The Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, Mr. Jelani Aliyu MFR, on Thursday 16th November 2017 said the Council shall collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the local automotive industry to make electric cars a reality in Nigeria. 

Jelani who disclosed this at the official launch of the first FUSO Truck Assembled in Nigeria by Cfao assembly plant in Lagos stated that NADDC is committed to work closely with all the players in the auto industry to ensure that Nigeria would leapfrog and join the global trend irrespective of the challenges, adding that it is time for Nigeria and friends of Nigeria to take the bull by the horns and embrace technological advancement in the automotive industry as Nigeria could not afford to be left behind in this global movement. 

The Director General congratulated FUSO/Cfao motors for making waves in the auto industry. “It is really an incredible milestone for the automotive sector in Nigeria to have CFAO and FUSO Truck launch an assembly plant right here in the country with the capacity to assemble at least five trucks per day”.

He however challenged the operators in the industry to come up with more advanced solutions to transportation in Nigeria as most of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the developed countries are gradually moving away from production of conventional cars.

Electric vehicle is gradually becoming the talk in the mouth of all. With concern to the soaring gas prices and environmental friendliness, electric cars seem to be the answer.
The Electric car is relatively a new concept in the automotive industry.

These EVs have their good sides; they are good in their own unique way. Be it as it may, there are several reason why it won’t be able to sell in Nigeria as they are being sold out in the developed countries.

Some of these EVs include Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric or Tesla Model S, Chevrolet Volt.



There are certain reasons why a typical Nigerian won’t fancy electric vehicles. They are:

1. The Range Anxiety:

For electric cars, you don’t just walk into your cars to drive; you need to do some calculations to know where and where you can go with the charges. After facing calculation wahala in school, you’ll still have to do some calculations before you leave your house…that’s weird.

A typical Nigerian man is not ready to be doing this. It will be a turn-off.


2. No sharp sharp refill:

If you drive the conventional combustion engine and you’re running low on fuel, you just enter any gas station closeby and fill up. This won’t take much time (Except you dey queue for NNPC to buy cheaper).

The case is totally different for EVs. It takes time to charge. It takes up to 4-6 hours or more to get them fully charged. 15 minutes of charging will just add few miles to the energy bank. That’s sad.

A typical Nigerian man loves sharp sharp things.


3. Charging the EVs:

This will be a very big problem for Nigerians. All EVs need power to charge them and Nigeria as a country is already facing power issues.
Introducing electric vehicles will bring in more problems. EVs are not suitable for places having power shortage; Nigeria is among.


4. They are relatively expensive:

This one na money matter.

Take out your time to check the prices of these EVs’ and you’ll see that they are on the high side. The more affordable ones fall under $30,000 to $40,000 price range, while the luxury models creep into $80,000 and upwards.

In Naira, we are talking of N10 million upwards. An average Nigerian can’t afford this just to buy a car.

EVs no dey like Tokumbo o ��.


5. Maintenance issues:

Electric cars won’t give much headache like their combustion engine counterparts; they don’t need engine oil, just rotate your tires.

The big question now is: what will you do when an issue arises?

It might be difficult to take it for repairs. There are no many experts who would be able to handle them.

A Coca Cola truck lost control on 3rd Mainland Bridge and poured several crates and bottles on the bridge. The truck also rammed into a Toyota Corolla from behind before it came to a halt.

When it comes to cars and the automobile industry at large, there are terminologies used to describe certain things that you might not be able to see in our conventional dictionaries.

It may not be possible to know all of these terms and their meaning. This post is for the petrol heads (car lovers) that don't like being left behind. You occasionally come across these terms on car related blog posts, magazines and other social media platforms.

You want to know what an auto guy means when he talks right? This is for you. Relax, read and enjoy what we have for you.

1. Drophead:
This is the British term for ‘convertible’, It is mostly used by Rolls Royce.
A convertible car simply means an automobile body style that can convert between open-air mode and an enclosed one.

2. Coupe:
It is a car with a fixed-roof body style that is shorter than a sedan or saloon of the same model. We fondly call it ‘two doors’ here in Nigeria.

3. OBD:
This is an acronym for ‘on-board diagnostic’. All cars after the year 1996 come with it. OBD is an interface with which your car communicates with computers in order to troubleshoot and detect car related faults.

4. Horsepower:
This is a measure of how much power (energy) an engine can cough out. In other word, it is the rate at which the engine performs work.

5. Torque:
In simple terms, it’s the amount of rotation a given amount of power can generate.

6. ABS:
This stands for ‘antilock brake system’. It was introduced in the year 1985 as a safety feature to give drivers more control when braking. The ABS system uses sensors to monitor the breaks to prevent skidding during panic stops or when braking hard on a wet or slippery surface.

7. Oversteer:
This occurs when you are cornering. If your rear tires start to lose traction before your front tires do, your car will experience oversteer. This will cause the back end of the car to step out, and you will start to go sideways.

8. Understeer:
This is the opposite of oversteer. When cornering and your front tires start to lose traction before your rear tires do. When this happens, the front of your car will refuse to turn the way you want it to; the rear will still be gripping the road.

9. Pound-foot (pound-feet):
This is used as a measure for torque. Abbreviated as lb.-ft

10. Throttle blip:
Applying a short stab of the throttle in order to raise your engine revs.

11: Drivetrain:
The drivetrain is the part of a vehicle which transfers the engine power to the wheels. It consists of Transmission, Propeller shaft, axles etc. Depending on the vehicle’s design, engine power is transmitted by the transmission to the front wheels, the rear wheels, or to all four wheels.
The wheels receiving power are called drive wheels: They propel the vehicle forward or backward. Most automobiles either are front-wheel or rear-wheel drive. In some vehicles, four-wheel drive is an option the driver selects for certain road conditions; others feature full-time, all-wheel drive.

12. FWD:
Stands for front-wheel drive. This is a type of drivetrain where power to propel the car are all transmitted to the front wheels.

13. RWD:
This stands for rare-wheel drive. This type of drivetrain sends all the power needed for propelling the vehicle to the rear wheels.

14. AWD:
Vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive transmit power to all four wheels at all time.

15. 4WD:
It stands for four-wheel drive.
A 4WD system is almost the same with the AWD, but it is more rugged. A 4WD system can be part-time or full-time. The driver selects the mode the car will operate on (part-time). It is full time when the driver has no control over it.

If you drive such cars, I believe fueling your car should be the least of your worries. �.

Does running the air conditioner increase fuel consumption of your car?
Yes, yes and yes. It does by 5-10%.
Why on earth will this increase the fuel consumption and make the car thirstier??

Let’s break it down.
AC requires power to run the compressor. This power comes from the crankshaft which is turned by burning fuel.
There is no free lunch when it comes to thermodynamics… you pay for it. Fuel is the currency.

Some cars user manual will also recommend you use AC on highway; reason being it reduces aerodynamic drag.

If you want want to save every drop of fuel, these are the things you do.

As the name implies, it was an Auto Rally and not a Political Rally. However, the accolade the Ondo Auto Rally received is synonymous to a peace campaign which brings every Nigerian together as one whilst promoting economic activities.

It all started at 7am on Friday 10th of Nov. 2017 when the race drivers and other attendees started to converge at the Mobil Filling Station located between the old toll gate and Berger Bus/Stop in Lagos. At the same time, other participants set out from other cities across Nigeria even as far as Birnin Kebbi .

The Lagos crew arrived Chief Michael Ade-Ojo of Elizade’s hometown, Ilara-Mokin in Ondo State at 2 pm with a huge convoy after feasting on Dodo Ikire and Akara Osu during the road trip. Little did they know Round 2 awaited them as they were welcomed with soft and fluffy pounded yam and vegetable with palm wine. When it comes to Pounded Yam (Iyan), Ondo State does not carry last.

Before we could say Jack…. drivers were already revving their engines and the motorsports fever filled the air. There was a friendly sprint race between “The Tiger Race Car” and “The Rage” which the latter won by a nose. The BMW M6 by Stingray also swung into action with it’s intimidating 600 horsepower and a thunderous exhaust note.

The roadshow landed everyone at the Smoking Hill Golf Course where the Ford Raptor stole the show with a 4×4 drift as the 6.2litre truck disappeared into its own dust.

The first day of the event ended with an evening party at Elizade University which was anchored by Vermis Bakare and Mz Kiss.

OFF-ROAD RALLY IN ILARA-MOKIN
Day 2 started with complementary breakfast at the awesome Heritage Continental Hotel in Akure before everyone headed back to Ilara-Mokin for the Off-Road Rally Stage of the Ondo Auto Rally. It was a dirt track on closed roads through the villages with lots of dust and ditches which sent several cars aiming for the skies.

