Seeing some comments here and I can’t but laugh at the unbelievably unintelligent nature these comments. Parroting “ Trump” , “Russia” just shows how low intellect has sunken. Explain what this means and how it impacts the US /global economy and they will surely go mute. Awon apoda

Is Nigeria really taking taxation serious? The very rich do not pay commensurate taxes. Large companies find there way to manouver with taxes. The tax net is not wide. They dont go to chase tax in Alaba, Idumota and the likes where big informal business is going on. Are we really taking tax serious? Or are we just increasing taxes for those who are already in the net?
You know I do agree with you that the tax base is not even close to capturing everyone that should be in it though some of these people are also being squeezed with all sorts of levies. What we need to figure out to me is a way to really streamline it to understand who pays what and where it is to be paid to… definitely broaden the net with a view to not letting ease of doing business suffer as a result of multiple taxation

Tax must be based on equity. Seriousness should start with expanding the base and not hitting the same set of people. Nigeria can track incomes and do equitable application of taxes. Yes, there is every sense in progressive increase of items like VAT but we must look at our circumstances. Why are companies including MNCs choosing Ghana ahead of Nigeria, knowing that VAT in Ghana is up to 13.5%? I think our first objective is to get the country to work, then government should show commitment to providing more and better services and facilities on the bases of taxes and levies collected. Not the common scenario of 'system is down' whenever you want to transact business with government. Even when paying taxes, the system isnt friendly. Improve the systems, pursue equity and transparency, impose taxes, improve services. Our airport taxes are high but what services do you get when you go there? People say Ghana airports are far better and friendlier than ours these days. We need the balance. It should not be seen that government continue to raise taxes and there is little to show for it other than to pay a bloated and far from productive government workforce.

Now you are conflating issues of governance with basic economic and taxation. Correct governance can be improved on and should be and there are many other issues such as ease of doing business and public infrastructure and others which may influence a company to set up in a country with a higher tax rate but to say don’t tax till you get it right , even when it is obvious the country is broke will not be good policy. There is also a part for citizen advocacy. If you hear Americans talk they will refer to their tax dollars and so the government know they need to be largely accountable as the citizens remit a lot and will demand accountability loudly. products sold by these particular manufacturer are not essential in any way and the excise tax costs being indirect will be passed to the consumer who must then make a choice to consume this or find an alternative so it’s not hitting the manufacturers bottom line . I expect they will simply raise prices

They increased VAT by 50% last year, a move which many people saw as counter-productive. So what have they achieved with that? Record high inflation. Unemployment. Rise in social vices.

We like to copy Britain and America in everything. Go to Dubai - low taxes, high productivity and high goverment revenue. This is Economics 001 for developing countries. When you are really developed like the US and when your tax net is wide and you are able to provide a lot of services, when wealth has increased significantly, then you can toy with taxes. ECONOMICS 001.

6+ years after, this administration is still struggling to come to terms with basic thinking.

Have you been to Ghana to see what they charge as VAT ? A smaller economy than Nigeria way more in VAT then nigeria does. When we criticize we must be objective. The truth is Nigeria has one of the lowest tax bases in the world and that has significantly impacted revenue sources due to our over reliance on oil receipts. There is a reason why the Britain and America you mention are doing well and this is because there are tax dollars to fund critical
Areas of the government. Please read up on Dubai s economic challenges being faced recently and learn how the government has been retooling to face its new future. How exactly is nigeria supposed to pay for the services before implementation of tax reform ? Agreed on the need to increase the tax base but everyone as is done in working economies must pay their fair share. This is how Nigerians will learn to demand for accountability and prudent use of resources when their tax naira is involved

What mass hunger are these dolts talking about? Do they even know what they are talking about ? Mass hunger to buy carbonated drinks ? Higher prices for sure but those who want it have never been deterred by higher prices. They should charge the excise tax already. Glad to see nigeria is taking taxation more seriously now than before

The question is why will anyone even want the government to pay such money when it’s obviously removing subsidy to curb waste and it is flat broke? That government statement was obviously more political than economic and there is no way they can do it. Why not just admit to Nigerians what some of Us already know? We are damn broke and poor

I know this IPOB rabble rousing , hate spreading tiger they have been riding on will eventually consume them and the whole world will see them for what they are: a group whose ideology was perhaps grounded on nobler causes but that has descended into paranoia and utter madness. Spewing hate has never been a strategy- arresting and prosecuting this Kanu fellow is one of the few things I would think Buhari got right and I don’t even like Buhari.

