One of the victims of last week’s attack by the Yusufiya sect in Borno State has given a shocking account of how the Islamic extremists killed three pastors who were captured along with other victims on the second day of the insurgence. The victim was among those held hostage in Yusuf’s enclave.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun in Maiduguri, the eye witness who preferred anonymity disclosed that the three pastors were beheaded on the instruction of the sect leader, Mohammed Yusuf shortly after bringing them out of his inner chamber.

“The pastors alongside one Ibo man were asked to change their faith to Islam like they did to other people taken as hostages. I think there was an argument by one of the pastors which gave the others some level of confidence to also resist accepting Islam.

“The Yusufiya men who were armed on that Tuesday afternoon were not comfortable with the pastors and they took one of them to the sect leader in his inner chamber. They came out later to the courtyard within the compound and cut their heads one after the other and thereafter, shouted allah akbar in wild celebration accompanied with several gun shots,” the eye witness disclosed.

He said the hostages numbering about 50 within the area of the execution of the pastors and another fair complexioned man which he could not identify, were gripped with fear as non could foretell the outcome of their stay at the enclave of the fundamentalists. He was however lucky to escape as he was freed in the night with others with a warning not to mix with kafrici (infidels).

Corroborating the account of the killing, a Senior pastor with Good News Church, Wulari Maiduguri Rev. Baba Gata Ibrahim told Daily Sun in an interview that a pastor in his church, Pastor George Orjih was beheaded on the instruction of the Boko Haram leader because the clergy man refused to accept Islam.

“An eye witness who was also captured by the Islamic militants gave us details of how the pastor was killed. He told us they were persuading him to accept Islam and he said over his dead body. He was even said to have preached Christ to Mohammed Yusuf and that reportedly angered the sect leader who then as he ordered that the pastor and others be killed immediately,” he disclosed.

The late Pastor George Orjih was said to have arrived Maiduguri last week from Jos where he was doing his Masters programme in Theology. Described as a fearless, hardworking, and intellectually sound, his care for the welfare and well being of his family allegedly contributed to his capture and eventual death.

“He was mindful of his family and their welfare. He was really out of the house but thought to go back again. That was how he was captured by the Boko Haram before he was killed. It was the very week, in fact the following day he returned from school where he was doing his Masters in Theology that he was arrested,” the senior pastor added.

He urged the government to provide adequate security for Christian in the state.

Also delivering a sermon during the funeral rites for late Rev. Sabo Yakubu, slain COCIN Church pastor, the speaker, Rev Bulus Azi urged Christians to emulate the pastors who were killed because of their refusal to betray their faith. Quoting from the bible in Revelation 7: 9-15, the regional chairman of the church told Christians to prepare to die anytime as their calling demand.

Being igbo doesn't mean you can extend tribal insults to igbos. Have you heard of self hating?. About seven people were reportedly kidnapped in the last four days in various parts of Ekiti State.

The kidnappers equally demanded N50 million ransom from the victims’ families and relations before they could be released.

Those kidnapped include the Chairman of the state Internal Revenue Board, Mr. Femi Ajepe, and his wife; the wife of the paramount ruler of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adeyemi Ademileka and her daughter, Adedoyin.

Others are an Ado-Ekiti-based lawyer, Mr. R.K. Olaiya, who was kidnapped along with his wife and a client in Ikole Ekiti yesterday.

Ajepe was said to have been abducted with his wife in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, last Saturday by the kidnappers, who trailed him from Akure, the Ondo State capital, to Ado-Ekiti.

While Ajepe was said to have been released by the kidnappers, his wife was yet to regain her freedom as their captors were said to be demanding N30 million before she could be released.

THISDAY learnt that the wife of the traditional ruler of Ilawe Ekiti was also said to have been released but her daughter, Adedoyin, is still being held at an undisclosed location by the abductors, who were demanding a N10 million ransom.

As at press time yesterday evening, Olaiya, who was said to have been kidnapped along with his wife and client were still being held just as there was no clue about the ransom being demanded by the abductors.

Reacting to the incidents, Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Dele Omotoso, who confirmed the abduction of one of his members to newsmen, said the lawyer was in Ikole Ekiti to meet one of his clients, only to be abducted by the kidnappers, who had already laid siege for him.

