Career › Uneasy Calm In OAUTCH Over Nursing Uniform Controversy by Amoto94(op): 10:22am On Nov 10, 2018
Unless urgent steps are taken, a major religious crisis may be brewing at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTH) as two top officials of the hospital allegedly humiliated some female nurses for wearing trousers and hijab while on duty.
The Renaissance gathered that the Director of Nursing Mr Victor Onini and the Chief Medical Director Prof. Victor Adebayo Adetiloye, at different times warned the nurses and threatened to sack them if they dear appear in trousers or hijab (Muslim female head covering) again.
The latest harassment occurred on Monday, Oct. 29 when the director of nursing reportedly queried some nurses for putting on trousers, which had always been a part of the nurses’ corporate dressing.
Onini allegedly pushed further by asking the nurses to remove the usual trousers, living them with only the jumpy gowns.
Keen watchers are seeing the development appears to be a calculated attempt to tactically ‘derobe’ the few Muslim nurses in the complex by the duo of the Director of Nursing and the CMD.
It was gathered that the nurses were later chased out of the ward by the CMD, Adetiloye, who warned the affected nurses to stop wearing the trousers or risk being relieved of their duties.
Efforts to reach the nurses concerned to know how they feel about the latest development proved abortive as they have subsequently declined to respond to calls and messages.
A reliable source alleged that the Muslim community has warned that members should not speak to the press on the matter as it was receiving the necessary attention.
However, another competent source in the Complex said the sudden ‘gang-up’ against the trousers and hijab was orchestrated and premeditated by major stakeholders, beyond the Director/HOD Nursing and the CMD.
According to reports, the whole drama started on penultimate Friday when the sectional head attached to the Gynaecology ward saw Nurse Nimot Olaleye and queried why she was putting on trousers.
Also read Six Reasons Why The Nation Editorial On Osun Hijab Saga Must Be Rejected
She replied that it’s one of the options in the circular prescribed by the Nursing Council.
The sectoral head then asked her to go and remove it.
Olaleye reportedly ran to the mosque and told the Imam and a brother she met there to intimate them of her ordeal.
It was, however, learnt that the Imam asked her to comply by removing her trousers and return to her ward.
the Imam told her that he would discuss the matter with other members of the Muslim community to determine the next line of action.
In the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 5, the same Nurse Olaleye was called by the HOD (Director of Nursing) who told her to remove her trousers again.
Feeling embarrassed and confused, Olaleye again went straight to the mosque to inform the Muslim Community.
But the leadership similarly told her to comply and then get back to work while they engage the authorities to resolve the issue.
“After waiting for a while for the return of Olaleye, the HOD went straight to her ward (Gynae ward) where he met another Nurse Aminat Alimi, who also wore trousers.
“This probably made the HOD furious and went back to call the CMD, who collaborated with him to embarrass Nurse Alimi by ordering her to remove her trousers,” a source who witnessed the incident said.
A nurse who witnessed the humiliation but who preferred to speak under the condition of anonymity also narrated her ordeal to The Renaissance .
“Although, I am not a Muslim, what I witnessed was indeed a completely embarrassing situation.
“We were initially surprised when the Director of Nursing asked the Muslim nurses to remove their trousers, leaving them with jumpy gowns.
“You know because they wear trousers, the length of the gown may not necessarily be of major concern, unlike some of us who do not wear the combination of gown and trousers.
