the man has done, I am also not condemning his decision as he alone knows why he did it.

Madam just imagine what you would be happening to you at this very moment if that guy had for any reason lost grip and fallen off the car as you were driving and you crushed him with you car.
Let me try and explain the sequence of events that would enfold
1. You suddenly realize that you have killed a person because of an issue that could have been settled in some other way.
2. Hopefully and for your sake the Nigerian police gets involved immediately ( you do not want the alternative which would involve agbero and tyre around your neck).
3. You have a serious police matter on your neck which in the very best scenario would cost you 1000 times more to settle than what you would have spent on the guy.
4. You successfully settle police but then you will realise that your life has changed forever because you have killed a man.

Always take a moment to think before you do anything and most importantly don’t act when you are angry.

In Nigeria, men are kings because the law favours you all, In the abroad, equality is king, and our women use it to their advantage.

The problem you guys have with wives from naija who went to the abroad is your failure to lord over her as it was in naija, y'all still want a lady of servitude who will abide by your rules and wishes cos of what you're used to forgetting obodo oyibo nor send you

It's simple, when you bring your wife over there, just know it is no longer a master slave norm but an equality, relinquish your right as being the head, you'll live your life peacefully,

I have peeps over there, and they're doing just fine.
Thank you for this. Equality should mean mean equality in expenses and responsibilities. Our women expect to be treated equally while not taking an equal share of the expenses and responsibilities. Equality cannot be defined differently due to gender.

Irrespective of status and need, if anybody gives my child an inappropriate gift ( I determine what is appropriate for my child) I will send it back to that person immediately. It has nothing to do with affordability of the gift. In this case I agree with the OP that the gift was inappropriate and should be sent back
Sagay212:

It's not show off or madness. The children already have enough educational materials. Like I said earlier, it wouldn't be a school for poor or average people. And even if you think it's madness, then you apply common sense. It is extreme madness and mad disrespectful to return a gift. What reason do you give for rejecting and returning the gift. If you don't want it, gift it to someone else. If you believe the gift is juju as you crazy nigerians always do,why not dash it out and buy another game for your child. It makes no sense returning a gift. Just phucking throw it away if you don't want.
Some of you will acquire all the education in the world but wont learn common sense.

I really cannot believe that people are actually supporting her. If she had tried this in Yankee we for don attend her funeral already.
Just goes to show the level of lawlessness in our country.
And to imagine that FRSC actually punished the officers. This is unbelieveable.
In any sane environment the woman would have been doing social distancing and isolation in Kirikiri while awaiting trial for attempted murder of a law enforcement official by now.

There was no where it said I didn't qualify. I have read the requirements over and over again. Besides they specifically created a way for ppl in this situation to apply. But if it comes to paying back, no problem. These are uncertain times, nobody knows the way this pandemic will affect things. It's better to have money at hand.
My point exactly sir. However as per your eligibility I am no CRA official but based on what I read on their site it is only people who lost their jobs or had reduced working hours as a direct consequence of COVID-19 that are eligible. It does not say people who could not find a job due to COVID-19 are eligible. But like I said this is only my opinion and should be taken as such. I am also of the opinion that when one is not sure if he is eligible then he should apply anyway since the worst case is to pay back without interest.

Boss you may have to pay back eventually but I hear it is interest free and also possible to make payment arrangement.

CRA at a later date reviews tax returns filed. Most are straight forward e.g. T4s already submitted directly by employer to CRA, T5s already submitted directly to CRA by financial institutions, T4As submitted directly to CRA by Students loans etc. These slam dunk returns are hardly reassessed.

However there are some scenarios where returns are reassessed. e.g.

Case 1
Sometimes, you forget to report an earning or expense, so you can trigger the reassessment yourself by applying for a T1 adjustment or amendment.

Case 2
There are situations where the CRA can't tell if you are being honest with your submissions e.g. donations (religious donations inclusive), professional membership association (if not reported already on T4), childcare fees, self employment expenses etc.

After review, they may likely send you an email or a post to submit documents (proof to back up your claim). If you don't send it in within a time period (30 days I think), your tax return would be reassessed and adjusted accordingly. This would mean you end up owing or due for more refund. Most times it's the former.