According to him, he (Olaiya) was to handle a case for this client in Ado-Ekiti High Court yesterday before the unidentified men descended on him.

On the ransom demanded by the kidnappers, Omotoso said he had not been able to establish any point of contact with the abductees for him to be able to know the ransom the abductors were demanding.

Also commenting on the incidents, the state Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fabian Ojiri, said his command was aware of the incidents, except that of Ajepe, which, he said, had not been reported to him.

He, however, added that most of the recent abduction cases were as a result of mere communal crises.

According to Ojiri, “I can say that most of these abductions were as a result of internal crises in all these communities. Take for instance, immediately the Olori of Alawe and her daughter were abducted, the kidnappers called the DPO in Ekiti South West Local Government Area to come to Ikere to pick her car.

“So, the question now is this, how did they know his number, if not for the fact that it was perpetrated by those in that community?” he asked.

Ojiri referred to the abduction of the lawyer as an arrangee one, saying “How come he was abducted the very day he was to handle a very sensitive case in Ado-Ekiti? So, these are part of the things that we have to put into consideration,” he said.

The Police Commissioner, however, said he had ordered a thorough investigation into the incidents, so that the perpetrators could be brought to book in no distant time.

His words, “I have put my men on alert and by the grace of God, these evil doers will soon be unravelled and make to face the full weight of law, because the security of lives and property of the people have to be paramount and be protected by police with utmost zeal.”

It may sound unbelievable but it is true that some of the beautiful buildings in Dubai and Singapore are owned by Nigerians.

This was revealed by a team of Lagos State officials who recently returned from the Middle East after a two- week manpower development training in the cities.

Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune at the arrival hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Thursday, the General Manager, Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency, (LASIMRA), Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said he was sad to learn that some of the edifices in the cities were owned by Nigerians.

“Our leaders have lost tracks and have taken our money to develop foreign lands, leaving Nigeria to decay everyday,” he said.

As he put it, “Singapore and Dubai, these are people we were better than about 30 years ago. Singapore was able to transform from a third world country to a first world country through dint of hard work and the commitment of the leadership.”

“We went there to see how they did it. Dubai and Singapore are now the destinations of the world and the pride of the Middle East. How come the people of Dubai were able to transform a desert to what it is today? That is what we went there to study, we are loaded and are ready to replicate this in Lagos,” Igbokwe added.

According to him, when compared with Singapore and Dubai, the roads in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole are nothing to write home about, adding “we are very far behind. There are massive constructions everywhere in Dubai; the power there is non-stop. If they take light in Dubai, they may not be able to work because of the heat.”

He stated that Nigeria could not progress unless it is able to solve the problems in the energy sector, adding, “We need power and roads to be able to move. Everywhere in Dubai is air conditioned; even shops for ordinary people are air conditioned. They invest so much in the power sector because that place is hot.”

Singapore
“We have not got there probably because we don’t have that kind of planning and we are not challenged like Singapore. Nothing has challenged us in Nigeria, even the civil war; we learnt nothing from it, which is why we remain like this. I don’t know whether to cry or shed tears. We can replicate what is happening in Dubai and Singapore in Nigeria,” Igbokwe stated.

Corroborating Igbokwe, the Chairman, Lagos State House Committee on Education, Mr. Alawiye King said that Singapore had succeeded because it had invested massively in education.

According to him: “The two weeks I spent in the cities showed how its government had been able to invest so much in human capital and that had transformed into what they are getting today. We have seen massive and aggressive infrastructural renewal in Dubai, we went there to see how they did it in such a short period of time,” he said, adding that he would soon sponsor two bills on the floor of the House on how to move education forward in the state.”

He noted that Singapore operated direct investment which it had transformed into heavy development, calling on the Federal Government to learn from the idea. “We should start and concentrate on massive infrastructural renewal. In the area of power, we should not run away from it, we have to go back to our original master plan.

“Federal Government should as a matter of urgency come to the rescue of Lagos State, because there is the need for it to put in place massive investment in the state as the commercial hub of the country,” he said.

The officials were drawn from the Ministries of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Environment, among others while some others were also drawn from government agencies, such as the Lagos State Infrastructural Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), State Consultancy Board and the Lagos State House of Assembly.
