pocohantas: In the foundational years of America, the early Caucasian settlers believed African slaves were property and not human. Certainly could not vote. That was racist. But you know what? that did not stop them from raping their female slaves and breeding children with them. Therefore I do not agree with you on this point. A mindset/pattern of racist behavior does not just change dramatically like that., Not to say one cannot change one's viewpoint but to me I wonder if this "change" was not as a result of the money making potential he saw with those kids. This is afterall America 1 Like |

Travel / Re: Pls A Good Suggestion For A Perplexed Law Graduate Who Intends Leaving Nigeria by aribs(m): 5:49pm On Jul 16, 2018 |
Depends on how much resources are available to you and what you would want to do. I would concur with the views of Cyberknight for the most part. If your resources are able to make you pass exams such as LSAT here in the US so you can go for a three -year program, then by all means sure. However, if this is not so, would suggest you explore other areas if you really want to school abroad. I would not suggest a Masters in Law except you are doing a Masters in Taxation Law or some other high specialty masters. Those might give you an advantage but they are quite tough (not impossible). Here in the US, which is common law like Nigeria, the market for lawyers is not doing so great except you go to certain schools which sort of give you a leg up over competition so that is also one factor you should consider. Ultimately, your resources, ability to adapt based on your country of choice and your personal drive would be the ultimate decider. By the way thanks Pocohantas 1 Like |

Bede2u:Just in case u don't know, there are those who do want a Yoruba republic among the yorubas. My argument goes for those who want that too..this oil u mention, other than the elites who have the wherewithal to invest in/Buy the oilfields ( which again cuts across), how has it impacted the average Joe on the streets of Osogbo, Awka, and Azare? The term emotional as used referees to all parties , not just Igbo...everyone needs to first stop this sheer absurdity, know the real enemies for who they are and begin to proffer solutions on a way out. If there is news of a potential war, you think those willing to invest will come to ND? Everyone loses here as I see it . Not worth it |

Bede2u:I have no doubt these are fine men and women .I have listened to them speak at different fora. However, politics is a different beast altogether. I am sure you do know that this new nation will need time, possibly a number of years before the right infrastructure can be put in place. Not going to be Eldorado immediately. What about the other points raised? even during the First Republic, the political elite in Nigeria (this cuts across all tribes)have continued to take the masses for a ride, it has always been us against them . They have kept us busy with issues such as tribe and religion as they struggle for access to the national.purse. they have created a beggar class (almajiri, political thugs, assassin's for hire ) out of the very people they were to protect. Nationhood is a messy business . As i said earlier, let the head lead the heart. |

Bede2u:Not sure where u got the 80 percent Hindu from as there are ethnic and religious minorities such as the Sikhs, Christians and moslems there. Your argument as u put it seems to imply there is a superior genre that kicks in once separation is complete. You mention Singapore. U had Lee Kwan Yeu there who laid these sound polices that made sure the country grew solidly . Pray, which among the elites u know right now of eastern Nigerian extraction will be able to formulate these policies? This is what i mean by building institutions or is independence gotten just for the sake of it ? How then would the new nation not dissolve into chaos? I live in the US and went to graduate school here . Even in conservative Texas where i schooled , we Nigerians from different tribes co existed peacefully. I have received and given assistance from igbos and other Nigerians and i am sure this is not unigue to me . U say Americans don't have loyalty to country of origin. Then u should see the stadiums packed full of Mexican Americans when the US plays Mexico. This as I said does not negate self determination but at what cost? Those who are directly affected what then happens to them ? How is it to be done to ensure this does not bring war and everyone s interest is carried along? What is there to make the country viable. This is not being emotional as I see emotion is high on all sides. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Bede2u: No , I don't think people will get together just like that. u say Nigeria is peculiar. this may be true but its not the only country in the world with a diverse set of people speaking different tongues and with different religions. India is in a similar situation. different religions ,varying tribes. pray how does dividing really solve anything here? I am Yoruba . in the ethnic group, there are various subsets . you would have the same issue of one subset wanting to lord it over the others. in terms of economic viability, has anyone thought of how to create institutions for such a country. how will the new country not mirror the very evils you say you want to avoid by going separately? How then do you divide national assets in such a scenario? Are you willing to wage war to kill those who may oppose you? this utopian ideal of when we get our country, life will be so much better is not realistic. by all means I understand self determination is appropriate but let the true cost be taken into account also 1 Like 1 Share |

