My dear, it's sheer evil. Even if girls were equally powerful, since still of a different gender (or of sexual interest), rapists would still pounce on them & surprise them. There are also gay serial killers of gay men.

Why we cannot have standard forensic labs in each police zonal areas, with branches in each state across the country, is beyond me. To process crime scenes and feed DNA found into a national database. That way, criminals can even be caught if their relatives DNA's co-incidentally enter the database for unrelated incidences as simple as public disorder, traffic offences, etc. When DNA close match to a wanted criminal is detected. Sometimes many years after the crime was committed.

You can go ahead with the marriage without your dad's approval. But be ready to bear whatever comes your way. If your family members do not support your marriage, you will have far less support network when things get tough.

There were two romantic cases many years back. An inter-racial marriages where the girls' families and friends didn't attend their marriages.

Despite so much apparent love & romance, both marriages crashed within 10 to 15 years. It could have been a mere co-incidence. But family opposition couldn't have helped.

While we Africans go all religious about everything, we forget practical things often. The same God who has been "arranging" everything also says "honor your father and your mother". If you cannot accept the part of pregnancy, at least consider waiting for at least a year after your mother's passing as your father wants.

In my experience of diaspora education, you do not rely on archaic books but on scientific journals fresh off the press after Level 1. You are tested on the very latest on the body of knowledge. Not cramming, just theory or copy and paste.

At least in UK we can be sure the lady did not get her first class for sleeping with Nigerian lecturers.

People forget the extra motivation to succeed people have when you leave all family and friends behind to go succeed in another country.

OP, your mum might be suffering from personality disorder, probably borderline PD. Some might even classify it as anti-social personality disorder, since no self-harm is involved. But only an expert can determine that after appropriate consultations. Even at that, because several mental health conditions co-exist (mood disorders are common in personality disorder patients for example) and the person in question might not readily manifest some of the symptoms to match the diagnostic criteria, a seasoned expert might still struggle to get it right sometimes.

Basically, your mum is not doing it on purpose. It's an illness. And she needs help.

Mental health conditions are VERY common in Nigeria. The vast majority are not diagnosed as only very few seek help. Especially because of the stigma attached to it. It's costing us heavily in terms of family & societal cohesion, crime and economic loss.

If you have other siblings or trusted close relatives, enlist their help. She will resist and raise dust but persevere.

Madness is only a tiny part of mental health issues. Explain that to her. She's NOT MAD. You can just tell her she needs help to cope with emotional issues. That it's not her fault. Abandoning her will cause more problems. And you might come to regret it seriously for running away.

Before that, try to catch her in a happy mood and respectfully find out about her childhood. Most personality disorder sufferers had a very harsh, difficult or even traumatic experience earlier in life. The high number of inmates with personality disorder is no coincidence.
