"For one, the Clinton's relationship with the Mornarchy in the Middle East is far closer than that of Bush. You lie when you say the price at the pumps keep going up. I bought gas into my wife's car last week for $2.38/gallon, and I just filled my car this morning at $2.03/gallon! Why can't you guys be truthful for once?"

When did this become a personal issue between you and I? Where do you live man? gas at $2.03/ gallon?
Look I live in Denver, Co. There are two refineries within ten miles of my home, and I bought discount gas yesterday at $3.19/ gallon at Kingsoopers stores.
Is this a lie? You need to be more logical when you argue brother, guard your temperament and don't be childish!!!!!!!!!!
Politics / Re: Was Colonialism Good For Africa? by Bankole01(m): 3:35pm On Jun 01, 2007
Ndipe:

@ebeledi, are you implying that prior to colonialism, African tribes were at peace with each other?

With regards to religion, I highly doubt if Christianity was practised by the pre-colonial leaders. The traditional religion which has persisted in todays society is proof that its origin did not occur overnight, but dates back to as far as the pre-colonial age. I know that Christianity is a blessing to me, as well as to the outside world and I stand by it. Read "Things Fall Apart" to get a better grasp on the religion of the villagers, prior to the arrival of the white man. Now, tell me, how a mere idol can serve as an intercessor between God and Man. While being hailed as a classic, the novel, in my opinion has only justified the extent of the backwardness in our culture, that in today's society, would be condemnable. Read about the fate of Ikemefuna, the role of women in the society, etc. Sure, colonialism has its ills, but I'd like to think that its overall benefits overrides its short-comings. Blaming colonialism for the under-development in Africa is tantamount to not accepting blame for your own actions. If we had more than a few visionary leaders aside from Thomas Sankara, Africa would be among the leagues of the super powers, because of our natural resources.

PS: If you feel that colonialism is a deterrent to the development of Africa, hey, refrain from using the inventions of colonialism, and return back to our 'blissful' past.

Inventions are not the purview of any one person or group of people or culture. It is a natural occurence of a thinking person.
Colonialism on the other hand, is a killer of culture, innovations, expressions and sets back than natural selection and advancement of a people. This is what colonialism has done to Africa.

Besides the land grab and disorientation of tribal lands, the convoluted countries created as a result are experiencing strife today because of the ignorance of their colonial creators.

The argument of whether we got advancement as aresult, does not hold water or even air. Nigeria and most other African cultures would have evolved faster to either import or develop an advanced society of our own which would have been better understood. Instead we have techonologies sent to us, of which we lack comprehension.

Egypt was a better advanced nation pre-colonialism than most European countries of the day. Persia had better art and phylosophers than Europe. Bronze was being minted in Benin when the europeans were still living in caves.
Colonialism was a curse on Africa as it was on the Mayans and Incas. It was devastating on our cultures and retarded our natural evolution.

As for religion, the indegenes pre-christianity were very cognisant of a higher being (Olodunmare) in Yoruba. Our deities were mere intercessors to God. They were emissaries sent by God to work for us. Ifa the oracle was and is just the voice of Olodumare, not a god in itself. Christianity and Islam opened the way to slavers and colonialists. they today have more demi-gods than all the deities of the land. It has been used as a tool of strife and oppression and turned to big business.

I-man:

If you bothered to read through this thread, you would have seen where I posted a link dealing with approval ratings-http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htmhttp://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/political_updates/president_bush_job_approval . Good luck in locating the 26% approval rating.Another blatant lie.

That Bush has a 26% approval rating is no lie. I live in America and this is his latest approval rating according to recent polls.

Clinton id not start an unnecessary war. He bombed Afganistan to punish the Taliban and Alqeda for the bombing of American embassy in Kenya and the bombing of American warship in UAE.

Someone said he lied under oath about not having sex with his intern! handling someone does not equate sex. Why was the House concerning itself to infidelity as if it was life threatening. It was witch hunt plain and simple.

Bush may have increased the sieze of the military. His wars on so many front has been very devastating for the military and thay are weaker at this time than any time in history.