Who would have thought the residents of those villages would love motorsports that much? Obviously, they wanted some more as everyone was chanting Team Rage! Team Rage!! .. Team Rage had just won the Off-Road Rally; the driver Olumiyiwa Akintola and co-driver Leye Binuyo were elated. The second and third positions were taken by Kingsley Uwatse and Peter Awojirin respectively.

CIRCUIT ROAD RACE IN AKURE
The Circuit Stage started 2 hours behind schedule because the Off-Road Rally took longer than expected. However, the fun was tremendous. Akure residents didn’t want to miss a thing so they came out en masse. 11 racing teams partook with so much desperation to win the golden cup and the ultimate cash prize.

It got more intense when cars started drifting through corners and flying over slopes to the extent one of the cars had a tyre burst. OMG! You surely missed if you were not there. At the end of the 3 lap circuit race, The Stingray Team (Antonio Sandouk and Dossy Sandouk) won by a landslide with Tunde Ojosipe and Habibu Nagide taking the second and third positions respectively.

The Governor of Ondo State, His excellency, Rotimi Akeredolu graced the occasion and commended the organisers of the first Auto Rally in Ondo State, saying the event has boosted the tourism potential of the state. He said, “This is Sunshine State, I can tell you we have the best potentials for tourism in its natural state”, while addressing the teams of racers, stunt experts and rally enthusiasts.

Chairman of Elizade group who hosted all the racers on the eve of the rally, at his Ilara Mokin country home; said he was delighted to have the Ondo Rally share spotlight with his signature Wuraola Memorial Tournament, since it had same vision of showcasing the beauty and possibilities of the state to the world at large.

“THE COMBATANT” THE MADE IN NIGERIA HOT ROD CAR
Mr Alex Ephraims was also present with his Made-In-Nigeria car which created a lot of buzz. It comes with a V6 engine that has a maximum speed of 120 mph. That’s pretty fast. It also gets an air conditioning system, in-dash display screen, USB port, automatic transmission, Batmobile looks, LED headlights, leather seats etc. The car is so cool the Governor of Ondo State had to take a ride in it.

The 2 day event ended with a gala night party at the Smoking Hill Golf Course Resort which was turned into an opera house with the immaculate voice of Blessing Agu the Suprano Singer.

In conclusion, motorsports has come to stay in Nigeria and this is further evidenced by the unparalleled interest of the future generation as Baby Gabrielle Osakwe and Alain Sandouk took over the wheels and never wanted to step out of the Tiger Race Car in the pictures below..

There was meant to be a stunt driving session at the Arcade in Akure Town but it was long canceled as only 2 professional stunt drivers were able to make it down to Akure. The other stunt drivers who were coming from Abuja could not continue with the trip when they saw the bad state of the road ahead.

Just like sustaining injuries in a football matches, some cars had their fair share of injury like tyre burst and a totaled engine. But did this have any adverse effect on the event? Absolutely not.

It’s indeed a November to Remember as promised by the Work and Play Team.

One question everyone won’t stop asking is… when and where is the Next Auto Rally?

If you took note of the Mercedes-AMG GT R’s release, you will know the German automaker referred to it as the Beast of the Green Hell � .

The next beast is coming in the form of a two-wheel bicycle that is limited to 50 units while sporting a price tag of 7,109 euros ->$8,289 (approx ₦3 Million ), The Rotwild R.S2 limited edition is a hand-built racing bike that serves as an homage to the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

The price tag , is a reference to AMG GT R’s 7:10.9 Nurburgring lap time.

The frame features “Carbon Module Monocoque Technology,” to help reduce weight. Specially-shaped seats stays help improve the damping comfort on long rides, while the 29-inch Crankbrothers Cobalt 11 carbon wheels give strong acceleration and upgraded braking deceleration.

This bicycle is the third model that has been jointly released by Mercedes-AMG and Rotwild. In 2013, the full-suspension R.X45 AMG carbon fiber mountain bike was introduced, followed by the Rotwild GT S inspired by AMG in 2015, which was a mountain bike for the toughest off-road tracks.

I have played a lot of games ,especially on the android platform .Narrowing the list down to car race games ,there are many to choose from ,but considering some factors very peculiar to Nigerians ,I have chosen one which I think know is the best .

Here are some factors taken into consideration :

Download size : Its just 25-35 MB depending on the version

Storage space :[/b]Its highly compressed so after installing it takes about 150-250mb of your storage space

[b]Extra game data : Unlike other games you really don’t need to download any extra game data ,some games can kill somebody with extra 1 – 2 GB extra game data ,this game is different ,once you download 25MB thats it !.

