Car TalkRe: Water Disappearing In Radiator Of Camry 2007 With Oil Found In Radiator by autologic:
Find out why the headgasket got broken in the first instance cos headgasket will not got broken unless there is a hidden fault and it until fault is discovered and removed you can go ahead to perform a successful engine rebuild or else it still back to square one .
Also the extent of warpage to the cylinder due to the overheating need to be ascertained so that proper corrective action will need to be taken in course of engine rebuild work .
Car TalkRe: Why Air Conditioner Stop Chilling When You Refilled It in Nigeria? by autologic: 2:39pm On Nov 24, 2019
fineboynl:
what I means is air condition that use to freezes stop freezing when you refiled them done here. example is your air conditioner short of gas and you refill it in Nigeria it will not be so chilling as it use to before you short of gas. I have experience this with numerous cars and home ac.
There is a standard procedure for refilling of AC and if not followed strictly to the core ,AC won't chilled as expected .

fineboynl:
why air conditioner stop chilling when you refilled it in Nigeria? is it that the Nigeria gas is inferior?
It more about the skill level of so called AC technician than the gas .
How many so called -AC technician knows about refilling AC with correct quantity of refrigerant and oil that manufacturers recommend cos most AC guys will refill till they are satisfied that the car is car is cooling well and the obvious fact is that if u refill beyond normal quantity u will introduce liquid refrigerant into the compressor suction side and sludge the compressor and that will spell doom on the AC system .
how many AC technician knows the standard troubleshooting of AC using manifold guage to read the high and low side and diagnosis correctly
How many of then know about correct procedure for evacuation and vacuuming of AC before refilling talkless of owing the machine.
How many AC technician knows about theory of gas pressure temperature relationship and saturation temperature and the application of this quantities in their daily AC work .
So many ignorance on part of the technician that is killing the compressors and pushing the blame on the gas .
How many AC technician knows about the signaling and module to sensor relationship of modern AC system architecture but will convert anything they see to the ancient manual system they understand if they see any modern design they are not familiar with .
All these are minimum criteria to be satisfied before someone can be patronised to fix AC
Or else frustration will be the result .
Car TalkRe: Resolved by autologic: 8:06am On Nov 24, 2019
Good to hear that the issue is now resolved .
You can see how money would have been wasted and so much confusion would have set in going by way of giving codes literal interpretation as most peeps practice is .
What happens in background is more than what your codes can see .
Most times Car need to be subjected to further test to and analysed to actually see what is happening not just to hunt for codes and make decision just like that .
Car TalkRe: Thread For Automotive Technician With Advanced Or No Scope Diagnosis Skill by autologic:
Agbabiakara:
Great comments from everybody. Some of the reasons why I embraced scope diagnosis are the following:
1. Catching intermittent problem that are hard to trace
2. Minimal disassembly of engine to get valve timing, ignition timing and other engine performance related issues.
3. Checking the integrity of network communication lines and serial decoding of communication data.
4. The master of all which is in-cylinder pressure waveform analysis. With this, the state of health of engine can be determined.
5. Checking fuel pressures, transmission line pressure and other pressures you are interested in.
6. Cooling system check.
7. ABS system that is equipped with MRE or Hall effects sensors.

The list goes on and on..
Have u ever witness the dreaded timing advance and retardd codes or cam/crank correlation issue , knowledgeable tech with good scope will slice such seemly complex issue like piece of cake .

Boss I want you to be my mentor, I'm a student, I also repair cars as well, and I love to face challenging problems, especially with CANBUS systems.
You are welcome anytime but I will advice you work very hard on your basic electrical design knowledge and skill ,cos that is the gateway to CAN communication system knowledge .
I teach my students to be analysts and designers and not mere technician and as a analysts ,the sky is your limit ,and can take on any brand .

Nice so you didn't become an apprentice or anything.
No ,it about training , training and training .

If I may ask, what was your field before you ventured into automotive diagnosis. Or did you learn it all by yourself.
My background is Electrical/ Electronics engineering with more than a decade experience working as IT infrastructure/unix engineer in various multinational before venturing into automobile .
And getting into automobile ,I can still see it still the same science and engineering analysis .
CAN Communication protocol and computer network still share lot of similarities .
No biggie ,it all about training , training , training and challenging the status quo

Yeah but how many luxury cars are in Nigeria? No be piece of shit corollas and Camry full ground for here. What do you wanna fix with an oscilloscope on a corolla.
Likei It depend on how far u want to go in the industry ,I deal mostly with the so called few luxury brand like benz , Audi ,VAG etc ,they challenge my knowledge and pay for my time and will hopefully take on the EV like Tesla and the likes very soon . Corolla is not my thing cos I am bore with the blandness
If want to remain a corolla technician ,this thread is not for you

How many professionals in Nigeria use an oscilloscope. Besides a multimeter and a normal scan tool will suffice for 90 percent of car troubles. With an oscilloscope you are going very far.
I respectfully disagree with the bolded cos my labscope is one of my best investment which I cannot do without and is one of the best thing that has ever happen to automotive world .
Imagine having equipment with same power of the vehicle designer and manufacturer ,it all about your perspective on how far you want to see and get to in the industry.