“But the most embarrassing aspect of it was when the CMD disgraced and walked the nurses out of the ward in the presence of the patients.
Also read Why We Arrest High Ranking Judges – DSS
“As a nurse myself, I felt disgraced, demeaned and belittled; it is inhuman.
“How can senior colleagues in the hospital do that to a professional colleague?.
“Nurses are professionals and must be respected. More so, what the CMD, Prof Adetiloye did was illegal, unprofessional and wicked.
“After all, the dressing (gown and trousers) are approved by the Nursing Council,” she said.
Another nurse, who witnessed the occasion and pleaded anonymity because she was not authorised to speak to the press, said she could not comprehend why the senior colleagues who are supposed to be the custodians of the rules and regulations guiding the nursing profession turned out to be the very ones working against them.
“It is in our Code of Conduct that we can put on trousers and the nurse gown but we were surprised when we heard nurses were called by the HOD to see him in the office and when they got to his office, he ordered them to remove their trousers or else, they will be fired,” she said.
The nurse explained that the mode of dressing was backed by the policy of the Nursing Council of Nigeria, which states that nurses could wear either a nurse cap or a shoulder-length hijab with trousers.
She expressed surprise that the Director of Nursing insisted that, nurses are only permitted to wear a gown and a small hijab while trousers are outlawed.
Nursing & Midwifery Council circular
Interestingly, the stance of the two principal officers contravenes the provisions of a circular from the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria to the hospital authorities signed by the Secretary-General, P.N Ndatsu, sent to all the Directors of Nursing, their Deputies, the Chief Medical Directors, Chief Executives and Principal, dated Feb. 11, 2002 with reference number N&MCN/CMF/721/1/3.
Section 2, subsection b(III) of the circular further, prescribes that the nurses are permitted to wear trousers and a gown with long sleeves.
Also read Crisis looms as FUTA MSSN Amir allegedly disrupts Ramadan programme outside campus
But when confronted with the circular, the HOD insisted that she would not join issues with the press to create mistrust in the system, this is misinformation.
“There is a uniform policy in OAUTHC, handed down by the uniform committee and Muslim community cannot micromanage the department of nursing for us.
“The uniform in use is a product of collective bargaining since 2014, period,” Onini said.
Meanwhile, in a frantic effort to resolve the crisis, the management of OAUTHC had conveyed a meeting with the Muslim community and the leadership of the Nursing Department and other stakeholders.
Report has it that, while both parties agreed to sheath their swords, the nurses are still denied their rights and this situation will remain until few days time when another meeting will be held with the necessary stakeholders at the instance of the Director.
The meeting is expected to finally resolve the issue.
Until then, the female nurses are to obey the HOD’s order.
When contacted, the Chairman, OAUTCH, Prof Fatihu Arogundade said the institution has agreed to settle the issue amicably as a family affair.
Arogundade assured that going by the progress made so far, there should be no cause for alarm.
However, there are feelers that top members of the Muslim Community aren’t ready to compromise their constitutionally guaranteed rights and are spoiling for a real showdown, should the authorities decide to mitigate their rights and privileges.
A member of the Muslim Community said, if the nursing dress code is guaranteed in the constitution, approved by the Nursing Council and has been in practice for three years, no one should attempt to violate such right or infringe on such freedom.

