SA has 177 olphant tanks with 133 belong to the reseve units thus in storage.

correct they based on the centurion chasie but compare the 2 to each other. there is no difrence. And the current olphant tanks are brand new builds not upgrads.

the ratel is being replaced with the badger but even so is still one of the best IFV out there to day and the best in africa.

2 missile attack ships, in use long ago 1979 they are 34 years old, 4 mine-sweepers, in use long ago 1981 they are 32 years old. one of them is named GALESHEWE an old missile warship that is 30 years old already and see the photo posted here below.

if you remove their new 4 ships which are good, all the other warships are too old in service from around 1968 to 1988 and that is about 25 of about 33 ships, and that is over 77% of south african navy warships are long overdue for the museum, yet they keep on over-rating themselves.

Some points

There are 3 strike crafts not 2. The san sit has not been updated yet. All 3 are in a full refit and upgrade that is due to end soon.
The oldest ship in the SAN is protea but if you look at the sytems on that thing you will see she is good at a job and she is all so a survey ship thus not a combat ship and painted white
Draknsberg had a mid life refit not long a go and is a Combat suport ship and not a war ship. She is verry good at her job.
The Yanky harbor patrol boats (Namacurra) are from the 1980s yes but have new engiens and sytems and again are not war ships but small patrol boats(drakenberg can and has carreid them has sea boats)
The mcm ships are obsoliet and relgated to patrol duty ever sense we got a sytem that can turn any ship/boat (even a few of the larger ribs) in to a MCM veseal

you forgot to mention the subs by the way.

Yes a lot of the navy is old but there are funded projects to replace the older ships and the upgrades have all ready been done on all but the strik crafts who will be ready in few months. The upgrade will let us use them for a few more years has patrol boats.


by the way a ship is more than a hull it is the sytems that hull carrys the hull is just a platform. if you have any qustions on the navy feel free to ask.

agaugust: i have not checked the data you wrote about those missiles, i will do that later after i close from work, buy just to tell you that missiles too have versions and upgrades. then in close combat, range will not matter. penetration rate is not a big issue, when missile hit you man, it blows up your armour, and death follows while the hit vehicle becomes disabled and out of action. even an ordinary anti-tank land mine will disable a main battle tank.

Range is a big deal in the open.

penertration is vital to a AGM. If you want to kill Light AFV and infanty yuo do not use a AGMs since they a waist. And some tanks have some heavy armor. I can not get info on the current olphant tank of SA only the the MK1 witch is not much. (that is why i said i would not do a tank comparsin) but for info lets do it on the T72B armour the newest T72. It has armor at at 900mm thick vs heat on it's hull acording to wikkpedia. That means the switturn would only piss him off and that befor we add ERA. A disabled tank can be repared some times with in the same day. Exampil amrica had over 100 m1s knocked in the 2003 invasion of iraq. yet lost all most non of them in the long run.