Depending on kind of issue you take on and brand of car , normal meter will never suffice if you deal with luxury brand and complex issues communication issues .

Thanks a lot for Ur advice, it's been fully restored (fixed) I even had to drive it from Anambra to Abuja and back to Anambra for proper testing(test running)
Thanks for the feedback.it is good to hear that your car is fine now
Car TalkRe: Thread For Automotive Technician With Advanced Or No Scope Diagnosis Skill by autologic:
The power of scope diagnosis is simply out of this world .With a single captured clean waveform taken within few minute ,so much rich information can be gotten with 100% accuracy of the condition of the engine .(compression , timing, valve, battery, kick starter etc ) even before the symptoms started to manifest itself ,all with just a single clean waveform without removing even a pin from the tested vehicle.

Bad advice
Car TalkRe: Thread For Automotive Technician With Advanced Or No Scope Diagnosis Skill by autologic:
Unfortunately ,this is a thread not for DIY or car enthusiasts but for high level tech head cos of the skill level involved ( Mathematics and strong electrical science) and very expensive equipment ,hence might not receive the much needed participation it requires cos it is complex subject , however this is a thread for the future tech that is willing to break new ground and open new frontiers

Thank you very much sir

The car jack on Motion and same sometime loud sound from the exhaust
DTC codes are not to be interpreted literally ,it goes beyond that ,rather look for a recommended tech to sort you out
Car TalkRe: Resolved by autologic:
This is not about scanner ,can't still find it hard to believe that people at this 21st century still believe that it is the scanner that interpret the issue .Scanner are mere data retrieval and the retrieved data are useless until it is subjected to analysis by knowledgeable mind .The skillset and knowledge of the tech using the scanner is what really matter .
This is a big knowledge gap that need to be addressed .

Do not start learning to fix cars with the Japanese cars. They are damn too easy.
You can start with whatever is at your disposal ,all car share the same architect ,and same principle ,the same Knowledge being acquired to fix Japan can be used to fix German ,it all about practice and constantly seeking for knowledge

Hi there,

I have a family member who drives Volkswagen Passat V6 (Automatic) but the mechanics working on it seem to have no idea about what they're doing. The car started with kick-starter problem, probably due to use in muddy areas of Owerri. But the other problem is overheating. The mechanic believes it's a problem with the gear bla bla bla. All said, the car owner wants it towed from Owerri to Lagos, where there's a company/specialist ready to fix it. She actually knows the CEO.

Does anyone know a reliable company that offer car-towing service? From Owerri to Lekki, Lagos.

Thanks, fam.

If you're driving Mercedes Benz E63 AMG at a speed of 120km per hour and I am driving a Toyota Corolla 1.4 at same speed of 120km per hour and we are both driving the same direction,

Is 120km on AMG the same as Toyota Corolla or is faster?
A stone travelling Tru the air at the speed of 100km/he and a feather too travelling at the same speed which one will arrive earlier ?
Answer -both will arrive at same destination the same time .
Reason :They are travelling at same speed though one has the potential to travel faster but at this instance ,speed is the same regardless of any potential .

radautoworks:
2010 Sunday legacy came in with a LONG history of repair. Single owner, purchased brand new.

And I paraphrase...

"Slow idling, the car jerks almost stalling. Great performance had deteriorated. Replaced fuel pump and when it did not improve the filter too. Car got better for a very short while and performance relapsed to what it was. New mechanic made it worse....had a tapping sound from the left side valves. During the process of gaining access to the troubles valves, the left side exhaust sprocket got damaged, had to bring for replacement before the job could be completed. tapping noise disappeared but repeated scan revealed advance timing issues and yet the car had no compression to move not to talk about accelerating. Had a to call another technician that said he has Subaru experience. He pointed out catalytic converter issue and got it done locally. The car can now accelerate but it still drags and jerk at low speed especially when the AC is on. It reduces when the AC is switched off.
Now I have some of my cluster lights on including check engine light and low oil for a car that was supposedly serviced with oil change last week.

TIMING. From what we've seen, it's the timing that's wrong. We are going to try that tomorrow and see if problem stops.
