I just want the monster called Nigeria to let my people go.

Well, you will have to convince the born-to-rule champions up North. You don't suppose that the SE or SS would oppose your "Mitzvah Moshe" or Operation Moses, do you? grin
Why did he not reject obj's award ? grin

Was he broke then ?
.

Remember that when democracy returned in 1999, everybody including Achebe was optimistic.

Obj may be anything but you have to give it to him that in his first coming as head of state he tried within 3 years and introduced democracy albeit with some some flaws.

Obasanjo also began well in 1999 so it was normal to give him the benefit of the doubt at least during his first term.
Obj may yet turn out to be the the best among the horrible lot we have had the misfortune to have as heads of state.

Mind you I am neither a Westerner nor an Easterner. I have no parochial or tribal reasons to take side with any.

bittyend: Those who rejected those honours didn't do it because they don't like England. They did it because they don't like the monarchy and what it represents. Stop comparing apples to oranges. cheesy
.

Where did Achebe ever say that he hated Nigeria? Have you ever read his book " The problem with Nigeria"? I guess not. He has always said our problem is mainly problem of leadership.

Achebe had a severe accident in in Naija in 1990, and paralysed from waist down. Going to live in America mainly for his health does not equate to hating nigeria.
Obj gave him merit award and an ofr national award,he collected it.

Jonathan offered him later,he refused it.

When did he become a politician by choosing whom to receive and reject awards from?
.

Anyone can reject any honour if he so wishes. Some people refuse MBE, OBE, CBE and even knighthood from the Queen of England everytime. These honours are actually from the Prime Minister's office. Only very few honours come from the Queen directly.
Politics › Re: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by AreaFada2:
What an elder can see from his chair, a youngster cannot see from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro!

Achebe saw the real problem with Nigeria and preached tirelessly that we should correct it. Op claims Achebe never believed in Nigeria and was too pessimistic.

Was his pessimism justified? He was 30 years old at independence. He saw the great promise that Nigeria held. Have we lived up to expection? Capital no. On the contrary even African countries with less population than Bayelsa and less GDP than Yobe state now laugh at us.

For people like Achebe, it must have been heart-wrenching to see Nigeria as it is. For those born and bred in a mediocre Naija, it may not seem to matter as they have never seen any better.

Achebe once veered into politics but he documented clearly that those in Nigerian politics are only there for their pockets and advancement, not to serve the people.

Achebe had too much decency and conscience to remain in Naija politics.

He has finished his own battle. The battle to rescue Naija is now ours to lose.

Muyesky: Why would you need metal doors throughout the house? Never heard of or seen that........unless you are actually trying to build a vault or a strong room. Believe me, it has no advantage at all..........once again, never heard of it but you could be the first but please find other reasonable avenues to channel your hard earned cash........just a piece of advise.
.

I certainly have lots of things to spend money on......it's good to seek advice from many sources. I have already saved quite a bit of money by taking my time to make enquiries so far.

I think we overbuild houses in Naija. From elaborate pillars that serve no real function to all kind of tacky additions.
That's what I like about the simple but functional design of your house.
Properties › Re: Building My 3 Bedroom Bungalow (the Apocalypse) by AreaFada2: 11:58pm On Mar 23, 2013
mufutau55: Good advise at that. Metal doors inside is like prison.. we are already inprisoned with those iron window guards and entrance/exit metal doors.. If the security in Nigeria is still as good as when I was living in Nigeria, we shouldn't even be needing all those prison guards and doors. Good advise Muyesky.

Mufutau
..

You're right.....my madam always complains about lack of fresh air and breeze due to high fence whenever she visits home. Only God can save one in emergency. Apparently some people are now using metal doors throughout......he said that he used it in his own house just recently built..........I will ask him to send pictures of his own via BBM.

skimanski: lol Very funny. Metal Doors (Security doors mostly with peepholes all inside your house) your entry door and Kitchen exit door should be enough for metal doors, or maybe if you have any other door like verandah doors or doors that leads directly outside. Please don't waste your money ooo on metal doors oo. First they aren't as beautiful and internal wooden/panel doors except d very expensive ones.
.

I have never used any internal metal doors in the past either.....but you know when you are away, you start to hear different things, like how security is worse these days. Wooden doors have done very well for me.

Muyesky: My bad!!!!!! I actually meant 8.5k.......so sorry about the confusion for each window with net.
@muyesky,

My builder is recommending metal doors throughout the house. This should start after Easter God willing. But is there any real advantage of metal doors inside the house? The internal doors should be about 16 or so, not sure until I have a look at the plan again.

mufutau55: Thanks Muyesky. I know they will use planks all that too.. I just wasn't sure if they also use iron. My duplex has already past the foundation level,
they have laid few coaches of blocks past the foudation.. but they never did the German floor, I was told it could be The photos is posted below.. the Duplex is the inmcoplete one and the BQ iis the completed one at the back and will be roofed in two weeks.
I will be coming home to complete the Duplex to Lintel level soon, then comes the big money of Decking... (this is the only best picture I have)
Good job Mutau55. It's going nicely. When you're doing your decking, please give us live news. Doing these things from diaspora is not easy. I have just roofed my own from diaspora........

Next project God willing will involve at least a penthouse but most likely a duplex...so I want to gather decking experience from a fellow diasporan. Next project, I will be going home to supervise it myself.

jeffizy: Funny enuf, its a two-way thing. I know a tribe where obessity is glorified in marriages. It is seen as a sign of taking good care of their wives. How lame can that be?
.

Not as lame as you think, old-fashioned yes.

Time was when there were no fridges/freezers (if you were around in the 70s even, many families didn't have) and food could be scarce during some seasons after rodents devour stored harvest between planting season and tail end of harvest season. So keeping your bride looking healhy/well-fed wasn't easy. Women also used to breastfeed for up to 2yrs, requiring much energy.

As for the floor tiles and wall tiles to be done, have you checked out the prices yet?

jackbauersballs: An Okoro from Ondo State?

What Next - An Agunbiade from Enugu? cheesy

Wonders never cease...

Congrats to her anyway.
Actually both Ekiti and Ondo have many people with non-traditional Yoruba names. Some are of Benin/Edo descent as far back as imperial time.

Okoro in Edo for example means prince as in a King's son and is a fairly common surname. I am sure that name exists in some other languages in addition to Igbo.

Have you forgotten Ojo Maduekwe? An Ibo with non-Igbo sounding first name?

The Apocalypse has come out nicely. Very good job.

Is it really true that all the tiles in front of the house cost 20k and tiler charged 2.5k?

If so can you give the contact of the place you bought the tiles and the tiler please?
How many square metres of tiles did you buy?
Health › Re: Coping With Mental Illness In Nigeria: A Beautiful Writer's Experience by AreaFada2:
I was talking to a friend who is now sadly late years back that a paper I read claims that almost 50% of people in Naija have one mental case or another.

To my surprise he said, it is not that 50% has a mental issue, the question if there's anyone at all who doesn't.

He went on to say that all those crazily looting money, frustration of the average person by the system, fear and insecurity of the average to the rich, poverty, unemployment, good people being frustrated from leading in the society, all these and more are no recipe for a mentally healthy society.