Foreign Affairs › Xenophobia And Party Politics In South Africa by Amoto94(op): 7:08am On Nov 02, 2018
With the campaigning for the 2019 national elections gripping South African politics, all kinds of xenophobic statements are uttered by most political parties who see anti-immigrant, xenophobic and Afrophobic rhetoric as a way to attract votes. Through blatant lies, othering and scaremongering, foreigners are blamed for many of South Africa’s woes and social ills. All political parties are guilty.
In a society where violence against foreign nationals is pervasive and xenophobic sentiments are common, irresponsible leaders continue to manufacture an atmosphere of crisis. Politicians claim that foreigners are flooding South Africa and undermining country’s security, stability and prosperity. Yet, according to the 2011 census, South Africa isn’t overwhelmed with immigrants, with some 2.2 million international migrants (about 4% of the population) in the country in 2011. Stats SA Community Survey 2016 puts the number of foreign born people at 1.6 million, out of the population of 55 million at the time. While there are a number of methodological issues with the Stats SA Community Survey, it would not be surprising if this figure is correct, especially as the Department of Home Affairs has deported close to 400,000 foreign nationals since 2012.
South Africa is one of the most unequal countries in the world. More than half of the population lives in poverty. The inequality and hardships experienced by the majority of South Africans are rooted in the country’s colonial and apartheid racist legacy, as well as the post-1994 failures to transform the economy and society. Yet, listening to many politicians one gets the impression it’s all the immigrants’ fault.
Both the African National Congress-led government and the Democratic Alliance want to build higher fences at the border to prevent foreigners from coming in and undermining South Africa’s socio-economic development and security. Politicians claim that foreigners are the main reason for high crime rates; immigrants are blamed for the hardships experienced by poor South Africans and for overrunning South Africa’s cities.
In 2017, South Africa’s deputy police minister claimed that the city of Johannesburg was taken over by foreigners, with 80% of the city controlled by them. If this is not urgently stopped, he added, the entire country “could be 80% dominated by foreign nationals and the future president of South Africa could be a foreign national.” The mayor of Johannesburg often speaks about “our people” and “those people” (the foreigners) who make South Africa into a “lawless society.” The Economic Freedom Fighters has questioned whether those born outside the country—even the people born abroad to South African parents—can ever be trusted or regarded as “proper South Africans.”
While speaking about their plans to run a coalition government on the national level if they get enough votes in 2019, the Democratic Alliance, COPE and the right-wing Freedom Front Plus promised to place foreigners in camps rather than letting them roam free in South African cities. The African Basic Movement, a newly registered political party, has called for all foreigners to leave South Africa by the end of 2018. The party claims that foreigners plan to take over the country in a few years and thus must be stopped by any means. They also want to make it illegal for foreigners to marry South African citizens.
The Democratic Alliance is approaching the next year’s elections with a new nationalistic slogan “All South Africans First.” As an editorial in the Mail & Guardian recently pointed out, this slogan is “pandering to a sentiment among South Africans that others poor immigrants.” This is nothing but “an attempt to co-opt the nationalism [and anti-immigrant rhetoric] so in vogue in much of the rest of the world right now.”
None of this anti-immigrant rhetoric is based on evidence. The research shows that immigrants don’t steal jobs from South Africans and that foreigners are not responsible for high levels of crime. The majority of foreign nationals also don’t receive any support from the government, such as social grants, and have to fend for themselves for survival. But facts don’t seem to matter in South African politics. Why would politicians choose to face the rightful anger millions of poor and hopeless South Africans when they can revert to anti-immigrant rhetoric and shift blame to those who have no voice, the people who make up between three to four percent of the population?
If, or rather when xenophobic violence explodes and immigrants are beaten, displaced, tortured, killed and/or burned alive, while their property and possessions are looted—as has happened many times in the past—the politicians will say this has nothing to do with xenophobia. It’s just criminality. The politicians will take no responsibility for fueling xenophobic sentiment. Denialism will be the order of the day.
While the opposition parties spout xenophobic rhetoric and bigotry, the African National Congress-led government has already developed and approved anti-poor and anti-African immigration plans. The government sees poor and unskilled African migrants and asylum seekers as threats to country’s security and prosperity. The White Paper on International Migration, approved by the government in March 2017, separates immigrants into “worthy” and “unworthy” individuals. Foreigners who have skills and money are welcome to come to the country and can stay in South Africa permanently. Poor and unskilled immigrants, who are predominantly from the African continent, will be prevented from coming to and staying in South Africa by any means, “even if this is labelled anti-African behavior,” as the former Minister of Home Affairs, Hlengiwe Mkhize, pointed out in June 2017.
The immigration debate in South Africa is framed around whether foreigners can benefit the economy. Separating immigrants into those who can contribute to country’s economy and those who can’t is rooted in racist, white supremacist, classist and ableist thinking. Thus, South Africa’s new immigration policy mirrors the United States, Australia and much of Western Europe. Only the exceptional, privileged, skilled, productive and well-off are welcome. The unworthy, from shithole countries will be denied access.
One of the most controversial aspects of the White Paper on International Migration is the plan to establish asylum seeker processing centers. These centers will be used for detention of asylum seekers while their applications are being processed by the South African authorities. The use of blanket detention to manage international migration would be in breach of the South African Constitution.
South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, recently strongly rejected the proposals to build detention centers for African migrants in North Africa aimed at curbing migration to Europe. Ramaphosa said that this is “akin to creating prisons for the people of our continent and I can’t see how African leaders can accede to that.” Yet, his government plans to follow similar proposals.
It is important to remember that the large majority of those who reject or dislike foreigners in South Africa are anti-black immigrant and Afrophobic. White foreigners and immigrants don’t experience xenophobia in South Africa. It is reserved mainly for poor black foreigners from the African continent.
Xenophobic and Afrophobic bigotry remains the order of the day in the “Rainbow Nation” and is likely to get uglier as the electioneering heats up. We will continue to hear the politicians put the blame on foreign migrants, asylum seekers and refugees for many of the social ills and hardships experienced by the majority of South Africans. One would expect better of the country’s political leadership, but South Africa isn’t there yet.