His environmental policy was only geared towards big business who have continued to gouge and fleece the public at will, without recourse. Even Republicans are regreting voting for him and this is why they lost massively in the last elections.

That America today is enjoying a robust economy has nothing to do with Bush. It more to do with the racing economy of China and the Axis Tigers than with America as a whole. The acolades here do not go to Bush. The fact is American motor companies are losing market shares to Japan.

The unprescedented rise in gas has a lot to do with Bush because of his close relation to oil companies. The price of oil has actually gone down in the last few days yet price at the pumps keep going up.
It was also reported that the oils companies are delibrately keeping prices up by refining less oil to artificialy inflate prices. This is why the Congress had decided to wade in inti this murky business.

Conclusion, Bush has been bad for America!!!!!!!!!!!!
Foreign Affairs / Re: Is George Bush Destroying What America Stands For? by Bankole01(m): 4:13am On Jun 01, 2007
Corrections. If Bush were a Democrat, he would have been impeached. Bill Clinton didn't break laws nor lied to put the country at war, yet the Republicans (whom I classify as hateful) wanted to impeach him for the mere fact that they couldn't get him out as much as they tried.

"If you call basing his action on faulty intelligence lies, then I guess he is a Liar in your own world!"

Faulty intelligence or orchestrated lies calculated to decieve and wrongly push the nation into a devastating war.

Gas at $3.39/gal is gouging of the public. This only happened under the presidency and watch of Bush. This resulted in massive profit of billions for the oil companies. Even with the congress threatening to pass legislation to curb the excesses of the oil companies, Bush is said to promise a veto if such legislation is passed. If this is not corrupt and one sided, I don't know what is.

The environment under Bush has never faced a worse degradation, for a man who could not even pronounce nuclear, calling it 'nucular'

Under Bush, the military has been so devastated and thinned out that they could not marshal enough forces to be of any threat to Iran. Iran knows these only too well, that is why they are thumbing their noses at the US and the World with their nuclear program.

When Bush turned the military to the World police by sending them on cowboy missions and fighting on several fronts, he made the military weak.

Whether I-man plagiarised or not, the fact remains that he was able to list the inconsistencies of Bush.

Can anybody remember his whole cabinet walking out of a UN general meeting? That was so ridiculous and childish. Quite uncalled for from a US president. This is why his foreign policy has been a disaster. This prompted Colin Powell to quit his rudderless administration.

No American president has been more hated  by the World and his own people. He has an approval rating of a mere 26%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The past administration of Obasanjo was the bane of Nigeria. Notr only did he bully other African nations, he used our money to oppress and belittle other African nations. Obasanjo tried unsuccessfully to hold on to the AU chairman post. This is why nigeria lost respect and face among other African nations.
As for Cameroon, Nigeria should never have ceeded Bakasi to them. Nigeria was made a laughing stock for this one point and lost a lot of respect.

Support Bush if you want. As far as I am concerned, Bush is a boob and a bumbling moroon.
First, he could never have been pressident if the Supreme court appointed by his father had not given him an affirmative vote. He had a stolen mandate.
His foreign policy was non-existent. He maligned a lot of nations and the UN body itself.
He started an unnecessary war in Iraq, telling lies to support to support need for war.
His presidency is the most corrupt in American history, turning the war in Iraq to business, making a lot money for friends. His vice becoming a billioneer from the proceeds of war.
He mortgaged peoples lifes to big business, especially the oil companies. Gas prices in America rose unprecedented to the highest prices in ages.
Gas is now selling an average of $3.39/gal.
Bush's administration has been a disaster for Americans. He was democrat, the hateful Republicans would have impeached him!!!!!!!!!!!!

One cannot juxtapose the two; Yaradua and Awolowo by any standards other than the fact they were teachers and both are(were) politicians.

And with politics, while Awolowo remains an icon in Nigerian history as ELECTED the 1st leader of the West even before our independence, Yaradua on the other hand is merely a product our corrupt Presidential election, dubiously SELECTED by the contriving outgoing President.