Graphics : On a scale of 1-10 this game comfortably sits at 7 without shaking .

Ram Usage : Despite its awesome graphics , I tested it on 500 MB and 1 GB RAM phones and there were no lags (lags occurred sometimes when you have internet data on and some other apps open in the background,especially Facebook)

Multiplayer : It has an awesome multi-player feature with daily and weekly contests,despite its small size !

Data Consumption/Usage : I tested the multi-player feature using a 2G network and it worked fine 7 out of 10 times ,the data consumption rate is fairly considerable as well.

Cars : There is a long list of approximately 50 cars to choose from ,my favorites are Lamborghini Sesto Elemento and McLaren P1,their drifting and handling no be here �

If I start talking about this game ehn we will not leave here today ��

I know ,calm down na , I have been wetting your appetite without spilling the name of the app.

The sunroof airbag is designed to prevent vehicle occupants from being flung out through the sunroof in the event of a rollover and this is the first of its kind. 

Obviously, safety is pretty important as the market for sunroofs have always been on the increase and many more car manufacturers are embracing the panoramic sunroof as well. 

Although it looks like the side curtain airbags, Hyundai Mobis confirmed that the sunroof airbag is significantly more difficult to build. It is activated by a yaw sensor in the car which inflates the airbag in less than 0.08 seconds after sensing a rollover. It prevents head and neck injury whilst ensuring occupants are not thrown out of the vehicle. 

The inventor intends to deploy this feature starting from 2019.. and we expect it will first feature in one of these brands: Hyundai, Kia or Genesis being the company's major clients.

We are all praying to grow old.. therefore, we have a moral responsibility to help the aged when trying to cross the highway or get into a bus. 

We youths have to do better in providing support to the elders in the society.

These are some of the reasons why older road users need our assistance on a daily basis;

1. They have got failing sensory and information processing capacities. And as a result this mostly leads to poor judgement

2. They tend to be easily distracted thereby, concentrating on less important issues and neglecting the very important ones

3. They have got poor balance and reduced ability to catch themselves in case of a fall or slip

4. Reduced agility is highly present obviously as a result of old age.

5. They also experience difficulty in walking due to ailment like arthritis, e.t.c . So, they have to be slow while walking

6. They also walk slowly due to to unsure footing and increased chance of falling. So, to maintain balance,they walk slowly

7. Interpreting correctly, road signs and regulations is another major issue cos of technicalities and illiteracy.

8. To be sincere, most infrastructures around aren't built to suit the older road users. So, this puts them at higher risk

Make sure you don't add to their problems. kindly help whenever you see an old road user. They all need our help always.

Daimler is planning to reorganise itself from a single giant company to 3 giant companies. 

One would be for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and vans, another for trucks and buses, and a third for financial services which would provide financing for automotive and commercial vehicle dealers and their retail consumers. 

"Whoever aims for sustainable competitiveness and profitability must continuously evolve and adapt to rapidly changing surroundings – technologically, culturally and also structurally," said CEO Dieter Zetsche. "We are following a straight-forward strategy and have decided to examine a new divisional structure for our company against this backdrop, to make sure we are optimally prepared for the challenges in the new automotive era."

The split will take effect only after an approval has been sought from the executives, directors, and shareholders. We'll the process may take a couple of years.

Porsche Cayenne is the definition of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV). Although, some more expensive models are beginning to surface.. but it still holds its grounds with competitive pricing.

Driving on most Nigerian roads is a real mess especially in Lagos. It seems everything has been strategically designed to frustrate the hell out of human existence. Many road problems can never go unnoticed even if you are not a finicky road user. 

Obviously, there are unlimited problems that can make a driver go insane on Nigerian roads.. Some of them are police officers carrying assault rifles in front of kids like we are in a war zone, traffic jam, potholes, excessive horn honking, exhaust fumes, Keke NAPEPs that have grown wings, the container truck apocalypse, police checkpoints and interlocking block roads that have become badly un-interlocked (like what we have on British International School Way, Lekki - the road that leads to The Palms Mall Lekki) amongst many other issues.

Some drivers even do double parking leaving just one lane for cars on a two-way road while some traders will display their market on the main road and they will still abuse the hell out of any driver whose car comes an inch of their show-glass or tray.

If I am asked to pick just one issue that pushes me beyond limit, it is definitely vehicle emission.. I loathe it like.. Man cannot even drive with windows down and take fresh air again.