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/campaigns/income-tax-review.html

https://taxsolutionscanada.com/cra-notice-of-reassessment/
There are some claims that are magnets for attracting reassessments. Examples are tuition, medical expenses, moving expenses, union dues, child care expenses and other employment expenses. Basically any claim that needs documentation will likely trigger a review.
For this CERB thing i read that it is new to even CRA. But what I hear is that they are not trying to ensure compliance at this time rather the aim is to get money into hands as quickly as possible.
Also I think even if you have to pay back CERB it will be interest free and no late payment penalties.
So my way of seeing it is that if someone needs the money badly at this time even if you don’t qualify, apply as it is a good way to get 2k per month interest free provided you know that you will pay back when things are better for you. Also you can always make payment arrangement where you will be paying 100 a month. This is strictly my opinion though.

Please does anyone know if it is possible to get Passport in Nigeria without physically being there (finger prints and such would be scanned sent)?

This might sound silly but after almost 2 months of waiting and the deadline drawing near. I need suggestions please.

Or does anyone have any contacts/connections for passport in the US.

Please help!
It is impossible. You need to be there for capturing and biometrics ( finger print etc) at least. Anybody that tells you they can scan your finger prints for international passport is a scammer .

Thank you very much. Very clear explanation. So the gist I'm getting is that during that period I'm on class 7, I can use my international drivers permit to drive unaccompanied.

However I saw on Albertas website that one has to submit ALL prior licences including the international permit. Will do some more research today.
There is some misunderstanding. You are not allowed to have 2 drivers licenses at any time. You have to submit all prior licenses.
When you are on class 7 you cannot drive unaccompanied under any circumstances.
The international drivers permit is not a drivers license.
My whole point is that you need to be aware that you cannot drive unaccompanied when you are on class 7.

Dear Calgarians,

Please would it be possible for me to take my knowledge test, and full Class 5 test within a month of arrival?

Plan is to take knowledge test like in the first week, then acclimatise a bit, take some classes and take the road test in like my 4th week. I'm already preparing for the knowledge test.

Only challenge is that I'm seeing requirements to register for the tests are two government issued IDs... Is there any way to have two Canadian IDs in less than a month or am I misinterpreting this requirement?

Secondly, I've read here (I think vcole mentioned) that one can drive for 90 days without Alberta Drivers Licence. My question is, during these 90 days is my Nigerian licence valid or it has to be backed by an International Drivers Licence?

Thanks in advance for your contributions.
Anything is possible. It all depends on your situation.
1. You can use the authentic Nigerian license for 90 days. You do not necessarily need to have an international driving license as the Nigerian license is in English, but I would advice that you have it as well.
2. You can take the theory test immediately and when you pass you can get the class 7. You then need to hand in your Nigerian license for checks. This is where it is tricky because during the time when the license is being checked, you will only have the class 7 learners permit. You are not allowed to drive without a fully licensed person in the car on a class 7. I believe it takes a couple of weeks to verify the Nigerian drivers license but I may be wrong. Read this: https://www.alberta.ca/assets/documents/drivers-licence-gdl-exemption.pdf
3. When the Nigeria license is approved you can then take the class 5 basic or class 5 advanced. Note that this depends entirely on the driving record that is transferred from Nigeria. If you have more than 2 years of Nigerian driving experience then you can take the class 5 advanced. When you pass the road test then you get a class 5 license.

I am not sure this process can be finished in a month ( because of the time for verifying the Nigerian license). Also note that you cannot drive legally once you hand in the license for verification, so please plan for a period where you will have only a class 7.

Hope this helps. Note that I am not an expert in this field. Try and do some more research. You can start here https://www.alberta.ca/exchange-non-alberta-licences.aspx

Field operations technician jobs are still fairly okay. You can hit the ground running quicker. its blue collar so you might have to move up north. Edmonton and up.

Getting at least a 4th class power engineering certificate will help. Their are field operator programs as well with level 1 to 3 or 4. cant remember exactly. You might be able to get credits with ABSA or the regulatory bodies for the field operator programs.

Nothing stops you from pursuing your EIT on the side, but you might need to get an engineering job (not tech) to make any sense out of it. And chances of getting a FPO jobs is higher than an engineering in this current markets condition.
@salford
I am new in Canada ( Calgary). I am an engineer with some experience. I am considering getting my PEng from APEGA but don't know how to go about it exactly. Do I go down the EIT route ( I have more than 4 years experience outside Canada in Nigeria) or can I get the PEng directly? Also in the mean time, are there any short courses that I can take to get some Canadian education that will help me to at least get into the market? Your advice is appreciated.

In my opinion I would say you need letters from companies A and B. Also you would probably need a letter of explanation stating that you are outsourced from company A to B. The letter from company A should state that you are employed by them but outsourced to company B where you work as XXXX. The letter from company B should state that you are sourced in from company A and you work as XXXX with duties YYYY.

Landing gist continued...

The flight from Lagos to Addis Ababa was calm and uneventful, inflight entertainment was okay, They served lunch (rice and chicken or beef sauce, salad, bread with drinks of your choice) and dinner ( Macaroni and chicken or fish sauce, salad, bread with drinks of your choice). Drinks were served in between meals. Got to Addis Ababa, but the plane wasn't cleared for landing so we spent some time going round in circles till we were finally cleared to land. Passengers going to Canada were grouped and we got on a bus that took us to the airport, the cold was something else, we were directed to the ethiopian airlines gate where we and our hand luggages were searched , the pregnancy certificate was again requested for and then we headed straight to board the plane. Because of the delayed landing there ways no lay over time, the flight took off not long after for Dublin. This plane was smaller than the first one, the seats were smaller and more closely packed, inflight entertainment was the same as the first flight. Breakfast was served (scrambled eggs and some mede mede, bread and beverage of choice). This didn't go round so some people had to be served rice and sauce and the usual combo, I was in this category but at this point I was tired eating the sane thing over and over again, so I took only the salad and tea. We landed in Dublin for refuelling, cleaning and flight crew change, but we didn't get off the plane. We were in Dublin for about 50mins after which the plane took off for Toronto. This flight was about seven hours, I can't remember the meals served, but the flight was uneventful. We landed at YYZ a few minutes behind schedule, meanwhile we had a connecting flight to catch to Edmonton our final destination. We went through arrivals, there was no queue so we went to the vacant counter, we submitted our declaration form and were asked if we had meat to which I answered no, she then asked if we had any animal products as our bags would be searched. I told her we had a little milk for our twins food. She wrote this on the declaration card and waved us on. We went to complete our landing formalities, there were about five people ahead of us on the queue, I was asked to seat with the kids while hubby remained on the queue. When it got to our turn we submitted our COPR and passports, we gave friend's address, the officer processed it, we were back a copy of the COPR. Since it was a sunday, we couldn't get our SIN done so we proceeded to get our luggage's. We spent about 30mins completing the landing formalities. Went to fetch our bags, paid a potter to carry the bags and moved to the custom section. We submitted the declaration forms and we were waved to the right. Went to the officer at the counter, he asked for the milk I was carrying, I gave him the three small sachets of milk, he asked if we had goods to follow we said foodstuff and clothes worth $5000. He filled the form, gave us a copy and asked us to go. We proceeded to air Canada for our flight to Edmonton, of course by this time we had already missed our flight. We were placed on the next available flight at no extra charge, we had to wait about an hour and 30mins for this flight. The downside of this flight was that we couldn't get seats that were close together, but we got three seats at the back for myself and the twins and two seats for hubby and our daughter a few seats ahead. The flight was four hours long, inflight entertainment was good, but food was for sale. The twins were restless and loud the first hour of the flight, but they later settled down and slept through the flight. We landed in Edmonton at about 4:40pm, we got our from air Canada baggage service office, got a minivan yellow taxi and went to our airbnb apartment. The place was really cool and clean, it had everything. I cooked some indomie noodles with smoked Titus, we ate had our baths and went to bed. It felt strange that the sun was still shinning brightly at 9pm. This is Canada, we don land.

To be continued...
NB : Kids disturbance no let me proof read and edit errors. Going out now, will make corrections later.
Congratulations on your successful landing. One question though, why did you choose to take a flight with 3 stop overs? ie Lagos-Addis Ababa - Dublin-Toronto-Edmonton? Was this not too stressful on yourself (as a pregnant lady) and the kids?

I am not usually an active contributor on this thread. I doff my hat for you guys that contribute regularly here. E no easy.
But we need to be able to separate facts/rules/laws from opinions. I realize that most of what we say here comes from our individual experiences. Everyone must realize that all applications are unique. The only thing similar to all applications is the rules. Applicants must show how they uniquely satisfy the rules.

Guys I assume that there are no Canadian visa officers contributing to this thread ( I may be wrong). So please unless you are stating a rule explicitly, always add a disclaimer so that the person reading your comment realizes that this is just your opinion. Always remember that what happened to Mr A does not automatically happen to Mr B in the same situation.

And to those making decisions based solely on comments from a faceless forum, please just stop it. The data on this thread is priceless but you have to analyze this data before it becomes useful for your own application. Always realize that you are responsible for your application.

I don speak too much grammar today. Abeg make una no chop me raw oo. Na just say I read stuff here wey fit land person for wahala if used wrongly and this na Naija where all man dey find way to circumvent rules.