In plain English, Yaradua is Obasanjo’s bitch for life…, a favor for a favor

You can't build a good house on flawed foundation. Yar'Adua does not enjoy the mandate of Nigerians. No matter the pomp and pagentry of his inaguration, he remains a fruad imposed on Nigerians. To legitimise his presidency, he needs to conduct a new free and fair elections with a revamped and independent electoral body. Otherwise, he will remain weakened and inconsequential all his official life!!!!!!!!!!

Politics / Nigeria's Flaw (s)elections To Hurt Chances Of Un Seat. by Bankole01(m): 3:15pm On May 31, 2007
Flawed polls may hurt Nigeria's bid for UN seat
From Martins Oloja, Abuja Bureau Chief

NOTWITHSTANDING the successful inauguration of the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration on Tuesday, the international community is yet to put behind it the controversial elections that produced his government.

Several nations, which are unimpressed with the conduct of the April polls, are reportedly reviewing the support for Nigeria for one of Africa's seats in an expanded United Nations (UN) Security Council.

The outcome of the polls, The Guardian gathered, had diminished the country's chances of securing the coveted seat.

In its latest report titled Nigeria: Failed elections, failing state? published yesterday, a global conflict prevention body, the International Crisis Group (ICG) based in Brussels, Belgium, says Nigeria's case for that honour "has now been seriously damaged."

According to the report, "many diplomats believe that if a permanent African Security Council seat had to be decided today, Nigeria would trail South Africa, Egypt and possibly Algeria ".

But in his inaugural speech, President Yar'Adua admitted pitfalls in the country's electoral process, and promised a redress in the electoral process when he declared: "We acknowledge that our elections had some shortcomings. Thankfully, we have well-established legal avenues of redress, and I urge everyone aggrieved to pursue them. I also believe that our experiences represent an opportunity to learn from our mistakes."

The President said he would set up a panel to examine the entire electoral process with a view to ensuring that "we raise the quality and standard of our general elections, and thereby deepen our democracy."

However, the influential group, which former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan once described as "a global voice of conscience and a genuine force for peace," observes that Nigeria's failed election had undermined its status as a democracy.

The bungled election, the report says, has diminished confidence in the democratic process, especially among the electorate who were the biggest losers, and exacerbated existing tensions in the Niger Delta. It may also be re-igniting separatist agitation by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the South-East, due to diminished trust in governing institutions.

On the international scene, ICG pointed out that the elections have weakened Nigeria's position as a broker of peace and a champion of democracy in Africa.

The report further said the transition to a hand-picked successor through a flawed election was more like a dynastic succession, which falls far short of international standards for democratic maturity. It says that with Nigeria's capacity to deal with its many internal conflicts now weakened, the country may be heading to a troubled future unless Yar'Adua acts urgently to pull it back from the brink.

"Nigeria's democracy has derailed", says Carolyn Norris, the group's West Africa Project Director. "Yar'Adua has to understand that no number of overtures will satisfy the opposition and especially the aggrieved civilian public, unless and until his administration engages seriously on the very broad agenda that needs to be faced if Nigeria is to confront its existing and pending crises effectively."

The report notes that engaging with these issues requires a government that enjoys legitimacy in the eyes of its people and can enlist their co-operation, but that Yar'Adua has assumed the Presidency with less legitimacy than any previous elected Nigerian President. He may therefore have less capacity to moderate and resolve Nigeria's violent domestic conflicts.

"Concerted measures are required within the next few weeks to heal the most evident wounds of the elections", ICG's Director of African Programme, Mr. Francois Grignon said.

He added that "immediate steps must be taken to build government legitimacy and avoid any further slide to state failure."

Foremost among those immediate steps, according to the group is for Yar'Adua to work hard and fast in building the legitimacy of his administration. Another priority is to work with the opposition to form an inclusive government of national unity, not by co-opting individuals but rather by accepting only the official nominees of opposition parties. He must also overhaul the discredited leadership of the electoral commission and set up an independent inquiry to identify responsibility for electoral fraud, the report adds.

