Uber and Taxify are currently the top cab hailing apps in Nigeria. They are extreme rivals, however, their services are rendered to the similar customers using the same cars and drivers in most cases. The service is far better than where we are coming from but we can’t stop there. It is also important to note that these organisations cheat us in one way or the other and I will mention 4 ways that comes to mind.

They take longer routes
This particular issue is so sad. Their navigation systems and some drivers have been programmed to take you through longer routes in order to get the maximum bucks out of every trip. Few weeks ago, I booked Taxify from Ikeja Computer Village to Ijora. Before I knew it, the driver and his navigation entered Awolowo Road to go take 3rd Mainland Bridge through the old toll gate area.

Then I asked the driver to turn and take Ikorodu Road through Maryland which he did. All through the trip, the map kept telling us to make a U-Turn and go through 3rd Mainland even after we got to Anthony on Ikorodu Road, the map kept asking us to re-route. Just Imagine taking 3rd Mainland Bridge from Anthony to Ijora. Too bad! .. If you are thinking there was traffic on Ikorodu Road, no.. there wasn’t.

Just this week again someone who was going from Ijesha express to Ilupeju (10 minutes journey) was taken all the way to Ikorodu Road through Stadium (30 minutes journey).. your transport fare will be more than double.

So it is better you to know the best route to your destination.

Cancellation of trip before pick up
Uber charges N1,000 request cancellation fee and it became even worse after their drivers became disgruntled with them.. so the drivers started taking advantage of that. They will accept your pick up request with prior knowledge of not coming to pick you up. Then they will cancel your request after 5 minutes with an excuse that they can’t come pick you again.

Despite the cancellation being the driver’s fault, Uber will deduct the N1,000 from you card immediately or they’ll add it to your next trip fare. See trouble o!

Rickety cars
Sometimes you’ll be feeling cool that you just requested a cab through your phone expecting a fully air conditioned and stress free ride. Instead, some cars will just arrive with terrible shock absorbers, fuel smell inside the car or AC not working. Has anyone experienced this? Tell us your experience.

Surge pricing
You’ll get adverts on price discounts flooding your phone but when you are actually booking a trip, everything will be on surge. Do the calculation, they give you 20% discount but surge price is 1.3x. Maintaining the status quo is sometimes better.

Why was the pilot trying to take-off on a street with cars? the question still remains unanswered.

This happened in Russia, where it isn’t certain if the pilot tried to take-off on a public road or tried to recover from a failed landing, a car happened to be on the same road and the plane ended up in the rear of the car.

The plane was said to be spraying the fields with anti-locust. Fortunately, the driver of the car and the unsuspecting pedestrian left unscathed, only the pilot, was injured and hospitalised.

This McLaren P1 GTR is currently for sale in Elsloo, Netherlands for a whooping N1.3 Billion ($3.3m), very expensive, you say? wait till you hear that you have to own a regular McLaren P1 to even be able to buy the P1 GTR.

With Global sales of 5,268,079 units in the first half of the year, the Nissan-Renault alliance officially becomes the World’s largest Automaker. Volkswagen and Toyota comes after with 5,155,600 and 5,129,000 units respectively.

Would you be able to control this modified Nissan GT-R…c’mon 2000hp? That is 10 times more power than an average car on the road.

Apparently the driver thought he could handle the raw power, but ended up spinning out of control, it was a good thing he chose an Airport landing strip to show off the full power of his supercar during the ‘Race 1000‘ event in Germany.

The “normal” updated Nissan GT-R prices range from N40.2m ($109,990), packed with 565 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque, from a revised 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine.

The models affected are; 2013-15 C-Max, 2013-15 Escape, 2012-15 Focus, 2015 Mustang , 2014-16 Transit Connect, and 2015 Lincoln MKC. According to Ford, “the rate of reports is higher for vehicles in states with higher ambient temperatures”

The cause of this could be the breakage of the pawl spring tab in the door, the most concern is of this happening when driving, thankfully, there has been only one reported injury from the fault.

Ford intends to fix the cars by replacing the door latches on the affected models, and start a customer satisfaction campaign that allows owners of the affected Ford models to get a one-time free latch replacement.

So if you are buying one, make sure the issue has been resolved.

BRT buses are actually life savers ,there are so many advantages .

It helps reduce pollution ,since it can accommodate about 10 times more people than an average car would .

The cost of tickets does not fluctuate,and its relatively cheaper.

But the problem with the BRT system is that its not being utilized optimally,so its actually causing more traffic than we think.Its increasing the very thing it was built to eradicate -Traffic

Here is what I mean :

Good enough there are many lanes presently ,but we don’t have a matching number of buses for optimal performance to reduce traffic.

Here is a deeper breakdown to explain my point :

Lets take Maryland-Anthony axis all the way to Fadeyi as our case study.

At any given period of 10 minutes the average maximum number of buses on the lane in view is two buses,sometimes no bus at all ! .

While other cars struggle for the other part of the road and staring at a long stretch of empty road they can’t use ,except for some daring drivers .

So, the Lagos state government is actually putting the cart before the horse .