How could I forget the 2004 “Campus Queen “ movie with Tunde Kelani? And your work with young aspiring musicians through TalentHouse? You were an absolute legend to me . The kind of example these new cats sorely need at this time. It is never how long but how much impact one makes while around. Only one Igbo army officer was killed and it was a mistake as he was never slated to die. No politician from the east was killed. Not one. Were they saints? Meanwhile, almost all senior army officers of northern extraction were wiped out. One was even killed with his wife. A pregnant wife, for that matter.

I am not justifying any pogrom, you are the one trying to justify a needless coup. Even the coup was not a problem. The people were willing to accept the authority of Ironsi. Guess what, he totally mismanaged the situation.

As for cries of Igbo Amaka being meaningless, your reason is quite silly. How did Northern leaders kill them pre-independence? They were killing them while having them work in the northern civil service and use northern slots in the military? They were killing them at a time the North and East were political allies? Or you think it's an accident that many prominent Easterners (Ojukwu, Azikiwe, Cyprian Ekwuensi) were born in the North?
Fantastic articulation of FACTS

As at then, public smoking is normal and permitted. In fact, the most popular ads on Tv and Radio then were by Tobacco companies. You will hear on radio ads like "Cigar Target o!Na wa!".
But a lot has changed now so much that even cigarette packs now carry warnings that you are liable to die from smoking. Late President Shehu Shagari at that age, is not different from most of his age mates then ,he was probably in his late 20s or early 30s in the video and he's still looking charismatic. So it's not a big issue.

The late Prime Minister's clearly brilliant and knowledgeable about the subject he is talking on as this was a big issue then to discuss because of the civil rights movement in the US , so here he's throwing Nigeria's big national pride and international clout against racism considered then such sensitive international debate. Wow!! No one will believe he is the leader of a country that was barely 5 years old with such aura and authority of power & influence he was oozing ; he went as far as stating categorically what he told the US political leaders while in Washington against racism. His diction and command of English is topnotch and his trademark baritone voice is so Presidential and reminds me of the voice of late Dr. Martin Luther King.

Up till now, I still wonder why this man and others like Chief SL Akintola and Premier Sardauna Alhaji Ahmadu Bello had to be assassinated. Unlike their peers in other regions who lived long enough to reproduce more of their followers, these two Leaders of Northern extraction were killed in their prime and did not live to do that for the North and till date, sets the North back so much that they are yet to recover. May we never experience such calamitous national loss again. God bless Nigeria. Our heroes past shall not be in vain. @ OP , thank you for sharing this.

Sorry for you, you are living in limbo. Maybe you are hustling, praying and fasting all night for government job to cure poverty then you are on a long thing. Except few juicy parastatal like NNPC, NCC etc then para military like FRSC. That I wrote there is what most civil servants earns in this country. If you see one living above that, he either have a side hustle or have a serious runs going on in his office. Nigeria is bad like that face the truth
You are probably right you know. I started working as a state legal officer in one of the south western states in 2007 at about 60k and I know other civil servants were earning even much less than I was then. I knagine the increase in subsequent years may have bumped them up to around the 60k mark now
To the topic, if I earned 60k then in 2007( almost 15 years ago) and was unable to contemplate such, I wonder , with all the hyper inflation around, why anyone would want to do such damage to themselves in the name of marriage. Better to invest energy into upping that income to accommodate present day realities