Islam › Things That Make A Man Happy And Things That Make Him Miserable by Amoto94(op): 6:20am On Jul 14, 2018
Things that make a man happy and things that make him miserable :
A tremendous hadeeth.

Sa’d Ibn Abī Waqqās (I) stated that Allah’s Messenger (z) said :

“There are three things that bring about happiness and three that bring about misery. So from happiness is :

A wife who when you look at her pleases you much; and when you are absent you still trust her with respect to herself and your wealth.

A good easy riding beast that enables you to reach your companions.

A spacious home that has much by way of facilities.

And from misery is :

A wife who when you look at her you see bad; she uses her tongue to speak against you; and when you are absent, you cannot trust her with respect to herself or your wealth.

A difficult and disinclined riding beast; if you whip it, you only tire yourself out and if you leave it alone it will not carry you to your companions.

A narrow and constricted home with very little by way of facilities.”

Shaikh Al-Albānī (V) authenticated this narration in Silsilatul-Ahādīth as-Saheehah no. 1047 as hasan :
It was reported by Al-Hākim (2/162).
Sa’d Ibn Abī Waqqās (I) reported that Allah’s Messenger (z) said :

[arabic-font]أربع من السعادة : المرأة الصالحة ، والمسكن الواسع ، والجار الصالح ، والمركب الهنيء ، وأربع من الشقاوة : الجار السوء ، والمرأة السوء ، والمسكن الضيق ، والمركب السوء

“Four things bring about happiness:

A righteous wife.

A spacious home.

A righteous neighbour.

A good and easy-going riding beast.

Four things bring about misery:

A wicked neighbour.

A wicked wife.

A narrow and constricted home.

A difficult and disinclined riding beast.”

Shaikh Al-Albānī (V) authenticated this narration in Silsilatul-Ahādīth as-Saheehah no. 282:
It was reported by Ibn Hibbān in his Saheeh no. 1232; Ahmad (1/168).

These affairs are as relevant today as they were in the time of Prophethood. Every man with any self-respect would desire a righteous, trustworthy and honorable wife.
A pleasant-looking wife who beautifies herself daily for her husband
(as he does for her too!).

She honors him when he is present and he trusts her completely whilst he is absent with respect to her honour, chastity, and with his wealth and property. She allows none to enter the family home except one whom her husband is pleased with.

A man is pleased with a spacious home with plentiful facilities that give ease and comfort to the family; they show gratitude to Allah for what he has provided them by worshipping Him, remembrance (dhikr) and obedience to Him. The home is the sanctuary of the wife and family, it is a place of tarbiyah for the children, a place a worship for the womenfolk – so the man should make it comfortable, spacious and well-facilated if he able to do so.

A righteous neighbour will protect you, honour you, and hide your faults. He will not encroach on your privacy and he is a doorway for you to attain much reward from Allah. A wicked neighbour by contrast is untrustworthy, you do not feel safe for your wife and family when you are away, so he becomes a source of misery.

A riding beast that is agile and fast, takes you to your destination and to your companions; and does not cause you distress – this is from the things that bring joy to a man. So whilst he is upon his riding beast, he is content and thus busies himself with remembrances, supplications and recitation of Qur’an. This hadeeth also includes other means of travel that Allah has provided such as ships, cars and so on. Allah has stated :

[arabic-font] وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ لِتَجْرِيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ بِأَمْرِهِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْأَنْهَارَ

“…and Allah has subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command

and subjected for you the rivers.” (Ibrahim: 32)

[arabic-font]
وَالْخَيْلَ وَالْبِغَالَ وَالْحَمِيرَ لِتَرْكَبُوهَا وَزِينَة
ً ۚ وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُون
َ

“And He created the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and as adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.” (An-Nahl:cool

So let each person show gratitude to Allah for what He has provided and seek that which will bring him closer to Allah, both in this life and the next. And from the best of affairs in this life is a righteous spouse who will aid one in the worldly and religious affairs.

Islam › Fasting For Shawwal by Amoto94(op): 2:39pm On Jun 16, 2018
* Fasting for Shawwal*

Q: For the women, do they have to replace the fasts that they have missed during the month of Ramadan before they fast the 6 sunnah in the month of Shawwal or can they fast their 6 sunnah and replace the missing fard ones before the next Ramadan starts?
Jazzakum Allahu Khairan

A: wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

The hadeeth that encourages us to fast six days in Shawwaal mentions specifically fasting the month of Ramadhaan and then following that with six days in Shawwaal. Our scholars point out that this is only accomplished by completing the missed days of Ramadhaan and then fasting 6 optionally in Shawwaal, otherwise the person would not be "following" the fast of Ramadhaan with 6 days of Shawwaal, since the fast of Ramadhaan has not yet been completed.

Also, the general principle is to give priority to obligations over recommended deeds. This supports what is above even further. Aboo Bakr as-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, "Verily Allaah does not accept an optional deed until the obligatory one is offered."

Shaykh al-Albaanee mentioned that the one who dies while fasting an optional fast, and he had obligatory fasts to make up but he delayed them, dies in a state of disobedience!

And there is no distinction between men and women in this case.  And Allaah knows best.

Here is a nice resource in Arabic quoting a number of fatwaas of the scholars, all in agreement with the above:
