Henry240: It's a pre-world war II aircraft. The T-34 still gets the job done, but i don't see anybody using it in 2016. The 50cal is pre war. Still used, Bren gun was still used by the english in to the 80s ans even the 90s with reserve units(still used in india) Canadian rangers are only now looking to replace there pre ww2 rifels. The german MG3 is just a MG42extra extra. It is not time or technology that makes somthing obsolete. It is when it can no longer full fill its role or it is filled by somthing better. The T34 is obsolete because as a Medium tank it part of a dead class since both medium and heavies became Main battle tank. It fails as a light tank because it is not Mobile enough to keep up with the lightly armed light tanks like the amphbouses air drop PT76 and its gun is unable match the less mobile but well armerd Light Tanks. It cant be a MBT because it is a easy prey for a armouerd car the size of a well a car. The sherman was usful far longer because it was able to accept a bigger gun. Mainly the 105mm gun. Thuse the Sherman could kill a T55. The C47well old is still able to fill full a job. Not the Job as the main transport but yeomonary and auxlury jobs that are still needed. |

lionel4power: JESUS!! Are you people this fvking illiterate (no offence) . . hitting a torpedo with another torpedo only happens in hollywood, its not practical and almost impossible... Like hitting a bullet with bullet. Its a fvcking big wide ocean. . .
About the depth charge... under-water explosion is more deadly than over-water... . . The explosion and further shock wave will cause pressure imbalance in the whole area... If the wave effect touches the sub it will tear it apart and the sub will implode. The usa forced a soviet submarine to surface in cuba after it has been hiding for months... Guess what they used? . . A depth charge is as powerful as a torpedo if not more.. The only difference is that it is not propelled. A depth charge training round will knock off an damage a subs periscope and its rubber coating. Its not just about the explosion but the aftershock that is deadly . . If well employed depth charge is very deadly and IT IS DROPPED IN PATTERN NOT ONE AT A TIME. who said any thing about hit they use proximity sensors. The USSR sub did not fire, it could of but did not. Sure but you need to be right on top of the target. Sure but not a 50knts. You cant race around well using them. |

lionel4power: at 50 knots the shaldag flies faster than all torpedoes in your inventory. We just circle around while dropping depth charge at your slow-moving sub... You cant drop torpedos at 50knts, if you travling towards the sub they can just plot a intcept course. They dont need a direct hit to damge it. The depth charges are more a anti mini sub and diver defence in a harbour. Even SA Navy as that. |

lionel4power: yes a modern sub... Besides the heroine cannot kill the shaldag. Why not. By modern i mean anyvthing with guided torpedos. |

Henry240: It can... I agree.
However the South-African Aircrafts do not have. True the Dakota MPA are far from modern and need to be replaced. But they still get the job done. The C47 is arguably the greatest aircraft ever made. |

lionel4power: it has depth charge for ASW. . Lol thats like point black range. A modern sub would kill you long before a depth charge got close. |

1. T72 plus something eastern European
2. T72 + curry
3. The gun is fake... why would a tank have a fake gun?
4. Think watches and chocolate 3 o that missile launcher israle kept secret for years. Thats not a tank |

Patchesagain: Hey Mike
I noticed that during Dec and Jan the Frigates and Opvs that are still in Port tend to sometime just sail out into false bay for a couple of hours and then sail back
I have been in here during other periods of the year and if a ship leaves port then it sails out to sea and dissapears
Wtf are they doing? Just testing out systems and making sure everything still works?
*there is currently a valour class dicking about in false bay* Testing systems that are either new, had maintenance done or been replaced. Training. Working up for deployment witch intals traing and testing the frigate in the bay now is going to india so is busy preparing gor that. Jan and Dec are festive seasons so they dont go to far away. Got to give people a break. |

gottfried21: I'm not sure whether this fits under security services...But here's the Ondonga King of Northern Namibia and his Royal Guard...
NB:The accessibility of Assault rifles to Civilians is worrying Why is it worrying. Most muders gun related killing use pistols. Those criminals that use assault rifels will have them no matter if it is legal or not. |

jln115: Wonder what the 2014 Defence Review states about the requirement for more airframes specifically fighter aircraft...anyway I think the Defence budget will get a reasonable increase this year thanks to the defence review, but I don't think it will be anything substantial, think the increases will mostly budget for transports for SAAF, and OPVs/IPVs for the navy as spesified in last years mid term budget.
Dont know if you can shed any light regarding budget increases and possible acquisitions seeing that your in the SANDF?? It simply says light advance fighter squdron(s) though long term it is a strike fighter. Not really. We dont set the budget that tressury. |

MikeCZAR: A result of poor funding. The Gripens are too still under operational test and evaluation. and so are most of pur aircraft, AFVs, ships extra extra. That will never really change. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by andrewza: 4:33am On Jan 02, 2016 |
jln115: Hawks are basically our Impala replacement, would be nice if SAAF could acquire 14 or so Gripen E/F to complement our current fleet. Most impales where training only. Both SAAF and SAAB want a few gripen E/F for SA. It is money thing. |

Foreign Affairs › Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by andrewza: 11:43pm On Jan 01, 2016 |
MikeCZAR: The 98 recommendation was still to replace the 250 fighter aircraft we had that time with 50 advanced jets. which is what was done.
The SAAF as seen with project curver initially wanted a fighter in the class of the Eurofighter Typhoon or Rafale.
they simply had to balance the requirements. The hawks where only officially made operational last year(2015) before that our entire combat air abliety fell on the gripens. The Hawks only being trainers. |

iblawi: Everyone considers it as 4G fighter jet even the west see it as a Gripen from the east. The most important thing is that our is likely to be block 2 which is comparable to Gripen C. The block 3 will be a 4++ generation jet. Just that we want to see them land on Nigerian soil before we make noise. I guess we are getting 3 next year. Pakistan see it as good as there F16's. It is not close the Gripen of the east. it is the F16 of china. It of course being modern means it is easier to maitian and run. In that regard it could be along the same line of the Gripen. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by andrewza: 1:38pm On Jan 01, 2016 |
Henry240: Nigeria has a requirement for 25-40 fighter jets or 3 squadrouns. If eventually confirmed by the F.G, the incoming jets would represent only a start of a much wider delivery. the old SA defense review had a requirement for two light fighter squadrons and one meduime. Yet we got only the light. Things change and any case buying in small batches here and there is costly. Better to buy a larger batch even if it is on credit. It more cost effective |

jln115: If it can be added to any Gripen, I don't know? But the one thing I know, is that the HMI on the SAAF Gripen are unique to them, the A-Darter however can be used on any Gripen as its been integrated on to them. we did not alter the aircraft and SAAB is needed to finish of integration |

jln115: Yes, the HMI on the SAAF Gripen is locally developed and only found in our Gripen. yes but as i said it is a added sytem that can be used on any Gripen. We just have them same as the A-dartar |