babaolofin: You are quite right. this protest and attack on peaceful protesters is disgraceful and should be condemned for what it is but then to be honest, even to the deaf and blind, it is obvious that the election wounds of 2015 are yet to heal which is sad. the vitriolic attacks on both sides of the divide have exacerbated the matter to the point of tension..If the separatist Kanu would want to take his campaign to the North, I am afraid he might begin something he would regret really. If he has police or guards, who would protect the average Igbo trader in the North who just wants to go about his business? I think it is time for laying aside these issues and having frank discussions on the way forward. I do not support the breakup of Nigeria as I see no value in it and I am yet to see a non-violent breakup in Africa (Eritrea and South Sudan as examples). This election is over people. Do not let those who seek to divide using ethnicity and religion destroy common values we hold dear. their kids and loved ones are here with me in the US and the West, living the best of lives with unfettered access to cash siphoned by their elitist politician parents. the ones that are in naija have visas on their passports and will take off if things go south. the ordinary Nigerian will be the refugee, the homeless starving ones... There is nothing that cannot be debated. Let peace reign 4 Likes 1 Share |

PapaBrowne:This is not sensational reporting but a factual analysis done after forensic auditing..the evidence being alluded to here is the use of funds from Sanomi's companies yo fund bribes. There is a clear nexus between these payments and corrupt proceeds. As to whether he is criminally liable or not, the burden of proof will be on them to prove that he knew those funds were going ro bribe corrupt officials in Nigeria. For the purposes of asset forfeiture, the proof is there and the connection has been established 1 Like |

Crispels:You have a very good academic background in my opinion and you would succeed anywhere regardless of where u eventually settle . However since you want to move to the US , here is my advice 1) please come through the school.route if you don't have anyone to sponsor a green card for you. That keeps you legal while you are exploring your options . 2) prepare to work very hard while you are here . Lots of people are super brilliant and are as accomplished as you are. What would differentiate you is your hunger for success . Focus on getting your good grades . To be honest in my own experience , no one cared what grade I made in university in nigeria . The experience you will get here is unparalleled and can set u up for life depending on how you handle things . They cared more about my experience , GRE scores, and the fact that I demonstrated that I would be willing and able to undertake the academic rigor a postgraduate degree entails . I have a few options if you are interested based on your background. I normally wouldn't talk this much but I love to see people succeed, people who are not afraid to work hard and believe in their dreams.Cheers |

Are you ready to live here illegally with menial jobs for sometime? If you think the US is Eldorado you are sadly mistaken.. with no papers you are like a fish without water. I would never advise anyone to live here illegally. I have seen it time and time again those who you left back home to "hustle" illegally in the US would have bypassed you while you are doing your odd jobs . Then let me ask you... on getting to the US , do you have plans on how to raise money to further your education? There is nothing wrong in migration ...however migration with no idea of what to expect will leave u a very frustrated person. Or even land you back home with a dented travel record. Carefully weigh your options as you plan your next adventure 9 Likes |

Politics / Re: The Lagos Calabar Rail Controversy: What everyone should know by aribs(m): 2:05pm On Apr 12, 2016 |
Clever writeup but your points are not all valid. To address them one by one: First you claim we have an incompetent executive . That in this case could be because you may not have a full understanding of what goes into a budget bill. A budget is a bill of law that is passed like any other bill before the legislature. Amendments are made and are allowed up till when the bill leaves the committee stage. This bill hhad neither been considered by the whole Senate no gone through the First or Second Reading. Even in advanced democracies, budgets go through this same process and it is not uncommon to have serial amendments made to budget estimates To your other point about having a ruling party in disarray, I think that is the collective fault of the Nigerian voting public. Candidates of different political.parties stood for election into our legislature. If we chose to elect incompetent people to these institutions regardless of political.party affiliations , that is on us. This flows to your third point about the seeming incapacity of these senators to deliver on their mandate. This shows the quality of those the Nigerian voting public thought best would fit. For instance , what are the qualifications of those who hold these seats ? Do they have the right advisors? In other countries freshmen lawmakers have technical advisers who guide the lawmakers in the performance of their duties. Here it is a job for the boys and hangers on...this budget debacle to me reflects everything wrong with how we perceive candidates . What we should care about is how to make sure all organs of government remember that we put them there and they are supposed to.work.for our interest irrespective of political.affiliations 4 Likes 2 Shares |
