It would be in their interest to keep Nigeria as one country The "West" would continue to explore opportunities both for themselves & the World whether with 1 Nigeria, 2 Countries or 3 Post Nigerian countries. This is not about them being superior to us. It's about how fast a Nation wants to go. vanbonattel: Are you surprised?
It's only in Igboland, a place where evil is frowned at and efforts made to correct things that the community comes together to punish their youths in a bid to save them from a societal evil as drug abuse. The method might not be the best, but it's a way of drawing attention to the evil called drug abuse.
Other parts of Nigeria would deny the drug use, ignore it or collect government money and embezzle it all in the name of lying to themselves. They will even give it religious interpretations or start trading blames like, "is it not yoruba people that sell our fulani boys drugs?"
Igboland is the best society in Africa. Hahahaha! You just had to, didn't you? |

ednut1: For every bad news there are more than 1000 married people enjoying their marriages abroad. Both men and women do all sort of rubbish abroad. 1. No house maid abroad, yet you allow your wife to work and do all chores alone. Some even demand for fresh food. Wont she divorce you after
2. Some men have been beating the wife from Nigeria, the day you slap her here she called police. Is it not justified
3. You cheat without shame, she con do you strong thing. Is she not justified
4. Some bring women abroad and tell her to use your account as salary account. Then you give her a fraction of her own salary o.
The law favours women too because for centuries men have had the advantage. The system corrupts them too, they hear things, see things at work places and lawyers working on commission bases plenty. A woman is entitled to your house after divorce especially if kids are involved, na you go leave. Child support and alimony too dey. Who no like free benefits
Abeg i don tire for man and woman matter hahaha Nice points. However, my 2 cents. What's cheating shamefully as against cheating at all? Secondly, when people say men have had advantages for centuries, do they realize that those men are dead? The women who are now enjoying the compensations too didn't suffer during those centuries. Different peoples suffering & rewarded! |

Focusmind: Forget the degree and focus on your career. [b]All those science courses in our universities are waste of time. [/b]Nigeria's economy is not productive and diversified to absorb those from natural sciences. I am not discouraging people, but studying natural science courses in Nigeria now is becoming waste of time.
I studied Engineering but couldn't make a breakthrough to secure a place in the oil industry. I got offer with an investment bank, with good starting salary as a trainee after passing the numerous aptitude tests and interviews. I enrolled for ICAN, starting from the foundation papers and qualified. Did masters abroad in finance and have since, became authority in finance and accounting. Currently, I am on my own as a chartered accountant and management consultant.
Science graduates have edge over their art counterparts. As an engineering graduate, we are better placed to pass the aptitude tests because of our strong background in mathematics. Many of my mates that scaled aptitude tests had background in engineering and sciences.
So, learn as much as you could. Go to YouTube and read about your functional area in the bank. You have to put extra efforts. A lot of Bankers majored in disciplines out side the finance and accounting courses.
Lucky you. Once you are able to secure a graduate position in the current Nigeria labor market, just thank your God, as a good career path has been created for you to follow. Those not lucky will be moving from one contract jobs to another; from one low position to another. Please, utilise this opportunity to the fullest. Don't waste it or take it for granted. Use it to build your capacity for the future as learning is a continuous thing.
I am grateful that such path came my way when it did. It is always difficult for people to find their footings in the corporate world once they miss that opportunity of being hired as a graduate trainee in reputable firms like banks or multinational.
Good luck to you! Hahahah. But you should use generalizations carefully though. The problem I see with most Nigerian scientists & Engineers is that they don't like to start small. They also don't want to make sacrifices too. Many Engineers made the same complaints you made too. Also justifying their not taking to business (Engineering) to lack of funds. Guess what? When they were 6-7 years in banking and had made a few Nmillions they became [comfortable], lost their Engineering curiousity and pushed further into banking. How much did Cyril bamford use to start JCB, what about Riese & Muller, What did Stephen Saad(an Accountant) know to create the largest Pharmaceutical company of African origin? You may say these are foreign examples, fine. Then what about Fidelis Ayaebae of Fidson pharma, Gilbert Izodike of Cutix Plc (He left an established company -Raychem to create Cutix). My point here is not that it is easy to create companies in science & Engineering space in Nigeria but that many Science & Engineering graduates lack the skills / curiosity to do so in the first place having only choosen these courses for PECUNIARY gains alone. |

My opinion- You should not just take it but think through - is that you don't remain in Commercial banking.
Commercial banking, unless you are sure of steady promotions is a commoditized career.
I would have said you should get a CIBN or ICAN but even that may not help if you stay too long in general banking. Unless if you are in a specialized function in a bank, the [technical] skills are hardly transferable. Specialized functions include: Legal,IT, HR, Treasury, Internal Audit/Risk or Accounts. These roles have equivalents in non-banking companies.
If you want to remain in Financial services Industry(but outside banking) Take CFA or CiiA (if CFA is expensive).
Funny enough, I find your industry very lucrative. The Reckitt benkisers, J&Js, Unilever, PZ, Freslands etc. would not exist without good biochemists. branding/Marketing spend are the difference between these guys & Nigerian brands. So don't cancel out going back — quickly too.
Financial services — Commercial banking— can become a very HOLLOW & Vapid industry. and when you're stuck it becomes hard to change. |

I swear there's more than 50, 000 armed security officers in Anambra alone not to talk of other southeast states, we don't need them, we don't want them, let them be deployed where they're needed. Don't you think you're over reacting? The police you see in Anambra were this many due to IPOB's threat. Typically in single state elections, Policemen are deployed — even in less volatile states. 2020 - Edo state elections - 30000 Policemen. 2018 - Ekiti - 30000 Policemen, ~4500 soldiers. 2021- Kaduna [LGAs elections] : 11000 Policemen deployed. LGA not even Guber! My point: It's not new in Nigeria to deploy police during elections. What makes Anambra a bit tense is a no brainer(threats by IPOB etc.), otherwise it would have been like any other state. Cheers. |

Without holding forth for this administration, Do you think they haven't? For one, besides the typical Nigerian incompetence, Kaduna state alone is bigger than all SE States combined. Like I told you earlier, the north might actually have the most, but 80% of that population are docile "ex-terrorists cum soldiers" who let banditry happen and even help their terr0rist kin ambush the reliable 20%.
What matters is their activeness. You saw the video of security agents at idemilli right? Now, we the masses, would like to see such video taking place in Niger, Zamfara- where twenty soldiers were killed and roasted afterwards, Borno. These are hot zones with terrorism.
The country is at war! And as such, 89% of the security agents(especially the army and airforce) should be in the North, where the war is happening. Not sharing them equally across the 6 geopolitical zones as if, nothing serious is happening in the North.
How about sending 36000 police men to Anambra because of mere election, when kaduna would need such security more. Are they not wasting resources and chasing shadows? It's a charade. Call a spade a spade. Calm down. But there are several videos since 2012 showing onslaughts against BH in the north on YouTube. Vice news & Voice of America carried these a few times. Your points are not nuanced. Hope you know that Kaduna state is larger than 4 or 5 SE states combined. That puts any military effort to a stretch. Thank God you finally agreed that there's more military presence in the NE than SE. That was my point. I'm not sure but the slain soldiers here are more than likely going to be northerners. By the way, the military showdown at Nnobi 2 days ago isn't really a big deal. Matter of fact, the Police was the leading arm on that exercise not the army (although they were part). What's more? More northerners (soldiers & civilians) have died from the BH menace than any other group since 2011. May God help us. |

For instance, Some people might have 10k in one account and 500k in another account That makes it even worse. Meaning if they use unique account names i.e. BVNs, much smaller % than 0.6% would have 500k & above. I assumed a more optimistic estimate of 1 account pers person which I know is not true. It's much worse with BVN. |

If armed robbers rob a bank and steal depositors money then you will be paid back any amount in your account as long as it does pass the NDIC insurance threshold of 500k.
E.g If a depositor has 600k in an account, imagine, armed robbers steal his money from the bank or the bank gets bankrupt, he would be paid insurance on only 500k, his 100k is gone and won't be paid. Correct. We are saying the same thing. This statistics was supposed to be about deposit insurance. It just happened to show another phenomenon also. Which is a fairly shocking poverty level. |

Every depositor in commercial banks are insured by the NDIC to the tune of 500k.
People who have more than 500k in their bank account are not insured by the NDIC because it passes their insurance threshold. About 0.6% of account holders fall into that category.
For instance, if you have 600k in a bank account, you are not covered by the ndic insurance policy. In situations like that, you create another bank account, whereby you keep 500k in one and 100k in another, that way you get insured by the ndic when the bank goes bankrupt Virtually ALL commercial bank accounts are insured by the NDIC. With the following (laughable) exceptions. banks don't even have a choice. Which of the exceptions below are you implying.

Don't get it twisted It's the same thing. All bank accounts are covered with the NDIC to the tune of 500K. Meaning the exposure to losses are those over the insured amount AKA 0.6%. the rest of the 99.4% are fully covered. Meaning, less than 500k. Chriswazo: Really. That's 750 Eur. I don't believe this stat for business cities like Aba and so on.
In simple terms, if U have even 20mil in a bank and it liquidates tomorrow, U can only get 500,000 naira back, this is a very low sum honestly, coverage should be up to a mil at least. If you don't believe the NDIC, who do we believe? Me & you? Look at it this way, there are ~79.3m active bank accounts in Nigeria (2019, per statists.com). If 99.4% are =<500k, it means that 0.60% are above that number. Well, 0.6% of 79.3m is about 475,800. Pushing this numbers up a bit to 1% of 80m account = 800,000. Is it hard to think of that only about ~ 800,000 accounts (not people) have > 500k? Shouldn't be. I mean this is a Nigeria where affording a fairly used washing machine puts you in the easy middle class. A 2017 Honda CR-V (Tokunbo)? You have arrived to all your neighbours.