The ICG also calls on the Senate to launch a judicial inquiry into the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC's) financial management, and initiate a national, all-stakeholder conference towards comprehensive electoral reforms.

Meanwhile, the group has urged the UN, United States (U.S.) and European Union (EU) to give material and technical aid to election tribunals. It equally asked the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to encourage the Yar'Adua administration to move fast towards ensuring electoral justice, inclusiveness and reconciliation.

Comment: As much as we pretend that everything is okay, and that things will work themselves out, we still have a lot of work to do to address the fruad called April elections.
Too many peoples horses were gored that it will be virtually impossible to placate everyone.
Not a suscriber to the agitations of MASSOB, there a tenable arguments to their grievances.
The Niger Delta area had been more marginalised than any other sector.
With the NASS and Senate and country virtually and firmly in PDP hands, the counrty in moving towards communism and fascism.
Can Ya'Adua address all these ills, can he build a solid house on a shakey and fruadulent foundation?
AS much as we don't want any outside interference, lets face it Nigeria or any other nation in the world cannot survive on her own without imput from foreign nations. We are a comity of nations.

What I find very funny in this whole drama is how the Senate President will be chosen.

BigB1 has always talked about having a politically aware electorate being paramount to having a free and fair election. The question is what is the hope of seeing a free and fair election in Nigeria when even our lawmakers do not know their voting rights.

Instead of interested candidates to the post of Senate President or Speaker lobbying their fellow house members they prefer to first lobby the outgoing President or President-elect who practically has no vote.
Tomorrow the same sort of people will criticize Iwu for a Sham election.

What is the essence of democracy and sepration of powers if the legislature is an extention of the Presidency?? party or no party.

Good observation. If our (s)elected Nass members cannot (or allowed) to vote in their own representatives (leaders) what hope do we ordinary have?

The worst part it is that most of the loans given out to our leaders end up back in the foreign banks. Only this time around, under individual names or numbers.

These loans are still charged to the country (Nigeria) when they(Europeans) know full well that the money had been stolen with their duplicity and trust.

This is why loans and aid should not be given unless they know what projects are being implemented and how compliance and progress is monitored.

I hope the senate passes a law that forbids anyone granting AID to Nigeria as Nigeria don't need any such AID. We want fair trade not the current crazy and criminal formulas that promote and protect the Western producers while exploiting and stealing from Nigeria and other African nations.

Nigeria is rich enough not to get any form of AID from these so called nations that end up milking us dry in the name of trying to help.

The average corrupt politician can effortlessly write off the total AID package given to Nigeria by all the donor nations put together so what are we really talking about?

I hope this issue will lead to a critical analysis as regards whether we really need the AID in the first place or not.

True talk Afam, but are our politicians wise or patriotic enough to give up their stolen loot for the nation.

As much I hate to have foreigners dabble in the affairs of Nigeria, ths last April non-elections are a sham and a blemish on the administration. Some of us have not been forthcoming nor bold enough to condemn such brazen act of disenfranchisement of the citizens.
No matter how much we like things to move forward, we can never build a nation on falsity.

The foregners have been very conniving and enabling in corruption in Nigeria. The multi-national oil companies more so than any other corporate. At the same time their governments have been well meaning at times in giving a helping.

I have to support them in not giving any aids until we correct our corrupt ways of doing things.

Obasanjo created this problem for Ribadu by:
1. Using him to prosecute a political agenda and vendetta

2. By promoting him above his peers and seniors, OBJ created enemity for him

As a law enforcement officer, I know what we have to do to get promoted. We have to study like crazy and take exams.
If you pass the test, then you go to an assesment testing in front of officers and civilians (sometimes) where you get grilled for three hours. Then you have an interview with the division chiefs. Only after then do you get promoted and everyone will know you have earned it.
the arbitary promotions he got, created low morale in a force reeling from bad public image.

Ribadu although a good officer, allowed himself to be used in a bad way. He has to go, for his job is done. He is a political officer!!!!!!!!