There should be more buses first before more lanes are built .

Oh! if you are currently in Lagos,I need not tell you about the heavy traffic the on going constructions are causing.

One BRT bus with only passengers who are sitting down would accommodate almost three times what a regular Danfo would accommodate.And it would be about 7 times more people than the capacity of a Danfo if we have standing passengers included.

Hence we have a congested major road,with empty BRT lanes,for breeze to pass through,and to serve as a tourist attraction .

In my opinion, the only good and true benefit of these dedicated lanes currently is the easy pass it gives emergency services ,which is awesome !.

But when it comes to traffic reduction,the lanes are doing more harm than good,until more buses are put on those lanes.

Although the exact amount that is being invested hasn’t been disclosed, Volocopter announced that its part of a $29.4 million deal with other firms including Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz.

Volocopter is a company that looks to start producing Flying Taxis that uses a similar initiative to Uber. Volocopter is definitely not the only one to start flying vehicles, other similar companies include; Airbus, Lilium Jet, eVolo, Terrafugia and Joby Aviation, all of which could become direct competitors in the market.

Daimler is also said to own a seat in Uber’s rival, Hailo, after it bought a part of it mid last year.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said at the global launch of the Model 3 in Fremont, California, that the new Tesla model 3 will go over 1,000,000 miles before you have to service its powertrain. So no need for engine, transmission and axle service like we’ve been used to. Splendid!

Although, you will still have to change other consumables more often e.g the tyres, brakes etc.. He said “the next generation powertrains are designed to be a million miles between services.” he seems to be very confident about the powertrains, electric motors and cells implemented in the Tesla Model 3.

1. 1954 W196 – $29.6 Million (N10billion)

The W196 was one of the most successful racing cars of its time. It competed in the 1954 and 1955 Formula One seasons, winning nine of twelve races and two World Championships. The engine featured technology that was based on the Messerschmitt 109 plane of World War Two.

In 2013, Bonhams sold one of these vehicles for nearly $30 million, which is the second largest sum for a car at auction in history.

2. 1936 and 1937 540 K Spezial – $12 Million (N4.4billion) and $10 Million (N3.7billion)

Much like the 500K that we saw earlier in this article, the 540K is a popular auction piece these days due to it being an impressive feat of engineering, a car that was sought after at the time, with a classic look and what remains a comfortable ride (only a selling point for people who actually drive them). These were produced between 1936 and 1944. It was a very similar model to the 500K but had an upgraded engine which produced a bit more speed, and was somewhat roomier.

There was a limousine version, a coupe version (4 seats) and a two seat cabriolet variant. While these cars are, as I noted, popular at auction houses, and several have sold for decent sums of money over the last couple of decades, the highest two were both in California, in 2011 and 2012. The 1936 which was sold in 2012 is the 12th highest price paid for a car at auction.

3. 2011 SLR MacLaren Red Gold Dream – $10 Million (N3.7billion)

And you thought rappers tossed money at silly, golden nonsense! Meet Swiss entrepreneur Ueli Anliker, who bought a 2011 SLR and threw paint and gold at it to make it something as beautiful as it is ridiculous. The paint contains gold dust, and the headlights and wheels are both coated in gold.

The internal knobs and instruments are all jeweled or involve gold and rubies. All told, the car took 35 people 30,000 man hours to complete. The engine received some upgrades and tuning, and the car had a top speed of about 210 MPH back in 2011 when Anliker was trying to sell it. It is unclear whether he sold the car, but he was asking for $10 million Swiss Francs, which would have been roughly $10 million USD.

4. 1928 680 S Torpedo Roadster – $8.25 Million (N3billion)

Designed partially by Mercedes-Benz with extensive work done by French auto-body manufacturer Saoutchik, in 1928, the Torpedo is a beautiful looking car. Adding to the impressive allure of this model, only twelve bodies for the vehicle were actually produced by Saoutchik.

In short, this is an obscenely rare car. In 2013, it was sold by Canada-based RM Auctions in California for $8.25 million dollars.

5. 1929 38/250 SSK – $7.4 Million (N2.7billion)

This car is a slightly different variant on our number eight and was sold by British auction house Bonhams, over 10 years ago, back in 2004. As I previously noted, the car was an engineering phenomenon at the time, and was very successful in racing at the time, so we can understand why it was so unique. With so few left over, it is no wonder that these cars sell for so much at auction, and will likely continue to do so.

6. 1955 300SL – $4.6 Million (N1.7billion)

The 300 SL was originally a race car, just like a few other cars on this list. Production of that variant took place between 1952 and 1953, while the production models were made between 1953 and 1962. Only a couple of thousand were made, and there are obviously very few left. This masterpiece features gull-wings (on the coupe model, not the roadster, obviously) and was said to be the fastest car in the world when it was in production.

7. 1935 500K – $3.7 Million (N1.37billion)

Built between the years 1934 and 1936, the 500K was recognized as being a luxury and performance model for its time. It was considered among the most comfortable rides of the period, and only a few hundred were made. Due to its luxury and its rarity, back in 2011, one of these old beasts sold for about $3.7 million in Monterey, California.
